Edits to Elihu Yale page
[edit]Cyde, I'm not 100% sure if this is the right way to do this so please point me in the right direction if there is a better way...
I filed a Dispute Resolution Request to deal with the continuing and repetitive edits that various users have made to Elihu Yale's nationality. He was an Englishman. America had not been established and nor had Britain - so he could not be "American" nor "British". As precedent, Wikipedia shows Wentworth Miller ( https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Wentworth_Miller ), who was born in the UK but obviously from an American family and living in America, as "American".
One edit was listed as coming from Cydebot - hence this notification.
Thank you. -Kim 99.4.120.135 (talk) 22:44, 8 November 2016 (UTC)
Mistakes by Cydebot while moving categories
[edit]Hi Cyde, I found a series of errors when Cydebot moved pages from "Category:Roman Catholic Church in **continent** " to "Category:Catholic Church in Africa" (beginning edit, ending edit). The Discoverer (talk) 14:36, 8 November 2016 (UTC)
- @The Discoverer, Tavix, and BU Rob13: Oh dear. CydeBot was only doing what it was told, see [1] and Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2016 October 29. I'll get the category pages moved. One of us will then have to use Cat-a lot to split the countries out of Africa. – Fayenatic London 16:09, 8 November 2016 (UTC)
- @Fayenatic london: What about using mass rollback and then just letting the bot run again? I could do that. ~ Rob13Talk 16:11, 8 November 2016 (UTC)
- What is mass rollback? Is that what I asked for over several months at WP:Bot requests, receiving no response, following which I did 3,000 manual edits to reinstate categories on biographies by year BC? – Fayenatic London 16:31, 8 November 2016 (UTC)
- Ack! My apologies, everyone. That is why you triple check your nomination. BU Rob13, if you could mass rollback, that'd be great! Otherwise, I'll volunteer to do the clean-up. I'm already planning on going the whole category tree to figure out what needs to be moved still. -- Tavix (talk) 17:08, 8 November 2016 (UTC)
- @Fayenatic london: That thread was so long I didn't read all parts of it, so sorry if I missed a part that inadvertently caused you more work. Mass rollback is a script that lets you rollback every edit on a current page of contributions. It wouldn't work for undeleting pages, which is what I thought the entirety of that BC thread was about. ~ Rob13Talk 17:12, 8 November 2016 (UTC)
- I was always afraid that user:Francis Schonken had made the request at BC_births_and_deaths_categorizations so long and convoluted that bot operators would miss the points; that was why I sub-divided it, and also posted Bot_needed_to_reverse_contributions. Despite those efforts, nobody ever suggested mass rollback. It could have helped, but only if it had been suggested early. By the time I did the manual work, it was too late for rollback in most cases, so without a bot to reverse contribs, there was no other option. I don't regret it; I left the categories more accurately populated than they had been originally, and learned a thing or two on the way. – Fayenatic London 21:15, 8 November 2016 (UTC)
- Tx for pinging – as I always thought there was a bot solution. Tx Fayenatic for solving the BC cats nonetheless. --Francis Schonken (talk) 06:33, 9 November 2016 (UTC)

- @Tavix: Alright, mass rollback has done as much as it can. Any categories/articles with intermediate edits won't be rolled back and the mass rollback would have "brought back" the CfD notice on the categories that were subcategories of each of the continents. So, basically, a thorough once-over is needed. I'll try to mobilize AWB to remove all those extra CfD notices. If you could, please focus on doing a once-over of the categories once Cydebot finishes doing its thing. ~ Rob13Talk 17:24, 8 November 2016 (UTC)

Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins
[edit]Hello,
Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. A new user right for New Page Patrollers
[edit]Hi Cyde.
A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.
It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.
If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:47, 15 November 2016 (UTC)
ArbCom Elections 2016: Voting now open!
[edit]Hello, Cyde. Voting in the 2016 Arbitration Committee elections is open from Monday, 00:00, 21 November through Sunday, 23:59, 4 December to all unblocked users who have registered an account before Wednesday, 00:00, 28 October 2016 and have made at least 150 mainspace edits before Sunday, 00:00, 1 November 2016.
The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
If you wish to participate in the 2016 election, please review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Mdann52 (talk) 22:08, 21 November 2016 (UTC)

Hey, You might want to check on wherever Cydebot is running. It seems to be making many login attempts, and failing. As of writing, it is currently blocked from logging in for 2 days... Recategorisation of ChildLine
[edit]ChildLine is not a 'crisis helpline' so Robot - Speedily moving category Helplines to Category:Crisis hotlines per CFDS. is incorrect. ChildLine is a free 24-hour counselling service for children and young people, ie it is available to those who are not in crisis, though that may be the case. Shipsview (talk) 14:08, 30 November 2016 (UTC)
- Hi, @Shipsview: this category was nominated by RevelationDirect, here:[2]. The nomination was unopposed, and the rationale was valid for speedy renaming under WP:C2D, so I processed it.
- If you think the title Crisis hotline is not the best one, please follow the method at WP:RM to open a discussion on moving it to a better name. – Fayenatic London 23:41, 2 December 2016 (UTC)
Visitor attractions in Leicestershire
[edit]Please don't allow your bot to edit war:
https://wiki.riteme.site/w/index.php?title=Stoney_Cove&action=history&offset=20161210
I understand that Category:Visitor attractions in Leicestershire is to be deleted because of a deletion decision. That's up to the folks who take part in these sort of deliberations. However, although Stoney Cove, a flooded quarry used by scuba divers from many parts of the country, could be described as a "visitor attraction", there's no way it could be considered a "tourist attraction". Your bot is unfortunately working on the assumption that the two terms are interchangeable. Clearly they are not. --RexxS (talk) 21:22, 10 December 2016 (UTC)

Your bot is performing an unapproved task

I checked WP:BRFA and your bot isn't approved for edits like those. The edits will have to be reverted and your bot has to learn to ignore userspace. Please do not run unapproved bot tasks. You can delete the categories, but you are not allowed to remove links to those cats in userspace. I also noticed that your bot is in the hidden category Active Wikipedia bots with no specified BRFA, please fix that. (((The Quixotic Potato))) (talk) 23:09, 27 January 2017 (UTC)

- BAG approval for a different task. But not community consensus for the one I am complaining about. Please stop making these pointless and annoying edits, they are worse than cosmetic edits (which are explicitly disallowed). If you do not then I'll probably have to start an RfC or something. Speedy deletion nomination of Template:Rotartsinimda
[edit]If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on Template:Rotartsinimda, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to have no meaningful content or history, and the text is unsalvageably incoherent. If the page you created was a test, please use the sandbox for any other experiments you would like to do.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. - CHAMPION (talk) (contributions) (logs) 23:47, 13 March 2017 (UTC)

Wm A. Connelly deletion
[edit]I am not knowledgeable about bots, nor really an expert on army service awards and ribbons, but Cydebot may have made a mistake. Or I may be all wet.
Cydebot removed category: recipient of bronze star, William A. Connelly, Sergeant Major of the Army. It looks like Connelly did receive the award, so is the category just being eliminated throughout Wikipedia? I don't use the categories feature much, and well may be missing subtleties here. Cats seem to be perpetually being modified, added or eliminated, so I usually don't pay much attention. I was looking at another problem with the article, studying the history, and Cydebot's edit is the most recent edit to the article. I'm sure you have more important things to do, but maybe if you have a moment, you can take a look. rags (talk) 19:21, 9 May 2017 (UTC)
