About Conflict of Interest editing
[edit]Hello! Thank you for disclosing, here, that you are Donald McNeil. That is the proper thing to do when you are editing with a conflict of interest. For the most part, "COI editors are strongly discouraged from editing affected articles directly, and can propose changes on article talk pages instead.
" What you should do is request on the article's talk page that someone make the edit, and then an uninvolved editor will decide whether to add it or not. In the case of your recent addition about the Pulitzer Prize, I have removed it. That is because the actual award did not name you, or anyone else, and that is a requirement if we are to say that someone won a Pulitzer. As for your comment to Fox News, since that was something you yourself said, we do not regard it as neutral or verified, which are basic requirements at Wikipedia. In the future, if you think something should be added or changed to your article, you should post a note on the article talk page, identify yourself, and suggest the change you think should be made. For an example of how this works, see here, where a person who works at the law firm identifies herself and makes requests for changes - virtually all of which were actually made since they were neutral and verifiable. If you have any comments or questions, you can ask here on your user talk page; I will see it. -- MelanieN (talk) 20:53, 23 June 2021 (UTC)
- Please see my suggestion on the article's talk page about a way we could mention the Pulitzer in the article, even though we can't say that you personally won a Pulitzer. -- MelanieN (talk) 15:41, 25 June 2021 (UTC)
BTW I just now noticed your request, made years ago, that the name of the article be changed to Donald G. McNeil Jr. because that is how you always list your name in your reporting. I have made the change and I apologize that no-one noticed or acted on this years ago. All links to the old name will still go to the new article via a WP:Redirect. -- MelanieN (talk) 16:01, 25 June 2021 (UTC)
Thank you! Just that change is huge. When you're a Jr. with a relatively common name, it's a constant struggle. (And no, I'm not related to the host of Don McNeill's Breakfast Club. Or not that I know of anyway. All McNeils hail from a very small island in the Hebrides and few of our ancestors could spell, so you never know...)
I also see that there is an earlier request for a picture. Is that still wanted?
