Userboxes

[edit]

Hi, I've noticed that pretty much all of your activity so far on wikipedia (at least under this username) has been creating or editing politically charged userboxes. Since you feel like you've encountered a lot of opposition to your efforts let me tell you why. It has nothing to do with the opinions expressed by them; it's the fact that they express opinions in the first place. If that sounds confusing let me explain.

There is a lot of ongoing debate about the role and place userboxes have on Wikipedia. Some people love them and decorate their user pages with dozens of them. Others, like me, don't have much use for them and would prefer people to use their own words to express their opinions and personality. As a compromise, such userboxes like the ones you are creating (and the ones holding opposite views) are permitted on Wikipedia for use on user pages, but they can't be hosted in the "Template" space. They must be kept on "User" space.

The reasoning behind this is that the Template space should be reserved only for things which pertain to the creation of an encyclopedia. And after all, that is the purpose of this site and should be anybody's main purpose for coming here. However since some people feel that opinionated userboxes help to express the views of an editor (and give perspective to their edits), they can use their personal User space to host their userboxes (or use userboxes hosted on someone else's personal space).

I can promise you that it's not just userboxes with your opinions which are being deleted and fought against. If you see others on Template space advocating opinions which you believe should be removed, feel free to suggest that they be deleted. But please be civil!

Finally, and this is just my personal opinion -- why not find something better to do than write divisive and potentially offensive userboxes? Since you must hold strong political views, why not visit the pages representing those topics and make sure they have a Neutral Point of View? (Of course that means do not insert your own opinions into the articles which violate NPOV). Like I said, the encyclopedia is the reason for this project, and as far as I'm concerned the userboxes are a diversion from that. GT 21:50, 4 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Blocked

[edit]

I have blocked you indefinitely. If you would care to explain just what you're doing, and why a brand new user would start editing userboxes, then I might reconsider my block, but it would take a very convincing argument. User:Zoe|(talk) 01:47, 5 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Consider WP:BITE and WP:AGF please, before boldly exercising your admin powers. This user's edits, while highly opinion driven and in some cases potentially offensive, did not constitute vandalism. And though it's a possibility I see no proof that this user is a sockpuppet. GT 04:04, 5 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
An example of the problem is here [1], where templates were being changed to reverse the statement of the template in a clearly mocking manner. Kukini 13:38, 5 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
No, look closer. All he did was add another userbox to the list. Yes that userbox was inflammatory and I personally can't stand that particular line of thinking, but in the end it's just another userbox with an opinion (which I feel need to be removed from Template space altogether). He should be urged to be more polite and respect other users, not blocked. GT 19:01, 5 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
A brand new user who jumps into the middle of the most controversial section of Wikipedia and starts making controversial edits? I have also asked him to explain, and if his explanation is rational, I will unblock. User:Zoe|(talk) 22:49, 5 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
