About COI

[edit]

If you have a close connection to some of the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest. In keeping with Wikipedia's neutral point of view policy, edits where there is a conflict of interest, or where such a conflict might reasonably be inferred from the tone of the edit and the proximity of the editor to the subject, are strongly discouraged. If you have a conflict of interest, you should avoid or exercise great caution when:

  1. editing or creating articles related to you, your organization, or its competitors, as well as projects and products they are involved with;
  2. participating in deletion discussions about articles related to your organization or its competitors;
  3. linking to the Wikipedia article or website of your organization in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam); and,
  4. avoid breaching relevant policies and guidelines, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, verifiability of information, and autobiographies.

For information on how to contribute to Wikipedia when you have conflict of interest, please see our frequently asked questions for businesses. For more details about what, exactly, constitutes a conflict of interest, please see our conflict of interest guidelines. Thank you. Chick Bowen 18:53, 23 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This account, Buddy4498, has been blocked indefinitely from editing Wikipedia, because your username does not meet our username policy.
This is often not a reflection on the user, and you are encouraged to choose a new account name which does meet our guidelines and are invited to contribute to Wikipedia under an appropriate username. If you feel this block was made in error, you may quickly and easily appeal it - see below.

Our username policy provides guidance on selecting your username. In brief, usernames should not be offensive, disruptive, promotional, related to a 'real-world' group or organization, or misleading. Also, usernames may not end with the string "bot" unless the account is an approved bot account.

If you have already made edits and wish to keep your existing contributions under a new name you may request a change in username. To do so, please follow these directions:

  1. Add {{unblock-un|your new username here}} below. This is possible because even when you are blocked, you can still edit your own talk page.
  2. At an administrator's discretion, you may be unblocked for 24 hours to file a request.
  3. Please note, you may only request a name that is not already in use. The account is created upon acceptance – do not try to create the new account before making the request for a name change since we can far easier allocate your new name to you, if it is not yet used. Usernames that have already been taken are listed here. For more information, please visit Wikipedia:Changing username.
  4. In the alternative, you can "abandon" the contributions under this username and create a new account, which is much faster and easier.
Last, the automated software systems that prevent vandalism may have been activated, which can cause new account creation to be blocked also. If you have not acted in a deliberately inappropriate manner, please let us know if this happens, and we will deactivate the block as soon as possible. You may also appeal this username block by adding the text {{unblock|your reason here}} below or emailing the administrator who blocked you.

{{unblock-un|EMUBoard}} I would like to change my username to comply with the wikipedia username guidelines.

Your request to be unblocked has been granted for the following reason(s):

Allowing username change to Buddy4498 (talk · contribs). Please put this request in at Wikipedia:Changing username as soon as possible to avoid re-blocking. Merry Christmas!

Request handled by: Daniel Case (talk) 06:45, 25 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm in communication with the blocking administrator. Please bear with us.--chaser - t 21:52, 24 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
As always with this sort of thing, we must ask: Do you intend to continue editing these articles about the U of Oregon with a new name? And are there any other areas you are interested in editing? Daniel Case (talk) 23:13, 24 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I plan on working with college publications throughout the west coast (and probably the rest of the country), and that will most likely involve adding information on student governments, programs, and organizations to wikipedia. I have no intentions of creating a conflict of interest, but because I am new to this process, I have accidentally run into these issues. I am reading more into the wikipedia guidelines to make sure my work is of neutral tone, sourced by credible publications, and that I am encouraging others to help contribute. In retrospect, my username was ill prepared since I did not realize the COI that would be associated with it. I chose it because I wanted to add information on the EMU Board first and then move on to other campus unions (as reported by media and official websites). I am not involved with the work I have been contributing on-- i read into these topics quite a bit and feel inspired to help the online wikipedia project. So, I do intend on adding more to the college publication sites, but because I have started with the University of Oregon, I will only contribute information that has a citation to go with it. If you believe this is a COI, from what I have read, this would not be because I have no personal gain from increasing the credible information on universities, except knowing that I contributed to a worthy cause. Your input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! EMUBoard (talk) 01:14, 25 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Alright. It's Christmas, so I can be forgiving. But I need to know what username you want to use. Daniel Case (talk) 04:36, 25 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I will use Buddy4498. Happy holidays. EMUBoard (talk) 05:30, 25 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Associated Students of the University of Oregon is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Associated Students of the University of Oregon until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion.
