IABot bug
(Apologies, I don't have the patience to create a bug reporting account) The bot is automatically formatting Webcitation urls as if they were from Wayback Machine, i.e. appending the source url as a query string to the end of the existing archive url (e.g. http://www.webcitation.org/6pZezKWd5?url=http://www.dailynews.com/sports/20170305/whicker-ucla-freshman-ike-anigbogu-is-the-last-line-of-defense) See https://wiki.riteme.site/w/index.php?title=Ike_Anigbogu&diff=774554711&oldid=774540788. Regards.—Bagumba (talk) 12:12, 9 April 2017 (UTC)
- It's not a bug. It's enforcing policy.—CYBERPOWER (Chat) 12:14, 9 April 2017 (UTC)
- Just curious, what does appending the source url provide in this case? The previous archiveurl seemed to be working just fine. Thanks.—Bagumba (talk) 12:29, 9 April 2017 (UTC)
- All archive URLs are required to be in long form. That means the snapshot timestamp and url should be extractable from the URL itself and not have to resort to loading the archive to figure it out.—CYBERPOWER (Chat) 12:31, 9 April 2017 (UTC)
- Got it. However, it appears the long format Webcitation returns has a base of http://www.webcitation.org/query (e.g. http://www.webcitation.org/query?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.latimes.com%2Fsports%2Fucla%2Fla-sp-ucla-anigbogu-nba-20170405-story.html&date=2017-04-09) as opposed to just the short form with url appended (e.g. http://www.webcitation.org/6pawGoxFH?url=http://www.latimes.com/sports/ucla/la-sp-ucla-anigbogu-nba-20170405-story.html). No problem if bot is simplified by design. Cheers.—Bagumba (talk) 12:45, 9 April 2017 (UTC)

Cyberbot I Book Report update error?
On Book talk:Marvel Cinematic Universe, the bot is marking the article Yes Men (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) as "unassessed" when it has been marked as a "C" article at Talk:Yes Men (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.). I double checked the article link formatting in the book proper and can't see anything wrong. Am I missing something that's preventing the bot from seeing the assessment of the article? - Favre1fan93 (talk) 16:35, 11 April 2017 (UTC)

Internetarchivebot
I am posting this comment here because I don't have a bug reporting account. The internetarchivebot recently modified the article "gotcha (programming)", replacing the '+' characters in a external link URL address with '%20', which broke the link. Is it supposed to do that? Michael9422 (talk) 19:52, 13 April 2017 (UTC)
- See also Phab T162722. Also, WaybackMedic fix #24 will fix them but no guarantee it can find them all. -- GreenC 22:02, 13 April 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks. I skimmed through the material at those links, but the situation is not clear to me. I reverted the change that the InternetArchiveBot made to the article "gotcha (programming)", which fixed the external link URL. That is all I intended to do aside from alert someone in charge that the bot seems to have a problem. I don't really understand what the purpose of the bots change from '+' to '%20' is supposed to accomplish, but perhaps the bot could be reprogrammed to recognize that two consecutive pluses '++' should not be modified. Michael9422 (talk) 01:00, 14 April 2017 (UTC)
- I have perhaps asked this before. But does the bot in question also detect dead links on its own and archive them? Or do it only archive articles with the dead link-tag already in it?--BabbaQ (talk) 14:11, 15 April 2017 (UTC)
- Yes it does.—CYBERPOWER (Chat) 14:11, 15 April 2017 (UTC)

InternetArchiveBot on nlwiki and support for archive.is
Hi Cyberpower678,
Regarding your statement on the Dutch Wikipedia, I would like to clarify things with you further. From my understanding, you simply don't support archive.is because there is no API for it? What if I would write an API for it and host it somewhere? Would you make use of it?
Also, where can I find the sources (code) for your bot?
Kind regards, Smile4ever (talk) 17:26, 20 April 2017 (UTC)
- IABot doesn't use it since it's too difficult to tell good archives from bad, since a lot of data is stripped. This makes it more prone to error. It does acknowledge the use of archive.is and will use it if found associated with a URL on Wikipedia. I'm not sure you writing an API would do much good unless you own the archive.is service.—CYBERPOWER (Chat) 17:36, 20 April 2017 (UTC)
- Hi. I don't own archive.is, but what data is stripped/missing exactly? Kind regards, Smile4ever (talk) 17:48, 20 April 2017 (UTC)
- Site headers. Without those the bot is very easily going to deliver a lot of 404 archives.—CYBERPOWER (Chat) 17:49, 20 April 2017 (UTC)
- I understand, but I'm sure this can be worked around by writing proper 404 detection. This is something that my API could do for you. I already (partially) do this in Get Archive too, and I catch most 404s without headers. Can I find your code somewhere? Kind regards, Smile4ever (talk) 17:53, 20 April 2017 (UTC)
- Here you go. Keep in mind speed is an important factor. I don't like communicating with APIs that take long to respond. By long, I mean longer than .5 seconds, unless I'm feeding it a large query.—CYBERPOWER (Chat) 17:57, 20 April 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks, I'll think about it. Kind regards, Smile4ever (talk) 18:09, 20 April 2017 (UTC)

Smile4ever, I wrote a soft404 detector for Archive.is .. for my bot WaybackMedic .. building a soft404 detector is both easy and hard. It's easy because all you do is search pages for "page not found" etc.. it's hard because it can be worded 1000 different in 1000 different languages (Portuguese? Catalan? etc) And determining blank page content only took me an entire day to figure out :) Not to mention redirects and other issues. It's still far from complete so I don't use the pages until they are manually verified (built into the bot process). It's not something to do in only a few days, it needs constant monitoring. -- GreenC 18:55, 20 April 2017 (UTC)
- And this is the reason I never bothered with soft 404 checkers. I appreciate the work you do GreenC. :-)—CYBERPOWER (Around) 19:01, 20 April 2017 (UTC)

InternetArchiveBot – extra space
Hi! You add an extra unnecessary space before the archive date when the day of month is less than ten. Compare this with this. Svensson1 (talk) 22:51, 21 April 2017 (UTC)
- Unfortunately this is an issue with PHP. Fortunately, it has no impact on how the template is rendered.—CYBERPOWER (Message) 23:59, 21 April 2017 (UTC)

InternetArchiveBot – creating invalid dates
Hi, there appears to be a BOT problem when changing the |archivedate=
parameter it is putting a $e in place of the day such as in this edit. Keith D (talk) 23:32, 22 April 2017 (UTC)
- It's an old bug, that is already fixed in the current version.—CYBERPOWER (Message) 23:34, 22 April 2017 (UTC)
- Any plans to correct all of those in error? Keith D (talk) 21:55, 23 April 2017 (UTC)
- The issue was discovered almost immediately and fixed immediately after it was reported. I don't think there were many more, if any, articles that had the bug. @Green Cardamom: just in case, any chance you can have WaybackMedic analyze the bot's edits from v1.3beta6? GreenC possesses the tools to do this kind of work more efficiently than I do.—CYBERPOWER (Message) 00:08, 24 April 2017 (UTC)
- Yes WaybackMedic already fixed some. It doesn't need new code since it detects a date that doesn't match the URL and replaces with the URL date. Medic checks articles edited by IABot so it will get to them. The set of articles from September -> February is taking forever because I keep adding new features and redoing, but it will get to v1.3beta6 in the next few weeks. -- GreenC 02:16, 24 April 2017 (UTC)

- All we need here is a better error message taking into account it might be a bot error. Something like:
- NeilN is not an administrator or an account creator. Therefore they have been disallowed the use of adminstats.
- Alternatively, the bot responsible for generating adminstats might have encountered an error.

- I would like to suggest that the error message needs to be toned down a lot more. Instead of saying, "[Name] is not an administrator or an account creator. Therefore they have been disallowed the use of adminstats", it should say, "Adminstats are not available for [Name]." It's presumptuous to have a bot declare that a user is not an admin just because the bot is not working properly. While the bot is working correctly now, it has declared me a non-admin for 4 of the last 8 days. --Metropolitan90 (talk) 15:05, 28 April 2017 (UTC)
regarding Cyberbot I
When it runs comments on WP:Requests for page protection, such as "Automated comment: One or more pages in this request appear to already be protected. Please confirm." Will the bot search the associated page and ping back the admins regarding said actions? Because I thought it might be more effective it it left notes on admin talk pages for say said actions an admin done with regards to the rpp page. Cheers. Govvy (talk) 12:29, 29 April 2017 (UTC)

Hey, thanks for this tool! Any chance we'll be able to use it to add archiveurls to {{cite web}}s in the future? czar 07:50, 3 May 2017 (UTC)
- Doesn't it already? I'm confused by what you're asking.—CYBERPOWER (Chat) 11:48, 3 May 2017 (UTC)
- My understanding is that the bot (1) adds archive links when the original link is dead, and (2) modifies existing links to match a specific format. The practice we should be encouraging, though, are editors adding
|archiveurl=
while the links are still live (to ensure that the content is preserved). Rather than adding these|archiveurl=
s to 100 {{cite web}} templates by hand, a semi-automated tool could help add those parameters to those templates in specific articles. I haven't seen a way to do this from the current tool options. czar 17:27, 3 May 2017 (UTC)- I can certainly add that option, but it won't just be citation templates, but everything being used as a source.—CYBERPOWER (Around) 20:10, 3 May 2017 (UTC)
- There is a program that monitors new links added to Wikipedia and saves a copy to Wayback. -- GreenC 21:30, 3 May 2017 (UTC)
- Yes, that would be great. I'm aware of the existing programs, but the unsolved issue is the time editors must take to preemptively check and add archive links ...which can take hours on long articles and could be semi-automated through the new tool's interface. czar 16:09, 4 May 2017 (UTC)
- I can certainly add that feature as an option, but since the edit is made from your account, be ready to be responsible for it. The function will add archive URLs to everything, not just cite templates.—CYBERPOWER (Chat) 16:13, 4 May 2017 (UTC)
- @Czar: This edit demonstrates the feature you asked for, enabled. With it disabled, it won't touch this page since none are dead. I'll release it in the final release.—CYBERPOWER (Chat) 17:49, 4 May 2017 (UTC)
- Works for me—can't wait to get my hands on it. Happy to help test it too, if you're interested. When is the final release expected? Two notes on that test edit: (1) It converted the external link when it wasn't dead—any way to exclude those not in reference tags (or otherwise, the links in the External links section)? (2) It'd be nice to have the option to only apply the bot to CS1 templates because {{webcitation}}, for now, doesn't look so hot in the handwritten citations. Either way, won't be a problem for me, since I only use CS1 templates, but I expect others to request it down the line. Anyone writing original content is going to use this tool all the time. czar 19:41, 4 May 2017 (UTC)
- @Czar: I'm about to deploy the final release. I've worked just about every bug I can find, cleaned up the DB and added some new functions. The pull request into my master branch is enormous. I've long waited for this moment. It's about to happen, and right after that, IABot v1.4 will be in the works.—CYBERPOWER (Around) 19:57, 4 May 2017 (UTC)

- Agree about initially limiting this feature to CS1|2 since it has the
|deadurl=no
which can assert the link is not dead.
- czar, I'm the author of
{{webarchive}}
. The display was meant to mirror the old{{wayback}}

- Congrats and thank you! It's beautiful: [4]. Would you prefer suggestions here or in the bug tracker? It might be good to link #IABot to an on-wiki page so editors reading the page history can learn about it. A link to the edit would also be useful so that editors can check the results. @Green Cardamom, I don't see it as a slight on the template—I think it'd be hard to automate any similar template's placement within a handwritten citation unless the bot does some kind of citation syntax detection. Though if I had to stick it somewhere in a handwritten citation, I'd sooner put it at the end of the citation sentence/tag rather than right after the URL. czar 21:58, 4 May 2017 (UTC)
- Can I suggest a change from "Add archives to all URLs" -> "Add archives to all URLs even if the URL is live" to make it clear what is being done. And the "Restrict to references" be a sub-element (indented ) of the previous option. I don't think that second option is a good idea though, it should only be for references. What situation would one set every external link to an archive link? It will break intended content because it now points to the archive site and not the live link. It definitely will upset some people, and users will do it without thinking or checking the bots work. -- GreenC 22:59, 4 May 2017 (UTC)

IABot possible issue
Hey there. I've by-chance was looking at IABot's almost month old report for an edit on India and found something odd. This is the edit: Besides all four links not being dead, the last two ones which it labelled as "Corrected formatting/usage" duplicated the url parameters (also what's with the "?" at the end?). Is this an issue? Btw I was going to report those links as false positives in that dashboard thingy but it says it's down for maintenance. Ugog Nizdast (talk) 01:42, 4 May 2017 (UTC)
- No technical issue here. It simply converted the archive URLs to long form per policy. As for them being false positives. The script should be done in a few hours. The tool will reactivate when it finishes.—CYBERPOWER (Message) 01:54, 4 May 2017 (UTC)
- Ah I see now. It's part of the Webcitation url structure which I mistook for the duplicate parameter. I'll get to it once it's ready. Ugog Nizdast (talk) 02:14, 4 May 2017 (UTC)
- Where is the policy on longform WebCite URLs? (I've wondered about this myself) czar 00:57, 5 May 2017 (UTC)
Dead link in English - Same link works in French
I am not much of a techie, so I hope you will be patient with me for asking you this directly On the English page John Edmund Strandberg you indicated that under references # 2 : Whitchurch-Stouffville News Paper Index John Edmund Strandberg, that the link is dead, and that is correct. However, I noticed that when checking the French version of the same article, that the same link to the same newspaper article does work. How is that possible? And how fix the link on the English side? Keennoi (talk) 21:02, 5 May 2017 (UTC)
- I don't know. You'd have to ask the server admin of that page.—CYBERPOWER (Around) 21:22, 5 May 2017 (UTC)
- Keennoi, the link on the English page is malformed with extra characters appended (%20Whitchurch-Stouffville%20News%20Paper%20Index). Edit the page, if you wish, to delete these characters and the link will work. There are also archive links for the page available, such as this one: [5] from 2016. -- Ham105 (talk) 21:33, 5 May 2017 (UTC)
Changing username, bot acting up
Dear Cyberpower678,
please see [6]. For some reason the bot marked a request as done, when it had not been done. Possibly caused by the fact that the user has been renamed in the past, also involving these two names, however in reverse. Although that rename was done by another renamer than the bot is mentioning right now [7]. I have disabled the bot and am putting the request on hold for the moment.

Bot
Hello. I had an idea for a bot, that would move deletion templates to the top of the page. I proposed it on bot requests, but I got 0 responses in approximately 2 months. As I am not a programmer I have no skill in developing the bot, so I would like someone to help me. As I know, you managed to develop InternetArchiveBot, so I decided that you could be the right person to ask in such a case. What do you think of this idea? Cheers, FriyMan talk 09:37, 8 May 2017 (UTC)
- I don't think this should be done without consensus first. Propose at the village pump.—CYBERPOWER (Chat) 11:40, 8 May 2017 (UTC)
IABot putting date in talk headers
Would this be a good idea? Can IABot do this when it posts its reports on article talks pages: Instead of ==External links modified==, a more specific, easy to find and not duplicated header like ==External links modified May 2017==? Ugog Nizdast (talk) 10:31, 8 May 2017 (UTC)
- It's been discussed, and I suggested adding those templates to subst into the configuration page.—CYBERPOWER (Chat) 11:45, 8 May 2017 (UTC)

All the links to rio2016.com are now dead. Is there a way to get the InternetArchiveBot to run over them? Hawkeye7 (talk) 22:02, 8 May 2017 (UTC)

False positive; Internet Archive with Anchor
Please investigate and fix Special:Diff/779286881 so that the bot can cope with working URLs like [8]. —Sladen (talk) 02:26, 8 May 2017 (UTC) PS. the tool at [9] complains with "Reporting error: You need to provide at least one url to action." when trying to report this.

- Cyberpower678, as noted above (Special:Diff/779290410), the reporting tool cannot be used, because the reporting tool is buggy and prevents a report a being made. One possible reason for this is that both the bot, and the reporting tool, both have code that does not recognise URLs containing anchor links. —Sladen (talk) 07:24, 8 May 2017 (UTC)
- Sorry, I missed your PS response. But I'm still missing context here. URL fragments have no bearing on whether the URL works or not. I'm still missing context here.—CYBERPOWER (Chat) 11:39, 8 May 2017 (UTC)
- Cyberpower678. Could we focus on Special:Diff/779286881 first, and try to diagnose what rule caused that edit, and get a fix deployed in the bot codebase first? (When that is done, we can both perhaps re-investigate the reporting tool issue too). —Sladen (talk) 11:45, 8 May 2017 (UTC)

- Click Submit
- Observe that the URL is displayed under These URLs were not found in the DB and will be ignored: …
- Click Submit
- Observe the error message Reporting error: You need to provide at least one url to action.
- Observe that Clicking Submit returns to step 6. (It is not possible to progress past this state).
- Please share if there is an alternative mechanism.
- Ideally the bot should remain disabled until this has been debugged and a patch deployed.

- You're not using the tool correctly. What you're using is a tool to report a false positive URL. False positives are URLs that are mistaken to be dead when they're not. Also you do not disable the bot when it's making thousands of good edits and one bad. There's another tool in that allows you to report a bug. Though, I'm still not clear about the issue you are trying to report. The original URL doesn't have an anchor, so why should the archive?—CYBERPOWER (Chat) 14:52, 8 May 2017 (UTC)
- Cyberpower678. Please give the exact URL of how this should be reported, and the exact example text that will help assist with filing this bug in the bot ruleset, and so getting fixed the handling of anchor links. —Sladen (talk) 14:57, 8 May 2017 (UTC)
- You can report bugs here, but I have no example text to give, as I don't understand the problem. Anchor links have no impact on whether or not the URL works or not, and the original URL has no anchor. If IABot adds an archive it will use the original URLs anchor, and attach it to the archive.—CYBERPOWER (Chat) 15:01, 8 May 2017 (UTC)

- One minor issue with stripping the anchor (though not relevant here because the original URL has no anchor) .. if it's a bare link (not a templated cite) and we need to reverse engineer the URL and convert to archive.is for example (due to wayback not working) it won't be possible because data was lost, since archive.is and others require the full original URL including the anchor. OTOH retaining the anchor probably wouldn't hurt anything and give cases like this where an editor wants an anchor that option. -- GreenC 21:38, 8 May 2017 (UTC)

IABot features
Hello Cyberpower678. An user of the Italian Wiki have just asked if the bot may check specific case like this one or this one. The source is still available online, but just with a slightly new URL (first case: same url structure, different extension .com/.info; second case: different url structure). I know it's a huge work (without a HTTP 302 code) to check things and correspondences using Google, but I remember some anti-copyvio bot with this feature. Thanks for your answer. I will translate it for them. ;) The bot will be approved soon, no doubt about this. I think we may discuss which templates/parameters you need the most... --Lucas (talk) 06:08, 9 May 2017 (UTC)
- And what about this case? The url is just a working redirect from www.cookingclassesinbologna.com to cookingclassesinbologna.com, but the bot reported it as broken. Should we consider this cases as false positives, a bug, or a "it's not a bug it's a feature"? Thanks ;). --Lucas (talk) 07:32, 9 May 2017 (UTC)
- In the event of URLs changing structure and the old not redirecting to the new, the bot can't know that the URL changed and will consider the URL as dead. As for your second question, the bot uses various methods to determine a dead link. One of them is a redirect to root check. However this is a case of a root redirecting to root which is causing an erroneous false positive. So yes that is a false positive.—CYBERPOWER (Chat) 12:37, 9 May 2017 (UTC)
RfA sub templates
Hi, quick question - I noticed Template:RfA/warn wasn't protected, which probably isn't a good idea as anyone could change the text for a picture of something, errr, interesting and give a surprise to the next person starting an RfA. So I've template-editor protected it. However, I noticed Template:RfA was protected anyway - does that make the protection I just applied redundant? I can't think of any reason for the text in that template to change without consensus. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 18:43, 9 May 2017 (UTC)
- (tps comment) There is no *cascade* protection on Template:RfA so your protection of RfA/warn seems worthwhile and is not redundant. Following the same logic you should also protect Template:RfA/doc and Template:RfA/time. EdJohnston (talk) 19:02, 9 May 2017 (UTC)
- I've done the time template; the doc template is less urgent as it's not directly copied to every RfA. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 19:11, 9 May 2017 (UTC)

IABot and tables
Hi Cyberpower, firstly thanks for IABot, a great tool. Could you explain why it wouldn't archive references in a table, e.g. in Grade II* listed buildings in North Somerset ? The Rambling Man (talk) 11:18, 10 May 2017 (UTC)

- Thank you. It looks like a very useful and powerful tool, something that we'd love to embrace at WP:FLC! PresN has even suggested we recommend/mandate it to our nominations, so if you could make it function over those odd tables it'd be perfect. Thanks again for all your work. It seems like the template being used is for autogenerating the URLs in the references. Only the first 5 are actually readable.—CYBERPOWER (Message) 01:22, 11 May 2017 (UTC)
