Please fix

[edit]

Hello, I see that you are speedily removing the category "Japanese vegetables." However, as you have done in the past, you are doing so in an automated manner, and without much thought, i.e. you have not replaced the category with the "Japanese cuisine" category. Please go back and do so, thanks. Badagnani 04:03, 1 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I see you have done the same for "Chinese vegetables"; you've removed the cats without replacing with "Chinese cuisine." This is again a poor manner of editing, and a waste of bandwidth (and your time), because you have to now go back and replace them. Please try to give these kinds of massive edits some thought before doing them because it can ruin a lot of hard work and make navigation for those interested in Asian cuisine very, very difficult, thanks. Badagnani 04:06, 1 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It's very perplexing that you continue on doing other projects rather than addressing this. I see that you have also removed the category "Japanese sea vegetables" and not replaced it, as a normal non-automated editor would do as a matter of course, with the category "Sea vegetables." Again, your automated version of editing creates havoc for those of us who try to maintain cuisine articles. I hope by your failure to respond to these problems you've caused that you don't expect those of us who have created and maintain these articles to sweep up behind you for these dozens, if not hundreds of articles. That's just not right. Badagnani 04:12, 1 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Please see here. It was decided by the closing admin not to replace the deleted categories with anything else. --Cyde Weys 04:12, 1 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

What you are doing is unacceptable. You cannot expect editors who work on cuisine articles to sweep up after you. Please fix what you have broken first, rather than moving on to other projects. It does not make logical sense to not replace the Chinese vegetables cat with a "Chinese cuisine" cat, the same with the "Japanese vegetables" cat and the "Japanese sea vegetables" cat with "Sea vegetables." Please fix this immediately. Badagnani 04:14, 1 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Do you know how the CFD process works? You're complaining to the wrong person right now. --Cyde Weys 04:19, 1 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I do. I also know that what you are doing is extremely improper, and is going to create dozens of hours of needless work on the part of those of us who must now--by hand--go through and replace all the Chinese and Japanese vegetables into the "Chinese cuisine" and "Japanese cuisine" categories. You should not have done what you did and you need to rectify this situation immediately. You simply cannot sweep through hundreds of articles in such a manner and add so much needless labor to other editors' workloads. Badagnani 04:23, 1 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You seem to be continuing to have your bot do other edits while the huge chaos you've created in the Asian cuisine articles remains. Please take care of repairing the damage you've done first, before moving on to other projects. It would be greatly appreciated by those of us who attempt to maintain Asian cuisine articles, and who do not have access to bots. Many thanks. Badagnani 04:33, 1 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Not an ideal approach

[edit]

There does not seem to have been any actual discussion of the proposed upmerger(s) of templates. I personally have a particular interest in {{non-free govt-logo}} (formerly {{govt-logo}}), and believe that it clearly conveys important information about the nature of any fair use claim for such content. Before making mass automated runs of this sort, it would be greatly appreciated if you would seek a bit more community input. If there has been such input and I have simply missed it, please accept my apologies. Thanks for your work in helping to keep Wikipedia free. Cheers, -- Visviva 07:08, 1 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

1,000,000th edit party?

[edit]

Are you planning for your impending 1,000,000th edit party? Can we run a sweepstake on when you will get there? :-) Carcharoth 15:06, 15 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed your bot was renaming this. However I ask you to stop because the template not only added categorization, it added essential info on the copyright holder. This change doesn't appear to be discussed on the page you link to in the edit summary. -N 02:15, 20 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Recategorisation

[edit]

Hi. Before turning your bot loose, could you please ensure that any categories to which it is reasigning articles actually exist first? You seem to be putting the cart before the horse. Pyrope 17:07, 22 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Why are people complaining about this? This is how pyWikipediabot works. It moves the articles over and then the category text. That's the way it's always been and there are significant reasons against modifying this functionality — so get used to it? --Cyde Weys 14:24, 20 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Bots should think

[edit]

Instead of retagging all Scoutlogo tags with "Non-free logo" why didn't you rename scoutlogo "non-free scoutlogo" or even better put a notice on that template's talk page first so we'd know what was going on and you wouldn't create a mess?? Rlevse 11:42, 20 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

We don't need a separate template for Scouting logos. They're still just logos, and are governed by all of the same kinds of restrictions against use of non-free content. --Cyde Weys 14:25, 20 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with the restrictions- that is not the issue; it would appear that no one actually looked at {{Scoutlogo}}. It would have been apparent (it is documented on the page) that the template used parameters to place logos into proper categories for ease of management. When {{Scoutlogo|BSAMB}} was changed to {{Non-free logo|BSAMB}}, it added a category called BSAMB (the redlink there should have been an alert) and removed it from Category:Boy Scouts of America merit badges. If we had been forewarned on the talk page, we would have understood what was going on and checked to see what was needed to make this work properly. I know we can't be the only ones using a template in this manner, since it was copied from a template in the Military History project. We have renamed the template to {{Non-free Scoutlogo}} and updated the included categories. Now we are reworking the hundreds of images to get them back into the proper categories. --Gadget850 ( Ed) 17:25, 20 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Confusion concerning Image:EvansCountySeal.jpg

[edit]

Recently, Cydebot switched the tag for Image:EvansCountySeal.jpg from Seal to non-free logo. I have since checked the Wikipedia:Non-free content/templates page and, though I do see Seal mentioned, I do not see any mention of it being done away with and changed to non-free logo. Furthermore, the definitions for each are:

Seal - This logo is an official seal of a government or one of its government agencies, and may be subject to copyright, trademark, and/or other restrictions on its reproduction, especially in commercial contexts. The copyright is likely held by the government or agency in question. It is believed that the use of images of seals.

Logo - This is a logo of an organization, item, or event, and is protected by copyright and/or trademark.

The Evans County seal image is obviously the official seal of a (local) government and not a "logo of an organization, item or event". Is there a change in the status of the logos Seal and non-free logo that I'm not seeing? If so, could you explain it to me, please. If not, I think the tag should go back to Seal as it is, in my opinion, the correct one. Thanks in advance. Reb 12:24, 20 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Governments are organizations. Anyway, just modify the text of {{Non-free logo}} to make it more inclusive. A lot of non-free content tags are being upmerged because they merely talk about different kinds of content, while not actually dealing with any different kind of non-free content use. --Cyde Weys 14:30, 20 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Super Mario Bros. 2 Japan ending.png. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Ejfetters 04:58, 30 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Cydebot! Are you sure all these people are from the state of Rio? Lulu Margarida yes? 15:49, 25 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Category:The Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers episodes, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Category:The Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers episodes has been empty for at least four days, and its only content has been links to parent categories. (CSD C1).

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Category:The Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers episodes, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. Hello, I see that you are speedily removing the category "Korean fruits." However, as you have done in the past, you are doing so in an automated manner, and without much thought, i.e. you have not replaced the category with the "Korean ingredients" category, as really does need to be done so our users are able to navigate properly ("Korean fruits" was a subcat of "Korean ingredients." Redundant categories

[edit]

Your bot moved a category to an already extant category. See this diff Raul654 (talk) 19:42, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know what the recent change is about but the latest edits have contributed to the nonsense in this article (see talk page). Because of the wide coloniisation of Australia by the English, the majority of Australians are at least in part of English descent. Even thhe mmajority of Aboriginal Australians are probably in part of English descent.

However, the article now lists Australians of English descent, not as a subcategory of Australians, but as a separate ethnic group from Australians of unknown descennt??!! What absolute nonsense!

The thing that defines nationality in most Australians of British descent (and Dutch and German descent) is where they were born. If they were born in Australia or migrated as children, they almost never call themselves English/Irish//Dutch etc Australians. They simply call themselves Australians. English Australians are people who were born in England, not people like me whose family opened a biscuit factory to feed the gold miners in 1851, ran a hay and corn store in 1901 and built Warragamba Dam in 1951. I am certainly English by descent, as well as Irish, Scottish, Dutch and Spanish. Australians of other ethnic backgrounds (Italian, Greek, Turkish, Macedonian, Croatian, Chinese, Vietnamese) are more likely to identify as Somethingorother-Australian, eg ABC (Australian-born Chinese).

Whoever you are, behind this bot, this stuff needs fixing!

Merging cats

[edit]

Hi Cyde(bot). I noticed that when merging categories, if an article already has the old and the new category, after the merge it has the new category twice. While this works perfectly, it is of course not needed in any way and creates a bit of clutter. Would it be possible to change the bot so that if the target category of a merge is already present in the article, the bot just removes the deprecated category instead of creating a duplicate of the correct one? An example is here, where the new category Category:Comet discoverers was already present in the article. Fram (talk) 06:54, 9 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

This edit: [2]. —Ashley Y 11:51, 13 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yet another one: [3] (fixed). There is more.
Ideally one should script Special:Contributions a bit and compile a list of edits that increased article size about twofold. I don't know how to do it in a reasonable amount of time (no decent knowledge of Perl etc).
In a few checked cases, Legobot tried the same adjustment a bit later, succeeded and therefore disabled the undo feature. So if there is a list of known failure URLs, I could find a hour or so to help fixing those manually. saimhe (talk) 11:28, 15 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Please see here. It was a bug in MediaWiki, not Cydebot necessarily, and it was fixed quickly. If there are any remaining bugged edits, please fix them. The fix is easy — just remove the duplicate sections. --Cyde Weys 14:15, 28 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Needless and misunderstood ESPN College Football category removal

[edit]

The category that you just recently had removed only featured the various college football related programs on ESPN, the list of personalities, and notable Bowl games that they broadcast. You're still going by the critiera of individual announcers being listed in the category. TMC1982 (talk) 11:24 p.m., 30 December 2008 (UTC)

Polish Americans category is better than americans of polish descent

[edit]

Hello friend, can you say me please, why you make the category Polish Americans to Americans of Polish descent?? Please look, there are Polish people who are born in Poland, and emigrated to USA so they are Polish Americans, and there are Americans OF polish descent, so there are two big differences, so they should be two categories, Polish Americans and Americans of polish descent ,and not only Americans of polish descent, please make two categories with Polish Americans.

Sorry for my bad english, I hope you understand me and answer me - Thank you
