Australian topics
[edit]Hey there! While it's always really nice to see people writing articles on Australian topics - we always need more - it's a lot nicer to read articles that have a bit of information in them. Do you think you'd be able to write articles of a paragraph or two? They're a lot more useful than just one or two lines. Ambi 03:09, 23 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- I'm working up to it... I'm still trying to get a feel for how everything works here. -- Danny Yee 22:25, 25 Apr 2005 (UTC)
When I noticed you had edited a page I had also worked on (Richard Lewontin), I took the liberty of creating a content page about you. I've admired your reviews for a long time (I think we've exchanged a couple emails, years ago), and think you are well notable for this contribution. I apologize for not making the first draft of the article on you better, but hopefully it will get better by magic. Lulu of the Lotus-Eaters 19:28, 5 November 2005 (UTC)
- Oh, followup: would it be OK to use the picture of you that you have on your homepage on WP? (i.e. released as GFDL or PD). Lulu of the Lotus-Eaters 19:30, 5 November 2005 (UTC)
Hmmm... I did not know that it was created and VfD/AfD'd earlier. But, frankly, I think it was the wrong decision at that time (dunno exactly what the old page contained, of course). I knew who you were outside WP the moment I saw your name on an edit (well, I wasn't sure immediately that it was the same Danny Yee; but it turned out to be). By my personal standards, anyone I know by reputation (not just personally) years before I ever edited WP is sufficiently notable to have an article.
I have a personal schtick too, I confess. The article on me (David Mertz) failed AfD twice. The truth is, I'm plainly notable, but some people who disagreed with me on purely WP issues wanted to kill it out of spite. But during the second one, I noticed that Simson Garfinkel was put on AfD, for gosh sake! (but failed AfD, fortunately). There have been a few other writerly notables whom I've defended on AfD too. All the while, every actor who appeared in a couple porn films, and every indie band that sells 2000 records, has a page that no one wants to delete. Or heck, characters in video games get their own pages. There's some sort of prejudice against writers and folks with academic or intellectual pursuits, where a much higher standard of noteriety is often proclaimed than for "low culture" notables (I don't mean to cast aspersion on popular culture—I consume and enjoy a lot of it—but people who do things in academia are worth mentioning too... not that you're exactly an academic, of course, but many of the books you review are on fairly intellectual subjects).
Anyway, if someone tries to AfD the new page, I'll certainly defend its retention strenuously. I believe you are exactly the kind of notable person who readers of WP should be able to find information on. I don't think you're the most important person with an article, by a long shot (nor do you, of course). But you've probably been read by over a million people by this point! It's quite an accomplishment. Lulu of the Lotus-Eaters 01:08, 6 November 2005 (UTC)
Why do you say the edits by User:Henry1776 to the Lott page are by a sockpuppet? Your response was to revert without substantive comment. Rkevins82 - TALK 03:00, 12 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit]Gamelan lists
[edit]Hi, I've started creating lists of Gamelan ensembles in various countries for posting on Wikipedia. I've completed List of gamelan ensembles in the United States and am starting on the UK. I'm wondering if you'd be interested in putting together the lists for Australia and New Zealand, as you seem to have all this information. It would be great if they were all done in the same format. Take a look and let me know if the format that I have done is acceptable, and let me know if you have any ideas for improvements. After the UK, I'm thinking of starting on a list of ensembles in Bali. This doesn't seem to exist anywhere, and I'm hoping to get help from people on the Gamlelan e-mail list out of Dartmouth (are you subscribed?). I don't know enough about Javanese gamelan to do the Java list. Thanks. --Samuel Wantman 07:52, 10 February 2006 (UTC)
crossref from Romila Thapar talk page
[edit]I grew up being taught history from the three History of India text books written by her in my school. Our History [teacher] took the the official History text for class VII and dumped it. Then she made sure we all had a copy of HoI volume I, and our real education about Indian history began. Most of my understandings, beliefs, and knowledge about my country stem from those three books. I'm glad to see someone decided to write an article on her.

Romila sows communalism
[edit]Hi Danny,
It's great that an encyclopeadic article is created for Ms. Romila Thapar. However, under the pretext of being a left leaning Marxist historian, Ms.Romila has authored many anti-Hindu works. She questions the scriptures of Hinduism, but doesn't have the same approach towards other religions. She takes a fanatical extremist anti-Hindu stand. She, of course is a proponent of Western thinking. It is said that the grass on the other side is greener and that is true for people like Ms.Thapar. But she would do well to understand that the grass on the other side, could be poisonous too. Ms.Thapar conveniently says she is fighting communalism. If she says she is secular, and tolerant, then I presume she is culturally tolerant as well. She would be a global citizen. I would request her to go to some theocratic states and preach secularism there. Her tirades against Hinduism are tolerated in India, not just because India is a secular state. Let me tell you that even if India would have been a theocracy (read Hindu Rashtra), she would have been tolerated. Tolerance is in Indian ethos. But if she would have been in a theocracy (like those Islamic states), she would have been severely prosecuted for blasphemy. But she doesn't understand that. She goes on rambling about things that doesn't exist. I am not a Hindutva supporter, but historians like Ms.Thapar make me feel that I should be one. But my true Indian origins stops me from adopting the Hindutva ideology. As far as I dislike Hindutva, I also abhor distorted history lessons of Ms.Thapar. However, as I said it's my personal opinion. I am a liberal and a proponent of free speech, so I would say let this article remain, but make it neutral and I would say let the word "alleged" remain as she doesn't seem to be removing communalism but feeding the Hindutva hate preachers and Islamic fundamentalists as well.

Bad Practice
[edit]Danny, Instead of just deleting the word "documented proofs", you should have discussed it in talk page. This is very bad practice to push what you think is correct. Don't do so please again. Only after discussion on talk page, do such things.

[edit]He is a crank. Pain and simple. But deleting will not accomplish what you're after. We need to explain WHY he is crank and provide spurces in the article text. I can't do this at the moment. Thanks for sticking up for reason and truth.--Lacatosias 07:55, 2 April 2006 (UTC)

Cruft
[edit]Hi Danny. Ideally I turn relevant cruft (state emblem, popular animated character etc) into prose and cut anything really useless like x is the mascot of Kentucky bank q, character m had a pet x. There is no specific policy or guideline, but you can always cite WP:NOT - Wikipedia is not an indiscriminate collection of information.--nixie 13:25, 1 May 2006 (UTC)
Shivaji entry
[edit]Hello Danny. I want to commend you on your contributions to the Shivaji article, and for mentioning Laine's book and the reaction to it in an objective manner. I personally found nothing in Laine's book that was deliberately irreverent; notwithstanding that he could have avoided controversy by deleting a few references which were not really necessary for the integrity of his narration. Also, although what happened with BORI was certainly despicable in the extreme, I think the whole incident was also an instructive one, because it dispelled the illusion of hero-worship of Shivaji that many of his followers like to wallow in. In India, there are many historical figures (and even current, living ones) who are regarded as gods, and any criticism of them is violently reacted to. I think these hero-worshippers need to be taught repeatedly that their 'gods' are human beings, and that their flawed character does not diminish their greatness as such. Ironically, a lot of such public reaction is not even based on devotion or hero-worship, but primarily based on political motivation and interest. I am sure that most common citizens of Maharashtra and Pune, where I am from, know much more about Shivaji than the hoodlums who desecrated BORI under the pretext of Shivaji worship. That's the most tragic part of a lot of these cultural onslaughts; that they are motivated purely by political interests rather by any kind of even fanatical but still informed conviction. In the end, the members of the Sambhaji Brigade turn out to be nothing more than being similar to the Nazi SS; common thieves and violent criminals, motivated by nothing more than political greed, without any knowledge of even what they are fighting about. So much for all their exalted attitude of pseudo cultural righteousness. In the list of those who want to defend and respect their culture, their names will not appear even at the very bottom. Sorry for the somewhat emotional comments, but having grown up in Pune which is supposed to be a cauldron of Marathi culture and decency, such travesty does rankle and keep festering. Keep up the good work. Ashujo

[edit]Hi, I see this guy was causing you some trouble on the 1421 page. Dumb Luck
[edit]Hi.
Your edits to Dumb Luck have effectively changed the meaning of the article from a piece about the film to one about the novel. Since your intention was to have the novel at Dumb Luck and the film at Dumb Luck (film), it would have been better to move the article to Dumb Luck (film) rather than copying and pasting the content, thus preserving the article's history and relevant content, and then replace the resulting redirect at Dumb Luck with the single paragraph about the novel.
Please note that as a result of your copy and paste effort:
- the edit history of the film article must be sought from an entirely unrelated article
- the disambiguation link to Dumb Luck / No Body Loves Grim is still attached to the film article, when it properly belongs to whatever happens to be at Dumb Luck
- the film project tag on the Dumb Luck talk page is now attached to an article which is not about a film
- The article about the film is no longer a part of the film project.
Furthermore, I would question whether there is any reason why the novel has a better claim to the name than the film at all. A better approach still, IMO, would have been to move the article to Dumb Luck (film), paste the paragraph about the novel to Dumb Luck (novel), and change the redirect into a disambiguation page with links to both.
I will leave it to you to decide whether the best course at this stage would be to fix the resulting problems, or have an administrator delete the film page so we can revert your edit and start over.
Please also note that you left no edit summary for what was a very major change.
Regards, TheMadBaron 09:48, 25 October 2006 (UTC)
Ooops, I'm sorry about that. I haven't done an article move before, so I didn't think about it at all. What do you suggest I do? -- Danny Yee 10:17, 25 October 2006 (UTC)
No harm done. We learn through our mistakes. It's fortunate, in a way, that you get this chance to practise on a page which isn't particularly popular.
Fortunately, nobody's edited either page since the move, so it shouldn't be difficult to fix.... you could....
1) Revert your last edit to Dumb Luck, thus recreating the combined film and novel article at that location.
2) Blank the content of Dumb Luck (film), leaving a deletion tag ( {{db|Reason}} ) in it's place. Replace "Reason" with a note to the effect that the article was created in error in a botched move, already exists at Dumb Luck, and its deletion is being requested by its creator. Leave an edit summary saying "deletion requested by creator - see User talk:Danny Yee#Dumb Luck".
3) Create your novel page at Dumb Luck (novel). Put a dablink at Dumb Luck, and remove the split tags and the content pertaining to the novel from that page.
4) If and when an admin deletes Dumb Luck (film), recreate it by moving Dumb Luck as described in my previous message.... and you should really fix the incoming wikilinks, this time.... if you like, I'd be happy do any part of step 4 myself.... but I think you could use the practise. ;)
Let me know if you need any help. TheMadBaron 11:00, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit]re the current Java discussion (groan), why can't i be as articulate and succint as you. I love: The fact that lots of poorly educated people have never heard of Java is something Wikipedia should be helping to fix, not to reinforce. --Merbabu 08:32, 28 October 2006 (UTC)

- Is Bali the next battle? ;-) --Merbabu 04:18, 29 October 2006 (UTC)
Actually, the Java article is of a fairly lousy quality relative to Java's notability. It could be a fine piece. Perhaps editors have been reluctant to lengthen it as most information can be found in more detailed articles, however, I don't believe that readers should have to ferret around on other linked pages unless the "summary" page is too long. Some of those sections are just list of links, and others not much more. FOr example, why not discuss the Javanese and the Sundanese, rather than just link to them. Discuss, how Islam tends to be more orthodox in Sunda whereas in "Jawa" it is fused with more superstitious beliefs. And much more. --Merbabu 14:10, 29 October 2006 (UTC)
