Alice Ripley page
Hoping you can advise. An editor on the noticeboard is speculating that Ripley is the one who deleted info, but she is currently working in Barcelona. Wouldn't her IP address show her to be in Barcelona? Thank you. JunoSpriteRocket (talk) 16:50, 9 July 2022 (UTC)
- Sorry, I'm not going to speculate on that sort of off-wiki situation here. DMacks (talk) 17:10, 9 July 2022 (UTC)
- Okay, no problem. What does off-wiki mean? JunoSpriteRocket (talk) 17:46, 9 July 2022 (UTC)
- "On-wiki" means looking at specific edits made, and comparisons of account names and IPs that seem to be focused on a certain topic. "Off-wiki" means things about the person suspected of making edits that have not been confirmed by on-wiki actions, or other real-world aspects of the editor. So obviously I can talk about where an IP geo-locates (pure technical fact) and one can often know where a well-known public person is and other media-reported aspects of their public life (off-wiki behavior, though I don't follow celebs or reports on them) and that an IP's edits might seen to be biased or violate a policy/guideline (on-wiki behavior). But I myself am not going to bring together all those aspects to make a conclusion about what's happening in this wiki article. DMacks (talk) 18:19, 9 July 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks for the explanation. JunoSpriteRocket (talk) 18:30, 9 July 2022 (UTC)

Recent changes
- In the Vector 2022 skin, the page title is now displayed above the tabs such as Discussion, Read, Edit, View history, or More. Learn more. [2]

Local communities may want to discuss and propose changes to their local settings. Details about each of the named settings can be found by searching MediaWiki.org. [3]
- The Anti-Harassment Tools team recently deployed the IP Info Feature as a Beta Feature at all wikis. This feature allows abuse fighters to access information about IP addresses. Please check our update on how to find and use the tool. Please share your feedback using a link you will be given within the tool itself.

Tranny lead
Could you explain what u meant by your change to the tranny article please? I didn't understand what you meant.
Also I'm a trans woman so I can use this word 78.149.121.207 (talk) 04:54, 13 July 2022 (UTC)
- The article said:
- "whether the term was a pejorative, or was still considered acceptable, or a reappropriated term of unity and pride."
- so that is three choices (reappropriated, acceptable, pejorative). You changed it to:
- "whether the term was a reappropriated term of unity and pride."
- That's only two choices (it is, or it isn't). So if it is not reappropriation, your wording removed the idea that it could still be one of two alternatives (acceptable or pejorative) rather than just "not reappropriation". DMacks (talk) 06:01, 13 July 2022 (UTC)

Double bond rule--what a coincidence!
I was JUST looking at the article on Double Bond Rule, and reminding myself that last January I posted a question on the talk page. It seemed to me that something there contradicted itself. It seems that nobody noticed the question, and I was about to take it to the chemistry project. But I was looking around on line, first.
While I was looking, you changed it!
By the way, looking around on line, I found that the statement here in Wikipedia has been copied many times. Uporządnicki (talk) 22:14, 17 September 2022 (UTC)
- Ha! I don't think that page has many people watching it. Indeed WP gets copied without attribution all over the place. I'm always amazed when those copies include typos or even transient vandalism that the copier didn't notice. DMacks (talk) 22:17, 17 September 2022 (UTC)
- Well, so now I'm curious. Was it just an incredible coincidence that you happened to come along and correct it just when I was recontemplating it months later? Or did I do something that somehow brought it to your attention? Uporządnicki (talk) 01:49, 18 September 2022 (UTC)

Thank you
Thank you for taking care of the anisidine issues. The IP editor that I was chiding or cautioning seems well-intentioned but edits are generally generic at best (linking "used") or just squirrelly (inventing references). Nothing evil. That way you can decide how to use it (or you can decide not to use it, if it does not allow you to do what you are trying to do). Please see WP:YFA. Or try a wikipedia in a different language (for example, we have [fa.wikipedia.org] if Farsi/Persian is more comfortable for you). DMacks (talk) 06:58, 29 September 2022 (UTC)
Administrators' newsletter – October 2022
News and updates for administrators from the past month (September 2022).
- Following an RfC, consensus was found that if the rationale for a block depends on information that is not available to all administrators, that information should be sent to the Arbitration Committee, a checkuser or an oversighter for action (as applicable, per ArbCom's recent updated guidance) instead of the administrator making the block.
- Following an RfC, consensus has been found that, in the context of politics and science, the reliability of FoxNews.com is unclear and that additional considerations apply to its use.
- Community comment on the revised Universal Code of Conduct enforcement guidelines is requested until 8 October.
- The Articles for creation helper script now automatically recognises administrator accounts which means your name does not need to be listed at WP:AFCP to help out. If you wish to help out at AFC, enable AFCH by navigating to Preferences → Gadgets and checking the "Yet Another AfC Helper Script" box.
- Remedy 8.1 of the Muhammad images case will be rescinded 1 November following a motion.
- A modification to the deletion RfC remedy in the Conduct in deletion-related editing case has been made to reaffirm the independence of the RfC and allow the moderators to split the RfC in two.
- The second phase of the 2021-22 Discretionary Sanctions Review closes 3 October.
- An administrator's account was recently compromised. Administrators are encouraged to check that their passwords are secure, and reminded that ArbCom reserves the right to not restore adminship in cases of poor account security. You can also use two-factor authentication (2FA) to provide an extra level of security.
- Self-nominations for the electoral commission for the 2022 Arbitration Committee elections open 2 October and close 8 October.
- You are invited to comment on candidates in the 2022 CUOS appointments process.
- An RfC is open to discuss whether to make Vector 2022 the default skin on desktop.
- Tech tip: You can do a fuzzy search of all deleted page titles at Special:Undelete.

- This is the English Wikipedia. We have no control over other language wiki sites. I'm not seeing any evidence of bad edits from User:SCP-2000 on enwiki. And if m:Talk:Steward_requests/Global#Global_lock_for_Cheng123xx,_sock_puppet happens, then we don't need to block. And if it doesn't happen, then there's no clear basis for blocking here. - The Coolest Tool Award 2022 is looking for nominations. You can recommend tools until 12 October.
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 4 October. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 5 October. It will be on all wikis from 6 October (calendar).
- Talk pages on the mobile site will change at the Arabic, Bangla, Chinese, French, Haitian Creole, Hebrew, Korean, and Vietnamese Wikipedias. They should be easier to use and provide more information. (Last week's release was delayed) [32] [33]
- The
scribunto-console
API module will require a CSRF token. This module is documented as internal and use of it is not supported. [5] - The Vector 2022 skin will become the default across the smallest Wikimedia projects. Learn more.

Editor you warned
[34]. Their edits may not be all disruptive, but they keep making edits like [35][36] which are, not sure if it's over the line. The story of these people is told differently in Diriliş: Ertuğrul, that may have something to do with it. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 13:48, 29 September 2022 (UTC)

- Thanks for the heads-up. I don't know the details of this topic. However, I blocked them 31h for repeating to make edits that contradict cited refs in BLP articles (various birthdates). DMacks (talk) 14:10, 29 September 2022 (UTC)
- And thank you. Primer: Take the titular character Ertuğrul from the series that bears his name. For those who don’t know, Ertuğrul was the father of Osman I, the founder of the Ottoman Dynasty – and that is all historians are able to say about him with certainty. Everything else is shrouded in mystery. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 16:43, 29 September 2022 (UTC)
- Keeps making edits like [37], that is not the DOB in the source, which seems ok. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 11:31, 7 October 2022 (UTC)
- Level4-warned. The impending block will be indef. DMacks (talk) 18:40, 7 October 2022 (UTC)
- Meh, I went with just a month. DMacks (talk) 20:45, 7 October 2022 (UTC)

Chemistry edits by Ranjit41771
Something interesting about these edits – in addition to having comically undue weight and likely pushing a COI – is that they are also being published as "minor edits". One can choose to interpret this as an honest mistake or less generously as an attempt to cover up COI editing from page watchers, but given 1) this option isn't checked by default and 2) they chose not to use this on their talk page edit, I suspect the latter. TheTechnician27 (Talk page) 08:50, 13 October 2022 (UTC)
- Good observation about the 'minor' option. While they did eventually respond on their talkpage, even WP:AGF (though I obviously share your suspicions) the content is inappropriate. DMacks (talk) 16:47, 15 October 2022 (UTC)

Bollywood Hungama
Bollywood Hungama is poor source for you Lamo Robertkiyosakii (talk) 16:18, 18 October 2022 (UTC)
- It's a source, that is cited. Therefore it's better than nothing or just what a WP editor claims to have heard. And it's obviously bad form to contradict a cited ref or remove a ref and replace it with nothing just because you don't like it. How does Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Noticeboard or the various India/Film task-forces feel about it? DMacks (talk) 16:28, 18 October 2022 (UTC)
