I'm not sure that the Irish state only became independent in 1938, as I think the ports never formed part of the Irish Free State, and therefore wouldn't affect its independence in a constitutional sense. Thanks. The point is that we weren't fully independent in foreign policy, as in the event of a major war the Royal Navy's use of the ports would have made us a target for the enemy. (DannySvens (talk) 20:22, 24 February 2014 (UTC))[reply]
