Replaceable fair use File:UCLA and University of Texas quidditch tackle.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:UCLA and University of Texas quidditch tackle.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. B (talk) 23:24, 26 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there, I'm HasteurBot. I just wanted to let you know that Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Chaser (quidditch), a page you created, has not been edited in 6 months. The Articles for Creation space is not an indefinite storage location for content that is not appropriate for articlespace.

If your submission is not edited soon, it could be nominated for deletion. If you would like to attempt to save it, you will need to improve it.

You may request Userfication of the content if it meets requirements.

If the deletion has already occured, instructions on how you may be able to retrieve it are available at WP:REFUND/G13.

Thank you for your attention. HasteurBot (talk) 02:08, 9 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Danachos. It has been over six months since you last edited your WP:AFC draft article submission, entitled "Chaser (quidditch)".

The page will shortly be deleted. If you plan on editing the page to address the issues raised when it was declined and resubmit it, simply edit the submission and remove the {{db-afc}} or {{db-g13}} code. Please note that Articles for Creation is not for indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace.

If your submission has already been deleted by the time you get there, and you want to retrieve it, copy this code: {{subst:Refund/G13|Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Chaser (quidditch)}}, paste it in the edit box at this link, click "Save page", and an administrator will in most cases undelete the submission.

Thanks for your submission to Wikipedia, and happy editing. —rybec 01:45, 10 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Creation of Belgium Muggle Quidditch and Belgium national quidditch team

[edit]

Hello,

I created the pages Belgium Muggle Quidditch and Belgium national quidditch team because of their legitimacy within their host organizations (the IQA and BMQ, respectively). BMQ is the official organization of all things quidditch within Belgium, acting as the link between teams and players and the IQA itself. Its roles include, but are not limited to: fee collection, rule setting, basic coaching and reffing standards and event creation. BMQ is soon to have ASBL/VZW status in Belgium (non-profit status). The Gryffins is the official national team of Belgium for the sport of quidditch, made official by the IQA and BMQ where they will make their debut in July 2014 at the Global Games. This team will, then, stay around and be host to new players at the discretion of the BMQ/those who the BMQ put in charge in the following years at any national-team-event or subsequent IQA Global Games.

Hello, I'm BracketBot. I have automatically detected that your edit to Quidditch Canada may have broken the syntax by modifying 4 "{}"s. If you have, don't worry: just edit the page again to fix it. A page you started (Quidditch Benelux) has been reviewed!

[edit]

Thanks for creating Quidditch Benelux, Danachos!

Wikipedia editor Polyglot just reviewed your page, and wrote this note for you:

I had my doubts as it seems a bit absurd. I didn't read the rules. I did read Harry Potter a few times and now I'm wondering where you'd get flying broomsticks, let alone a Nimbus. And where can one get insurance for playing this dangerous game?

To reply, leave a comment on Polyglot's talk page.

Learn more about page curation.

I shouldn't have tried to leave a funny comment. The problem when reviewing pages is that sometimes vandals create pages which look OK. That's why I had to investigate a bit further before being able to review the page. Thanks for your contribution. Will you create pages in Dutch and French as well?--Polyglot (talk) 09:39, 1 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Danachos. I wanted to let you know that I’m proposing an article that you started, Muggle Quidditch Nederland, for deletion because I don't think it meets our criteria for inclusion. If you don't want the article deleted:

  1. edit the page
  2. remove the text that looks like this: {{proposed deletion/dated...}}
  3. save the page

Also, be sure to explain why you think the article should be kept in your edit summary or on the article's talk page. If you don't do so, it may be deleted later anyway.

You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions. Jayakumar RG (talk) 10:28, 1 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Deleted the tag and updated the page with more comprehensive citations and additional info! But thank you for reviewing it, though. I do firmly believe it is an article that should be on Wikipedia because of its noteworthiness as it is the official governing body for the sport of quidditch within the NL. –– Danachos (talk) 10:53, 1 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The article Belgium Muggle Quidditch has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No outside sources, thus fails WP:GNG.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. A tag has been placed on File:Quidditch Balls Lined Up Smalle.JPG requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F2 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an image page for a missing or corrupt image or an empty image description page for a Commons-hosted image.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a search with the contents of Belgian Quidditch Federation, and it appears to be very similar to another Wikipedia page: Belgium Muggle Quidditch. It is possible that you have accidentally duplicated contents, or made an error while creating the page— you might want to look at the pages and see if that is the case. If you are intentionally trying to rename an article, please see Help:Moving a page for instructions on how to do this without copying and pasting. If you are trying to move or copy content from one article to a different one, please see Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia and be sure you have acknowledged the duplication of material in an edit summary to preserve attribution history.

It is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article. CorenSearchBot (talk) 17:57, 11 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

It's been removed and archived in the page history for now, but if you'd like to include a citation and re-add it, please do so! If you need guidance on referencing, please see the referencing for beginners tutorial, or if you think I made a mistake, you can leave me a message on my talk page. In particular, what is a "vyomanaut"? Also, we have a particular style for the opening lead sentence, which defines the topic. "Cosmonaut" is included because it is the most frequently (by far) occurring synonym, and has a redirect. Other terms should be added to the Terminology section (with citation). Stop you copy-paste moves. It's disruptive, and you've been here long enough to know better. If you want to move the article, make a proper move request.

Stop changing to unsupported names, and stop edit-warring over them. If you believe a names is appropriate per WP:COMMONNAME, then present your evidence on the talk page. I appreciate the contributions you've made at e.g. Quebec SL, but if you continue to disrupt Wikipedia, I'll make a request to have you blocked from editing. — kwami (talk) 19:07, 24 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Libras

[edit]

Hi. It doesn't really matter what the Brazilian govt calls it, or what native speakers prefer it to be called in Portuguese. Since we write in English, what matters is what it's called in English, particularly in reliable sources on the subject. See WP:COMMONNAME. — kwami (talk) 00:46, 29 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Libras is used in English as it is used in Portuguese. I will revert the changes and cite one: a scholarly article on comparative iconographical and lexical study and two: the University of Connecticut's (UCONN) own studies on ASL and Libras where they say "structure of American Sign Language (ASL) and Brazilian Sign Language (Libras)." It is commonly referred to as Libras in linguistics spheres in English (and French, Portuguese and Spanish), however I cannot cite personal experience, so I will rely on my two references noted above when I make the changes. – Danachos (talk) 02:32, 2 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
All 2ary refs I've seen use BSL. That's also the name of the article. Odd to have one name for the title and another for the text. If you want to change the name, make a proper move request with evidence that it is actually the common name, not just that you can dig up some sources which use it. — kwami (talk) 04:27, 2 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

IUR

[edit]

Hi. Since I revert so many of your edits, I thought I would explain why in this case. First, IUR does not belong at 'Inuit languages' as it's not the topic of the article. I also removed much of the text at 'Inuit' as it contradicted itself, first saying it's only found in Nunuvut, then saying that it may be spoken across Canada, and in any case details belong in the main article. Finally, you used bad references, claiming the info dates to Ethnologue 10 or earlier when it wasn't even added until the 18th edition. Just so you know I'm not doing this to be an ass. — kwami (talk) 02:05, 2 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

But, no, IUR is an Inuit language as it is talking about the languages of the Inuit people, not of the Eskimo–Aleut language family itself. The first sentence is hearing-centric: "The Inuit languages are a closely related group of Native American languages traditionally spoken across the North American Arctic and to some extent in the subarctic in Labrador." choosing to portray all Inuit languages as oral languages within the Eskimo–Aleut family, however as IUR was born and is spoken by Inuit, it is, at its core, an Inuit language. The article discusses Inuit languages or languages of the Inuit. "The total population of Inuit speaking their traditional languages..." is in the intro to the page, which indicates that it is talking about all the native Inuit languages which would include IUR. Also, it can be adjusted to say "...it has only be found in Nunavut..." Finally, I apologize for the mis-citing of Ethnologue (as I only now am learning how to properly cite that source), but what other issues are present in the citations? Scholarly articles discussing typology as well as news reports all appear to be adequate sources proving this language exists. – Danachos (talk) 02:17, 2 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Eeyou Istchee James Bay Territory

[edit]

Thanks for adding the infobox for Eeyou Istchee James Bay Territory. I'd recently written the page as it was sparse and no one had updated it. As hard as I tried, though, there is one piece of information I couldn't find that maybe you might know the answer to. Which of the subdivisions act as the administrative seat of the combined territory, now? Also, does Nord-du-Québec have an administrative seat? --Criticalthinker (talk) 09:26, 28 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

No worries! I was just working on a fun project myself and realised that the flag, the Cree and French names and, well, the infobox were missing! Otherwise, sorry, I am no help elsewhere. My focus was more along the Cree Nation itself. Danachos (talk) 23:26, 29 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Copying within Wikipedia requires proper attribution

[edit]

Information icon Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you copied or moved text from Grand Council of the Crees into Cree Nation Government. While you are welcome to re-use Wikipedia's content, here or elsewhere, Wikipedia's licensing does require that you provide attribution to the original contributor(s). When copying within Wikipedia, this is supplied at minimum in an edit summary at the page into which you've copied content, disclosing the copying and linking to the copied page, e.g., copied content from [[page name]]; see that page's history for attribution. It is good practice, especially if copying is extensive, to also place a properly formatted {{copied}} template on the talk pages of the source and destination. The attribution has been provided for this situation, but if you have copied material between pages before, even if it was a long time ago, please provide attribution for that duplication. You can read more about the procedure and the reasons at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. Thank you. If you are the sole author of the prose that was moved, attribution is not required. — Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 12:48, 30 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Use commonly recognizable names

[edit]
WP:COMMONNAME

"In Wikipedia, an article title is a natural language word or expression that indicates the subject of the article: as such the article title is usually the name of the person, or of the place, or of whatever else the topic of the article is. However, some topics have multiple names, and this can lead to confusion about which name should be used in the article's title. Wikipedia generally prefers the name that is most commonly used (as determined by its prevalence in a significant majority of independent, reliable English-language sources) as such names will usually best fit the criteria. When there is no single, obvious name that is demonstrably the most frequently used for the topic by these sources, editors should reach a consensus as to which title is best by considering these criteria directly.

Wikipedia does not necessarily use the subject's "official" name as an article title; it generally prefers to use the name that is most frequently used to refer to the subject in English-language reliable sources. This includes usage in the sources used as references for the article. For cases where usage differs among English-speaking countries, see also National varieties of English."

Kamloops residential school

[edit]

Saw your comments at K.e.coffman's talk page. I have encountered similar issues in residential school articles, especially the one in Kamloops, as they took the initiative to contract with an archaeologist. I have an observation that may be helpful: First Nations are impeded by their fragmentation. There is no question in my mind that this was a deliberate tactic on the part of the British. I do not know if there is a First Nations portal, but if there is I suggest joining it, and if not I suggest starting one.

The issue I saw with the residential school articles was that the report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission was given disproportionate weight and used to imply that all is well now, probably because editors wanted to believe this. I am currently preoccupied with something else, but feel free to ping me if you like. As an example of another indigenous issue that could use broad support, may I mention the wildfire that devastated Lytton BC? Elinruby (talk) 11:41, 21 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Notice

The article ASLwrite has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Not notable. No widespread use, no reliable sources. Most sources here are primary sources, not secondary.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. [edit]

Hello! Voting in the 2024 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 2 December 2024. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
