Bridget Oliver's Tavern

[edit]

Ok. I've looked at the sources that I could find for your assertion and they aren't that good. Truth has a better place here, and there may be some sort of backlash if you push it. The accepted sources have her as a tavern owner, its fine with me if we don't portray her as a vicious and shrewlike one...but I think removing the tavern is incorrect and at best premature. There have been several attempts to muddify this stuff...giving the tavern to the Bishops...etc, which is bad ...and until I find the actual stuff it's based on I think removing the tavern is a bad idea...and I register my reservations with you here. You may be able to get a higher-quality version of [1] here:

You may also want to try locating an actual copy of the July 1883 issue of Harper's magazine. eBay or other sources may be helpful.

"Burning" witches at Salem

[edit]

In your book, you state, "I have no idea how or why this myth of the burning witches got started or why it continues." Please see the work of Gretchen A. Adams who has traced the introduction of "burning witches" to pre-Civil War rhetoric between Southern slave-owners and Northern abolitionists.

She gave a talk on the subject at the Boston Athenaeum last October that's available on-line:
