Am i supposed to add subpages to userpage or talk page and i seem to be stuck in typewriter mode how do i get out of it?Deedee19482 11:31, 16 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Actually i'm lost,why is my text turning out like above?Deedee19482 11:33, 16 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Created sanbox and article page on userpage and it said no user under that
i believe.Deedee19482 11:36, 16 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hi - the reason typewriter mode is appearing is that you're entering a space at the beginning of this line, which is the code for this function. Not putting a space at the beginning of the link should solve this problem for you. To make a subpage, go to User:Deedee19482/sandbox (for example) and just create a new page there - you can ignore the warnings. Hope this helps :) Martinp23 11:39, 16 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Subpages perfectly acceptable in your own user space. Many users do create subpages. Articles cannot have subpages and you shouldn't create subpages outside of your own user space as a general rule, unless you are archiving a talk page. Within your own user space, though, go for it. I'm starting an article on something called the Modified Mercalli scale. It was thought up in 1900's. Later changed in 1931 to Wood-Neamann scale. It's used still in US to measure earthquake intensity. I can document it off the US Geological Survey. Being that it was done in 1931 and used by seismologists still today would it be copyinfringe to copy verbatim? Need it to explain measurements before Richter scale.Deedee19482 00:12, 17 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, you can't rip off other websites to include their text on Wikipedia, as they need to explicitly release their content to us under the GFDL provisions. You can quote webpages, citing the reference in the conventional way but it is best if you can create your own version of an explanation or description. I don't mean swapping sentences or paragraphs around so that it is slightly different. It is best to gather two-or-more sources and read them thoroughly in order to understand what they are trying to say about a subject before attempting to create your own encyclopedic content. The temptation to lean too heavily on one source can lead to producing something very similar, albeit unintentionally! Look at Wikipedia:Citing sources for examples of referring to particular sources in a prescribed manner. (aeropagitica) 00:22, 17 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I don't have doubts about your writing ability as I haven't seen any examples as of yet! I am more-than happy to review them if you want to provide a link for me. Believe it or not, people really do try what I wrote about above in the honest belief that they haven't broken copyright. If you want to extensively rewrite an article, why not try mentioning your plan on the article's Talk page, specifying which bits you are thinking of concentrating on? Another editor may well be able to assist you. Regards, (aeropagitica) 10:27, 17 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I am sorry. I tend to get straight to the point and other people might percieve it as rudeness. I understand other people involved with wiki might have questionable ethics and I've read some of the pages related to that. But personally I'm attractive to the creative aspects of the program. I would truly like to learn as well as contribute. Outside of school which is awhile back now my personal writing has been limited to poetry and a book that is still stuck in the begininng. My own personal weakness seems to be getting off the point. I was impressed with your userpage and that played a part with my choice of editor's. The areas of interest you expressed I took to be the sign of a disciplined person. In my personal experiance some of the best teachers lean toward being taskmasters. But I also see with all the other problems such as vandlism that you can't be a persoanl nursemaid either. I'm sorry if there was a misunderstanding. Thank you for your advice.Deedee19482 12:20, 17 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Pittsburgh event for Wikipedia's tenth anniversary

[edit]

Hi! Since you're a member of WikiProject Pittsburgh, I wanted to invite you to the Wikipedia Tenth Anniversary celebrations we're having in Pittsburgh on Saturday, January 15. During the daytime, we're going to be having a photo contribution drive where anyone can bring in their digital photos or prints and Wikipedians will teach people how to upload them and add them to articles, and maybe introduction to Wikipedia workshops as well. Then in the evening, we'll have fun at the Carson City Saloon. There will be free Wikipedia t-shirts and other goodies, as well. See the Pittsburgh meetup page for more details. I hope to see you there!--ragesoss (talk) 14:39, 1 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia:WikiProject Pittsburgh is rolling out some new features (see our discussion at WT:PITTSBURGH). We are also trying to determine how many members are active. If you could go to Wikipedia:WikiProject Pittsburgh/Members and move your name from inactive to the active or semi-active group (depending on your interest in Pittsburgh issue and overall activity) groups, this would be great. Hopefully in a near future you'll also receive our first newsletter with various information on what we have been doing, and what useful tools are available. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk 19:56, 26 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
