The Big Splash

Greetings! There's a brief introductory text at Category:Book stubs, and if you want something more in-depth, take a look at this list. Usually I try to get the stub more specific than book-stub, and add other categories as specific as possible. HTH; Cheers! Her Pegship (tis herself) 05:10, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

I've gone and deleted this as having no content, left it's talk page as it has approriate tags and abnners for when this will likely get recreated. — xaosflux Talk 16:23, 11 August 2007 (UTC)

The Tell-Tale Heart

So... that's a heck of a list of adaptations you added to "The Tell-Tale Heart" article. I think the full list is a bit unnecessary; there's just so many of them. Are all of these 15-minute adaptations notable? Are the 78-minute films really adaptations of the story or are they more appropriate under "Works inspired"? My suggestion is to only pick out the ones that are worth mentioning and gut the rest. Remember that this shouldn't be an indiscriminate list, like Pokemon trying to catch 'em all. ;) What do you think? Feel free to respond on the article's talk page. --Midnightdreary —Preceding unsigned comment added by Midnightdreary (talkcontribs) 12:32, 1 September 2007 (UTC)

Templates versus scratch cataloging

There is no need to change perfectly acceptable catalging in Harvard citation or Modern Language Association styles into a American Psychological Association style which is the style adopted for Wiki templates. Citations in bibliographic format are difficult to cite for most authors and templates are provided to help editors unfamiliar with cataloging but are not mandated. As an author, editor and a 30 year+ librarian, I have been exposed to many differing styles and formats. Most publishing style guides utilize the MLA (The Modern Language Association) Style for identifying research sources. The very simple form of this style is the tried and true: "Author. 'Title.' Place of publication: Publisher, Date. ISBN: (optional)." The academic or scientific citation style that you have adopted is not generally used in school, public and other libraries. See the following website (one of countless digital aids available) for a primer on this bibliographic standard: <http://honolulu.hawaii.edu/legacylib/mlahcc.html>

As for citations, I rely on the the Harvard Citation and the MLA (Modern Language Association) style which is the world's most common bibilographic style and one that is accepted by Wikipedia. I have been utilizing this citation style in my own writing and in the cataloguing that I carried out in my other life as a librarian. I know that the standard today for library cataloguing is to simply download an entire MARC (MAchine Readable Cataloging) record form an established library but I continued to be a curmudgeon and relied on "scratch" editing which I still apply to Wikipedia work today. Basically it follows the old format of: Author. Title. Place of Publication: Publisher, Date of publication. (with variations to satisfy ordering and researching stipulations, usually ended by including an ISBN (international standard book number) and at times, page references). There are some subtle variations of the MLA style to facilitate multiple authors, articles, multimedia and other questions. FWIW Bzuk 03:47, 6 September 2007 (UTC).

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Klaatu Revived.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:Klaatu Revived.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 14:03, 9 September 2007 (UTC)

Jack Twist and Ennis Del Mar

I responded to your reverts of my placing Jack Twist‎ and Ennis Del Mar in the Fictional gay men category. I will be considering removing them from the Fictional bisexuals category. If they should not be categorized here on Wikipedia as gay, then they should not be categorized here on Wikipedia as bisexual either, for the reasons that I brought up on both of their talk pages. At best, they should both be listed as only LGBT characters when it comes to placing them in any sexual category, since there is debate over whether to call them gay or bisexual. Disputed fair use rationale for Image:The Big Splash book.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:The Big Splash book.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 18:39, 24 October 2007 (UTC)

Unreferenced tag on Tim Russ

I removed this in the rewrite today as I couldn't see any major claims not covered by the external links provided. Feel free to highlight specific claims. 77.97.86.12 22:02, 24 October 2007 (UTC)

In response to your message, I added no information, I just reorganised what was there. I can't see anything in the article that is remotely contentious, or not verifiable in the external links. Like I said, if you want to better highlight unreferenced portions go right ahead, a blanket tag is rather unhelpful in my view. As for the bio template, I don't think it helps either if you leave the sections blank. I'm not going to make any changes to it at this time though, these are just my opinions on it.77.97.86.12 18:13, 29 October 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for the clarification and apologize for any presumption. I agree in most cases the general tag is not helpful and will remove it. I fancy the material and wish to see it preserved. I was motivated by haven seen good material lost for the lack of sourcing. My presumption was a belief you'd contributed new material from new sources. I'm inclined to leave the biography structure in place to encourage contributions but I'll respect your edit if you remove them. Thank you. – Conrad T. Pino 19:51, 29 October 2007 (UTC)

  • Thank you for your offer to help out with the About Gay Movies template. What I have in mind is something like the IMDb template. But I haven't got any clue on how to set up such a difficult thing on Wikipedia. Could you give any tips or guidance on how to do this? Thanks in advance. Lordmarchmain 23:49, 28 October 2007 (UTC)
    • You're welcome and we're on the same page. My intent is to show you the process letting you decide who will do the work as we move forward step by step. Let's begin: Step 1, choosing a template name. You've pointed to the Internet Movie Database as an example which has {{imdb name}} and {{imdb title}} since that site has multiple services. I'm not familiar with About Gay Movies nor it's services which places the name selection burden on you but worry not as the name can be changed if the first proves unsuitable. Let me know once you've choose a name. – Conrad T. Pino 17:02, 29 October 2007 (UTC)

RE:Mobile Suit template

I've had a look at what is going on, and am not going to comment either way. I created this template back when I spent some time editing Gundam Wing articles, prompted partly by minor interest and partly in response to a series of deletion discussions. It was primarily a tool for my own use in the GW mobile suit articles, because I thought some kind of transcluded infobox template would be of more use than raw code on the pages, which could easily be broken. It was put in mainspace because I thought other articles for other Gundam continuities could use it. After completing my work on the mobile suit articles associated with Gundam Wing, (which consisted of cutting down for fancruft, sourcing the in-universe tech specs and episode cites for events in the series, and using the template to replace the raw code), I notified WP:GUNDAM that the template was available for use on other articles and moved on to subjects that appealed to me more.

I am indifferent as to what happens in relation to the template or the involved articles. If the Wikipedia community thinks it is unnecessary, delete it. If the Gundam-editing community wants to alter, merge, or mothball it is up to them. I've done my bit, and I do not want to be involved. -- saberwyn 02:41, 3 November 2007 (UTC)

Re: Template:Documentation reverted 20:51, November 3, 2007

Hi there. I don't understand what problem you were trying to solve at Template:Documentation, but you've broken the template so that it includes too much whitespace at the beginning. See WP:SONG#Infobox Single. As I don't understand the code well enough to fix it, would you mind trying to restore the previous behavior, where such excessive whitespace was not generated. Thanks in advance. --PEJL 23:30, 3 November 2007 (UTC)

I had already responded. --PEJL 23:58, 3 November 2007 (UTC)
If you can figure out a way to not make it produce excessive whitespace for cases like WP:SONG#Infobox, then that's great. I'll admit that I don't understand what other problem(s) you or Patrick are trying to solve. The template could really use a sandbox and testcases, to make it easier to understand the different requirements, and see how changes affect different use cases. --PEJL 16:07, 6 November 2007 (UTC)
No, I'm not satisfied. There is excessive whitespace at WP:SONG#Infobox where there previously wasn't (using Template:Documentation and before that Template:Template doc). --PEJL 18:51, 6 November 2007 (UTC)
Sorry, communicating via phone or e-mail isn't convenient for me. To try to explain how it used to look and how it should (IMHO) look, the distance between the lines "This documentation is transcluded from Template:Infobox Single/doc..." and "Code" at WP:SONG#Infobox should be the same as between the lines "For songs about Wikipedia, see Wikipedia:Song." and "WikiProject Songs is a project intended..." at the top of WP:SONG. If you look at the generated code, there is an extra <p><br /></p> between the two, which should not be there. I don't know why this code was changed, as I don't know what other use cases it was adapted for. --PEJL 19:18, 6 November 2007 (UTC)
Yes, there's conditional logic to hide certain parts on WP:SONG, which was not adapted for use elsewhere. I've added more tests to the testcases to highlight the problem. --PEJL 20:24, 6 November 2007 (UTC)
Looks good. Thanks a lot! --PEJL 22:48, 6 November 2007 (UTC)

(outdent) Regarding the impending merge, my only suggestion is adding more test cases, for example for the cases Patrick's recent changes were meant to fix. --PEJL 09:20, 7 November 2007 (UTC)

Note also that Template:Documentation itself displays excessive whitespace between the lines "This template has a sandbox..." and "This template displays..." (using the markup <p><br />This template displays...). This might make another good testcase. --PEJL 10:32, 7 November 2007 (UTC)

Template:Documentation

Be bold and just do it. If you feel as though there may be technical issues, let me or another admin know and it can be finished rather quickly. Frankly, nowhere near the amount of information is needed that you've provided here, especially for such an uncontentious merge. Generally just a quick comment on the talk page indicating that the templates have been merged per consensus is more than enough; most of the time even that isn't necessary. Cheers. --MZMcBride 21:57, 7 November 2007 (UTC)

What is Template:Documentation, template? This merge should've taken about five minutes; do you just want me to finish it? --MZMcBride 19:13, 10 November 2007 (UTC)

I can't really help you with those though, I am not really a template techie in that regard. :) Just leave a message on the admin's talk page who denied your request for further info. Intricate template

Hi Conrad! Some months ago you discussed the styles for the {{intricate template}} over at Template talk:Intricate template#Edit requested 15-Nov-2007. We have now made the {{ombox}} which is an ambox compatible meta-template but with proper styles for "other pages" message boxes. That is for namespaces like "Wikipedia:" and "Template:". I have now changed the {{intricate template}} to use the {{ombox}}. I hope you like it!

You are very welcome to come and discuss the styles for the {{ombox}} on its talk page.

Oh, and the new standardisation of talk page message boxes {{tmbox}} might interest you. We need more people discussing there to achieve consensus for what styles to use for it.

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Template:Documentation/sandbox/doc, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Template:Documentation/sandbox/doc is a test page.

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Template:Documentation/sandbox/doc, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Help!

I tagged lots and lots of templates with Template:Template sandbox notice, a template that you used yourself. David Göthberg then pointed out several errors in my tagging. I then went through the first 30 tags to revise my errors based on my discussion with David. In the mean time, David and I continued to talk and I realized I again needed to go back over the first 30 tags. I then revised the usage documentation for Template:Template sandbox notice to what I thought was reasonable and notified David that he could revise my changes to the usage documentation as he saw fit. Once again, I began rechecking my edits. I then received a message that David reverted my template usage instructions post, saying we need more consensus on the template usage instructions. I've got a significant number of edits I made that I need to go back and check, but have no agreeded upon template usage instructions in which to revise my edits. I'm going batty here thinking my edits have caused significant problems and feel stuck in not being able to fix them. Would you please reply to my post and/or revise the documentation of Template:Template sandbox notice so that I can have some direction and the template usage instructions talk can have some consensus. Thanks! Suntag (talk) 17:16, 10 September 2008 (UTC)

After re-reading your message on my talk page I see that you prefer MSN over IRC so I fired up my old MSN client. I am now also connected as xxxdavid@yyypjort.com . (Remove the xxx and yyy part.) I am not very used to that client so I might be a bit clumsy and slow in handling it. But give it a try.
