Greetings from the League of Copyeditors. Your name is listed on our members page, but we are unsure how many of the people listed there are still active contributors to the League's activities. If you are still interested in participating in the work of the League, please follow the instructions at the members page to add your name to the active members list. Once you have done that, you might want to familiarise yourself with the new requests system, which has replaced the old /proofreading subpage. As the old system is now deprecated, the main efforts of the League should be to clear the substantial backlog which still exists there.
The League's services are in as high demand as ever, as evinced by the increasing backlog on our requests pages, both old and new. While FA and GA reviewers regularly praise the League's contributions to reviewed articles, we remain perennially understaffed. Fulfilling requests to polish the prose of Wikipedia's highest-profile articles is a way that editors can make a very noticeable difference to the appearance of the encyclopedia. On behalf of the League, if you do consider yourself to have left, I hope you will consider rejoining; if you consider yourself inactive, I hope you will consider returning to respond to just one request per week, or as many as you can manage. Merry Christmas and happy editing, The League of Copyeditors.

Thanks for the welcome, can you help me if I get stuck? --Kickstartme 08:50, 7 August 2007 (UTC)

Thank you for the advice and the welcome. I will try to get less possesive about Sinhala Slang, at the moment I am very skeptic about someone messing with it and making a bad name of it. The funny thing is that, I requestd it to be semi-protected against vandalism and now even I cannot edit it since I am a newcomer. (for few days) This would teach me to let the article go,... and let it grow. Wondering if you can help me to protect the article from any malicious act, for the next three days, till I can edit it again :) Ritigala Jayasena 18:03, 9 August 2007 (UTC)

Request for Some Help

Hey again. I just got finished writing my first page. After writing the page, I realized a mistake that I had made with the title of the page. I gave the article the title "Evangelical christian academy" when it should have been "Evangelical Christian Academy". Since I only recently setup my Wikipedia account I can't change the title. Can you make this change for me? The article is here Thanks! JLaddJr 17:45, 7 August 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the help again!

Thank you for stepping in!

Obviously you read what is going on so you must agree with me right? This particular editor has made an error. Am I correct? How can the article be rewritten so it's acceptable? Intolerancerecords 08:46, 7 August 2007 (UTC)

Actually, I didn't, and seeing what's going on, I have no intention of stepping into the actual article being discussed. All I saw were your comments on your fellow editor's talk page, and I just wanted to remind you to keep a cool head when speaking to those fellow editors. Comments like "are you retarded" add no meaningful content and only serve to make everyone agitated. --Darkwind (talk) 08:50, 7 August 2007 (UTC)

Personal Attack?

What I wrote did not constitute as a personal attack. Did you read the guidlines? If you did, you'd know that accusing someone without justification of making personal attacks is also considered a form of personal attack. Which pot is calling which kettle black my wiki buddy? Intolerancerecords 08:49, 7 August 2007 (UTC)

See my reply above. --Darkwind (talk) 08:50, 7 August 2007 (UTC)

Alright "Noob"????

I do not appreciate the personal bashing. My mom is sick and all I can do is listen to Lynyrd Skynyrd. They help me get through the day. I know how it is to love with my mother. When they finally pass on it is hard. All those lonely nights in the basement have wore on me. Please forgive me. I'm sorry, I don't really know how to use the internets. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 166.82.192.241 (talkcontribs) 10:09, August 7, 2007 (UTC).

You've left this comment for the wrong user. I didn't say anything about that band on your talk page. The person who did added their comment above mine and didn't sign it. I've fixed that for you. --Darkwind (talk) 18:56, 7 August 2007 (UTC)

Sorry man. I am sad that I hurt you. Love you when your mad. Seth Bullard —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 166.82.192.241 (talkcontribs) 20:27, August 7, 2007 (CDT).

We want to stay within guidelines...

Greetings and thank you for all your efforts!

I've spent quite some time looking thru help files that have helped immeasurably. However, I'm not sure how to set up two items:

1.How do you move the table of contents box to a different area of the page? I don't see it in the html...

2.How do I properly set up a categories box at the bottom of the article? I listed categories that are appropriate but I notice that all pages have a standard blue box at the bottom with categories inside...

Thanks again Hillsboroughartscouncil 19:34, 7 August 2007 (UTC)

What do you think so far?

Does it conform to Wikipedia style? Do you have any suggestions? What is the best way to get other editors involved? --Kickstartme 22:22, 7 August 2007 (UTC)

Just as a note, this guy was a sock of Grumpyrob; he wasn't allowed to use his version of the article on Plastic pressure pipe systems, so he recreated the same article under the Industrial title instead. MSJapan 16:06, 8 August 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for your quick response!

We greatly appreciate your help... In regards to the notability issue we've added legal info about the Non-profit organization, town and state agency endorsements, a list of references to online published materials. I trust this will be more than sufficent... if not let us know...

Oh ... one more technical question... I'm having a problem inserting the 'nofollow' tag for external links... could you copy me a sample?

Thanks again for your help... you folks are great! Hillsboroughartscouncil 22:32, 7 August 2007 (UTC)

Not worthy of Wikipedia

Thank you once again... In regards to the Notability issue:

It appears that you placed the notability banner on the page... 19:57, 7 August 2007 (hist) (diff) m Hillsborough Arts Council (added notability tag)

You also moved the page to another area that can’t be found… 19:58, 7 August 2007 (hist) (diff) m Hillsborough Arts Council (moved Hillsborough arts council to Hillsborough Arts Council:

We have now edited the page extensively adding numerous links and references to deal with the Notability issue.

However you state “I'm not going to make any kind of final judgment call as to whether what you've included is completely sufficient I don't think I really have the experience in that depth of Wikipedia policy.”

I'm a bit mystified that you felt qualified to

  • Tag the page as having a Notability issue,
  • Move the page
  • Add a Wikipedia articles with topics of unclear importance tag to the categories

... but you now state that you don't have the experience to judge it...

interesting...

Well… I gave it my best…

Respectfully Hillsboroughartscouncil 01:06, 8 August 2007 (UTC)

Appreciate the kindness

I appreciate both the civility and your kindness in explaining these nuances.

I really was mystified and was trying not to sound confrontational.

I wouldn't feel comfortable removing the template as the edits are mine. I'm not a member of the Hillsborough Arts Council but I volunteered some time to help them with website and other issues... hence my idea to put some info up on Wikipedia.

I guess I'll just wait and see what happens, or ask if anyone else feels qualified to edit the site and remove the notability banner.

Once again thanks so much for the clarification respectfully Hillsboroughartscouncil 01:35, 8 August 2007 (UTC)

Please leave me alone

I'm sick and tired of being banned. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.94.120.34 (talkcontribs) 07:57, August 11, 2007 (CDT)

My note to you didn't say anything about being banned. It just said "please don't hold extended discourse in an edit summary." Based on your IP's warning history, though, I'm not inclined to be particularly sympathetic. --Darkwind (talk) 19:35, 11 August 2007 (UTC)

How about no?

Okay? Soon, I'll get a modem that changes my IP every time I log in. I'm sick of the "you have new messages" thing that won't go away. I'm not vandalizing your page. I'm eventually going to be banned again so I'm trying to fix wrong info on some pages. My anger comes from Jonny2x4 who keeps editing stuff with speculation. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 24.94.120.34 (talkcontribs) between 14:49 and 14:58 in several edits, August 11, 2007 (CDT).

I know you're not vandalizing my page, I'm just moving the discussion to the bottom so it stays in chronological order. Why worry about randomizing your IP, unless you want to feel anonymous? If you really don't want to be tracked, that's fine, but as Wikipedians, we as a community will continue to self-"police" activity by all our users and guests. Just try to keep civility in mind while editing, and you'll be fine. If you're having problems with a particular editor, discuss it on their talk page (in a civil manner) or on the talk page of the article in question. Wikipedia operates by consensus, and if you have a discussion on the article talk page, others interested in that article will generally chime in with their opinions, and that way a consensus can be reached.
The fact that your new messages banner won't go away is because of a known bug with messages left for IP addresses and the MediaWiki software. That's another reason to register for an account, the problem doesn't seem to happen if you're logged in. --Darkwind (talk) 20:22, 11 August 2007 (UTC)

Vandalism?

How was my edit vandalism? It was a valid edit to the Space Jam page about a notable spin-off that did not have its own page. I believe that qualifies as "Trivia" —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 66.108.123.19 (talkcontribs) 21:42, August 13, 2007 (CDT).

You're right. I apologize, but I added the warning to your page in error. Rollback

I have granted rollback rights to your account; the reason for this is that after a review of some of your contributions, I believe you can be trusted to use rollback correctly, and for its intended usage of reverting vandalism, and that you will not abuse it by reverting good-faith edits or to revert-war. For information on rollback, see Wikipedia:New admin school/Rollback and Wikipedia:Rollback feature. If you do not want rollback, just let me know, and I'll remove it. Good luck and thanks. Hi

Re: Hoctor's Ballet: How does it not get a passing mention when it is a feature of the film, Gershwin wrote this long piece for a famous ballerina, and it has a whole page in Jablonski's book? pg. 300-304 Why would you want to limit what is factually accurate and cited references from the internet, especially something as rare as an unheard Gershwin orchestral piece? (And by the way, your citation of this as a song is wrong, it exists as an orchestral piece, not a "song") Ask anyone who knows something about music and they can explain the difference to you.)—Preceding unsigned comment added by Stackedaktor (talkcontribs) 01:39, 25 March 2010 (UTC)

Sure, let me give you some tips on your talk page. --Darkwind (talk) 22:12, 21 March 2010 (UTC)

Thanks! So, may I ask 1 thing? If so, does Wikipedia have User Warnings? I know on other Wikias that they have warnings and they even block or ban people. I am just curious. Oh, and does this place have an IRC channel? Thanks! ZTG —Preceding undated comment added 23:54, 21 March 2010 (UTC).

We do have a fairly regular system for notifying users who break the rules; see WikiProject User Warnings for info on that. As for IRC, the short answer is yes; for the long answer, see the IRC info page. Just keep in mind that the English Wikipedia is a hugely more complex place than most Wikia and other wiki sites, simply because it's so large and so popular. However, there's lots of help on specific topics. You might want to take some time to browse through the Community portal to get a sense of the WP community. --Darkwind (talk) 23:59, 21 March 2010 (UTC)

Okay! And, is it okay if I post a signature using a template page? I have one on the Kingdom Hearts wiki, and I was wondering if I can use it here. Is it okay? ZTG —Preceding undated comment added 00:16, 22 March 2010 (UTC).

In general, you can put whatever you like for your signature as long as it's not huge or obnoxious. It also can't contain any images. See WP:CUSTOMSIG for guidelines. You'll also have noticed that since your signature currently doesn't have the time included, there's a bot following you around timestamping your comments. It's best practice to sign with your name *and* the UTC time. The ~~~~ signature method does this automatically. --Darkwind (talk) 00:20, 22 March 2010 (UTC)

Okay. Now, can I create template pages? I have a "homemade" signature that needs to have a template pagelike thing. Just a branch of my userpage User:ZexionTheGamer 01:07, 23 March 2010 (UTC)

Oh, sorry. I didn't quite get what you'd meant before. Using an actual {{template}} in your signature is forbidden on Wikipedia - see WP:SIG#NT for an explanation of why. Whatever you use has to fit in the signature configuration box in your preferences. --Darkwind (talk) 01:12, 23 March 2010 (UTC)

Would you consider closing this AFD, as references show that this is notable. Okip 02:15, 28 March 2010 (UTC)

Reverted edit?

Can you explain why you reverted my edit to Kohlberg Kravis Roberts? At the very least it is completely unacceptable that you would use a rollback reversion. |► ϋrбanяeneωaℓTALK ◄| 02:15, 29 March 2010 (UTC)

Lupin's AVT flagged your edit because you added [[Media:Example.ogg]] at the top of the page, which is an extremely common "test edit" that is (99.99% of the time) non-useful. Looking at it more closely, I see you were trying to add the {{redirect}} template back in, but my initial impression was of a non-useful edit. I apologize if I caused any confusion or misread the purpose of your edit. --Darkwind (talk) 02:22, 29 March 2010 (UTC)
You need to be more careful with the use of rollback. If there is a questions, simply use undo and explain what it is you are doing. |► ϋrбanяeneωaℓTALK ◄| 13:59, 29 March 2010 (UTC)
I've been using "non-admin rollback" tools for anti-vandalism purposes off and on for several years, and nobody's ever had an issue with any of my reverts until now. I'm sincerely sorry I didn't see the good-faith nature of your edit - but mistakes happen. I don't really appreciate the condescending tone I perceive in your comments here (whether or not you intended it to sound that way, it's how it's coming across), so I suggest we both drop the issue and move on. --Darkwind (talk) 14:19, 29 March 2010 (UTC)

I think what you're missing here is the definition of notability. See my comments on the article talk page. --Darkwind (talk) 13:00, 1 April 2010 (UTC)

Horner

I see the page you cited for the scientist's quote on Google Books, but I don't see Horner's larger argument re: malaria and his specifically blaming EDF, which the article says he does. I think the article should cite more pages from his book if in fact he makes the argument elsewhere. RafaelRGarcia (talk) 17:44, 4 April 2010 (UTC)

Page 53 alludes to such a larger argument:
"Being an environmentalist, however, not only means never having to say you're sorry (those millions of dead Africans killed by malaria when DDT was taken away from them might deserve an apology), it means never having to prioritize."
I have a feeling he never says the argument straight out, based on what I can glean from searching in the Google Books interface. Either way, I haven't really verified the whole claim, but it was easy to verify the superficial cause for citation (the quote), which is why I put the source back in. If you think it really doesn't support the whole claim that it's being cited for, do feel free to take it back out. --Darkwind (talk) 18:13, 4 April 2010 (UTC)
Reworded. The article was using very strong wording, like genocide. If Horner didn't even say that, then whoever inserted the material originally was editorializing. RafaelRGarcia (talk) 21:43, 4 April 2010 (UTC)

Third Opinion on Axel Erlandson

Hi Darkwind I thought come and thank you for your opinion. I have made a suggested sentence change with refs. I didn't change it myself because if I did so, Griseum would say I had a COI and people would focus on that rather than on the content, link to sentence. Also to let you know that there are now other editors on the talk page voicing the same arguments as Griseum. One of them suggest going to Dispute resolution, which I will do in a couple of days.

If you think the sentence works and you don't mind going into middle of mind field, would you please change it on Axel's page. Blackash have a chat 01:56, 7 April 2010 (UTC)

It's not "my link". The link is to the "Open Directory Project", dmoz.org, a respected directory of helpful websites. If you find that pages linked from dmoz.org that are no longer working, you should take it up with them (see the links at the top of their pages). It's considered perfectly acceptable to link to the Open Directory from Wikipedia, and more of those links are working than are not, so removing the link to the directory page is not helpful, just because one of those links might not be working. In addition, you removed the [[Category: links from the pages you were editing, which removes those pages from Wikipedia categories. If you do feel that it's necessary to remove something, don't take out half the page with it. --Darkwind (talk) 22:14, 9 April 2010 (UTC)

Hogwarts Staff

Welcome, and thank you for correcting spelling on the Hogwarts staff page on Wikipedia! However, both spellings of the word you "corrected" are acceptable.

Please familiarize yourself with American and British English spelling differences before making further spelling corrections to articles. Wikipedia has 48,320,721 registered users on this English Wikipedia. These editors use different versions of English including American English and British English. The list of dialects of the English language goes on and on.

When many styles are acceptable, avoid changing from one style to another unless there is some substantial reason for the change. It is only acceptable to change between American and British spelling if the article's topic is particular to one country or the other, or if you are making the article internally consistent.

More information is available at Wikipedia's Manual of Style. Enjoy your time on the encyclopedia. Thank you. Carl Sixsmith (talk) 19:30, 14 April 2010 (UTC)

I'm using a semi-automated program to scan for spelling mistakes, and that is one of the listed corrections that the software makes. If you feel that such a correction is unnecessary, you're welcome to edit the list of typo corrections at the page I linked, or discuss them on the tool's talk page. You're also welcome to add {{bots|deny=AWB}} to Hogwarts staff to prevent other users of this program from making the same change in the future.
Also, I've been a Wikipedia editor for over seven years. Please don't template me - if you have something to say, say it in your own words. Thank you. --Darkwind (talk) 19:43, 14 April 2010 (UTC)
Cheers for the info on stopping the auto-template, didn't mean to cause any offence by using the template, just saves time writing your own text out. I'll add the template to the page. Carl Sixsmith (talk) 19:48, 14 April 2010 (UTC)

Devours/Daltrey/No Plan B

Hi, Darkwind. I'm wondering why you thought the Daltrey template was unrelated at Scott Devours page and deleted it. Devours is currently playing in Daltrey's No Plan B band. They did several dates of a solo tour last year and are opening for Clapton this year. This info is sourced in the article. Pkeets (talk) 17:02, 10 April 2010 (UTC)

It's typical for subject-navigation templates, like {{Roger Daltrey}}, to be included at the bottom of an article -- but only if the article is linked from the template. At the time I removed the template, it did not link to Scott Devours (this is how the template looked at the time), and there were no reliable sources in the article at all. So, to be honest, it looked like someone had just thrown it in there without showing how or why it was related. Now that you've added sources for his relation to Daltrey, and that the template links to the article it's included on, it's much more appropriate for the template to be included. --Darkwind (talk) 19:15, 11 April 2010 (UTC)
Edit: If you're confused about why an editor did something, it's a good idea to take a look at how the article looked as that editor saw it, before you ask them why they did whatever. In this case, that would be this revision. You added sources after I removed the template. To come back and ask me why I removed the template, because the info is now sourced, is somewhat confusing. --Darkwind (talk) 19:27, 11 April 2010 (UTC)

Hoctor's Ballet

Re: Hoctor's Ballet: How does it not get a passing mention when it is a feature of the film, Gershwin wrote this long piece for a famous ballerina, and it has a whole page in Jablonski's book? pg. 300-304 Why would you want to limit what is factually accurate and cited references from trusted print media, especially something as rare as an unheard Gershwin orchestral piece? (And by the way, your citation of this as a song is wrong, it exists as an orchestral piece in score form, not a "song") Ask anyone who knows something about music and they can explain the difference to you. This deserves its own special mention, seeing as how it is Gershwin's only ballet music.

—Preceding unsigned comment added by Stackedaktor (talkcontribs) 01:39, 25 March 2010 (UTC)

I'm not commenting on the intrinsic worth of the piece, I'm commenting on its notability as applies to deserving it's own Wikipedia article. My comment about "only gets a passing mention" was only stating fact as far as how the piece is treated in the article on the movie. The phrase "Hoctor's Ballet" appears exactly once in that article, as part of this paragraph:
"The score is probably the largest source of Gershwin orchestral works unavailable to the general public, at least since the advent of modern stereo recording techniques in the 1950s. The movie contains the only recordings currently available to Gershwin aficionados (unfortunate because not all the incidental music composed for the movie was used in the final cut.) Some of the cuts include: Dance of the Waves, Waltz of the Red Balloons, Graceful and Elegant, Hoctor's Ballet and French Ballet Class (for two pianos.)"
If an article devoted to the movie doesn't even discuss the piece more than that, it's difficult for me to see how it meets Wikipedia's notability guidelines for music (note that WP:NSONG is simply an abbreviation; it applies to all musical creative works whether "songs" or "orchestral piece in score form"). Even if we don't apply that specific guideline, there's still the general notability guideline: "f a topic has received significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject, it is presumed to satisfy the inclusion criteria for a stand-alone article." One page in one book does not constitute significant coverage; but if you feel that it's notable, you're welcome to locate additional reliable, third-party sources that discuss the work, and add them to the article.
Also, I myself am a fan of Gershwin and his work, and he is definitely notable on his own -- but that doesn't mean that every single work that ever came from his pen is worth its own Wikipedia article. Absent any further sources to prove the notability of the work, I may bring it to discussion at articles for deletion, as I feel that anything that's useful to say about the piece can be said in the article on the movie. That article has a substantial section on the score already, and it's entirely possible to give this piece the encyclopedic focus it deserves as part of a larger article. --Darkwind (talk) 03:57, 25 March 2010 (UTC)

That's because your changes were reverted (removed) by other editors almost immediately. This is due to a couple of different factors:
  1. The tone of your addition was not appropriate. What you added contained a lot of "peacock terms" (words that describe the subject positively but don't really say anything), and "marketing speak".
  2. You used the word "we" several times, indicating a conflict of interest. Wikipedia is not a place for you to talk about your organization; it's a place for others to talk about your organization using a neutral point of view. You're welcome to edit articles that aren't related to yourself, your organization, or its products or services, but any edits you make that involve yourself will be looked at much more closely.
  3. In general, your contribution sounded like it was pulled from an admissions pamphlet or some similar kind of advertising. Wikipedia is not a place for advertising or promotion, it is a place to discuss subjects neutrally and objectively.
If you have any other questions or concerns, don't hesitate to reply here and I'll elaborate if I can. You might also be interested in reading Wikipedia's FAQ for organizations. --Darkwind (talk) 19:30, 20 April 2010 (UTC)

Hi, and welcome to Wikipedia! Wikipedia has notability guidelines that help us determine if a subject is notable enough to be included in the encyclopedia. For companies, there's a more specific guideline as well.
Basically, you must have reliable sources to show that the company is notable. If this company has been covered in multiple sources that are independent of the company (i.e. not their own website, etc.), you are welcome to rewrite the article and cite the sources.
I've left a message on your talk page with instructions on how to draft a new version of the article in your user space, where it won't be deleted before you're done working on it. Also, please note that all of the blue links in my message above are links to Wikipedia policies you might find helpful when you're writing articles. --Darkwind (talk) 17:18, 21 April 2010 (UTC)

More or less, it means exactly what it says - the article does not have any citations of reliable sources to verify the claims made in the article. Wikipedia's policy on verifiability requires that you cite reliable sources to verify the information given. Since there are no reliable sources on the article, the tag is there to make readers aware that the article is unverifiable, and to advise editors to fix it if they can. Hello! A category (or any other wiki page, including articles) cannot be renamed if there is already a category or page at the new name. That means that the existing Category:Slavic names must be deleted before Category:Slavic Name can be renamed to "Slavic names", because the name is "already taken" right now. --Darkwind (talk) 19:54, 22 April 2010 (UTC)

Please help. I'am begginer, and "slavci names" was my first article (I largely extended it from "sse also" to full article.)

Wojgniew (talk) 12:35, 24 April 2010 (UTC)

Hi, that's because Category:Slavic names has been deleted as part of a wider discussion about categories of this type, like "American names", "French names", and "Spanish names", which have also been deleted. The discussion has determined that categories for specific ethnic lists of names are not useful. Please read the discussion for information on why other editors feel this way. This doesn't mean that anything is wrong with your article; it just means that there's no longer a specific "names" category to put on it. --Darkwind (talk) 16:35, 24 April 2010 (UTC)

Hello! Unfortunately, you didn't address my main concern. In Google's search results, they show a brief summary of the website address underneath each search result in green text. When the address is too long to fit, Google replaces part of the web address with "..." to save space. By copying the website locations for your references from the green text under each Google search result, vital information about the exact location of the website has been removed.
For example, see this reference (number 1). The website URL is given in the article as "www.mouthshut.com/.../Sree_Krishna_Lunch_Home_-_Madras-135582-1.html", but the actual URL should be "http://www.mouthshut.com/review/Sree_Krishna_Lunch_Home_-_Madras-135582-1.html". Since the one in the article has "..." in the middle instead of "review", it doesn't work as a web location - clicking on it would give you an error.
You will need to go through all of the references and fix all of the ones that have ... in them by replacing them with the full, correct website address. To get the address, click through the Google result, read the page you get to make sure it's an appropriate reference, then copy the URL from the address bar of that page. Please let me know if I can provide any further advice. --Darkwind (talk) 20:28, 26 April 2010 (UTC)

Listening Rhetoric - Your Review

Darkwind~ I cannot say that I agree with your assessment of my entry on listening rhetoric. Booth's concept was not well known at the time of his death, even though he was a prolific scholar and thinker. Since he died only five years ago, this concept has not had time to become well researched, operationalized, and associated with other scholars. The whole point is that someone needed to write about it in order for it to be more widely known. This entry is excerpted from my Masters thesis (which is well researched), and the existence of primary sources indicates that it is too recent for there to be many secondary sources. There are a couple of reviews of his final book and one article about the deep listening aspect of listening rhetoric. I would be glad to add some information from these sources, however, scholarly research in a university setting requires primary sources, so to me, this qualifies as a scholarly article. I am now in a PhD program and will have a chance to operationalize it while doing engagement research and scholarship. I am perfectly happy to fix the "Ibid" references, and I can revise any parts that you think are not neutral, but I do think that listening rhetoric is important and deserves to be exposed to a wider audience. Please let me know what you want me to do.

Thanks, Mswhitaker56

I do apologize if you felt my description as "essay" was condescending; it was not intended that way - it's simply the closest pre-formatted term we have to describe what I saw.
Based on your description, I was basically correct in my assessment - the article would clearly fall under Wikipedia's definition of original research. Specifically, Wikipedia is not intended for the publication of ideas, research, or thought that are not already accepted and published elsewhere, or for the publication of novel synthesis of existing ideas. Although original research is accepted (and desired) in a thesis or other scholarly papers, it is not desired or accepted in Wikipedia.
Please carefully read the page I linked above, and decide whether you can write an article about listening rhetoric that falls within those parameters, with sufficient secondary sources to back it up. Otherwise, you would need to wait until there are additional published secondary sources that support the material in the article before it can be created. --Darkwind (talk) 01:20, 27 April 2010 (UTC)
Also, if you are looking for a platform to publish your material specifically for the purpose of making listening rhetoric more widely known, then I respectfully submit that Wikipedia is not the place you're looking for. Wikipedia is not a platform for spreading new ideas, it is an encyclopedia. --Darkwind (talk) 01:34, 27 April 2010 (UTC)

Darkwind~ I have revised my entry to include reviews of Booth's concept, and I have changed some of the verbiage that might be considered "not neutral." Please re-read the secondary sources I have added to see whether this might improve the entry. Given your description of Wikipedia's interest in information published elsewhere, Booth did publish listening rhetoric elsewhere; it is not original with me. I merely researched it and connected it to his other published works. So, from that perspective, it is encyclopedic. Booth was an important scholar, and his concepts are widely acknowledged in the Academy. I find it sort of astonishing that this is not considered important enough to be published in Wikipedia. I would think that it can be revised as more scholars choose to work with this concept, but given Booth's intention that this concept be widely accessible, I would think that Wikipedia would be an appropriate place for its publication.

Thanks, Mswhitaker

Thanks. I'm not trying to say I think listening rhetoric isn't "worth" being included in Wikipedia, but what I am saying is that there are certain policies that every article must adhere to, including verifiability, which is where we get our requirement for secondary sources. I think it might be best if I let someone else do the next review of your proposed article, so we can get a third opinion. How does that sound? --Darkwind (talk) 02:47, 27 April 2010 (UTC)

That's cool, but I don't understand how this is not "verifiable." All of Booth's works are published and can be readily inspected. The goal of my article is to connect his capstone work to the rest of his copious works. If you know anything about Booth, you know that his concept of the implied author has been a mainstay of literature courses for the past forty years. To be honest, this is our "final" in my Epistemology class, so even if it doesn't get published permanantly, I would appreciate it if you can leave it up until Wednesday evening. It's not that I don't want it published, because I think it's important, but it obviously doesn't meet the criteria for Wikipedia. I would like to have someone else review it just to get another opinion, but I understand if it just won't be accepted.

Thanks, Mswhitaker56

Why did you remove that line that I added to Wikipedia:Template messages/User talk namespace? I wanted to let them know that if you get a warning and another one, it goes to the next level. For example, if a user got a level 4 or 4im warning, it would mean that they would also be blocked the next time they do any of the actions listed in the multi-level category at Wikipedia:Template messages/User talk namespace. Keyboard mouse (talk) 01:47, 1 May 2010 (UTC)

I don't see any evidence of community consensus for that type of "escalation". Each problem edit needs to be handled on its own merits. For example, if a user has vandalized several times and reached a level 4 warning, we're not going to block them just because they later upload an otherwise usable image and forget to specify its copyright status. There are no automatic blocks, and blocks are preventive, not punitive. The whole idea of "automatic escalation" of warning levels across different types of misbehavior is against the spirit of WP:AGF. --Darkwind (talk) 03:43, 1 May 2010 (UTC)
Look at User talk:3-5 file as an example of what I mean. First, the user vandalized, then created an inappropriate page, then vandalized again and got a final warning. Keyboard mouse (talk) 00:54, 2 May 2010 (UTC)
In that case, I think the increased warning was appropriate, because creating vandal pages and vandalizing existing pages are two aspects of the same type of misbehavior. However, I still strongly believe that automatic go-to-the-next-level behavior is against the spirit of WP:AGF. Each problem edit should be handled individually, and increasing the warning level should only happen if it is clearly a continuation of previous behavior, and it seems the editor has disregarded the previous warnings. At any rate, we should stop discussing this here - this would better be handled on the talk page for the templates, so other editors can weigh in and form consensus. --Darkwind (talk) 06:52, 2 May 2010 (UTC)

Deletion of Actionable Intelligence page

Darkwind, can you please help me understand why our page Actionable Intelligence was deleted? Is it because it is a trademarked term? Was it because it was sited as a Verint trademark? I'm trying to get clarity from a novices perspective on what the violation was so we can correct. Thanks, JBrown Verint 11:50 AM Eastern Time, 05/03/2010

First, please see our Frequently Asked Questions for organizations and businesses. This covers a lot of what you must know as someone editing Wikipedia in connection with an organization.
Second, about the actionable intelligence page itself: It was not deleted specifically because the term is trademarked, insofar as we have lots of articles about trademarked terms, such as ActiveX, Big Mac, and Crystal Pepsi. The primary reason that the article was deleted was because it appeared to be promotional or advertising material for your organization or its products or services. Wikipedia is not a place for advertising or promotion. More generally, "marketing speak" or PR materials are not acceptable as they are not considered encyclopedic, and are typically not neutral in point-of-view. For more specific information, please see this section of the business FAQ as well as the third paragraph of this section.
The bottom line is that Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, and to that end, all articles must be about notable topics, written in a neutral point of view. The article you created about actionable intelligence did not appear to meet either of these criteria.
Also - please sign your additions to talk pages with four tildes at the end, as such: ~~~~. This automatically produces your signature and a timestamp in UTC. --Darkwind (talk) 16:16, 3 May 2010 (UTC)
Darkwind, thanks for the feedback. It's a lot to keep straight. I'm certainly not trying to post this in terms of an Advertisement or PR push. I'll try to re-word so it is more generic and hopefully meets the letter and spirit of the Wikipedia guidelines. When it is ready, can you give it a review to see if it conforms with the necessary guidelines? If not is there an editor you can recommend?Jbrown verint (talk) 19:16, 3 May 2010 (UTC)
What I would suggest is either use the Articles for creation process, or create a Userspace draft of the new article and then request feedback from Wikipedia:Requests for feedback. Both of these processes give you a much better chance of someone reviewing the article sooner than if you were to wait for me to look it over. However, if you have any specific questions, I'd be happy to answer them. --Darkwind (talk) 19:31, 3 May 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for the advice. I'll do that. I'll also include some references of where the term actionable intelligence is used and how it is used to describe specific action/data. Thanks again. Jbrown verint (talk) 19:43, 3 May 2010 (UTC)
Also, JBrown Verint, in view of your username, you should read WP:Conflict of interest and WP:Best practices for editors with conflicts of interest. Wikipedia is not a notice-board for companies to promote their products. JohnCD (talk) 16:47, 3 May 2010 (UTC)

Because this is patent nonsense. Also, please don't put the {{helpme}} template on someone else's talk page, and remember to sign your comments on talk pages by adding ~~~~ at the end of the comment. --Darkwind (talk) 16:57, 9 May 2010 (UTC)

Andrea Pirlo edit

Ok, so you set Andrea Pirlo's age back to 40 while I corrected it to his real age of 30. I am italian and I know his real age cause he plays for my country, but if you want a source: http://www.goal.com/en/people/italy/50/andrea-pirlo there you go. thanks. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 186.16.15.143 (talk) 03:55, 11 May 2010 (UTC)

That's fine, then change it back in the article and use <ref> tags to include the source. See Wikipedia:Referencing for beginners for specific instructions. --Darkwind (talk) 03:59, 11 May 2010 (UTC)

Well I think the age of this player is pretty much of common knowledge so I don't think you would need a reference for that. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 186.16.15.143 (talk) 04:04, 11 May 2010 (UTC)

The point I was trying to make was that the reference isn't for me, it's for the article. The message I left for you originally said "If you believe the information that you added was correct, please cite the references or sources or before making the changes"; this means cite them in the article, not cite them at the person who was talking to you. --Darkwind (talk) 04:06, 11 May 2010 (UTC)

Well I haven't seen any other articles that cites specific references when it comes to the age of someone, and your own article stated his birth year to be 1979, while the only thing that didn't state that was the box so I just don't think u would need to add a reference there. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 186.16.15.143 (talk) 04:12, 11 May 2010 (UTC)

More references are never bad. However, if you don't want to add it, don't add it, it's not like I can make you do it. Also, please indent your comments using colons (:) at the front, and sign them by adding ~~~~ at the end. --Darkwind (talk) 04:13, 11 May 2010 (UTC)

Ok so I added a reference, does that work for you? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 186.16.15.143 (talk) 04:19, 11 May 2010 (UTC)

... As I've been trying to say, the reference isn't for me, it's for the article and the community of editors at large. --Darkwind (talk) 12:32, 11 May 2010 (UTC)

Grab some glory, and a barnstar

Hi, I'd like to invite you to participate in the Guild of Copy Editors July 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive. In May, about 30 editors helped remove the {{copyedit}} tag from 1175 articles. The backlog is still over 7500 articles, and extends back to the beginning of 2008! We really need your help to reduce it. Copyediting just a couple articles can qualify you for a barnstar. Serious copyeditors can win prestigious and exclusive rewards. See the event page for more information. And thanks for your consideration. ɳorɑfʈ Talk! 14:41, 10 June 2010 (UTC)

AfC- World Centre of Excellence for Destinations

I disagree with you declining the submission of this article, because I feel that it qualifies for notability. The primary criteria for determining whether an organization is notable or not is not whether the organization has won some awards, but whether it has received significant coverage in secondary sources. A simple search through Google proves that the organization has received significant coverage in secondary sources, and it has also made high-importance contracts with some governments. The topic, instead of not being notable, is instead in need of a few more additions to eliminate any remaining notability concerns, which is why I put it on hold instead of declining it. --Slon02 (talk) 15:21, 12 June 2010 (UTC)

GOCE Backlog Elimination Drive Wrap-up

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors July 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive. Thanks to all who participated in the drive! Over 100 editors—including Jimbo Wales—signed up this time (nearly triple the participants of the May drive). This benefited the Guild as well as the articles in need of copy editing. You can see from the comparison graphs that we increased the number of completed copyedits substantially. Unfortunately, we were not able to meet our goal of completely wiping out 2008 from the queue. We also were not able to reduce the backlog to less than 6,000 articles. We suspect people were busy with real life summertime things, at least in the northern hemisphere! We were able to remove the months of January, February, March, April, and May from the backlog, and we almost wiped out the month of June. We reduced the backlog by 1,289 articles (17%), so all in all it was a very successful drive, and we will be holding another event soon. We'll come up with some new ideas to try to keep things fresh and interesting. Keep up the good work, everybody!

Stats
If you copy edited at least 4,000 words, you qualify for a barnstar. If you edited in the May 2010 GOCE Backlog Elimination Drive, your word totals are cumulative for barnstars (not the leaderboard). Over the course of the next week or two, we will be handing out the barnstars.

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive!

GOCE November 2010 backlog elimination drive progress graphs

We have reached the midway point in our backlog elimination drive, so here is an update.

Participation report — The November drive has 53 participants at this point. We had 77 participants in the September drive. In July, 95 people signed up for the drive, and in May we had 36. If you are not participating, it is not too late to join!

Progress report — The drive is quite successful so far, as we have already almost reached our target of a 10% reduction in the number of articles in the backlog. We are doing very well at keeping our Requests page clear, as those articles count double for word count for this drive.

Please keep in mind the possibility of removing other tags when you are finished with an article. If the article no longer needs {{cleanup}}, {{wikify}}, or other similar maintenance tags, please remove them, as this will make the tasks of other WikiProjects easier to complete. Thanks very much for participating in the Drive, and see you at the finish line!

Stats

GOCE November 2010 backlog elimination drive graphs
  • 58 people signed up for this drive. Of these, 48 people participated in the drive.
  • Although we did not eliminate the months we planned to (January, February, and March 2009; and August, September, and October 2010), we did reduce the backlog by 627 articles (11.2%), which was over our goal of 10%.
  • 49 awards will go out to 33 of 48 participants. Check out the complete list of barnstar winners here.

Barnstars

If you copy edited at least 4,000 words, you qualify for a barnstar. If you participated in the September 2010 backlog elimination drive, you may have earned roll-over words (more details can be found here). These roll-over words count as credit towards earning barnstars, except for leaderboard awards. We will be delivering these barnstars within the next couple of weeks.

Our next drive is scheduled for January 2011. In the meantime, please consider helping out at the Wikification drive or any of the other places where help with backlogs is needed.

A question about my page

Hi Darkwind,

I was wondering how to make my page more "popular". The problem I have here is that I cannot search for my page unless I type its full name. Thanks for helping!!

Umbernisitani (talk) 04:18, 15 January 2011 (UTC)Umbernisitani

Hello! I'm not very familiar with how the suggestions in the search bar work, but I believe it is based on how many other pages link to your article. That means that as other Wikipedians discover the new article and link to it from appropriate pages, it will become more popular (and show up higher in search suggestions) over time. However, remember that the goal on Wikipedia is to create an encyclopedia, not to make popular pages! :) --Darkwind (talk) 04:21, 15 January 2011 (UTC)

regarding Audi V8 article

Well, I try, but the way the article is now - it is not neutral also. As the car actually have a huge amount of in-built design problems which was the reason for short discontinueing of the model. People must see the other hand of the medal. Believe me, I own one and it's not as affordable and simple as it's written. It is the least reliable Audi model ever built actually. p.s. I'm Diskovod on Wiki, I'm just not logged in. 109.205.248.86 (talk) 05:38, 15 January 2011 (UTC)

Okay, maybe later. But anyway the article must be written for all people, not car mechanics. I own '84 Celica GT-R, a quite rare japanese version, '74 Ford Taunus, which is "as simple as drum" (as we say in Russian) and an Audi V8 as a daily driver. Or daily not driver because of the lazy engineers. Because it's phenomenonly unreliable for an Audi. I mean the electrical systems aswell as engine, brakes and hydraulics. You would NEVER see an Audi V8 with more than 200 miles on. Cause they die damn dead at this mileage. And every guy searching for a cheap daily driver should think twice reading the article and choose Lexus LS400, not a pinnacle of Ingolstadt engineering of the late 80s. Well, it's 8:50 AM here, in Saint-Petersburg, Russia and I have just came from a night fixing my friend's C32 AMG and I want to sleep. BTW, I've been in SF in 1998. That's a very nice city! Thanks anyway and good luck. Alex. 109.205.248.86 (talk) 05:57, 15 January 2011 (UTC)

GOCE drive news

Guild of Copy Editors January 2011 backlog elimination drive

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors January 2011 Backlog elimination drive! The drive is halfway over, so here are some mid-drive stats.

Participation
GOCE January 2011 backlog elimination drive progress graphs

So far, 43 people have signed up for this drive. Of these, 25 have participated. If you signed up for the drive but haven't participated yet, it's not too late! Try to copy edit at least a few articles. Remember, if you have rollover words from the last drive, you will lose them if you do not participate in this drive. If you haven't signed up for the drive yet, you can sign up now.

Progress report

We have eliminated two months from the backlog – January and February 2009. One of our goals is to eliminate as many months as possible from the 2009 backlog. Please help us reduce the size of this part of the backlog if you haven't already. Another goal is to reduce the entire backlog by 10%, or by 515 articles. Currently, we have eliminated 375 articles from the queue, so if each participant copy edits four more articles, we will reach that goal.

Thank you for participating in the January 2011 drive. We anticipate it will be another big success!

Message from Alphonso125

Darkwind,

In the article about "Sister Souljah" moments I added a few words to complete a statement that Jessie Jackson made about (then) Senator Obama.

I found these changes reversed and received a warning that I was "vandalizing". I do not understand how an historically accurate correction could possibly be deemed as vandalism.

Can you tell me, please, why the addition of a few accurate words is objectinable to you?

Alphonso125 (talk) 22:44, 17 January 2011 (UTC)

If you believe that the words you are adding are accurate, then you need to cite a reliable source that verifies this information. Otherwise, it can be considered a slander of Rev. Jackson, and that falls under the biographies of living persons policy that basically says you can't say anything negative about a living person if you do not (in the same edit) include a source that verifies the statement. Please read over the links I've provided here and let me know if you have any further questions. --Darkwind (talk) 23:21, 17 January 2011 (UTC)
I can't believe that you are overseeing the editing about Jessie Jackson and you did not know about that comment. It was national news for a week (on some outlets). I've added a source... — Preceding unsigned comment added by Alphonso125 (talkcontribs) 23:38, January 17, 2011 (UTC)
First, it doesn't matter if I know about what he said or not. It's Wikipedia's policy of verifiability that matters. Just like "everyone knows" that FDR said the famous quote about "nothing to fear but fear itself" - if you're going to quote it in Wikipedia, you still need to cite a source. Also, I'm not overseeing anything, I'm just doing vandalism patrols. I guarantee you if you insert the words "cut his nuts off" into just about any Wikipedia article, the edit will pop up on no less than 10 editor's screens (and probably a bot or two as well), and your addition will be removed post-haste, unless you use an edit summary and cite a reliable source. --Darkwind (talk) 01:46, 18 January 2011 (UTC)
Darkwind, Fair enough. I'm new here. I think, however, that a request for a citation may be more appropriate than an accusation of "vandalism" in some cases.

Alphonso125 (talk) 02:57, 18 January 2011 (UTC)

You might be right as far as that goes, but the tool I was using does not offer a choice of user messages to leave for the user whose changes are being removed. I apologize if you feel insulted by the message(s) I left for you. --Darkwind (talk) 03:23, 21 January 2011 (UTC)

Mad Doctor X

Hello. I edited Mad Doctor Xs name as it was wrong. It was reverted back. I am the artist and my name is Jason Carter, not tunbridge. thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Monty Propps (talkcontribs) 00:12, 21 January 2011 (UTC)

Thing is, the article has had that name in it since 2008, and if someone comes along and changes all the names without citing a source, it sure looks like vandalism. I looked online and can't find anything but Wikipedia that references a name for this artist, so it's kind of hard to prove either way. --Darkwind (talk) 03:23, 21 January 2011 (UTC)

Yeah, but it's easier for me to prove I am the writer than for you to prove I am not. Check with PRS (Performing Rights Society) and they will confirm that credits for Mad Doctor X are FJ Carter. If you check with Discogs you will also see they list FJ Carter as Mad Doctor X. Now please, be a good fellow and leave the correct information as it is now. Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Monty Propps (talkcontribs) 22:32, January 29, 2011

Wikipedia Campus Ambassador needed

Hi! My name is Annie Lin - I'm the Campus Team Coordinator at the Wikimedia Foundation. I'm contacting you because you're listed as a resident of San Francisco, and we're currently looking for a friendly Wikipedian to teach students in a University of San Francisco class how to use/edit Wikipedia. This is a role titled the "Wikipedia Campus Ambassador," and you'll basically be doing in-class presentations about Wikipedia, running Wikipedia labs/workshops, and in general providing face-to-face Wikipedia help for the professor and the students in the class. The time commitment is about 3-5 hours a week (with variations throughout the semester), and for this particular University of San Francisco class, most of the workload will be between March and May.

Please let me know if you're interested!

Thanks. Annie Lin (Campus Team Coordinator, Wikimedia Foundation) (talk) 19:03, 25 January 2011 (UTC)

GOCE January Backlog elimination drive conclusion

Guild of Copy Editors January 2011 Backlog elimination drive

Greetings from the January 2011 Backlog elimination drive! We have reached the end of the month and the end of another successful drive; thanks to all who participated.

Statistics
  • 54 people signed up for the year's first Backlog elimination drive. Of these, 40 participated.
  • One of our goals was to reduce the size of the backlog by at least 10%. We managed to reduce the backlog by 633 articles, or about 12%.
  • Another goal was to eliminate as many 2009 months as possible from the queue. We eliminated January, February, March, and April—4 out of 12 months is not bad! In addition, we eliminated 37% of all remaining 2009 articles from the queue.
  • Chaosdruid copy edited Kutch Gurjar Kashtriya for 32,711 words, which is the largest single article completed in one of our drives so far. This article counts as six 5000-K articles, and Chaosdruid wins the "most 5000-K articles" leaderboard category. Way to go! A complete list of individual results is here.
Barnstars

If you copy edited at least 4,000 words, you qualify for a barnstar. If you participated in the November 2010 Backlog elimination drive, you may have earned roll-over words (more details can be found here).
