ArbCom 2023 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2023 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 11 December 2023. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

"Municipality"

Občina is part of the name in Slovenian (unlike, say, "the village of Brezje", where vas 'village' is not part of the name) and it is also capitalized in Slovenian—hence Občina Lendava 'Municipality of Lendava' (see also here). It's the same as writing Dallas County with a big "C" or Lake Victoria with a big "L". Doremo (talk) 16:24, 19 February 2024 (UTC)

Hi Doremo - I realise this refers to a fairly old (2019) edit, but when writing on obvious European topics with obvious English references, please do not change the character of the page by adding American spelling "sp=us" in conversion templates, as you did here. English spellings ('metre', etc.) are the norm throughout Europe, not American ('meter', etc.), so English should be used, per MOS:TIES and MOS:CONSISTENT. I've changed that instance to "abbr=on" to avoid this faux pas, but could you check for any others, please. Thanks! - MPF (talk) 15:55, 21 July 2024 (UTC)

This is not correct. MOS:TIES applies only to English-speaking countries (Dianthus carthusianorum has no tie to an English-speaking country), and MOS:CONSISTENT does not apply (the article's language variety is undefined). Doremo (talk) 16:51, 21 July 2024 (UTC)

Sorry, but that's not true; English is very widely used as a second langauge in the EU and is an official language of the EU; and the version used is English, not American. So it does apply, as the species is widespread in several EU countries. - MPF (talk) 18:57, 21 July 2024 (UTC)

That is debatable; as I mentioned, European Union usage is English, not American. That should be respected, too. But I will turn it round: why did you breach what you thought was the article's MOS:COMMONALITY by deliberately and unnecessarily adding American spelling to a page that you thought was undefined Engvar, to a topic to which American has zero relevance? It isn't an American plant, that it should be written about in American.

But also, although I had largely written the first post-stub version (in 2007) in common language, it turns out I had not entirely done so: I used the term 'altitude' as the English textbooks I was using as references did, and as I normally would as a native-born English speaker. I had wondered why you made the odd change of 'altitude' to 'elevation', and did a search for differences in meaning. The only sites I could find that supported your change (e.g. here) are coming from an American viewpoint; in regular English, 'altitude' is correct in this situation. And thus, the page was actually written in English, not American. - MPF (talk) 20:54, 21 July 2024 (UTC)
