Historical Rail Insert[edit]

Hey, do we have a definitive way of writing the "Line and station closed" bits etc? I thought we the general concise (I'm sure it was talked about somewhere) was that we were writing them all in italics, with only the 'Line' having a capital letter, and not bothering to put "Line and station open" if that was the case as it seemed unnecessary. Just wondering what you think so we're all working from the same page, cos after it was briefly talked about before I spent literally hours changing dozens of pages to the above format (i.e. the way I had written the Ibrox page as an example). :)

Not really too fussed about what way it done, I'm just so pernickity that I'd like we were both doing the same thing! --Dreamer84 21:24, 2 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The way I have been doing it is as follows:-
Wiki Text As displayed Example
<small>Line and Station open</small> Line and Station open Whitecraigs
<small>Line open; Station closed</small> Line open; Station closed Thurso
<small>Line closed; Station open</small> Line closed; Station open Carmyle
<small>Line and Station closed</small> Line and Station closed Kelvinbridge
Feel free to amend as appropriate. A standard approach is required. The Kilbarchan Loop Line is a classic case of where this approach is not followed. As regards when it should be applied, my preference is that is always applied tothe the Historical Line Inserts. --Stewart 21:38, 2 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I can't really decide whether the 'S' in station should be capitalised, there's no other instances of doing so anywhere else in the articles, I prefer a lower case 's', I think anyway. I'm willing that start using "Line and station open" though. How about a compromise, I'll start using "Line and station open" if you drop to a lower case 's'? So...
Wiki Text As displayed Example
<small>Line and station open</small> Line and station open Whitecraigs
<small>Line open; station closed</small> Line open; station closed Thurso
<small>Line closed; station open</small> Line closed; station open Carmyle
<small>Line and station closed</small> Line and station closed Kelvinbridge
But italics or no italics?
I'm sure of all the things to discuss on Wikipedia this comes in at the bottom somewhere! Not sure I see what's wrong with the Kilbarchan Loop Line stations though, although most still have the old 'yellow' colour. Those pages are in need of infoboxes and better referencing though, will see if I can get that done soon. --Dreamer84 21:51, 2 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I am happy with the lower case "S". As regards italics, I have no preference. Let us go with....
Wiki Text As displayed Example
<small>''Line and station open''</small> Line and station open Whitecraigs
<small>''Line open; station closed''</small> Line open; station closed Thurso
<small>''Line closed; station open''</small> Line closed; station open Carmyle
<small>''Line and station closed''</small> Line and station closed Kelvinbridge
There a few exceptions, i.e. the L&DR out of Exhibition Centre, and around Bowling where sections of line are still open between stations. These willhave to be considered on a case by case basis. Now how do we spread this? --Stewart 22:03, 2 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ardrossan Railway[edit]

Hey, like the improvements to the Ardrossan Railway route map, couldn't figure out a good way of portraying the Doura branch but it seems so obvious now! What made you put in the two L&AR Ardrossan stations though? --Dreamer84 23:27, 15 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The reason for the two L&AR Ardrossan stations was to put the stations around the harbour into context. This also follows what I did for the L&AR around Lugton (incidenatally the connection between the L&AR and the Glasgow Central Railway does not look right) and recently for the Arbroath and Forfar Railway andAberdeen Railway where they met around Guthrie. --Stewart 07:10, 16 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Scottish Historical Railways[edit]

I have now restarted my work through the Scottish Historical Railways. I will undertaking a review of my previous work, hence the reworking of the Aberdeen Railway and Ardrossan Railway route maps. --Stewart 07:10, 16 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ardrossan North Railway Station[edit]

I was wondering if the historical rail insert might be needing updated. According to the Stansfield book there was a link between the site of Ardrossan North and Winton Pier. Indeed, long after the Caledonian line was lifted, there was still a spur line that came from the active end of the harbour and reached up to the bridge near Ardrossan North, I think it was a spur line and a series of sidings that were being used for the Shell facility. Douglasnicol 20:45, 16 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure if you have the Stansfield book, but here's what it says...
"This section of the line was opened in 1890 and was constructed in order to give the Caledonian Railway Company access to Ardrossan's Winton Pier station prior to the construction of the Caledonians own station at Montgomerie Pier. The line continued in use for passengers until the withdrawal of services to Montgomerie Pier in 1968. Like many other stretches of line during the First World War, services from the pier were suspended from 1 January 1917 until 1 February 1919".
As I say, the line also continued in use as a spur from the G&SWR end to the Shell depot until electrification when that part of the line was lifted. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Douglasnicol (talkcontribs) 21:45, 16 July, 2007 (UTC).

Ardrossan North[edit]

The only trouble with the Saltcoats North, Ardrossan North, and Stevenston Moorpark side of it is that the Stansfield book does say that the stations were reopened after 1932. It however doesn't state when they closed again. I think the Montgomerie Pier station was retained for secondary boat traffic post WWII, probably Ireland and Isle of Man. I'd be interested in the other errors in that book though. :) By the way, do you also have the "Ayrshires Last Days of Steam" book, its not bad either. Douglasnicol 22:54, 17 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ardrossan North[edit]

It's possible that the Stansfield book was correct in a way about the Caledonian Evening Breathers service. It could be referring to the 'Caledonian Steam Packet Company'

From the Calmac wiki page "After years of fierce competition between all the fleets, the Caledonian and G & SW were merged in 1923 into the LMS and their fleets amalgamated into the Caledonian Steam Packet Co."

The Stansfield pic of Ardrossan North with the English Electric Type 1 also doesn't look promising with the condition of the station and none of the pictures of it in the Old Ardrossan book are exactly helpful. I too have a pile of the Stenlakes covering a fair few of the towns.

Halò, Ciamar a tha thu?... Now.., so far the info submitted has been a generalization from trusted internet sources. These have included excerpts from published books and documents and from other people "published on the web".The increasing years and publishers and limited documentation have created difficulties to clearly see the non personalised viewpoints of the facts of Dalry's history. I respect the "wiki" need for references yet as you may understand, sometimes conflicting or partial information must be accumulated and after sincere dissection several "bones" become apparent. I understand the "flesh" on these bones can be infected or corrupted, but personal viewpoints they are, that's what happens when people record information for the public. So with this in mind, I will include the points of my reference from my investigations in any future submissions.

Giffen castle[edit]

Hello Dreamer. Thanks. I was hoping that you would check it over. Have I got the co-ordinates right? Have a look at Cleeves_Cove_cave for interest.Rosser 19:05, 3 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ardrossan[edit]

We used part of the line to Montgomerie Pier as a nature reserve, the section in the cutting beside Ardrossan Academy. We got Sir William (?) McAlpine down to open it for us, seeing as his grandfather (?) built it. Sustrans still own it. Rosser 19:09, 3 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Was having difficulty getting Barrhead Central in especially with the link to Nitshill. Have now added what I think is the correct arrangement on lines in Barrhead. Thoughts? Also have a look at, and expand the main article. Regards.... --Stewart 17:04, 4 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Definately a complicated one, sorry for butting in during your edits. Well done on a difficult area. The only problem I can see is that according to OS maps the Nitshill link from Barrhead Central joined the main GBKJR before the Paisley and Barrhead District flyover, i.e. it didn't pass under it. Infact the connection was made almost right next to where the Barrhead Branch passed under the GBKJR. I've noticed that RAILScot has the connection passing under the P&B District before joining the main line.
No idea how to show that in the diagram though, there isn't enough room! --Dreamer84 17:14, 4 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Had another go at the lines around Barrhead. --Stewart 17:55, 4 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi[edit]

I was wondering if you were interested in the Secret Scotland Wiki, this project seems to be intent on tracing and giving info on structures and other things in Scotland that have little or no traces in the modern day. While the majority of it is military bases there are railway lines and similiar things, it's an intriguing project that covers a wide range of things. If you're interested, visit here

http://www.secretscotland.org.uk/index.php/Secrets/SecretWiki

Using the map plotter on each entry might also be good for railway projects as there are many such things that aren't too obvious today.

Infobox UK disused station[edit]

I've just found this template, which I would like to use for various Lynton & Barnstaple stations. (see example at Lynton and Lynmouth railway station

Is it possible to add a parameter to indicate post-1923 ownership? Also, could it be possible to add the line's crest as well as a photo of the station?

All in all, a great template. Many thanks, Lynbarn 22:52, 5 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Been working on the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway this evening, mainly the construction of a route map temaplate at Template:Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway. Can you have a look and review. Many thanks Stewart 22:41, 9 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Just so you know: it's possible to move a page over a redirect as long as it only has one edit on it. You probably could have moved the page yourself. The Evil Spartan 23:48, 12 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Montgomery Park[edit]

Hi there, that is actually not a bad idea, I will merge the article into Girdle Toll, is it possible for me to delete the original page myself? EwanMclean2005 19:12, 13 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

To Do's[edit]

I've not been quite as active recently on Wiki as I'd like, but I was thinking that there doesn't seem to be quite as much focus on the transport side as there used to be. What about creating a list of 'to do's' for articles that need created and expanded. For example, some of the railway station entries are fine but if possible could do with a bit more history. Douglasnicol 20:17, 19 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Secret Scotland[edit]

No problem on the Barnstar, you've made a lot of contributions to the railways project.

The Secret Scotland Wiki is fascinating, especially when you get such stuff as the abandoned Ravenspark Hospital, or the Gailes Radar sites that were originally RAF Fullarton and RAF Gailes. Fortunately my memory was able to recall the Gailes site being used by Prestwick Airport until Atlantic House opened. Douglasnicol 20:25, 19 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

thanks, i missed that. Simply south 21:57, 19 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ardrossan Railway Map[edit]

Excellent idea Stewart, very useful (although the Ardrossan Town to Largs Branch connection no longer exists, didn't want to change it incase you were still working on the template).

Great job on all the templates you've been doing over the last couple of weeks, especially some of the more 'hairy' ones. --Dreamer84 23:23, 21 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Fixed --Stewart 23:33, 21 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Oops - sorry, not quite sure what happened there. I was not paying attention when I revised the references and updated your page. It might be better to redirect my sandbox to yours or vice versa. --Stewart 19:16, 22 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fairlie Low[edit]

This is an iffy one. I avoided making this page on purpose because I have my doubts this ever actually existed. The only reference is a vague mention on RAILScot to some source that I'm not actually of what it is. I don't really think there's enough information to make an article, and there's nothing to verify the station even existed.

I reckon the mention in whatever book RAILScot is refering to was actually an alternate name for the Pier station. --Dreamer84 21:50, 22 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Another look at Jowett refers to a Goods Station called Fairlie Harbour --Stewart 21:56, 22 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
That sounds like it could again be the Pier station as there has never been an alternate pier. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Douglasnicol (talkcontribs) 22:22, August 22, 2007 (UTC).

Re:Largs Branch[edit]

This line on the Largs Branch entry is wrong I think.

"On 30 September 1969 the short line between Castlehill and Parkhouse Junctions in Ardrossan was closed, meaning that direct travel between Largs and Ardrossan Harbour was no longer possible"

I remember that prior to electrification the lines from Ardrossan Harbour, South Beach and out to Largs still formed a 'triangular' pattern. The line from Ardrossan Town/Harbour to the Largs branch was removed after electrification. However, the Stansfield book does mention a short half mile connection between this area and the former Caledonian line to Montgomerie Pier, could this be the actual part that was closed. Technically up until electrification it was still possible for a train to travel direct to/from Largs to/from Ardrossan Harbour. Personally the electrification seems to have done as much harm as good considering how much more of the network was cut to pieces. Douglasnicol 22:20, 22 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Potterhill[edit]

Thanks for sorting out my Potterhill station mess. It was my first wiki edit as you may have guessed. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Eric144 (talkcontribs) 17:54, August 26, 2007 (UTC)

I removed the 1955 photograph. I remember scanning it myself.

An anonymous editor is stating that this station was closed due to a train crash. I cannot find any reference to a crash here. I have put a query on the talk page, can you help? --Stewart (talk) 21:45, 28 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Largs Branch pictures[edit]

Great work - at least the weather was kind for you yesterday when you the pictures at Fairlie. Today at Hunterston the weather was diabolical and would not have been conducive to good photos. --Stewart (talk) 19:45, 31 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, think I got lucky as it seemed like it would rain any moment! Was disappointed when I went to get a photo of the site of Fairlie Pier, all I got was a generic shot of some grass and bushes. Something quite interesting at Fairlie station though was this sign, looking modern, yet showing the old "Fairlie High" name. --Dreamer84 19:54, 31 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Have found some pictures I took at Largs and Fairlie in April 1984 (just after I bought my first SLR. Currently scanning the negatives. The Fairlie High sign goes back to when the Hunterston A&B flasks were shipped from the station. --Stewart (talk) 21:08, 31 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Could you please check this new page out out for me.

Pyrotec and myself have been working on this article this evening. I have produced the route diagram. Any comments? --Stewart (talk) 22:30, 3 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Looks good, I've added a short lead paragraph just to introduce the article before going into the full flow of things. --Dreamer84 22:42, 3 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Station pictures[edit]

It's a shame we couldn't get hold of more pictures of some of the railway stations as they used to be, Fairlie has the 1980's one. I've got a particularly nice shot of Ardrossan Town in steam days as if taken from Castle Hill, but it came off another website which I can't remember. Several of the station articles are illustrated nicely like Gatehead, but some old pictures would be useful if we could get them, and the permission to use them. return character PBDR[edit]

Awesomely trivial comment coming up - you are right that one return is normal but that section is the only one that doesn't have a gap between itself and the next as you can see. It looks wrong to me.

Archiving[edit]

Hi, My user discussion page is starting to get a little full up and I was wondering how you do the archive function. By the way, although we can't use it on Wiki, would you like that pic of Ardrossan Town? Douglasnicol 20:06, 6 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
