Wikipedia Procedure

[edit]

What is the procedure for splitting a page? Is anyone allowed to do it?

Also, is anyone allowed to greet newcomers?

Thanks in advance.

ENIAC 18:34, 5 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  1. To split ("fork") a page, you should bring it up on any relevant Talk pages first with the reasons why you think it should be split. Keep in mind that in an encyclopedia it is generally best to have similar topics that fall under the same subject in the same article, not to have all individual particulars separated out. The most common articles that are forked are of a subject is so vast and an article so long that it warrants it. Usually someone will respond to your proposal. If no on responds and you are tentative about it, you might post it on WP:RFC. If it still seems like an unequivocally good idea after several days, you can do the split yourself.
  2. Anyone is allowed to welcome newcomers. There are templates for this purpose you can find at Wikipedia:Welcome templates, or you can craft your own or make comments based on what an individual user seems to be interested in, etc. The only real restriction would be: don't make advice about something you don't really know about; refer the user to the relevant page if you can find it, or leave it for someone else. It might be best to explore the encyclopedia first rather than welcoming when you yourself are a new user. I have left such a welcome template below, which has useful links, advice, etc. —Centrxtalk • 18:51, 5 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to Wikipedia!

[edit]
Hello ENIAC! Welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. If you decide that you need help, check out Wikipedia:Where to ask a question, ask me on my talk page, or place {{helpme}} on your talk page and someone will show up shortly to answer your questions. Please remember to sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your name and the date. Below are some recommended guidelines to facilitate your involvement. Subpages

[edit]

Sorry to ask for help again.

Am I allowed to create sub pages for my home page and talk page (e.g. "http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/User:ENIAC/Current_projects", "http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/User_talk:ENIAC/Archive1")?

Thanks in advance. ENIAC 19:44, 5 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, this is allowed. See Wikipedia:Subpages. They should be related to Wikipedia though, which these obviously are. —Centrxtalk • 19:48, 5 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much. ENIAC 19:56, 5 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Useful Links for New Wikipedians

These links will not cover everything; do not hesitate to contact me or someone else.

Basics of Wikipedia

With the following links, you can find out the basics of how Wikipedia works.

Personal Pages

Below are pages that are about you. You can use them to communicate with other Wikipedians, and help you with your edits.

Good work on breaking up that hideous introduction, it's much better now. Still needs a lot of expansion, but we need biology people for that :) Cheers, — riana_dzasta wreak havoc|damage report 15:49, 7 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

More Questions!

[edit]

Forgive me, for I ask lots of questions! How does a WikiBot communicate with the Wikipedia servers? Does it load the HTML via HTTP and process it, or does it communicate with another protocol? Thanks in advance! -ENIAC (Talk) (Current Projects) 22:39, 7 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

By the looks of your question, I think it would be best to have you log on to IRC. This way I can get others on #wikipedia-bootcamp to help you in addition to me. This link will direct you to a web based IRC client. This way you don't have to download anything to talk to us! We are waiting for you. —— Eagle (ask me for help) 22:46, 7 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

New Page Patrol

[edit]

Howdy! I'm doing New Page Patrol with you today, and I wanted to remind you to leave messages on the talk pages of the users whose articles you nominate for speedy deletion. You can find a list of appropriate warnings at WP:TT. Also, don't forget to use edit summaries to help your fellow editors doing recent changes patrol. Now that is un-nesscessary.

Be BOLD

[edit]

Hi,

you have good ideas, maybe things would go faster if you just be WP:BOLD! Go for it!

To answer your question, you can just remove tags if needed. If you need help, just ask!

I'm referring to the discussion on Talk:Anabolism.--Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 17:12, 21 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
That kind of thing shouldn't be a long term operation! --Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 17:16, 21 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Now that you've said so, you could wait... But if you have the time now, you can just say you've changed your mind and are BOLDly splitting --Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 18:04, 21 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Free Church of the Divine Spirit

[edit]

Not sure this is worth spending time/effort on. In their own words they are a "very small independent fellowship", probably not notable enough for an article. exolon 12:41, 22 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I agree, as it seems the article has been deleted. -ENIAC (Talk) (Current Projects) 12:48, 22 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your comment on my Talk page. The articles aren't all that great, but at least they add information that is hard to find elsewhere. Hopefully, I will be able to add similar information on the other newly created districts as and when I come across it! Skinsmoke 13:12, 22 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Your image for Template:mtgstub

[edit]

I've listed it for deletion at WP:IFD. I feel that it's against WP's fair use policy to use copyrighted images for things like stub templates, which only serve an administrative purpose. You're welcome to comment. Mangojuicetalk 13:05, 21 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned fair use image (Image:Weblog expert logo1.png)

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Weblog expert logo1.png. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. File:Romance-novel-stub ico.PNG listed for deletion

[edit]

An image or media file that you uploaded or altered, File:Romance-novel-stub ico.PNG, has been listed at Wikipedia:Images and media for deletion. Please see the discussion to see why this is (you may have to search for the title of the image to find its entry), if you are interested in it not being deleted. Thank you. Skier Dude (talk) 06:06, 25 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The file File:Mathapplied-stub ico.png has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Unused, unclear use/purpose

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.

Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and files for discussion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.
