Additional tips
[edit]Here's some extra tips to help you get around in the 'pedia!
- If you want to play around with your new Wiki skills the Sandbox is for you.
- You can sign your name using three tildes (~). If you use four, you can add a datestamp too. Five will get you the datestamp only.
- You may want to add yourself to the new user log.
- If you ever think a page or image should be deleted, please list it at the votes for deletion page. There is also a votes for undeletion page if you want to retrieve something that you think should not have been deleted.
- If you're still entirely confused, or would like to get a better grasp of your wikipedia skills, and you have an IRC client (or don't mind getting one), check out the Bootcamp. It's not what it sounds like, but it is fun and can help you with your editing skills.
- If you're bored and want to find something to do, try the Random page button in the sidebar, or check out the Open Task message in the Community Portal.

Fair use rationale for Image:WaitingfortheInterurban.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:WaitingfortheInterurban.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. [edit]Wikipedia does not allow test pages in the main namespace (where the articles are), so I've deleted the page you created. If you want a page to show other people how to use Wikipedia, you can either use the Wikipedia: Sandbox, your userpage, or you can create a user subpage. Editing Wikipedia is the same no matter what page you're editing, so there will be no loss to demonstrating editing in your userspace. User Page Displayed as Article?
[edit]The page 'Category:Religious faiths, traditions, and movements' is currently displaying a link to your User page, which contains material relating to something you call 'Damon huardism'. This material appears to be similar to an article called 'Damon huardism' which was deleted on 12 December 2007 having been assessed to be substantially incoherent and lacking content. Is there a specific reason why you have now linked the User page to that category listing instead, and if not, can the tag on your User page please be removed? - Shrivenzale (talk) 01:50, 7 January 2008 (UTC)
- I don't think anyone really minds things like "Damon Huardism" being in your sandbox pages -- at least, I don't, I thought it was kind of funny -- but when you add the article to real categories like Caetgory:People from Yakima, Washington or you run the risk of misleading people and getting them upset to find both the article about the real person and your joke. I think if you took out the category links, you probably wouldn't be bothering anyone (I suggest that this goes for any links you might have made into "Damon Huardism", for the same reason). I hope you don't mind; I'd be unhappy to think that Wikipedia couldn't handle bits of humour in their proper place, but when they get mixed up with the real thing, that can be a problem. I don't know what the official policy is about joke pages in personal sandboxes, so this isn't an official complaint, just a friendly suggestion. Invitation to Meetup/Seattle6, a focus group
[edit]Hello. I'm part of a research group at the University of Washington (Seattle campus), and my group is reaching out to Wikipedians in the Puget Sound area. We're hosting a focus group designed to gather information on what Wikipedians would like to know about each other when interacting on Wikipedia. Our end goal is to create an embedded application that helps people quickly know more about others' history and activity on Wikipedia, and we feel our design will be much more useful if it's based on insights of users like you.
I'm hoping that the chance to help out local researchers, to engage in lively face-to-face discussion with other Seattle Wikipedians, and to contribute to Wikipedia in a new way will entice you to join us. The session lasts 2 hours and snacks are provided - one is April 8 (Wednesday) starting at 6 pm and the other is April 18 (Saturday) starting at 10 am. (Sessions will be held on UW Seattle campus - directions will be sent after registration.) Your contribution will be greatly appreciated!

New deal for page patrollers

In order to better control the quality of new pages, keep out the spam, and welcome the genuine newbies, the current system we introduced in 2011 is being updated and improved. The documentation and tutorials have also been revised and given a facelift. Most importantly a new user group New Page Reviewer has been created.
Under the new rule, you may find that you are temporarily unable to mark new pages as reviewed. However, this is nothing to worry about - most current experienced patrollers are being accorded the the new right without the need to apply, and if you have significant previous experience of patrolling new pages, we strongly encourage you to apply for the new right as soon as possible - we need all the help we can get, and we are now providing a dynamic, supportive environment for your work.
