Welcome to the madhouse; please say hello

Welcome

[edit]

Hi, Crepesuze. This is NOT some automated message...it's from a real person. You can talk to me right now. Welcome to Wikipedia! I noticed you've just joined, and wanted to give you a few tips to get you started. If you have any questions, please talk to us. The tips below should help you to get started. Best of luck!  Chzz  ►  00:38, 25 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

ようこそ
  • You don't need to read anything - anybody can edit; just go to an article and edit it. Be Bold, but please don't put silly stuff in - it will be removed very quickly, and will annoy people.
  • Ask for help. Talk to us live, or edit this page, put {{helpme}} and describe what help you need. Someone will reply very quickly - usually within a few minutes.
  • Edit existing articles, before you make your own. Look at some subjects that you know about, and see if you can make them a bit better. For example, Wikipedia:Cleanup#2009.
  • When you're ready, read about Your first article. It should be about something well-known, and it will need references.

Good luck with editing; please drop me a line some time on my own talk page.

There's lots of information below. Once again, welcome to the fantastic world of Wikipedia!

A tag has been placed on Susan Matheson requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for biographies.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. License tagging for File:RedCatArmour.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:RedCatArmour.jpg. You don't seem to have indicated the license status of the image. Wikipedia uses a set of image copyright tags to indicate this information; to add a tag to the image, select the appropriate tag from this list, click on this link, then click "Edit this page" and add the tag to the image's description. If there doesn't seem to be a suitable tag, the image is probably not appropriate for use on Wikipedia.

For help in choosing the correct tag, or for any other questions, leave a message on Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. Thank you for your cooperation. --ImageTaggingBot (talk) 10:05, 31 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Problems with upload of File:JulianaMOMAtank.JPG

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:JulianaMOMAtank.JPG. You don't seem to have said where the image came from, who created it, or provided a license tag. We require this information to verify that the image is legally usable on Wikipedia, and because most image licenses require giving credit to the image's creator.

To add this information, select the appropriate license tag from this list, click on this link, then click "Edit this page" and add the information to the image's description. If you can't find a suitable license tag, the image is probably not appropriate for use on Wikipedia. If you need help, post your question on Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. Thank you for your cooperation. --ImageTaggingBot (talk) 10:09, 31 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

How references work

[edit]

Further to our chat on IRC, I hope that the following might help explain how to make good references.

Simple references

[edit]

These require two parts;

a)
Chzz is 98 years old.<ref> "The book of Chzz", Aardvark Books, 2009. </ref>

He likes tea. <ref> [http://www.nicecupofteaandasitdown.com Tea website] </ref>
b) A section called "References" with the special code "{{reflist}}";
== References ==
{{reflist}}

(an existing article is likely to already have one of these sections)

To see the result of that, please look at user:chzz/demo/simpleref. Edit it, and check the code; perhaps make a test page of your own, such as user:YOURUSERNAME/reftest and try it out.

Named references

[edit]
Chzz was born in 1837, <ref name="MyBook">
"The book of Chzz", Aardvark Books, 2009.
</ref> in Footown.<ref name="MyBook"/>

Note that the second usage has a / (and no closing ref tag). This needs a reference section as above; please see user:chzz/demo/namedref to see the result.

Citation templates

[edit]

You can put anything you like between <ref> and </ref>, but using citation templates makes for a neat, consistent look;

Chzz has 37 Olympic medals. <ref> {{Citation
 | last = Smith
 | first = John
 | title = Olympic medal winners of the 20th century
 | publication-date = 2001
 | publisher = [[Cambridge University Press]]
 | page = 125
 | isbn = 0-521-37169-4
}}
</ref>

Please see user:chzz/demo/citeref to see the result.

For more help and tips on that subject, see user:chzz/help/refs.

Policies

[edit]

Hi there again.

I hope that this won't put you off too much, but I think it's important that you read some of the relevant policies;

  • Regarding Biographies of Living People, please see WP:BLP

[edit]

Welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, your addition of one or more external links to the page Susan Matheson has been reverted.
Your edit here was reverted by an automated bot that attempts to remove unwanted links and spam from Wikipedia. The external link you added or changed is on my list of links to remove and probably shouldn't be included in Wikipedia. The external links I reverted were matching the following regex rule(s): \babout\.com\b (links: http://movies.about.com/library/weekly/aahoneynews.htm).
If you were trying to insert an external link that does comply with our policies and guidelines, then please accept my creator's apologies and feel free to undo the bot's revert. However, if the link does not comply with our policies and guidelines, but your edit included other changes to the article, feel free to make those changes again without re-adding the link. Please read Wikipedia's external links guideline for more information, and consult my list of frequently-reverted sites. For more information about me, see my FAQ page. Thanks! --XLinkBot (talk) 10:40, 31 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Your recent edits

[edit]

Hi there. In case you didn't know, when you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion, you should sign your posts by typing four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment. If you can't type the tilde character, you should click on the signature button located above the edit window. This will automatically insert a signature with your name and the time you posted the comment. This information is useful because other editors will be able to tell who said what, and when. Thank you! --SineBot (talk) 11:00, 31 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Finding articles to edit

[edit]

You might be interested in the cleanup campaign, or helping out with peer reviews. You could browse the many projects, look at the newest articles, or maybe just something random. We have a list of requested articles, requests for feedback, and a huge backlog of tasks.

Hopefully, this will give you some ideas.  Chzz  ►  11:13, 31 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The XLinkBot revert

[edit]

Hi. Thanks for your contributions to Wikipedia. Sorry for the XLinkBot revert (XLinkBot is an automated account, working on rules). Wikipedia can sometimes seem like a harsh place for people who start here new, I hope you don't feel to much scared away, and I hope you will return. Most of the us regulars do take this place quite serious (maybe too much ;-) ), and we try to keep everything in good shape. The 'tagging' that is introduced is generally (and which you sometimes removed) well designed and described, and gives you links to what needs to be improved or what you should keep in mind. Take some time to read it (I think you did), and to respond appropriately. And your work is never 'lost', it may just not be in the form anymore that you expect.

I have done quite some work on the article, I think it was a good start. I have reverted the edits to a state before XLinkBot, and did some additions and removals, and moved some stuff around. I left some of the tags, as I am not a specialist in the subject and I am unable to judge them (I think it is fine, though!). You might want to contact a WikiProject (that is a place where Wikipedians with similar interests come together, see for a directory Wikipedia:WikiProject).

I hope you are still around to have a look, and if you have questions, don't hesitate to ask! See you around, I hope! --Dirk Beetstra T C 11:55, 31 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

P.S. You can respond here or on my talkpage, I, and others, will keep an eye on this page. --Dirk Beetstra T C 11:55, 31 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Glad to see you didn't leave

[edit]

I believe the bot reverted your links and I see they are restored. I apologize if you think I am being hard on your first edit but the article has to be within the standards. Perhaps it would have been a good idea to read the guidelines before making your first article. It looks much better now from what it was last night but I still noticed a few incorrectly sourced claims. please check the talk page of the article for details. thank you, --Rmzadeh (talk) 20:28, 31 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
