Pro Bowl selections

Greetings, Chris. In answer to your question, the consensus was determined by an actual RfC on the WP:NFL talk page. Please see the sectioned entitled "Request for Comments" in Archive 9 of the WP:NFL talk page. In addition to addressing the use of the word "selection" in formatting infobox honors, there are also extended discussions regarding the use of the redundant "1x" and other unnecessary words like "champion" and "winner." Please note that this does not preclude the use of the word "selection" and the like in main body text, but only in the context of the space-limited infoboxes. Chris, please note that the !vote was 7 to 1 on the specific question of whether we should omit the word "selection." Seven to one is a pretty darn strong consensus, especially in the context of an actual RfC that was properly noticed on the NFL and CFB talk pages and was open for comment for almost two weeks. The only editor opposed (i.e. supporting the continued use of the word "selection") was the IP user who had inserted most instances of "selection" in the first place. That having been said, there is no reason why you should not use the word "alternate" to differentiate Pro Bowl alternates from actual selections. I continue to use the word "alternate" in the NFL player infoboxes when it applies for the exact reason you suggest. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 23:39, 4 January 2013 (UTC)

Okay. I guess I just feel that "Pro Bowl" and "Pro Bowl alternate" get more muddled rather than having "Pro Bowl selection" vs "Pro Bowl alternate." But consensus is consensus.►Chris Nelson^Holla! 23:52, 4 January 2013 (UTC)

BTW, I'm glad to see that you are actively editing again, and it looks like most of the past controversy has slipped into history. Several of the strongest football editors have faded away recently, and we have a lot of newbies and IP users who don't see the Big Picture in terms of WP policy and guidelines or consistent formatting. There's a lot of room for an experienced editor like yourself to do a lot of good, constructive editing on football articles. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help, if there is a discussion in which you feel I should be involved, or if you just want a sounding board for an idea or two. Greetings, Abyssa, and thank you for inquiring regarding the flag icons. Per MOS:FLAG, flag icons are not supposed to be used as mere decoration generally, nor to symbolize a city, state, province or country cited in article text, list or infobox. In the dinosaur fossils list, simply adding the flags of the states, provinces and countries where the fossil ranges are located is not permitted. NFL player infobox, residence parameter

I already mention this on the article's talk page, some ten months ago. Nobody reacted. How long am I supposed to wait for "consensus"? I simply acted per WP:BRD. --bender235 (talk) 12:37, 10 January 2013 (UTC)

Bender235, a residence field seems unnecessary to me. Where a player resides in retirement does not strike me as a particularly core piece of data. It can be noted sufficiently in the body of the article. Jweiss11 (talk) 12:49, 10 January 2013 (UTC)

Bender, it would be appropriate to raise the issue on both the template talk page and the WP:NFL talk page. Template:Infobox NFL player is already a very large template when all options are used, and can become ridiculously large when the subject player has numerous career honors. A "current residence" parameter is also problematic because good sources don't exist for a majority of players, and it requires constant update. It's also not terribly relevant. Most current players live in the metropolitan where the team is located, but many also split time elsewhere including their home towns. NFL.com is a reliable source for birth places and high schools (a good proxy for home towns). Tracking the current residence of retired players is difficult, again, because few reliable sources exist that are regularly updated for players after they retire. If there is some reason for including a player's current residence, and a reliable source exists, then it may always be included in the body text. Not every factoid about a player needs to be included in the article infobox. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 13:00, 10 January 2013 (UTC)

dashes

Thanks for letting me know, Dirtlawer1. I won't change anymore of them. To me, they are both great to serve for in between scores of games and teams' records as I've noticed authors use them both for this reason. I kept some of my en dashes between scores, etc. Just a preference (en dashes are great in between years), but I respect other authors' work totally. I was just changing en dashes where I had made the edit for the en dash before (from Sept - late December). I won't edit anymore of them, I promise. Flags on WBC rosters

Why did you remove the flags on the 2013 World Baseball Classic rosters for the baseball teams that they play on? You said it was "inappropriate" but see 2009 World Baseball Classic rosters, 2010 FIFA World Cup squads, and Basketball at the 2012 Summer Olympics – Men's team rosters just to name a few examples where the flags were used. Perhaps I am misunderstanding, but what makes this different? Please let me know. Thanks. Smartyllama (talk) 18:27, 18 January 2013 (UTC)

Greetings, Smartyllama. I just checked the links you provided. The use of flag icons for individual players on team rosters (or their home club) is not appropriate there, either, and it appears to be a function of the common roster template coding used in each case. To be clear, there is simply no justifiable reason to use flag icons to designate the home country of professional sports teams that do not represent the home country in international competition, and none of the professional baseball teams listed actually compete in international sports events. For this same reason, we do not use flag icons in articles about MLB, NBA, NFL or college sports teams or their respective athletes.

Please don't misunderstand me; I'm actually a strong advocate of the appropriate and properly limited use of flag icons in sports articles. Their use is supposed to be limited to designating national teams and athletes that compete in international sport events. Please note, however, there is actually strong support for banning flag icons altogether because of the overuse and inappropriate use of flag icons.

If you're interested in preserving the appropriate use of flag icons in sports articles, please feel free to express your opinion regarding the use of flag icons in sports articles in this ongoing Request for Comments. Otherwise, their use may be banned altogether if editors who believe in their appropriate use don't speak up. The same folks who overuse and abuse flag icons also tend to avoid serious discussions about their use. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 19:02, 18 January 2013 (UTC)
