Photos on U.S. government sites
[edit]No, not all images on .gov or .mil sites are in the public domain, but most are. In general, U.S. government sites indicate (by giving a credit line) when an image is not U.S. government property and thus is copyrighted. Which ones were you thinking about? Lupo 14:51, 11 Oct 2004 (UTC)
US Govt images
[edit]Saw your message on Lupo's page... hope you don't mind if I chime in. AFAIK, most images on US Govt websites are held in the public domain. I understand they are not in the public domain if they are taken by a government worker who did not take it directly for work. However, you may still be able to use the image under fair use legal doctrine. My suggestion: have a look at one of my images on exploding whale to see how I justified fair use. (I used a checklist). Not sure if this helps answer your question, and also remember IANAL! - Ta bu shi da yu 14:52, 11 Oct 2004 (UTC)
Images...
[edit]Re Gregory W. Meeks: you must state the source where you got that image from. (And likewise for other images: all images should have a source.) Without source it is impossible for a third party to evaluate whether the image is tagged correctly. This is especially important for images tagged as "fair use", but citing sources is good practice anyway and should always be done. I usually do it in the upload comment itself, where I typically state "Description; from [<URL>].<br>tag". "Description" is typically short (might be just "Gregory W. Meeks" in this case), and "tag" is the appropriate tag ("PD" in this example). In most cases, that's sufficient, and I have to go edit the image description page only if I want to add more information. Lupo 07:15, 12 Oct 2004 (UTC)
- also.. regarding Theresa le pore.jpg .. the source shows it as a state of Florida web site. That is not US Federal government, you will need to research the State of Florida copyright laws on web sites to see if its legal to use it. That is why every image should have both source and copyright status so others can double check. All of this is for your own protection, you are personally legally liable for anything you upload to Wikipedia. Stbalbach 08:17, 12 Oct 2004 (UTC)
- U.S. state governments can hold copyright. The thing about government works being in the public domain applies only to the U.S. federal government. Most state governments, including Florida, see e.g. [1], do indeed copyright their works, a noteable exception being California, where most published gvt works are in the public domain. Foreign governments (such as France, Germany, the UK, Canada) usually do hold a copyright on their works, and one needs to check their terms carefully. For Image:Theresa le pore.jpg, a fair use claim could probably be made, given that the image is of poor quality, has no commercial value, and is used for information purposes only. (I'm not a lawyer, though, and personally I try not to upload pictures useable only under the fair use doctrine.) Lupo 10:08, 12 Oct 2004 (UTC)

are .edu images in the public domain?
[edit]I'm a little bit confused by the context of your question. In any case, I can tell you that in general, images from .edu sites are definitely not in the public domain, unless specifically stated to be so. Even for the case of public (state-run) universities in the U.S., for example University of California, University of Illinois, Colorado State University, etc., the copyright rules for the federal goverment do not apply because thos institutions are owned by individual U.S. states. That's pretty much my understanding of things (IANAL). -- Decumanus 22:20, 2004 Nov 16 (UTC)
- My understanding is that it is possible in some cases to claim fair use for .edu site images. But I am by no means an authority on that, even casual. I stay away from all such images and only create my own. It is best to consult other people about fair use standards in Wikipedia. Off the top of my head, I think fair use tends to be allowed when images are released to the public for publicity purposes (don't take that with anything more than a grain of salt). I think it is an unresolved issue for Wikipedia at the present time. -- Decumanus 22:37, 2004 Nov 16 (UTC)
I would caution you that not all .edu subdomains are for government institutions. Nonetheless, if you can justify fair use, then by all means go ahead and use the images. However I would also advise you to add the reasons why you think fair use applies in the image description page. - Ta bu shi da yu 02:04, 17 Nov 2004 (UTC)
Article Licensing
[edit]Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 2000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:
- Multi-Licensing FAQ - Lots of questions answered
- Multi-Licensing Guide
- Free the Rambot Articles Project
To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:
- Option 1
- I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
- DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual
OR
- Option 2
- I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
- DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual
Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" with "MultiLicensePD". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. -- Ram-Man (comment| talk)

1911EB scrubbing
[edit]Hey, I appreciate your scrubbing of the 1911EB lists! I have one little request; when I notice synonyms being listed together and break them into the semicolon-separated groups, could you not delink the one before the redir from other is created? I usually try to do it right away, but sometimes overlook, and it's more work to rediscover the redir opportunity without the blue link right there (Google searching of WP is terrible, tells me an article doesn't exist when I'm looking right at it). Request for Admin
[edit]- I decided to test my strength. Do you want to nominate me for admin?
Okay - you seem like a good candidate for it. Your lack of involvement with some of the areas of Wikipedia may count against you a little, but I think that what you have shown so far is definitely worth you being considered. Grutness|hello? 00:28, 21 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Done - now you need to go to Wikipedia:Requests_for_adminship/Darwinek to formally accept nomination and answer a few questions... Grutness|hello?
- Sad to say it doesn't look like you succeeded - this time. It wasn't an outright rejection, but a "failure of consensus", with a few more supporting than opposing, but not a big enough majority (80%, IIRC). I think that - if you clear up those copyvio problems - you've got a very good chance of becoming an admin if you try again in two or three months time. Grutness|hello? 05:47, 28 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Foo (Trinidad and Tobago) vs. Foo, Trinidad and Tobago
[edit]I got the impression from the naming convention that the former was preferable to the latter. Am I mistaken? (If so, I have a LOT of mis-named stubs). And thanks for adding "and towns" to List of cities in Trinidad and Tobago - I was always wondering what one does with a list that can't have more than two items. Guettarda 22:13, 21 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks for the clarification. And I do plan to keep adding to the list. They're pretty much all stubs, so now I need to convert them to full-fledged articles. Guettarda 22:40, 21 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Cameroon
[edit]Hi Darwinek - I suspect this is going to be a common problem with using regions rather than individual countries for geo-stubs, but technically Cameroon is west Africa, not central Africa (see the maps in the respective stub categories), so articles about towns in Cameroon should get "AfricaW-geo-stub". Good to see more articles being made and stubbed though! Grutness|hello? 01:35, 26 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Albert Gomes, categories
[edit]I noticed you fixed the categories on Albert Gomes - almost as soon as I created the article. Thanks for fixing them. I hadn't intended to leave both in - I entered them, previewed, and then forgot to fix it (cat's don't show up when you preview). The reason I put the TT category in there first had to do with the fact that Gomes was a national figure, so I was wondering about how that is usually handled. "People" is too broad a category. I suppose I could create a Trinidad and Tobago politicians (or is it, Politicians of Trinidad and Tobago? the convention on naming seems to keep changing). Anyway, thanks for catching my mistakes. Guettarda 16:21, 14 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks for the offer. I didn't realise you weren't an admin yet - figured anyone who makes that many nominations for adminship probably is one already. As for me - right now is definitely not the time - I think there are several people who are at least a little unhappy with me. I would really like to meet jguk's threshold before I tried for adminship - ie, getting an article to featured article status. I think I can do it eventually with Eric Williams - it's an article that is important for me to NPOV because I strongly dislike the man and his legacy, so if I can write a good, NPOV article about him (it's not easy for me to be NPOV about him) I feel I can do NPOV. Regardless of whether I get it to FAC or not, working on it is a good way to learn humility - and it has actually helped me get a more balanced view of the man. Guettarda 17:38, 14 Apr 2005 (UTC)

The Pitch Lake really isn't a lake - it looks like a badly maintained car-park. Not sure if the category is appropriate. There aren't any natural lakes in TT - just four dams/reservoirs. Guettarda 14:45, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- I made a list of reservoirs so the Cat isn't empty. But not, no natural lakes. Natural lakes actually aren't terribly common in land that was not glaciated - they fill in over the course of a few tens of thousands of years. Guettarda 15:03, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)
U.S. disambig
[edit]Hello. I reverted your move of the Cape Blanco (Oregon) article backs to the parentheses form. In North American geography articles, there is a general consensus to the parentheses when disambiguating geographical features such as rivers, lakes, mountains, etc. The reason is that in the U.S. and Canada, the comma form tends to be reserved for actual municipalities, of which some have the same name as geographic features (see Grand River for example, for an illustration of this). So Cape Blanco, Oregon would be the form used if there were a municipality named "Cape Blanco" in the state of Oregon. Of course, you're free to have a differnet opinion about how things should be, but it would go against the bulk of the articles and the general consensus that has emerged in this area for these North American articles. By the way, that's a nice satellite image. -- Decumanus 00:09, 2005 Jun 11 (UTC)
Image copyrights
[edit]Hi Darwin. What exactly did you ask them for when you asked permission? If they granted only permission to use the images in Wikipedia, then these are likely to be deleted since that is a non-free license. See Jimmy's mailing list post for details on this. Are you able to ask them to release the images under the terms of the GFDL or one of the free Creative Commons Licenses (not a non-commericial one)? Angela. 11:59, Jun 12, 2005 (UTC)
- Looking at the usage guidelines on their site, it seems the images are not free.
- "UN photographs are reproducible for editorial purposes only. They may not be used in advertising. All photos used must show the UN Photo credit line."
- "There is a charge of US $ 50.00, payable to the United Nations, for each UN photo used in publication. No payment is necessary for downloaded thumbnail images; payment should be made for downloaded larger images only when used in publication (see "Use of UN Photos" above). "
- Although they've said they don't charge for posting in websites, Wikipedia is allowed to be distributed offline, and people can and do publish it commercially, so I don't think these images can be used here unless they are willing to state that they are releasing them under a free license, with the understanding that this applies not only to this website, but to any re-use of Wikipedia's content, which may be commercial and may be offline. Angela. 15:34, Jun 12, 2005 (UTC)
- No. It's credit is given and copyright is attributed. See Wikipedia:Image_copyright_tags.

African American literature
[edit]Since you placed the request for expansion template on the African-American literature article, I was hoping that you would check out my recent additions to the article. I greatly expanded the history section of the article. As you probably know, this article covers a massive amount of territory. Even after my additions, I feel that the article needs more history on recent African American lit (1950s onward), more on the Harlem Renaissance, and an expanded criticism section. I'll try getting to these sections in the coming weeks but any help and feedback you can give is appreciated. --Alabamaboy 14:56, 19 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Cabral and Folklore
[edit]Hi Darwin, I'm new to this site, so hope netiquette is ok. Are you continuing to add to the Amilcar Cabral entry? I have some info to add too. Also, why the interest in American folkloristics? Are you a folklorist? And also the interest in African-American politicians, like the mayor of Newark? Eclectic interests for someone in Europe, if you don't mind my asking. Botkin
[edit]Hi Darwin, me again. Do you know how to change entry headings? Botkin's entry heading should more properly be Benjamin A. Botkin or B.A. Botkin (how he signed his books), not - as you point out - Ben. Also I've noticed other such mistakes in entry headings. I am new to this, so how can they be corrected? Also, what country are you in? Thanks, Bruxism 18:23, 23 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Thanks, yes, I'm still new to this and new to learning about alphabetizing links, so thanks for the pointer. But how did you change the entry heading? (I am from the U.S., from New Jersey basically). Thanks for your support. Bruxism 23:18, 23 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Thanks Darwin - I am learning. Now my next question: if you type "Botkin" in the search box and hit go, it redirects to one Sergei Botkin. I am wondering if it's possible (or if it's good netiquette) to undo the redirect page from Botkin to Sergei Botkin. When I go into "what links here" on the Sergei Botkin page, I see there are 3 entries that link to Botkin - would I need to go into each of those three pages and manually re-direct the links using the pipe | so that they say Sergei Botkin|Botkin? (I think I am getting the hang of this, in which case just tell me yes and I will do it.) I think this is important, because I hope to expand the Ben Botkin entry and also link some other entries to it, because in my field we believe he's a very important figure, with implications also for African American history. Also, his son is somewhat notable, and may merit an entry of his own someday. Bruxism 17:48, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Darwin, you're amazing. I will check this out more next week and fix the links, but today I am a little busy. No, Botkin was not African American himself by any means, but his edited volume from the ex-slave narratives, Lay My Burden Down, was the first book to treat oral testimony about slavery in the U.S. as historical evidence - and no other book would do so again for another 25 years after that. It was also the first edited volume on the ex-slave narratives marketed for a popular audience. Clearly I need to expand his entry, too. Thanks again! (Are you a student? What/where?) Bruxism 18:03, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Darwin: Now that I've added the entry on public folklore, I want to revert to the previous version of Benjamin Botkin - although I will add to this later on as well. How to revert? Thanks (btw, in answer to your question, no, I am no longer a student, well past that). Bruxism 01:29, 16 July 2005 (UTC)
Identifying plants
[edit]The first one is hard to identify looking at your picture. It could be a Prunus, but you should take a closer look at the leaves, the blossoms and, later in the year, at the type of fruit. Prunus armeniaca and Prunus cerifera are shrubs. But are there are a lot of hybrids and cultivars. This complicates the picture. As to the second picture, that is definitely a foxglove (Digitalis purpurea). JoJan 15:05, 25 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit]Good to see you back. Hope you had a good break. Any further thoughts on Adminiship? Guettarda 17:14, 25 July 2005 (UTC)
- Good to hear you had a good time. Unfortunately I taught summer classes, but I did manage to get away for a few days to a wedding, and I am off to a conference in 2 weeks, so I will call that a holiday too (thinking of re-visiting a town where I lived as a child). Living without internet would be too difficult though :) Next summer or the one after I plan to make it to Europe - my family in Germany, my wife's in England - I'd like to visit the Czech Republic too (have heard really good things from my parents). Guettarda 23:05, 25 July 2005 (UTC)
Terrorism incidents
[edit]I wonder if creating by-year subcategories might have been a mistake. There are a couple problems:
- Some terrorist incidents are sorted by date and some are not. This is confusing.
- Sorting by date is not extremely useful, and it prevents getting an overview of terrorist incidents. Weighing in favor of lumping everything together is the fact that the category is not excessively large.
Perhaps sorting by region would be more useful? Mirror Vax 16:46, 27 July 2005 (UTC)
Hi! You modified the image Image:Uscapitolindaylight.jpg, which I originally created. I realized that I never put a GFDL tag on that image, even though my intention was to dual-license it as GFDL and cc-by-sa. I'm going to put a GFDL tag on it now. If you have any problem with it (since you've created a modified version of it), please remove the tag and let me know. :) kmccoy (talk) 21:33, 30 July 2005 (UTC)

Congratulations
[edit]Hey there. Congratulations, you've just been made a sysop! You've volunteered to do housekeeping duties that normal users sadly cannot participate in. Sysops can't do a lot of stuff: They can't delete pages just like that (except junk like "aojt9085yu8;3ou BOB IS GAY"), and they can't protect pages in an edit war they are involved in. But they can delete random junk, ban anonymous vandals, delete pages listed on Votes for deletion (provided there's a consensus) for more than one week, protect pages when asked to, and keep the few protected pages that exist on Wikipedia up to date.
Almost anything you can do can be undone, but please take a look at The Administrators' how-to guide and the Administrators' reading list before you get started (although you should have read that during your candidacy ;). Take a look before experimenting with your powers. Also, please add Administrators' noticeboard to your watchlist, as there are always discussions/requests for admins there. My bad. You should probably put the actual link to the information at the bottom of the article instead of the generic NASA link, since it may cause the same reaction as mine.

Question about stubs
[edit]Hi Darwinek - you wrote: Do you plan to include Tibet to your Geo-stub tallying page?
- I hadn't intended to, no. Tibet-stub is for things specifically Tibetan about the culture, and can be added without stepping off that line of trying on to offend anyone. Making a separate Tibet-geo-stub, though, is likely to cause offence to someone somewhere. The China geo-stub category's not so big that it needs splitting yet, anyway. Maybe sometime, but it's not a high priority - for now Tibetan stubs can quite happily stay in there. In any case, I have enough of a job keeping up with other geo-stub splits! Grutness...wha? 00:53, 4 September 2005 (UTC)

Athletes formerly representing Kenya
[edit]Hi. I thought maybe we could make a category with athletes formerly representing Kenya (people who would go in that category include Abdullah Ahmad Hassan, Wilson Kipketer, Saif Saeed Shaheen, Bernard Lagat, Musa Amer Obaid, Belal Mansoor Ali and Youssef Saad Kamel). Or do you think that's a bad idea? And what should we call it? "Former Kenyan athletes" doesn't sound right. If you don't like the idea of a category, maybe we could listify? Punkmorten 13:47, 12 September 2005 (UTC)
- I like the idea of a list. I may not be the one to suggest names as English is not my first language. However, I've seen IAAF refer to the phenomenon as "transfers of allegiance". Maybe we can base the list title on that? For instance List of allegiance transfers in athletics? Because, you see, I think we shouldn't involve nationality in this. Punkmorten 16:20, 12 September 2005 (UTC)
Nationality change
[edit]Hi again. What is the difference between "nationality transfer" and "allegiance transfer"? Punkmorten 17:11, 12 September 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks for clarifying the issue. But how would you suggest that we implement such a distinction? Labelling Saeef Said Shaheen and others as "allegiance transfers" may create POV issues, seeing as Shaheen denies that money is substantially involved. Maybe we can add a small note for each athlete about the reason for the switch? Or maybe that would be problematic as well?
- Here is a sketch I made for a list:
Name of athlete | From nation | To nation | Reason |
---|---|---|---|
Wilson Kipketer | Kenya | Denmark | Travelled to Denmark as a foreign exchange student in 1990 |
Maryam Yusuf Jamal | Ethiopia | Bahrain | Political refugee |
Or, alternatively, without specific reasons (this might be more neutral):
Name of athlete | From nation | To nation |
---|---|---|
Wilson Kipketer | Kenya | Denmark |
Maryam Yusuf Jamal | Ethiopia | Bahrain |
Do you think it's wrong to list athletes like in the latter alternative? Punkmorten 17:50, 12 September 2005 (UTC)
- The list is now located at List of nationality transfers in athletics. Feel free to ad, update, discuss or even move the page to a better title if you want. Punkmorten 19:32, 12 September 2005 (UTC)

Pole vaulters
[edit]I think such a list would be fine. It could improve the somewhat thin coverage of pole vault on Wikipedia. We should maybe include a list of women who have reached 5 metres; alas it's only one person :) Punkmorten 11:35, 13 September 2005 (UTC)
- The name is okay, and I think it looks better with "m". Punkmorten 11:54, 13 September 2005 (UTC)
- Hi, I was watching Morten's talk page so I found out about the pole vaulter list and took the liberty to complete it. This list got me thinking, too. Is there an article (or a category of several articles) on "dream limits" in athletics and other sports, that is, results that are or have been conceived as important landmarks to beat, most often for no other reason than the figures looking neat in one measure system or another? The four-minute mile and the six-metre pole vault are certainly not alone. I don't doubt that 10 seconds in the 100 metres, 20 seconds in the 200 metres, 8 minutes in the steeplechase etc. are marks that have influenced the sports, as was 8 feet (2.44 m) in high jump. I'm also sure that whoever beats 9 metres in long jump will get much bolder headlines than had he "only" reached 8.99. Not to speak of the first person to complete a marathon in 2 hours. We could add 100 metres in javelin, of course, only that event has seen so many rule changes that we hardly even know what the world record is anymore :) In other sports, there's things like the maximum 600 in 10 m Air Rifle, which was broken not long ago by Tevarit Majchacheeap, that's certainly a landmark, too. Well, just an idea. I guess there are lots and lots of examples, and it could be worthy of a nice little article. The hard thing might be to keep it NPOV and referenced, but it should be possible. What do you say? -- Jao 13:37, 13 September 2005 (UTC)

Soldier photo
[edit]I think you may be asking for trouble with your use of the photo of a Marine on the Soldier page. Most Marines take offense to being called "soldiers", and chances are there are a few on Wikipedia that will revert it, vandalize it, start an argument about it, or some such thing.
If you're going for a US military photo, I'd recommend using one of an Army soldier. There are tons of them out there.
I'm going to see if I can find some more pics this weekend that would be more representative of the history of soldiering, but I just wanted to give you a heads-up about the faux pas. Have a good one. Kafziel 17:55, 23 September 2005 (UTC)

hurricane categorization
[edit]I noticed you've been categorizing hurricanes according to regional history. This is...a very good thing.
- Could you add guidelines for regional categorization to Wikipedia:WikiProject_Tropical_Cyclones?
- Are you adding them to all hurricane articles? If so, how do you find a list of hurricane articles? All of the hurricane categories include disambiguations as well (in fact Category:Pacific hurricanes is mostly disambiguations). But "what links here" for Template:Infobox_hurricane and Template:Infobox_hurricane_needed should give a list I guess.
- How do you know when to use history (Category:History of Puerto Rico) versus non-history (Category:Guadeloupe) categories?

Battleboxes
[edit]Strikes me as a rather bad idea, actually, per the whole "a battlebox is not compulsory" thing.
On a more practical level, I think it would be easier to add a section to the list of wanted articles (titled "Battlebox needed" or something similar) and list the articles which are missing a battlebox (but have enough information to write a meaningful one) there, since the project pages will usually get more attention than obscure battle articles.
(The essential difference between us and the Cyclones project really boils down to the number of articles. They have only a few hundred potential articles on storms/hurricanes; we have 2000+ existing battle articles, and thousands more waiting to be written :-) Certainly a "Needs battlebox" category would include most of the articles in Category:Battle stubs; the resulting size would make it rather useless for any real work.) Florida Folklife formatting
[edit]Darwinek, can you help clarify a formatting question for me? Go to Peggy Bulger, who wrote about Stetson Kennedy. - Here is buried
- An decent and honest man
- God fearing (something)
- Righteous (something
- (something)
- Close to the broken hearted
- (something)
- A helpful hand (something) to the poor
- (more stuff I can't make out)
- If you could get a better picture, larger and less blurry, it would help. Maybe GOP2 can pick out some other stuff. Jayjg (talk) 17:19, 9 November 2005 (UTC)
"Victims" of Nat Turner rebellion
[edit]I agree. But some would argue the page may not necessarily be racist, but, yes, it certainly is lopsided. I think some brief, explanatory introduction of what the rebellion is would be helpful. And if the names of the innocent blacks who were killed/brutalized in the fits of retribution that followed are available, then they certainly should be included. Even the names of those insurrectionists/freedom fighters who later were executed should be included -- and, perhaps, the word "victims" changed to something less value laden. ("Casualties"?) After all, many of these whites and their families thrived/prospered by victimizing, exploiting and degrading blacks. Slaves certainly also were "victims". And even those insurrectionists who perished because they felt compelled to take matters into their own hands because they could/would no longer tolerate bondage or the dehumanization of their kin as human chattel -- were they no less "victims"?deeceevoice 19:01, 3 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit]Hi Darwinek, forgive the random question, but you're the community expert I've had the most contact with. I need to ask an admin some questions about how to edit a legally controversial article, but I need to keep that discussion offline since the questions I raise are potentially defamatory (as is the current version) among other ethical considerations. Football
[edit]Thanks. It was great news - I've been waiting for it for 16 years. In 1989 we only needed a draw, at home, to qualify...and we lost. Sixteen years before that we were this close as well, in 1973. The play-off was in Haiti - TT scored 5 goals and lost 2-1 (iirc)...FIFA banned the ref after, but the result stands. Since 1989 they have not had a really good shot, and after they didn't beat Bahrain at home on Saturday I was a little worried about this game. It feels great. Guettarda 19:27, 16 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit]Thanks for the award and wishes. I congratulate you for all the hard work you put in and for making my articles better. I have a question maybe you can answer. If you take a look at Death Valley National Park, it states that the nearest city is Shoshone. Shoshone has about 52 people-definitely not a city. Once I changed the template to "town" on a similar page and it was changed back to city. This doesn't look very good to a person viewing the encyclopedia for the first time. Sorry about the sloppy link, had to break it to fit the edit box. You may already know of it. American Revolution reply
[edit]Hello. I just want to ask you a question, cause you're an expert. Do you think Category:American Revolution people should be renamed to "American Revolutionary War people" ? - Darwinek 15:41, 30 December 2005 (UTC)
- I am certainly no expert on all of the arcane decisions made by the Wikipedia maintenance people. However, I seem to recall that Wikipedia differentiates between the American Revolution and the American Revolutionary War; the latter topic is considered a subset of the former, possibly including the political and social issues. I have limited myself on Wikipedia to American Civil War topics and fortunately we do not have a similar arbitrary division for that era or I might get really confused. Photo's
[edit]I have never seen a storm like that. It must be really cold. The winter picture's convey that, but they are good. Here are some of the images I uploaded from USF&W. They are really some of the better ones but, I have not checked that many yet. The Attwater's Prairie Chicken is on the endangered species list. I added it to the Attwater's Prairie Chicken article because it didn't have a photo. I have that in mind when I search for photo's because articles are much better with them. All the site's images are PD. Not in Texas now, going back in April. [2] [3] [4] [5] [6]-----Dakota ~ ε 20:13, 30 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit]Thank you for your vote for me in the council election. I really appreciate it. I entered my opinion re: Template:PD-USGov-LOC. I already knew that LoC images are not always public domain. They do have a site containing some interesting material elsewhere that I ran across previously that is USGOV and PD stated but I can't find it again. I am waiting for a email ok for a photographer's permisssion to use a photo for my article that woefully needs it. Happy new year to you.--Dakota ~ ε 18:03, 31 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit]Thanks for keeping an eye on my efforts here - I'm emerging from the newbie stage, but still need a guiding hand with new articles... Can I ask why cat:Botswana was taken off this article? Library of Congress images
[edit]I see that you have redirected Template:PD-USGov-LOC to Template:PD-US-LOC. Of course you realize the intended difference in use, and that many images appropriate for the one will not be appropriate for the other. I see though that most images are in fact filed appropriately, but that a handful of pre-1923 images will have to be recategorized. Additionally, I would strongly suggest that Category:Library of Congress images should be replaced (I think it could fairly be speedied as its accompanying template has been deleted) with Category:Library of Congress-verified public domain images, as these are not actually works of the U.S. government, and also that this category should not be a part of Category:United States government images, but instead placed in Category:Images in the public domain in the United States. What's your thought on this?--Pharos 01:41, 10 January 2006 (UTC)
- Images that are PD for some other reason (e.g. because they're old) and just happen to be downloaded from the Library of Congress website would just be treated like any other images, and be tagged according to their original source. Of course we should also mention in the summary where they're downloaded from, but as this has no bearing on their copyright status, there's no need for a separate image tag (which is why the old tag was TfD'd). If this scheme is OK with you, I'll just go through and convert everything on your say-so.--Pharos 03:21, 11 January 2006 (UTC)

"Stubmaster"? :)
[edit]Hi Darwinek! Parks are regarded as geo-stubs. Struct-stub is only used for buildings and similar architectural or engineering features like masts and bridges. Zoos are also usually marked with geo-stub. One exception is amusement parks and specific amusement park rides (like giant roller coasters). These have their own stub type (ride-stub). FPC
[edit]I like the photos looking down the river and the path, as well as the photos of the street cars during the blizzard. Your hardest part will be getting the images sharpened. If you have larger, less compressed versions of the files, I would start by uploading those. If you have Photoshop, you can try Smart Sharpen or Unsharp Mask, then downsize the image. If you get them sharpened, and mess around with the color/contrast to give the images some "vibrance" (whatever that means), they could have a chance. As Fir0002 suggested to me, however, I would wait until the FPC page is no longer loaded with the ultra-high-resolution images that it currently has. — 0918BRIAN • 2006-01-14 23:45
Re: Oceania-bio-stub
[edit]Hi Darwinek - I think it might have been suggested before... problem is with separate categories already for Australia-bio-stub, NZ-bio-stub, and Fiji-bio-stub, I don't know how many other Oceania-bio-stubs there would be. Might be worth suggestion, though. Grutness...wha?
- D'oh! Forget all that - there is already an Oceania-bio-stub - newly created, too! It must have been suggested recently while I was taking a break from stub-sorting. Grutness...wha? 00:01, 17 January 2006 (UTC)

- Had a problem with auto-afd. Typed delete into the first box and boom I was straight back to the page
and the link was red. No second step. When I attempted to finish it manually it looked as though an extra page had formed because at articles entry remained red but the entry was present on the articles for deletion page as it should be. Make me think there might an extra page which we don't need. I have used auto-afd quite a few times before with no problems. No one was in and I couldn't connect to IRC. On a hunch I cleared my browser and it solved the problem. It could be a bug. Thanks for the reply, and have a good weekend.--Dakota ~ ε 14:50, 21 January 2006 (UTC)

The lost islands of the Maldives...
[edit]Hmm, I know I saw the listing on CFD but I can't find it in any of the archived logs so I suspect it was a speedy rename. Have you tried Category:Uninhabited islands of the Maldives? With speedy renames, all the articles are edited to place them in the renamed category and the old category is deleted. The software doesn't allow moves of categories at the moment. --Syrthiss 12:57, 1 February 2006 (UTC)
- Bleh. Do you happen to remember what one or two of them were? Whoever emptied the old category should have put them in the new category. I know the cat was empty if I was the one who deleted it, but I wasn't the one who emptied it. If we have the name of at least one of the ones who didnt get moved correctly we can maybe track them down from that person's contributions list. --Syrthiss 13:15, 1 February 2006 (UTC)
- Even more bleh. I checked a couple that are listed in the infobox as uninhabited, thinking I had found a way to re-find them but the ones I checked hadn't been touched since October of last year. I'll try to look at NekoDaemon's contributions and see if the bot moved them. --Syrthiss 13:43, 1 February 2006 (UTC)
- NekoDaemon only moved those three that we see there currently, back on Jan 20th per your request. I don't know why it would have only done three articles and stopped. I am running a scan on the database dump from back in December to find the articles in the category...and it just finished, after finding only two articles. --Syrthiss 13:56, 1 February 2006 (UTC)
- GOT THEM. They were categorized through the template, not through a direct category text...so each one of those pages needs to be touched to get it to re-categorize I believe. I'll work on that. --Syrthiss 14:04, 1 February 2006 (UTC)
- Just the follow up: the ones that still had the template were touched so they recategorized. As a side note User:Adrian Buehlmann had updated the template and moved the <noincludes> so while the tempate itself was in the category, the articles weren't. There were many in that category that had been changed into redirects to the articles on the atolls that contain them, and a bunch of others that had been deleted...but I still have the database dump so if you want the full list I can send you the text file. Cheers. --Syrthiss 15:56, 1 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit]Today three weeks have passed since I was granted access to the administrator toolbox. During this time I have made use of it in the following way:
- Protections and unprotections: 1
- Blocks and unblocks: 4
- Deletions and restorations: 69
- Rollbacks: 246
I've found that the rollback tool is much more useful than I'd thought for vandalism patrol. In fact it makes that task so easy that I've been doing it more than before. On the other hand I've been surprised by how little the blocking tool is needed. Having done a significant amount of vandalism patrol I have still only blocked one solitary vandal. The great majority of addresses which send out a vandal edit do so only once. Those who do it more often usually stop after a warning or two. Only rarely is a block actually needed and in those cases someone usually beats me to it.
As a side note I haven't retired from writing articles either. I'm still hoping to bring Freyr up to featured status but even though I've already performed more edits on it than on Hrafnkels saga back in the day, a lot of work remains to be done. Community expectations for featured articles have gone up and so have my own ambitions. I'm currently waiting for a couple of books I ordered to arrive and then I may be able to make the final push.
I'm trying my best to live up to the trust you showed in me by supporting my RFA. If ever you feel uncertain whether I'm using the admin tools in the best interests of the project, let me know. I am at any time willing to relinquish the mop and reapply for it to address concerns people have and ensure that I'm not using the admin tools without being trusted to do so. Another Esperanzial note...
[edit]Hi again Esperanzians! Well, since our last frolic in the realms of news, the Advisory Council has met twice more (see WP:ESP/ACM2 and WP:ESP/ACM3). As a result, the charter has been ammended twice (see here for details) and all of the shortcuts have been standardised (see the summary for more details). Also of note is the Valentines ball that will take place in the Esperanza IRC channel on the 14th of February (tomorrow). It will start at 6pm UTC and go on until everyone's had enough! I hope to see you all there! Also, the spamlist has been dissolved - all Esperanzians will now recieve this update "newsletter".
The other major notice I need to tell you about is the upcoming Esperanza Advisory Council Elections. These will take place from 12:00 UTC on February 20th to 11:59 UTC on February 27th. The official handing-over will take place the following day. Candidates are able to volunteer any time before the 20th, so long as they are already listed on the members list. Anyone currently listed on the memberlist can vote. In a change since last time, if you have already been a member of the leadership, you may run again. Due to the neutrality precident, I will not vote for anyone.
Yours, as ever, Esperanzially,

[edit]Thanks for your vote My request for adminship passed with a final result of 78/2/0. Hopefully I will live up to everyone's expectations. Please ask if I can ever help out with anything in the future.Martyman - 09:37, 20 February 2006 (UTC) |
My RFA
[edit]Thank you for supporting me in my successful RFA. The admin tools will definitely be handy for dealing with vandalism more swiftly. Please drop a note on my talk page, should you have questions about any of my actions. --Aude (talk | contribs) 01:08, 23 February 2006 (UTC)
Islam
RfA thanks
[edit]Thank you for voting on my RfA, it passed with a final tally of 68/0/0 so I'm now an administrator. If there's anything I can do to help, you feel I've done something wrong, or there's just something you want to tell, don't hesitate to use my talk page. Thanks. - Bobet 10:35, 1 March 2006 (UTC)
Thank you!
[edit]Thank you! Hi Darwinek/Archive1, thank you for your support in my Rfa! It passed with a final tally of 86/0/0. If you need help or just want to talk let me know! Again, thank you! – Dakota ~ ° 22:07, 3 March 2006 (UTC) |
Hello Darwinek
[edit]Hello Darwinek,
I have been editing the errors on the African American fraternity and sorority wikipedia pages for a few weeks now.
Recently, my IP number was blocked from making anymore changes to these websites. You blocked my IP number which prevents me from making anymore changes. My IP was blocked becasue I kept removing numerous errors on African American fraternity/sorority wikipedia pages.
You must realize that although numerous African American fraternity/sorority websites on the internet list 'famous' members, they may not real be members of those organizations.
I have studied African American fraternities and sororities for about a decade now and I know that there are many errors within the histories of these organizations.
Errors occur because a famous person may receive an award from the fraternity or sorority and then individuals may conclude that they are members.
In other cases, word-of-mouth or confusion between people with the same name may be the reason for the error.
I REMOVED numerous names on African American fraternity/sorority wikipedia pages which include:
Debbie Allen and Ida B. Wells on the Delta Sigma Theta wikipedia page
Morris Chestnut, Quincy Jones, Rick James on the Phi Beta Sigma wikipedia page
Earl Monroe, Guion Bluford, Hank Aaron on the Omega Psi Phi wikipedia page
Loretta Devine on the Sigma Gamma Rho wikipedia page (she is really a member of another sorority)
Gwendolyn Brooks, Jasmine Guy, on the Zeta Phi Beta wikipedia page
Bill Jefferson, Mayor Walter E. Washington on the Alpha Phi Alpha wikipedia page
Ron Brown on the Kappa Alpha Psi wikipedia page (he was in another fraternity http://www.sigep.org/about/alumni_government.asp)
The names above were just a few of the names that I removed.
Mayor Walter E. Washington was not an alpha, he is often confused with the former president of Alpha Phi Alpha and Alcorn State University whom was also named Walter Washington.
The 1st Black astronaut in space Guion S. Bluford is not a member of Omega Psi Phi. He is often confused with the 1st Black person to 'become' an astronaut Robert H. Lawrence whom was a member of Omega Psi Phi.
Maxine Waters is definitely not a member of Delta Sigma Theta. If you do a google search using 'Maxine Waters delta sigma theta' only two websites will appear. If she was a Delta her name and picture would appear on hundreds of Delta Sigma Theta websites. Also, you can verify that she is not a member by contacting the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority in Washington D.C. at www.deltasigmatheta.org
Ida B. Wells is not a member of Delta Sigma Theta. I read their history book and she was very close to Delta, but she was definitely not a member.
Rick James who sung 'SuperFreak' was not a member of Phi BEta Sigma. He is often confused with the Rick James from the popular show during the '80 named 'Star Search'.
Morris Chestnut is not a member of Phi Beta Sigma. Although his name appears on about 75 Phi Beta Sigma websites, he is definitely not a member of Phi Beta Sigma. And you can verify this by contacting Phi Beta Sigma through their official website www.pbs1914.org.
Also, you may look at their "official" notable members list. If he was a member he would have been listed on the national Phi Beta Sigma website and he is not: http://www.pbs1914.org/sigmatoday/notablesigmaentertainment.asp
Or you may chat with members of Phi Beta Sigma at http://www.greekchat.com/gcforums/showthread.php?s=e82a1c4d5b17db99c48317fa63e41800&threadid=36400&highlight=morris
Gwendolyn Brooks is not a Zeta. She is not mentioned as a member anywhere in their history book as a member. Also, I spoke with a member of Zeta whom confirmed that she was not a Zeta.
I am well read in African American fraternity and sorority history. So if an 'edit'comes from my IP number you can consider it reliable. (laugh)
You do a good job with creating many pages for wikipedia, but I would recommend only using the famous members lists from the 'official' websites of these organizations, which are listed below:
Phi Beta Sigma http://www.pbs1914.org/sigmatoday/notablesigmas.asp
Alpha Phi Alpha http://www.alphaphialpha.net/alpha/legacy/alumni.html
Zeta Phi Beta http://www.zphib1920.org/heritage/notable_zetas.html
Delta Sigma Theta http://www.deltasigmatheta.org/inside.php?id=0305AH4N
Omega Psi Phi http://www.omega2dc4.org/images/2nd%20District%20Brochure%20page%203.jpg
Kappa Alpha Psi http://www.kappaalphapsi1911.com/

Hello Darwinek
[edit]The message above (IP# 131.96.18.139) was written by me - jsmith212, before I created an account.
Also, I am the same person with the IP number 66.56.94.89 that you blocked yesterday.
If you want to reply to me, only send messages to jsmith212. If you send or SENT messages to IP# 131.96.18.139, I will not receive them because it was on a public computer not my home computer.
You may contact Phi Beta Sigma (technology@pbs1914.org) and tell them that you are an administrator for wikipedia. You can ask them if Morris Chestnut is a Sigma and they will tell you although his name appears on many websites, he is not a member of Phi Beta Sigma.
You can contact all the other organizations for verification of the numerous errors on African American fraternity/sorority wikipedia pages.
Or you can just use the official national websites which I mentioned above as reliable references.

Russian cities & towns
[edit]Ouch! That's what I get for not reading the rules beforehand. No need to bother with CfD, though, I'll take care of them myself (there is still plenty of cities/towns to recategorize anyway). Teszinsko a Śląsk Cieszyński, sprawy cieszyńskie, Archduke Friedrich

[edit]Arnost Lustig new article. I listed it with pages needing translation and left the author a note. I know just a very little about the person but not the language. If you wouldn't care to take a look at it. Thanks.--Dakota ~ ° 19:01, 6 March 2006 (UTC)
Input request
[edit]Hi! Once again I request your input. But this time in the field of geography. I have made the (quite long) list of villages in Norway, and thought about splitting it into 18 subpages, one for each county except Oslo. Maybe using tables, I thought. I have made a draft here. Please have a look and and tell me if you like the table, or any other ideas you might have. The project is perhaps a bit ambitious, but we'll see. Punkmorten 20:57, 6 March 2006 (UTC)
I have now made a proposal B, which I like better. Punkmorten 22:02, 6 March 2006 (UTC)
Re: Lochs/Lakes
[edit]Hi Darwinek, thanks for your question. Lochs in scotland ("Loughs" in Ireland) generally fall into two categories - freshwater and saltwater. A lake, by definition is an inland body of water surrounded by land, and the freshwater lochs are indeed lakes. The saltwater lochs are open to the sea and are therefore not lakes. This is often confusing to non Scots, but the main Loch article explains it better than I do :-) Although Cat:Lakes of Scotland contains only a few entries, it is an important subset of Cat:Lochs of Scotland and should be kept separate I think. I hope that helps. BTW, thanks for your vote on my RfA, and may the snows clear up soon. --Cactus.man ✍ 09:55, 11 March 2006 (UTC)

Battle of Lwów (1939)
[edit]Czołem, Darwinku! Dodałeś prośbę o źródła do artykułu o bitwie o Lwów w 1939.

[edit]Soviet cities
[edit]There are quite a few, actually. The ones I can think right away are Komsomolsk in Ivanovo Oblast (note it is different from Komsomolsk-on-Amur, which is in Amur Oblast), Magnitogorsk, Boksitogorsk, Novokuznetsk, and Krasnouralsk.
Towns like Asbest, Komsomolsk-on-Amur, Pervouralsk were founded a lot earlier, but they became major industrial centers (and, as a result, were granted town status) in the 1930s.
Let me know if this is not enough; I'll look up more for you.—Ëzhiki (ërinacëus amurënsis) 16:36, 19 March 2006 (UTC)

:) Zresztóm tukej i tu je to też mianowane "Gorolski", podziwej sie: "Piękno i niepowtarzalność „gorolskiej“ Ziemi Jabłonkowskiej podkreśla również dzisiaj często używana i lubiana gwara." :) Zdravim, bywej zdrów D_T_G (PL) 10:37, 1 April 2006 (UTC) P.S. Costa Rica
[edit]No, I am from the UK. I just happened to fix up the Chira Island article which someone added and when I wikified it it was then full of redlinks even for things that I really expected to exist so I made them myself, and well continuing that process it happened repeatedly, to the point I am well past 100 articles made in the region now. Almost all are stubs of course, but I'm sure that can be fixed in time. -- Sfnhltb 14:49, 6 April 2006 (UTC)

Uzbekistan
[edit]I think it makes perfect sense, and similar distinction is made in Russia as well ("русские" for nationality and "россияне" for the citizens of the nation). It is important to remember, however, that I am no expert in Uzbek affairs. Argentine related articles
[edit]Hi there! I saw you create an Argentina related stub now and then. I would like to ask you to add such newly created articles to the Argentina related notice board's 'new pages' section, so we can attack it right away. Thank you, and good wiking! Mariano(t/c) 11:16, 11 April 2006 (UTC)
- Yeap, Polish lastname. I also have a second one, but Spanish (that's Argentina!) Sadly I don't know a word of Polish. I'm currently living in Slovenia, so I know one slavic language, but it's not that similar to Polish. I agree there are lots of Argentine geography topics missing; I've done a couple, but I'm currently working more on Argentine history. If you have an idea of which really important articles of geography are missing, ideas are always welcome! What's more, if the Spanish article already exists (or Italian, Portuguese, Slovene, Croatian), I can quickly translate them into English. See ya! Mariano(t/c) 14:01, 11 April 2006 (UTC)
- Please, chech the articles Puelo-Fagnano-Buenos Aires articles, because I had some doubts regarding some technical words (mainly I didn't know how to say that a lake 'drains' or 'losses the excendent of water' through a river or so). Do you happen to have a list of 'most important rivers' or'most important geographical bodies' for Argentina? I could work on it if I had it, but I would like to start with the 'important ones' and not with just streams or hills. Mariano(t/c) 19:05, 11 April 2006 (UTC)
- I'm not much into minimalistic stubs, so give me a couple of days and I'll do something less shameful with the Lake San Martin/O'Higgins, with some comment on the two Libertadores after which its named. BTW: if your Czech atlas has lakes drwan as cows, I suggest you change it for a Slovakian one! ;o) Take care, Mariano(t/c) 10:33, 12 April 2006 (UTC)
- Served: O'Higgins/San Martín Lake, Espejo Lake. JIC:I won't be on-line 'til tuesday. Ta ta, Mariano(t/c) 09:31, 14 April 2006 (UTC)
- Revenge!! I saw you created Northern Patagonian Ice Field, so what about the Southern Patagonian Ice Field? Muahaha, Nau aj am zi uan givin ju vork! :oP Happy easter to you too. Mariano(t/c) 10:09, 14 April 2006 (UTC)

Co byś powiedzioł na taki kształt?:
Until 1918 it was called Saska Kępa (local dialect: Sasko Kympa, German: Sachsenberg) and was a suburb of the town of Cieszyn (German: Teschen) in the Duchy of Cieszyn, within Cieszyn Silesia in Austria-Hungary. Following the fall of the dual monarchy, the Polish and Czechoslovak local councils agreed on a partition of the area running along ethnic lines, however that treatment wasn't fully accepted by goverment of Prague. In 1919, with Poland fighting on its eastern frontiers, Czechoslovakia (fighting in Slovakia against Red Hungarian Army), driven chiefly by economic aims and accordingly with purpose from 31.10.1918 to gover all area of Duchy of Cieszyn and after French permission to annex all past Bohemia Crown lands, invaded the area up to the Olza river (which included the suburb), later agreeing to hold a plebiscite. However, in 1920, with Poland engaged in the Polish-Soviet war - Czechoslovakia ally, Czechoslovakia annexed the area. This action was formalized at the Treaty of Versailles, thus leaving a sizeable Polish minority on the Czech side. In 1938, following the Munich agreement which allowed Germany to annex the Sudetenland, Poland coerced Czechoslovakia to surrender Český Těšín, by issuing an ultimatum to that effect September 30, which was accepted by Czechoslovakia on the first of October. Following negotiations with Czech authorities, who were given an additional 24 hours to evacuate the area, Polish troops and authorities entered it on October 2, 1938, and the territory was annexed to Poland. After the German invasion of Poland, in 1939, the entire territory was annexed by Germany. During the World War II it was a part of Germany. The area was divided along the previous 1920 border again in 1945, and the Communist Government of Poland returned the disputed area to Czechoslovakia. Before the war there was a sizeable Jewish minority in the town, about 1500 in Cieszyn and 1300 in Český Těšín [15]. Almost all of them were killed by Nazis in the concentration camps. Today only one synagogue is still standing in the town (today, it is a Polish cultural centre). Jewish cemetery in Český Těšín is abandoned (see the photos below). Even more sizeable German community fled to Germany after the war. There are no Jewish and German communities in the town today. |
Czesi chcieli też by wojska Ententy zapewniły im kontrolę nad Księstwem. W styczniu 1919 roku Ententa uznała tymczasowo prawa Czech do granic historycznych i armia czeska zaatakowała Bogumin, Karwinę i Jabłonków (23.01.1919), a następnie pokonała oddziały polskie w trzydniowej bitwie pod Skoczowem. Dalsze działania przerwało zawieszenie broni (1.02.1919). 3 lutego Benesz i Roman Dmowski zawarli w Paryżu ugodę, wiele której konflikt miała zbadać Komisja Międzysojusznicza (Anglia, Francja, Włochy).
Konsekwencje rozdarcia spójnego monolitu ówczesnego Śląska Cieszyńskiego pociągnęło za sobą obopólną i szeroko rozumianą separację (dotyczyło to rodzin, przyjaciół, znajomych, stowarzyszeń, związków, instytucji, organizacji, itp.), a więc podstawowe elementy tworzące pełnowartościowe społeczeństwo.
Czymu to wszysko?
- Będzie to poprawione, rozszerzone i uzupełnione. No i jest jeszcze Wikipedia. To musi zaowocować jakimiś publikacjami książkowymi. Coraz bardziej chodzi mi to po głowie...

[edit]"Official flag", for the last 25 years. Doesn't represent every Iranian thats ever lived in the 2500 years of the country. That was my point. Why not discuss it first? -- - K a s h Talk | email 15:38, 22 April 2006 (UTC)
On the Jews and Their Lies
[edit]Dear Darwinek: Yes, there is a reason for the author's name in the title. Several editors are concerned that those who see the title would think we're saying the Jews lie rather than the author. The discussion is in the talk page archive and a note on it on the current talk page. Please move the article back. Thanks! --CTSWyneken 19:56, 22 April 2006 (UTC)

River names
[edit]Hi... I notice you've been changing a few river names from "River X" to "X River". This is a complicated issue because different strands of English name rivers in different ways. The British/Irish English convention is (usually, there are always exceptions) to talk about "River X", whereas "X River" is the usual form in American and Australian English (again, there are exceptions). So it would definitely be a mistake (even for an American) to talk about the Thames River flowing through London, or (even for an English person) to talk about the River Hudson flowing through New York. It's not obvious what to do when the river isn't in an English speaking country, but geographical promixity means that when talking about rivers in Europe or Africa there's a tendency to use the "River X" form, and when talking about rivers in South America there's a tendency to use the American form. There's a separate issue about some Spanish rivers, where quite often in English we use the Spanish name "Rio X". I haven't done any changing back, because there may have been discussion about this issue somewhere I haven't spotted. But in general I'd suggest it's not a good thing to do unless you are very confident about typical usage. The person who started the article may well have good reasons for choosing the format they did. seglea 22:17, 23 April 2006 (UTC)
Translation complete
[edit]Nickerie River has been translated by Andries & proofed by myself. Suriname River has just been translated by me as requested - still needs proofing. There are a lot of redlinks, in fullness of time I'll look & see which of those are worth doing, unless you have specific requests. Re geo-stubs
[edit]I'm always getting Suriname wrong! (ISTR it used to be spelt that way in English at one time). As to CAR/CentralAfricanRepublic, that can be debated when I propose the new split (which will be once I finish the current tally - hopefully by Monday or Tuesday).
