Help me create an article about myself!

Hello, I've been using Wikipedia for years now, and I've just opened a Wikipedia account because I'd like to contribute a new article about myself. I am a musician by profession, and would like to contribute factual information about myself, but there are some serious problems involved. First, I don't know if I must have my biographical information verified by Wikipedia, and some things might be very difficult to prove, so I'm not sure if I should include them, at least right away. I do happen to have some biographical materials and credentials on hand, but, as I have just stated, even after having extensively read Wikipedia guidelines, I'm not sure how I should proceed so as to create an objective and credible account of my life and current professional situation. I would you suggest you read over WP:YOURSELF first. We have a strong policy about writing about yourself, and it is really frowned on to be honest. Do you really meet WP:MUSIC? Can you give neutral reliable sources to validate this? Can this article be written from a completely neutral point of view? If you have these sources, and think that you can write the article neutrally, I'd recommend that you first create a draft first and allow it to be reviewed. Help me create a Wikipedia article about myself!

Hi, RickinBaltimore, I've read through WP:YOURSELF and I CAN provide verifiable sources for my biography, and I also meet several of the criteria listed in WP:MUSIC; however, as concerns the postulate that one should not have a Wikipedia article created for promotional purposes, I, as an up-and-coming musician, am left feeling a little unsure whether I should create one, or have one written for me at this point, as I already have a website with a Bio page, as well as several videos of mine on Youtube. To be honest, the main reason I would like to have a Wikipedia article is to lend credibility to myself from the point of view of anyone who might like to find out information about me- for starters, I assume that someone who HAS a Wikipedia article is much more likely to be taken seriously than someone who doesn't, but I don't know if I should wait until I become significantly more famous (which I hope and expect to be!) until I finally request for one to be created. I, in fact, AM able to write an objective, neutral article about myself, as there are several references about me in the press and on the Internet, and can cite them (the article at this point might end up looking kind of like a stub); but at this stage, after having read the article you suggested, I'm not sure if I should do it myself, or if this is the right time to have one created, all the more so since Wikipedia warns that the articles "will be edited mercilessly" by less-than-benevolent contributors, and my biography and Youtube videos have certainly sparked enough controversy so as to warrant at least a little concern. I'd appreciate it if you could advise me further on this issue, as there is little doubt in my mind that sooner or later, an article about me will pop up on Wikipedia- but I'd just like to be on the safe side for now.

If someone who has a Wikipedia article is taken more seriously, that is only because Wikipedia is selective about subjects and discourages autobiography and self-promotion. If anyone could write an article about themselves, a Wikipedia article would carry no more prestige than a Facebook page.
"Up-and-coming" is a phrase we often hear (see WP:UPANDCOMING) and suggests someone whose career has not reached the stage of WP:Notability. Wikipedia articles are for those who have arrived. The inclusion criterion is called Wikipedia:Notability, and looks for references showing "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject." Significant means more than just listing-type mentions; reliable excludes Youtube, Facebook, blogs, places where anyone can post anything; independent excludes the subject's own website, affiliated ones and anything based on press releases. The test is, have people not connected with the subject thought it significant enough to write substantial comment about? See also WP:Notability (summary) and WP:Notability (people).
You certainly need to think hard about the fact that a Wikipedia article is quite different from a page on a social-networking site. If an article about you is accepted, others can and will edit it, you will not be able to insist on your preferred version, and if criticism of you has been published in reliable sources, it will probably be included.
If, after considering all that, you want to try making an article about yourself, you should make a draft: click on Help:Userspace draft and fill in the title. That will make a draft page with a link for you to send it, when it is ready, to WP:Articles for creation where an experienced user will review it and either accept it or give you feedback.
When writing it, keep in mind that it should not be you telling the world about yourself, your hopes and dreams etc - it should be plain facts, cited to reliable, published sources. Things that only you know would be "original research". There is excellent advice from an experience Wikipedian at User:Uncle G/On notability#Writing about subjects close to you:

"When writing about subjects that are close to you, don't use your own personal knowledge of the subject, and don't cite yourself, your web site, or the subject's web site. Instead, use what is written about the subject by other people, independently, as your sources. Cite those sources in your very first edit. If you don't have such sources, don't write."

I would like a Wikipedia page about me to be created. I am a professional musician, and have several credentials, including magazine articles about me, in my possession. There is also information about me in online magazines, etc., on the Internet. Please let me know how to upload them to Wikipedia for review and whom I should avoid contacting (in the Talk section, etc.) so that the article in question may mantain its neutrality.

Dr8ator You cannot upload scans of articles to Wikipedia unless they are compatible with commons licensing. Please provide the sources that feature in-depth coverage of you and then we can assess whether or not they are suitable for a Wikipedia article. I've read the Creative Commons page, and the only question I have is: might there be any problems that might arise from submitting a newspaper or magazine article? Would I have to obtain written permission from the author or the publisher? It seems to me not to be really clearly defined on the CC licensing page.

O.K., so now all I need to know is where should I click to upload files: on UPLOAD FILE or on CONTRIBUTIONS?

Almost all the articles of reference about me are written in Portuguese- don't know if that would be a problem for you.

Finally, I would like a standard reference article about myself to be written, athough, as you can see on this talk page (whoever has access to it), I have been advised against doing so. I would simply like some basic biographical information about me to be present on Wikipedia.

Hi, before I upload anything to Wikipedia, I have two more questions:

Besides my given name, I have a stage name by which I now go by and by which I would prefer to be known- and an old stage name under which many references about me are posted on the Internet, on official news sites, etc. Could I opt to be known by my new stage name, with no mention of my given name or old stage name? and if not, could my real given name be mentioned secondarily, alongside my new stage name, at the very beginning of the article?

Also, how could I edit or contribute (just two or three lines with a link to one of my Youtube pages) on a particular Wikipedia page?

Dr8ator If the sources are in your given name or mention your given name, that is likely what would be used to create an article. If something is widely reported in reliable sources and for public consumption, Wikipedia cannot really censor it. Hope that answers your question. @Dr8ator:, thank you for your interest but this is not the place where such a request is likely to have any effect. You need to use the WP:Requested Articles page:
  1. Click This Link.
  2. Click the Music link in the Table of Contents.
  3. Click the Bands, Performers and Songwriters link for.
  4. Edit the page to insert the request in the correct alphabetical section for whichever of these names you would like the article to use (I suggest "Domingos-António Gomes"). Type * [[MISSING_ARTICLE_NAME]] and replace "MISSING_ARTICLE_NAME" with your preferred performer name.
  5. Add a condensed version of the above information.
  6. Save the changes.
I can't guarantee that this will get your article created, but it may be your best shot. I think I should note that this process depends on other editors deciding to be interested in the subjects listed on that page and there is no way to guarantee that will happen. I should also note that there is a Portuguese Wikipedia that may be applicable. There is a misconception in many areas that the English Wikipedia is somehow more central or the best or most important of the many Wikipedias. I have no way of knowing if you share that misconception so I'm just adding the Portuguese link in case you were unaware of its existence. Hope this helps. Help me clear this up- it doesn't make any sense to me!

I am writing this with regard to some questions that have arisen in my mind after following contributor Eggishorn's advice about how to submit an information about me to Wikipedia to have an article created:

1. I went to the page https://wiki.riteme.site/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Requested_articles/music/Performers,_bands_and_songwriters&action=edit, as it seems that that is precisely the page on which you can edit Wikipedia:Requested_Articles, and I saw that it states the following:

'Content that violates any copyrights will be deleted.'

Does this imply that in order to use any material from a source that has a copyright sign at the bottom of the page of an article about me (or doesn't!), I must obtain permission from the respective copyright holder?

2. It also states the following on the page https://wiki.riteme.site/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Requested_articles/music/Performers,_bands_and_songwriters&action=edit:

'Sources must be provided at the end of the article request, and the article itself must be linked.'

This seems really ambiguous to me, since there are three articles from which the main information about me should be drawn, and as for the statement that 'the article itself must be linked', what does that mean? After all, since several articles could contain chronologically intertwining information about the performer in question, shouldn't that stipulation rather be worded as 'any sentence, phrase, or paragraph which contains information that is relevant to the subject of the article(s) in question be immediately followed by a link to its respective source'? And by '(DESCRIPTION)' does this correspond to Eggishorn's mention of a 'condensed version of the above information'?

3. It is stated on that same page: "Please do not list yourself, or your own band, as this is considered promotional. Whether your band warrants inclusion in Wikipedia is a decision that should be made by someone else."

This doesn't make any sense to me; after all, what's the point in NOT mentioning myself if I want an article about me to be written?!

4. Should the brackets that be used for an article request be like these {{ }} or these [[ ]]?

  1. Facts are not subject to copyright. The presentation of facts may well be copyrighted, though. Thus we write Wikipedia articles by summarizing in our own words what reliable sources report; we don't copy-paste. Linking to sources about you is OK, copying text from those sources may be a problem.
  2. That indeed could be more clearly worded. "The article" is the Wikipedia article that is to be created. "Must be linked" means "You should encase the title of the proposed article in double square brackets". If the title of your proposed article were "Joseph H. Higginsbotham", you'd use the code [[Joseph H. Higginsbotham]] instead of [[YOUR ARTICLE TITLE]]. That would be displayed as "Joseph H. Higginsbotham", and clicking on that red link will lead to the place where the article will be once it's created. The description indeed should be a (very short) summary that allows others to tell why this person is important. To stay with my fictional example:
    Joseph H. Higginsbotham (1901-2012), British-Portuguese singer who serenaded the last pretender to the Portuguese throne on his deathbed and had the single of that live performance reach platinum sales.
    Finally, the sources should be given in place of the "(SOURCES)" part.
  3. I agree with you and would advise you to ignore that (in fact I'll start a discussion to get that line removed from that messagebox. While we do suffer from garage bands and would-be "up-and-coming artists" who want articles about themselves written while no one else cares about them, WP:Requested articles still would be the appropriate venue for them (though there is, of course, the possibility that requests won't be acted on). Trying to write about themselves on their own would likely end more badly.
  4. For the * [[YOUR ARTICLE TITLE]] (DESCRIPTION) (SOURCES) part, the brackets should be square ones: [[ ]] (see also 2. above). Curly brackets also have a function on Wikipedia (related to templates), so you may encounter places where curly brackets are required, but I think our instructions generally are very clear on which brackets should be used at what time. According to this advice, I deduce that I should go to the page https://wiki.riteme.site/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Requested_articles/music/Performers,_bands_and_songwriters&action=edit

...and insert * Domingos-Antonio Gomes between the entries of DJ Jackson and Donna Marie (or between the entries of Anoop Kammaran and Approaching Nirvana, if I used my current stage name, Antonio Domingos, which I would prefer). Would there be any problem using my stage name and adding 'born....., also known as.....'?

I'm really not sure as to what kind of brackets I should use in the above request example, as Eggishorn has explicitly typed in curly brackets, but I've leafed through quite a bit of entries on that editing page, and I haven't detected curly brackets anywhere, just square brackets. Please clarify this for me!

Also, I would prefer that all texts pertaining to me derived from Portuguese articles or texts be translated into English, as English is the only true international language. (I don't mind having a Wikipedia article about me in Portuguese, but it is much more important and useful to me to have one in English).

One last question: is it true that if my entry is accepted, it should take only two weeks to be published?

You should file the request under whatever name independent sources most commonly use to refer to you. I wouldn't bother with "also know as" or the like in the request; hopefully the sources you'll cite will address that anyway. If your current stage name isn't how you're most commonly referred to, I'd suggest sorting the request under "Gomes".
Regarding the brackets, it's either-or. It will work the way Eggishorn demonstrated and you did it (note that there aren't just curly brackets but also another snippet of code within the curly brackets; that's one of those templates I mentioned), and it will work with square brackets (then without the snippet of code, as I did it in my previous reply).
Since this is the English Wikipedia, our articles are written in English, not Portuguese. Sources used in the article may still be Portuguese (such as Portuguese newspapers, for example), but not the article itself. The Portuguese Wikipedia is a separate sister project.
Unfortunately I wouldn't expect that it takes only two weeks for an article about you to be created. Basically you'll have to wait until a volunteer comes along who is interested enough in the topic to take up your request and write an article about you (assuming that you meet our inclusion criteria in the first place; I'm not entirely sure you do, but providing high-quality reliable third-party sources that discuss you in some detail should help settle that question). That may happen quickly or less quickly; we can't guarantee the two weeks, and personally I'd expect it will take significantly longer (on the other hand, you might also get lucky and have it happen faster). Hi, I've been checking, over the past few days, a new article that I created about myself on Wikipedia. The article is entirely neutral consisting exclusively of reliable citations from reliable sources, and has already been reviewed, but I keep seeing a box of text at the top of the page that states that the article may not meet Wikipedia's notability guidelines. It suggested/requested that secondary sources should be added, so I've done so; simply one of the sources, relevant information about me may be hard to find. Here is the source:

Hi, Antonio. I hope I can help you with this. Firstly, I can see that you've gone about creating an article about yourself in an honest and open manner. That, itself, is a refreshing change. A template flagging up concerns about whether any given page meets our criteria on WP:NOTABILITY can be added by any editor. It should be a prompt to those who care about that page to address those concern by providing third-party, independent evidence to show the subject is notable, as defined by Wikipedia, not anyone else. I would strongly advise against removing it.
To be frank, at first glance I can't myself see how the page about you does actually meet Wikipedia:Notability (music). The place to find out what the concensus of editors is, is to submit an article for discussion at Articles for Deletion. I'll take a more detailed look sometime when I've access to a browser with a translate facility and decide whether that's an appropriate course of action, or not. Does this make sense? In short, it's probably best not to. YouTube links always are very tricky due to copyright issues. Chopin himself is long dead, but is the specific recording copyrighted? By whom? Is the YouTube video itself OK from a copyright point of view? All of that may be difficult to tell, and we should not link to copyright violations from Wikipedia. So unless that's some official video channel associated with the recording, I wouldn't link to it. Huon (talk) 22:23, 17 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

False Information on Relevant Wikipedia Page!

Hi, in the Following article

....the following quote is mentioned:

«In January 2012 he attained the Guinness World Record for the “most piano key hits in one minute” with 765 key hits, which record hasn’t been broken ever since.»

This is a false statement, as I am the current official holder (It also contradicts what is stated in the beginning of the article)

Would I be authorized to edit this, or is it best to leave it up to a higher-level Wikipedia contributor?
