Koç University is a private university in Istanbul, Turkey. It started education in temporary buildings in 1993 and moved to its current campus which is 30 km north of the city centre, near Sarıyer in 2000. Koç University has sixty academic and administrative buildings, including laboratories, library, dormitories, faculty residences, social venues, health center and sports facilities. Koç University currently has 22 undergraduate, 27 graduate and 13 PhD programs. It has over 5,130 students and 400 academicians.
History
[edit]It was founded in 1993 by the Vehbi Koç Foundation, with the aim of creating a world-class university and stimulating modern research. It is the first university in Turkey which bears a person's last name. Koç University has a four year long education system and students are required to complete a comprehensive core liberal arts program and establish specialization in their chosen fields through individually designed elective programs. Cooperation with international institutions, as well as lectures by internationally renowned academicians and business leaders. The University accepts international students from various countries. The language of education is English.
Koç University is supported by the resources of the internationally renowned Vehbi Koç Foundation. In 2009, 22 Carnegie organizations -including the esteemed foreign-policy think tank, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace- collectively awarded the Koç Family the “Carnegie Medal of Philanthropy”. Universally acknowledged as the most prestigious recognition of philanthropic excellence in the world, the Medal is considered equivalent to the Nobel Prize for Philanthropy.
