Recent changes

• There is now a standard way to get the target of a redirect page from a Lua module. [1]

Problems

• A new way to handle rollback was introduced. It broke some tools and scripts and was reverted. This will be re-planned after review. [2][3]
• CentralNotice didn't work in some older browsers. This has now been fixed. [4]

Changes this week

• When you edit a file or category page with the visual editor the rest of the page will be shown in its normal place. [5]
• The Translate extension will get an edit summary field. [6]
• A change to the <charinsert> feature could break some user scripts. Contact Bawolff if the "click to insert special characters" links in the edit window break on your wiki. [7][8]
• Elasticsearch will be upgraded on Wikimedia wikis this week. This should not affect you, but if you have problems with the search function this is probably the reason. [9]
• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 31 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 1 June. It will be on all wikis from 2 June (calendar).

Sunday June 5: Women in Jewish History Edit-a-thon

Sunday June 5, 12-5pm: Women in Jewish History Edit-a-thon

Join us for a full Sunday of social Wikipedia editing at the Center for Jewish History (drop-in any time!), during which we will create, update, and improve Wikipedia articles pertaining to Women in Jewish History. All are invited, with no specialized knowledge of the subject or Wikipedia editing experience required. Expanding coverage of Jewish women on Wikipedia makes these women and their creations discoverable, addresses the gender bias on Wikipedia in a positive way, and works to correct imbalances archival collecting practice and institutional projects that have historically silenced women's narratives. A training session on editing Wikipedia will be held at 12:30 pm. Experienced Wikipedians will be on-hand to assist throughout the day. Please bring your laptop and power cord; we will have library resources, WiFi, and a list of suggested topics on hand. Light refreshments will be provided. Make edits! Ask questions! Be bold! We will include a look at the organization and planning for our chapter, and expanding volunteer roles for both regular Wikipedia editors and new participants. Admin The Wordsmith's comments re: "...the ineptness of many current Arbs..." is certainly casting aspersions

Given the seriousness of this Rfc at User talk:The Wordsmith/GMORFC the ongoing threats to sanction participating editors seem to ring hollow in light of supervising admin The Wordsmith's astonishing comments regarding ArbCom members. The comment, which by any definition "casts aspersions," raises a number of questions that call for immediate answers, given the self-created deadline for comments.

The questions, which I hereby put directly to The Wordsmith, are as follows:

• Exactly which ArbCom members are you referring to, when you describe them as "inept?"

• In what way are these current community-elected ArbCom members, as you term them, "inept?"

• Do you have diffs to support this sweeping claim, and can you produce them? If not, why not?

• Since the thrust of this extraordinary Rfc seems to be to prevent "casting aspersions," in the Talk pages of GMO articles (as well as precedent-establishing proposed "locked in" multiple article wording regarding GMO safety) is this not exactly what you are doing in the past 24 hours towards members of the Arbitration Committee? Does this not disqualify you immediately from further participation?

To all concerned: I will post the above subsection on the Talk pages of current ArbCom members, per The Wordsmith's declaration, despite substantial objections, that they will be locking down the page a few hours from this posting, making further timely discussion on this page impossible. • Visiting Special:Notifications doesn't automatically mark notifications as read anymore. You can go between read, unread or all notifications on Special:Notifications. Notifications on Special:Notifications are grouped by day. You can mark every daily group as read individually. Notifications are displayed by groups of 50 on Special:Notifications and you can find former notifications by using navigation arrows. [19][20][21][22]

Recent changes

• The ORES service has now moved to a new location. This should make it easier to use ORES. The ORES review service is now available as a beta feature on Wikidata and Persian Wikipedia. ORES is an artificial intelligence system for Wikimedia wikis to help editors. [25]
• The order of wikis in collapsed cross-wiki notifications was different than when the list was expanded. This is now fixed. [26]
• A new category for tracking pages with math errors was added: Category:Pages with math errors. [27]

Problems

• The Wikimedia Etherpad crashed on June 23. Some edits done that day have been lost. They can be found at etherpad-restore.wikimedia.org for another few days. [28][29]

Changes this week

• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 28 June. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 29 June. It will be on all wikis from 30 June (calendar).
• The way to mark notifications as read or unread will be changed to be more clear. [30]

Meetings

• You can join the next meeting with the VisualEditor team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 28 June at 19:00 (UTC). See how to join.

Future changes

• The Collaboration team at the Wikimedia Foundation will look at developing better tools for edit review. This is because research suggests we scare away newcomers who want to help. [31]
• An e-mail from the Editing Department explains the technical work that is planned and being researched for the future. Items include better wikitext and visual editing, prompts for edits, language improvements, annotations, and meta-data separation. [32]
• The sorting of Notifications into the two fly-out menus is going to change on July 5 to 7. Bundled notifications should be easier to explore and mark as read individually. [33][34][35]
• From 29 June git.wikimedia.org (running Gitblit) will redirect all requests to Phabricator. The vast majority of requests should be correctly redirected. [36]
• Catalan and Polish Wikipedias will have Wikidata descriptions added to articles in the mobile view by default. This is currently a beta option for the mobile versions. This might come to other wikis later. [37]

Recent changes

• A new image scaler fixed a number of bugs for showing SVG files. Some new problems turned up. [40][41][42]
• Notifications are grouped by types. They are now counted by number of notifications and not by unread groups. That change may increase the number of notifications displayed. The earlier way of counting was often incorrect. Unread notifications will also be displayed first. [43][44][45]
• Special:Notifications now has a maximum width for the notifications list on desktop computers. This allows long titles and descriptions to be cut properly. Notifications are now also better parsed. [46][47][48]

Problems

• On 5 July Wikimedia Commons had problems and could not be edited for 20 minutes. For a short while after that the recent changes log and some gadgets were not working properly. It affected administrative actions on other projects too. [49]
• Users who have multiple unread notifications can mark them as read by visiting Special:Notifications page on their wiki.

You archived that user's talk page to avoid discussion there of his recent block. The case is said to be under the jurisdiction of ArbCom, but I cannot find it in ArbCom-related pages. It is under the jurisdiction of arbcom merely by being an oversightblock, and has been under active discussion since about 5 minutes after GorillaWarfare placed the block on both arbcom-l and oversight-l. Jytdog asked that the drama not happen on his talk page., though, of course, drama is inevitable in this. Courcelles (talk) 21:54, 29 June 2016 (UTC)

Are "arbcom-l and oversight-l" some secret fora, or can the ordinary editor or administrator see what is going on when a long-term productive editor is indefinitely blocked? Apparently you are able to see the discussions, as an "oversighter" and a member of ArbCom. This should be discussed publicly as soon as possible. If it is transferred from ANI and from the editor's talk page to ArbCom, further discussions should not occur in secret. Perhaps a COI editor who uses his real name should not be shocked when an administrator points out the connection. Perhaps the admin should not be indef blocked. If we have no right to discuss this at ANI, then it is incumbent of the ArbCom to have a prompt and accessible discussion, so that other administrators know what is expected of them in similar cases of blatant COI editing. See for example my pointing out of a possible COI at [50]. Is that over the line? Should I just ignore apparent COI edits? Edison (talk) 03:13, 30 June 2016 (UTC)

I also disagree with your closing of the discussion. The discussion was active, but I understand why it was done. Jytdog asked that it be closed and you did so, per IAR. Since we normal users will not ever be able to see arbcom-l or oversight-l, we are able to discuss on Wikipedia only. I'd request that you unprotect the page and allow us to continue our discussion, especially on Jytdog's page since he would at least be able to view the page and possibly respond by email (not saying anyone would proxy for him, but it would at least get his side of the story known). I saw the reason, and I'm familiar with UPROT, and I'm aware that users can ask for their page to be protected and it will be done as long as a need exists. Ozzie10aaaa, Jytdog has been consistently deleting MEDR cited content that I have contributed to the encyclopedia. As for a discussion of whether or not he should be unblocked do a editor interaction query and view the results. He has consistently harrassed me for about a year. As far as I know, Ozzie10aaaa , the ultimate decision is made by the oversight committee, because they have access to data that is private for the rest of us. Recent changes

• In notifications, the icon for Notices has been changed from a speech-bubble icon () to a tray icon () for consistency. The Alerts icon has been redesigned too. The colors have been changed for accessibility. [70]

Problems

• If you use the wikEd gadget, changes you made were not kept when you switched from the wikitext editor to the visual editor while you were editing. This has now been fixed. [71]

Changes this week

• Wikimedia search will now ignore question marks at the end of the sentences or words you use when you search. Until now the question mark was just a wildcard. [72]
• On Commons, UploadWizard will now be available on mobile, rather than just the old upload form. This should reduce the workload for the community in reviewing images. [73]
• When you edit with the visual editor a puzzle symbol tells you there is an invisible template in the article. It will now mention the name of the template. [74]
• The button to read something in another language will move for mobile users. This will happen on 9 August. [75]
• When someone mentions you and links to your user page you get a notification. You will now get a notification when you mention yourself this way. [76]
• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 9 August. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 10 August. It will be on all wikis from 11 August (calendar).
• A message on Notifications panel will invite users to try Special:Notifications page. [77]

Problems

• Last week Tech News announced you will get a notification when you mention yourself the same way as if someone else had mentioned you. This caused some problems and will happen later instead. [78]
• Creating and editing links to sections on other pages on the wiki now works again in the visual editor. [79]
• For some users, cross-wiki notifications haven't been working properly. The count has been wrong when only cross-wiki notifications were present. The cross-wiki bundle has been showing only the names of wikis and not the actual notifications. This will be fixed soon. [80][81]

Changes this week

• The login session when you choose "Keep me logged in" will now last a year. Previously it was 30 days. This will happen on August 16. [82]
• Some abuse filters will have to be updated during the week. This is because a bug will be fixed. [83]
• In compact language links, two new kinds of languages will be shown in the shorter language list: Languages that are used in the article's text, and languages where the article has a badge like "featured article" or "good article". [84][85]
• The visual editor will be available by default for logged-out editors on Wikipedias that use the Arabic script. It is already default for logged-in editors. [86]
• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from August 16. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from August 17. It will be on all wikis from August 18 (calendar).

You are invited to join the Wikimedia NYC community for our monthly "WikiWednesday" evening salon (7-9pm) and knowledge-sharing workshop at Babycastles gallery by 14th Street / Union Square in Manhattan. Featuring special guest presentations on WikiVerse and Bringing Wikipedia to the Last Mile. We will include a look at the organization and planning for our chapter, and expanding volunteer roles for both regular Wikipedia editors and new participants. We will also follow up on plans for recent (UN Women!) and upcoming edit-a-thons, and other outreach activities. We welcome the participation of our friends from the Free Culture movement and from all educational and cultural institutions interested in developing free knowledge projects. Thank you for removing the content on my talk page.

My former place of employment was known to the arbs in the first T M arbitration where no sanctions were handed out. I have also experienced off WP harassment in the past. However, this last attack illustrates for me how poorly our COI functions and the license some editors feel they have been given by that COI policy in AE and on talk pages. I consider the post on my talk page not only outing and harassment but a threat since an attempt was made to identify an address accurate or not. This is a serious issue both personally and in my mind for Wikipedia and at this point I am not sure how to deal with it. Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.

Recent changes

• The ORES review tool is now available on Special:Contributions as a beta feature. It can make it easier to find contributions that are probably damaging the wikis. The ORES review tool is available on Wikidata and Persian, Polish, Portuguese, Dutch, Turkish and Russian Wikipedia. [89]
• The norm and ccnorm functions have been updated to make it easier to write abuse filters. This also affects the TitleBlacklist extension. You don't have to transform "I" and "L" to "1", "O" to "0" and "S" to "5" anymore. [90]
• The old pageview data in the "pagecounts-raw" and "pagecounts-all-sites" files is no longer being updated. You can find the new pageview data here. This happened on August 5. [91]

Problems

• Some big image files could not be thumbnailed. This has now been fixed. [92]
• When you moved a page over a redirect it would delete the redirect without saving it in the logs. This has now been fixed. [93]

Changes this week

• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 23 August. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 24 August. It will be on all wikis from 25 August (calendar).

Meetings

• You can join the next meeting with the VisualEditor team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 23 August at 19:00 (UTC). See how to join.

Future changes

• Sometimes when you mention another user they don't get a notification. You will be able to get a notification when you successfully sent out a mention to someone or be told if they did not get a notification. This will be opt-in. You can test this on the test wiki. [94][95]
• How you add text after an edit conflict might work in a different way in the future. You can test the prototype. [96]
