Translations

[edit]

Hi, Degeno, and Welcome to Wikipedia! I noticed you have used machine translation in articles like Fußgönheim, and perhaps others. Unless you are sufficiently fluent in German to have translated it yourself without assistance, please don't use machine translation. MT can be useful to save typing if you already know German, but not if you don't and are relying it to do the translation work. So, please don't use MT, cleaned up or not, unless you feel qualified to translate. And if you are fluent enough, then please add the {{Babel}} badge to your User page, indicating your level of fluency in German and/or other languages. Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 06:49, 27 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

You will find an interesting explanation in http://www.vg-maxdorf.de/cms/images/stories/wappenbeschreibungen.pdf Agathoclea (talk) 09:53, 28 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Agathoclea: Thank you! I don't speak German but it looks like that says they had an old coat of arms before the current one. I'm interested in this because I have ancestors from there and I'm wondering if the evolution of the town name might hint at another theory for the original meaning of my last name. Do you know if "LA Speyer, C 14 Nr. 160 fol. 36v,39v,98v" a cite to an archive (i.e. does LA Speyer = [1])? Do you know what "Gönheim" means specifically? Does "Fuchsbach" mean "fox creek"? Thanks, Degeno (talk) 19:14, 28 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I guess the reference is to the state archive, as he numbering system looks like it. Fuchsbach = fox creek. As far as the etymology is concerned I could not find anything, but the obvious origin would be that the place was the home (Heim) of somebody called Gönn or Ginn or similar. But that theory would need some proof. If you still have relatives in the area you might be able to get someone to consult a local history book for more information. de to en translations

[edit]

Hello Degeno,

On dewiki, maintaining former attributions is custom, for articles you translate directly from dewiki source to enwiki, we can import the dewiki history to the enwiki article. Just list the completed translations at WP:RFPI and we will take care of it. If you have other ones to do, we can import the dewiki page to a personal sandbox that you can later 'move' when done - same thing - just as at WP:RFPI. Happy editing, — xaosflux Talk 19:27, 4 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Xaosflux: I did that for the two articles I created new on the English wikipedia. I also expanded one existing article using translation, should I request that one too? I put the correct banners on all the talk pages. - Degeno (talk) 23:08, 4 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Don't do it for expansions - as the edit history would become mangled. — xaosflux Talk 00:58, 5 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Xaosflux and Degeno: Piggy-back question on this topic continues at User talk:Mathglot#de to en translations. Mathglot (talk) 04:08, 5 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
