Kepler-22b receives its name because it is the 1st planet discovered in the star system labeled kepler-22. Before its confirmation it had been labeled KOI 87.01. It was discovered by referencing data from the Kepler telescope and a series of ground telescopes. This planet has recieved worldwide attention due to it being located in it's star's Goldilocks zone and having a radius similar to that of earths. Estimates show that it should have an equilibrium temperature to be aproximately 284kelvin or 11°C. Other models suggest that with an earthlike atmosphere the temperature should be aproximately 295K or 22°C.
