Control copyright icon Hello DrBMChase! Your additions to Rock hyrax middens have been removed in whole or in part, as they appear to have added copyrighted content without evidence that the source material is in the public domain or has been released by its owner or legal agent under a suitably free and compatible copyright license. (To request such a release, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission.) While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from sources to avoid copyright and plagiarism issues.

  • You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and cite the source using an inline citation. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
  • Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify the information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
  • We have strict guidelines on the usage of copyrighted images. Fair use images must meet all ten of the non-free content criteria in order to be used in articles, or they will be deleted. To be used on Wikipedia, all other images must be made available under a free and open copyright license that allows commercial and derivative reuse.
  • If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a legally designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. Understand, though, that unlike many other sites, where a person can license their content for use there and retain non-free ownership, that is not possible at Wikipedia. Rather, the release of content must be irrevocable, to the world, into either the public domain (PD) or under a suitably free and compatible copyright license. Please see Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
  • Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you must follow the copyright attribution steps described at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. See also Help:Translation#License requirements.

It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, please ask them here on this page, or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you. — Diannaa (talk) 01:59, 16 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Diannaa,
I understand your concerns, of course, but I, Brian M. Chase, created the original content (including images) and have, according to Elsevier, where much of this content has been published, the right to the "Reuse of portions or extracts from the article in other works", as I have done in this wiki page. All material is from the preprint version of the article, or is original to this page.
According to Elsevier, I may:
"Re-use their own material in new works without permission or payment (with full acknowledgement of the original article):
1. Extend an article to book length 2. Include an article in a subsequent compilation of their own work 3. Re-use portions, excerpts, and their own figures or tables in other works."
https://beta.elsevier.com/about/policies-and-standards/copyright
To address each point:
-The entirety of the submission is "in my own words and structure". I am the author of the original text.
-The material is assiduously referenced, to give proper credit where it is due.
-All the images are mine.
-I understand that once on Wikipedia the information will be in the public domain.
- The text is, as mentioned above, both my own and properly attributed.
I hope this responds to your concerns, but please do let me know if further clarity is required, or further hurdles need to be surmounted.
Bets regards,
Brian M. Chase

Hello. An explanation on your talk page is not sufficient to satisfy our procedures for accepting this content for publication (both the text and the images). We need to have documentation that shows the copyright holders have given permission for the material to be copied to this website. Wikipedia has procedures in place for this purpose.
For the prose, please see WP:Donating copyrighted materials for an explanation of how to do it. There's a sample permission email at WP:Consent. For the images, please provide evidence of permission by either providing a link to a site with an explicit release under a free license or by sending a declaration of consent to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org. There's full instructions at Commons:Volunteer Response Team. 16:58, 16 September 2023 (UTC) — Diannaa (talk) — Diannaa (talk) 16:58, 16 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Diannaa for direction in this regard. I have sent detail and declaration to permissions-commons@wikimedia. DrBMChase (talk) 07:28, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion is not an alternative to expansion

[edit]

It is not acceptable to delete sourced information while waiting for permissions to clear the insertion of text you created. Please also note that, once that text is added, it is subject to being edited by other Wikipedia editors and will not remain stable at your preferred version. —C.Fred (talk) 12:07, 19 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @C.Fred This is all moot now, as VRT has confirmed that I am the owner of what I originally posted, and that the page can now be returned to it original form. As I have stated, my intention was to remove the information that I had created that had been rendered misleading by the haphazard removal of 80% of the page. It is, of course, the nature of Wikipedia that content will evolve, but one would hope that it was done in a way that edified, rather than mislead, those who refer to it.
