Request for assistance with Indian English
[edit]Greetings,
I am a published author working on my second novel. There is a brief scene featuring a character speaking English with an Indian accent. I have been using the wikipedia entry on "Indian English" to help me write this section phonetically and idiomatically, but i'm sure I am making numerous naive and inaccurate representations. Would you be willing to take a look at the short section and provide feedback? It's about 6 sentences long.
Thank you for your time. You can reach me at juxtapozbliss@yahoo.com.
Dear Juxtapozbliss,
Thanks for your message. I hope you will come back and read the answer. May I request you to sign your message by putting 3 ~ marks please! That will help me to reach your page and I will be glad to assist you by communicating through our home pages rather than email addresses. You know spam is the biggest problem, as a result I just keep directing mails with slighest of unknown entry to my spam. Sorry, I am not revealing my email in public.
Juxtapozbliss 21:34, 12 April 2007 (UTC) [Is the above the symbols i am supposed to add to the entry?]
Thank you for assisting me, Doctor. I'm going to give you a very brief summary of my book and then copy the section that i am working on that features an Indian-English dialect. My book is a fantastical journey into an alternate reality where mythological creatures come to life in unusual ways. Also in this place, animal and human genetic structure hybridizes randomly (which is why i'm refering to "homochrome biological prospectus" -- a made up term). The book is a journey toward enlightenment in the face of radical change. The particular section i am working on features a character named "Colonel Black" who represents, in a way, colonial oppression. His accent changes from page to page to represent a variety of the countries that were colonized over the centuries and before eventually colonization was thrown off. Dialects being one of the results of colonization. The use of the term "homo" below is short for homo sapiens...something which is made clear in later pages of the book. i'm also making a parallel between colonial oppression and homophobia, a statement that all forms of control and oppression are similar in nature. At any rate, here is the text. In brackets is the "Translation" of what i'm trying to say. Thank you for your assistance.
“Saahib…ho-ehmo is funny. Yes, indeed. Dey eat eat dere own child’s future. Actually like wirus. But actually lookin-gh ona you now—please!—I perceive rain is slow di homochrome aspect ona your bio-elogica pro-spec-ticus. Which isa vedy goot, because…I bein-gh ho-ehmo hunter-wallah, is what my name is called.” [Mister. Homo (sapiens) are strange. They eat their own children’s future. Like a virus. Looking at you, now, I can clearly see the rain has slowed the homochrome aspect of your biological prospectus. Which is good for you, because I’m a homo hunter.]
“You’re a what?!?!” Raised my voice.
“Yes, di same is true. I would hunt ho-ehmos ona time to time.” [Yes, it’s true. I hunt homos from time to time.]
“What…where do you do that?”
“Just I would drive to dis ting, di Metro. Ho-em of deh ho-ehmo, right? Not too damn long. You goa wid me?” [I would drive to the city. Home of the homos, right? It’s not far. Why don’t you go with me?]
“I’m…not sure.”
“Metro-shmetro, do no be in tension. Is boring-boring. Free of cost! Where you are going anyway?” [The City - don't be stressed. It’s boring there. No charge to go. What else do you have to do anyway?]
Dr. Dinesh Karia 14:45, 16 April 2007 (UTC) writes
[edit]Dear Juxtapozbliss,
Nice to see the dialect, especially in Indian accent. However, I am affraid, there isn't unique accent covering the whole of India. To ellaborate a little further I should give the following list to make the Indian accents clear.
- They : Southern part Dey Central and Western parts Dhe Eastern part Dhey
- Their: South Deir Central Western Dher Eastern Dhe-ar
- Their: South Der Central Western Dher Eastern Dhere North: Dhere(the e like a is extended)
- Indeed is indid al most everywhere, (now changing)
- In Maharashtra (part of southern India where Bombay is located) V is pronounced like VHEE; In Eastern part V becomes B
- Actually: Actully
- the: In western part Dhee In central and eastern part dee and in southern part da.
- perceive : pershiv
- Metro is relatively a new-commer to India. We used city as sheety
- demn --indicating a sort of superlative degree -- is relatively a new-commer to India. We used city as more and much
Looking at the History, the English Language first entered into India from Western and Eastern India, prominently from Eastern Part. Thus the conversation could be.
“Saahib…ho-ehmo is funny. Yes, indid. Dhey eat dhe-ar own child’s foochure. Actully like bairus. But actully lookin-gh ona you now—pleaze!—I pershive rain is slow dee homochrome espect ona your bio-elogicle (like kil) pro-spec-tius. Mathematics CotW
[edit]Hey Dine, I am writing you to let you know that the Mathematics Collaboration of the week(soon to "of the month") is getting an overhaul of sorts and I would encourage you to participate in whatever way you can, i.e. nominate an article, contribute to an article, or sign up to be part of the project. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks--Cronholm144 21:10, 13 May 2007 (UTC)
Also, if you are not doing so already, the articles on Indian mathematicians need lots of work and I think you just the man for the job. Happy editing!
Topological space
[edit]Thank you for your addition to Topological space. And I have a small comment. It is good that the language used in articles be formal, so words like "handy", "eyeattracting", etc., be avoided, or replaced with words like "important", "elegant", etc. Just a note. :) Cheers, Oleg Alexandrov (talk) 03:07, 22 May 2007 (UTC)
Help me

How should I edit the matter in the infobox of a content page of an article?
I visited a page Narendra Modi and found that in the infobox on the content page the starting date of the term of Mr. Modi as a Chief Minister was not mentioned. This belonged to the Infobox of Indian Politician on the page. Looking at the help and example of the infobox, I could learn that by adding term_start = [October 7]][[2001]. I did it, but the preview page spoiled the original infobox. I thought that after saving the page it may show the correct infobox. But that also did not happen. In fact, instead of the infobox, what appeared was the code of infobox. So I undid my editing and restored the content to the previous state. May I know how should I edit the page Narendra Modi? My edit is listed below.
{{Infobox Indian politician |name = Narendra Modi |image = Narendramodi.jpg |order = 14th |office = Chief Minister of Gujarat |term_start = [October 7]], [[2001] |term_end = |birth_date = 17 September 1950 |birth_place = Vadnagar, Mehsana district, Gujarat, India |residence = Gandhinagar, Gujarat |death_date = |death_place = |constituency = Maninagar |salary = |term = |order = Chief Minister of Gujarat |predecessor = Keshubhai Patel |successor = Incumbent |party = Bharatiya Janata Party |spouse = none |children = none |religion = Hindu |email = cm@gujaratindia.com |footnotes = |date= 08 March || year = 2009 | |source = http://www.gujaratassembly.gov.in/chiefminister.htm Government of Gujarat }} Dineshjk (talk) 08:41, 9 March 2009 (UTC)
- This is something you should make a sandbox for. Using your own userspace, like creating a User:Dineshjk/Sandbox1 article to test this code will ensure you can test in a safe environment without screwing with the article's coding until you're ready. If you have questions regarding infoboxes, you may take a look at the source code of the infobox and find what the correct syntax you need to insert the start term date. The template link you should use for future reference -
{{Infobox Indian politician}}
can be written as Template:Infobox Indian politician. Go ahead and look at the documentation and review the proper usages of the infobox. If the start term does not exist, you'll need to propose on the template's talk page or the relevant WikiProject's talk page for assistance. Have a good day. - Jameson L. Unreferenced BLPs
[edit]Hello Dineshjk! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 1 of the articles that you created is tagged as an Unreferenced Biography of a Living Person. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. In addition, to insure verifiability, all biographies should be based on reliable sources. if you were to bring this article up to standards, it would greatly help us with the current 3 article backlog. Once the article is adequately referenced, please remove the {{unreferencedBLP}} tag. Here is the article:
- Darshan Jariwala - Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs) · FENS · JSTOR · TWL
Thanks!--DASHBot (talk) 21:43, 8 January 2010 (UTC) I should love neither to get credit nor to welcome any criticism for the material I have not posted. However that has happened by the bot you are managing. I received the above message regarding the following article which does not include my contribution.
- Darshan Jariwala - Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs) · FENS · JSTOR · TWL
Hope to see you in action removing the message on my talk page. Dr. Dinesh Karia(Talk) (contribs) 00:29, 9 January 2010 (UTC)
- It seems that you created the article. I am not sure what is wrong here. Tim1357 (talk) 04:13, 9 January 2010 (UTC)
Oh I am sorry, I should have written like, "My initial article contained only the well-known facts about Darshan Jariwala like his mother and his background and it was so much known to the public that it did not require any reference. Later on the added material was not posted by me."
Sorry again for an unclear message.

WikiProject India Tag & Assess 2012 Contest
[edit]Hello friends, we are a number of editors from WikiProject India have got together to assess the many thousands of articles under the stewardship of the project, and we'd love to have you, a fellow member, join us. These articles require assessment, that is, the addition of a WikiProject template to the talk page of an article, assessing it for quality and importance and adding a few extra parameters to it.
As of March 11, 2012, 07:00 UTC, WikiProject India has 95,998 articles under its stewardship. Of these 13,980 articles are completely unassessed (both for class and importance) and another 42,415 articles are unassessed for importance only. Accordingly, a Tag & Assess 2012 drive-cum-contest has begun from March 01, 2012 to last till May 31, 2012.
If you are new to assessment, you can learn the minimum about how to evaluate from Part One of the Assessment Guide. Part Two of the Guide will help you learn to employ the full functionality of the talk page template, should you choose to do so.
You can sign up on the Tag & Assess page. There are a number of awards to be given in recognition of your efforts. Come & join us to take part in this exciting new venture. You'll learn more about India in this way.

Your recent edits
[edit]Hello and welcome to Wikipedia. When you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion (but never when editing articles), please be sure to sign your posts. There are two ways to do this. Either:
- Add four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment; or
- With the cursor positioned at the end of your comment, click on the signature button ( or ) located above the edit window.
This will automatically insert a signature with your username or IP address and the time you posted the comment. This information is necessary to allow other editors to easily see who wrote what and when.
Thank you. --SineBot (talk) 13:14, 4 August 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks. After a very long time I am again editing something or making comments on something on WP. I think, that is the reason I missed one tilde and put only three. I will do now on. Dr. Dinesh Karia(Talk) (contribs) 13:21, 4 August 2015 (UTC)

WikiProject India 10,000 Challenge
[edit]Melukote
[edit]Isn't there a difference between the 2 statements -
- Brahmins did not allow MANY Shudras to stay.
- Brahmins did not allow ANY Shudras to stay.
The 1st statement is quoted from an online book. This statement has been exaggerated to say Brahmins did not allow ANY shudras to live there in this article. Furthermore the online book 'journey from Madras to Mysore' [1] says '40 years ago 1000s of Brahmins lived here & they did not allow MANY Shudras to stay there'. This statement by the author could have been made, based on his conversation with a villager perhaps during his travel. How can you Quote such a statement to be a FACT! Brahmins & Shudras still exist. Adding such a statement like Brahmins did not allow ANY Shudras is quite divisive , when the source itself is not credible. The justification given by Walrus user is that he added this statement to clarify why the place only has primarily Brahmins. I find this reasoning not convincing. I personally don't think a reason needs to be given for why a place is primarily inhabited by Christians or Muslims or Sikhs. Moreover Walrus has exaggerated the comments from the book, the comments which were probably sought from a villager by the author of an incident that occurred 40 years ago. I tried to talk to him, but he reverted all my edits! My Edits undone by Walrus:
In the talk page, I only requested Walrus to replace 'Brahmins did not allow ANY Shudras' to 'Brahmins did not allow MANY Shudras' & tried to reason with him, as to why even the statement was needed ? But instead Walrus user insists on keeping the statement 'Brahmins did not allow ANY Shudras' & does not want to even change 'ANY' to 'MANY', even though book states 'MANY'. Furthermore the author says that this incident happened 40 years before his travel there & he could have spoken to a villager who gave this info, which is not a reliable !
Brahmins & Shudra communities live in harmony today. To bring up & exaggerate statements such as this from the past is divisive & the reason for adding this statement is bizzare. His own words from the talk page : That bit about caste is relevant to clarify to the reader why this place is the primely inhabited by the Mandyam Iyengar community. The "bit" abt caste added was an exaggeration & I don't think a reason needs to be given for why a place is primarily inhabited by Christians or Muslims or Sikhs. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 116.75.189.243 (talk) 05:05, 8 December 2020 (UTC)
