Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Jack Adams (ice hockey b. 1920), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page AHL (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Orphaned non-free media (File:Nolinor Aviation Logo.svg)

Thanks for uploading File:Nolinor Aviation Logo.svg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Hazard-Bot (talk) 04:09, 12 February 2013 (UTC)

My apologies, I didn't actually mean to revert your edit. I edited an old revision and didn't notice. Sorry about that. -DJSasso (talk) 16:26, 11 February 2013 (UTC)

While I was here I should have mentioned that I have really liked a lot of the work of yours I have stumbled onto the last month or so. Keep it up. Love that you have found a lot of pictures for some of these old timers. -DJSasso (talk) 18:25, 14 February 2013 (UTC)
Thanks. I've actually been working with some folks at the Society for International Hockey Research in finding some of the dates for these guys as well - I think we've taken quite a few of the missing DOD ones down in the past few weeks, so that's always good! – Connormah (talk) 01:26, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
Hey while I am thinking about it and since I am making one of my runs through Category:Wikipedia requested photographs of ice hockey people removing articles that now have images and since you have been adding quite a few images could I get you to check the talk page and remove the "|needs-photo=yes" parameter from the ice hockey template when you add one? Will save me from having to do it in future runs. :) -DJSasso (talk) 16:48, 19 February 2013 (UTC)

Hi there; I undid your edit to remove a tag. The {{recentdeath}} tag is pretty standard for a couple of days after a death. While he was 96 years old, and died from natural causes, please wait another day before removing it. Bearian (talk) 17:17, 26 February 2013 (UTC)

It's standard only for articles with unclear circumstances and unusual traffic per the documentation. That doesn't seem to be the case here. CMAH (Connormah's Sock) 19:26, 26 February 2013 (UTC)

Enver Hoxha's signature

I plan to one day significantly expand the article on Enver Hoxha. I would like to know if you might be able to trace his signature for inclusion into the article à la FDR and other historical figures. If so I could email it to you. --Ismail (talk) 04:56, 27 February 2013 (UTC)

Sure, I should be able to do it. I'll send you a Wiki e-mail - you can reply to that address with the link. – Connormah (talk) 05:02, 27 February 2013 (UTC)

SIHR

The problem is the SIHR isn't a reliable source because its user generated content like Wikipedia. We need published references. It's a case of Wikipedia:Verifiability, not truth. -DJSasso (talk) 13:20, 8 March 2013 (UTC)

Not entirely I'd say - those databases we cite all go off the SIHR as well I'm pretty sure. The dates are all based off official records and such and have to be added by database admins if I'm not mistaken. – Connormah (talk) 14:51, 8 March 2013 (UTC)
This is true. I'm not changing it back. But it is one of those sticky situations. Especially since in this case one of the sources is the hall of fame. But the hall of fame website has had a number of mistakes in the past so it isn't all that shocking. -DJSasso (talk) 15:09, 8 March 2013 (UTC)
Are you referring to the Legends of Hockey site? If so that's entirely based off of a SIHR publication, Total Hockey, if I'm not mistaken. CMAH (Connormah's Sock) 04:30, 9 March 2013 (UTC)
Yeah that is the site I was referring to. I am not aware of where it gets its information. All I know is that it is the Hall of Fame's official site. But the people here on Wikipedia have found a very large number of mistakes in it in the past and have written in to have them fixed. Not sure if any of them ever have been, if they have its not been as quick a fix as the hockeydb site which responds remarkably fast to corrections. Anyway its all good. :) -DJSasso (talk) 11:55, 11 March 2013 (UTC)

I don't know if you saw it or not since the edit was (rightfully) reverted, but someone added a YOD for Maurice Courteau of c. 2002 based on [1]. Might help you/SIHR in your searches for a DOD. Canadian Paul 22:04, 9 March 2013 (UTC)

I forwarded it to the SIHR people I'm working with. Hopefully we can dig something up. – Connormah (talk) 04:49, 11 March 2013 (UTC)

Short answer: no. We need to include at least one example of his career. If we applied your logic to all sports people, we'd have obnoxiously long entries.Rusted AutoParts 04:39, 28 March 2013 (UTC)

Could you point out to me the guideline that says we can't have an example?Rusted AutoParts 04:44, 28 March 2013 (UTC)
Because we're not going to list every bloody team now, are we? One or two examples are fine, as shown with all other sports related deaths. Case closed.Rusted AutoParts 04:49, 28 March 2013 (UTC)
Dude, this discussion ended when I discovered you had a favouritism towards the person in question as you've made numerous edits to his article. It's the way it goes, we feature one or two examples of his career, not the whole career.Rusted AutoParts 05:00, 28 March 2013 (UTC)
Why is this even a big deal? Seriously, this is what has been done for awhile, why the sudden stubbornness with his one guy? And having "an extensive career" isn't a reason.Rusted AutoParts 05:07, 28 March 2013 (UTC)

Following you!

I get my "enjoyment" from correcting pages that appear on the Pages with missing references list. Several times over the last day or two I have found myself cleaning up after you - you add references to various Canadian figures, but you don't seem to check whether it was good. What happens is, because yours is usually the first, there is no {{Reflist}} on the page. The red error message tells you this. All you need to do is add, at the bottom of the page before any external links (a) section header - ==References==; (b) choice of {{Reflist}} or <references /> (I think it's immaterial which.) There are buttons in the wiki markup panel at the bottom of the edit pane.

Just in case you were interested, someone at the site that supplies data for Sports Reference.com found the birth and details for Blanchard. Should be on Sports Reference sooner or later! Canadian Paul 03:09, 29 April 2013 (UTC)

That's great news! I still have a tab open with his article, intending to get around to looking thoroughly when I get the chance. Preliminary searches didn't turn up anything useful however Newspaperarchive's search was being a bit sticky. Oh, also I may get around to creating the article for Louis M. Crump which is on your to do list some time soon - every sign points his to him being still living but I guess we could be surprised... – Connormah (talk) 03:12, 29 April 2013 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Jerry Riordan, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Trenton, Wisconsin (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Follow up to a block you made

A little while ago a user (Felipito1.966) was making a number of unhelpful edits eg blindly changing american spelling to english spelling and removing the unit conversion template and hardcoding everything in metric. Somehow this behavior made it on your radar and you blocked the user. The block period is over and the user is back. I am not sure what the policy is for gauging if the editor learned the lesson but judging from his first four edits it seems the editor did not learn a thing. All of his edits were reverted by people other than me very quickly. Can you help out?

Summary of edits:

Changed spelling from american to british spelling and a cosmetic edit or two.
Diff: https://wiki.riteme.site/w/index.php?title=Philip_II_of_Spain&diff=prev&oldid=555991565
Removed all unit conversion templates and changed them to hardcoded metric units.
Diff: https://wiki.riteme.site/w/index.php?title=Eurostar&diff=557319456&oldid=557000659
Inserted multiple notes (viewable in article, not HTML comments) about the difference between 1 billion:
"(IMPORTANT NOTE! In this articel: 1 billion US = 1000 million; 1 billion UK = 1 million million)".
And added the following note to the population by continent heading:
"(NB For US citizens the Americas are considered two continents)"
Diff: https://wiki.riteme.site/w/index.php?title=World_population&diff=557324046&oldid=556555818
Changed the article so that it was not clear if british english used billion in long scale or short scale.
Diff: https://wiki.riteme.site/w/index.php?title=1%2C000%2C000%2C000&diff=557326032&oldid=556086222

All of these edits were promptly reverted by other editors. It seems that the cooling off period did little to change this user's opinion about the meaning of helpful and constructive edits. Other than these four edits the editor also blanked his talk page (and archive) and user page, in order to remove any mention of his previous unhelpful editing and or his block history.

A quick perusal of his past talk pages makes it clear that this type of editing is the norm or this user:

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Quebec City 2002 Olympic bid logo.svg

Thank you for uploading File:Quebec City 2002 Olympic bid logo.svg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. Dianna (talk) 00:53, 31 May 2013 (UTC)

Hi! I saw that you were the admin that blocked User:Felipito1.966 who has a long rap sheet of bullying his way across Wikipedia and toward anyone using other units, styles, and variations of English. He is back doing the same thing again despite being "counseled" again and again with no remorse or any changes of behavior at all since being reported to ANI (August 2012) where too many editors were "optimistic" that he would change. Formatting of references

Hi, Conormah. Recently you've edited a bunch of biographical articles about judges, to add sourced information on date-of-birth. That's great! But in many cases, you've managed to format the references in a way that may not be the most clear.

For instance, in your recent change to Kermit Lipez, you formatted the reference like this: <Ref>[http://books.google.ca/books?id=UrxFAQAAIAAJ&q=%22Lipez,+kermit%22+1941&dq=%22Lipez,+kermit%22+1941&hl=en&sa=X&ei=us-vUfuQO4jIiwLWs4CwCA&ved=0CDwQ6AEwAg]</reF>. Unfortunately that means in the references list, it appears merely as [1]. That's really not helpful because it means the reader can't tell what the reference is without hovering over the link and even then it may not be super-clear.

It would be best, I think, if you could format such references using Template:cite web. I realize sometimes that's a lot of work, though, since you have to put in author=, title=, url=, accessdate=, etc., etc., in order to be really useful.

But if that's too high a burden, a better approach is to just omit the brackets around the URL. That is, just say <ref>http://foo.bar/baz</ref> instead of <ref>[http://foo.bar/baz]</ref>. If you do that, then it shows up as the literal URL itself, i.e. http://foo.bar/baz and not [1]. When the URLs aren't great, like in the Lipez instance, this isn't as good as {cite web}, but it's still better than nothing.

Thanks so much! What do you think? jhawkinson (talk) 02:52, 7 June 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for the advice. However, since I usually do these in mass numbers, I don't really have the time (and admittedly patience) to use the Cite web template. Sometime I will use WP:REFLINKS to format them automatically but I guess I could go without the brackets if it helps. The only reason I use the square brackets is that often times the URL is quite long and sometimes has a tendency to stretch the pages. – Connormah (talk) 03:29, 7 June 2013 (UTC)
Indeed, I understand your point about doing en mass, but that almost makes it worse. Usually when there are just one or two, I can go back and correct them myself by hand. But going through and finding all the metadata that you had in front of you added those is going to be a much bigger task for anyone else to do. I still think it's a big task for you, but but even bigger for anyone else. Maybe the thing to do would be to use {{cite web|title=Title here|url=url here}} and not fill out any other fields? That should be manageable for you, and make use of the special info you have in front of you (title of the work), and not require you to spend hours filling out little template options, but still make the result substantially more readable and useful to others? I agree, when the URL is crazy-long that is a problem too. I also worry a bit that some of those Google Books URLs might not be long-term stable, but I don't really know. (I'm trying to propose a good compromise that makes the page more readable without giving you a huge amount more work; I'm not sure if I'm finding the right one though). Thanks. jhawkinson (talk) 14:40, 7 June 2013 (UTC)

template question

Hi, Connormah -- I had occasion to modify the Presidents of Yale University template when Peter Salovey recently assumed the position. From the template history I gather you are mostly responsible for constructing it. I wondered why the footnote reads "* indicates acting president, pro tempore or chancellor"? It seems to me that the first two alternatives cover it. Andrew and Daggett were both pro tempore, Gray was acting president. I don't know of any Yale president that was called "chancellor". And since "pro tempore" and "acting" are pretty much the same thing in different languages, I was thinking "* indicates service in an acting or pro tempore capacity" might be a better phrasing. Anyway, I thought it best to run it past you for your thoughts in case I'm missing something. - Nunh-huh 03:48, 6 July 2013 (UTC)

Feel free to do whatever you wish! I do recall creating the template a while back but I'm pretty sure that I based it off another university's template for their presidents. – Connormah (talk) 04:59, 6 July 2013 (UTC)
That makes sense, the other Uni probably had chancellors! I've done the deed. Thanks. - Nunh-huh 07:30, 6 July 2013 (UTC)

Replaceable fair use File:Coat of Arms of Guelph, Ontario.svg

Thanks for uploading File:Coat of Arms of Guelph, Ontario.svg. I noticed the description page specifies that this media item is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails the first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media item could be found or created that provides substantially the same information or which could be adequately covered with text alone. If you believe this media item is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the file discussion page, write the reason why this media item is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 17:14, 20 July 2013 (UTC)

However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that will be useful.

Thank you. Hazard-Bot (talk) 05:43, 22 July 2013 (UTC)

Flake Laird photo

Can you find a usable photo for Flake Laird? I think his bio would be greatly improved by a pic! Jrcla2 (talk) 22:56, 22 July 2013 (UTC)

Thank you for the dates and photo, it looks great. Jrcla2 (talk) 23:30, 22 July 2013 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Rick Fraser (politician), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Lakeland College (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

This user is worth watching. Similar edits to User:Felipito1.966. HkCaGu (talk) 03:03, 19 July 2013 (UTC)

Please take a look at Philipthesecond's latest edit to a user's talk page: [3] With this condescending attitude toward other English users, it's now obvious that he is User:Felipito1.966, whom you blocked indefinitely. HkCaGu (talk) 17:18, 23 July 2013 (UTC)
May want to go to WP:SPI with this one. Feel free to warn the user but I don't think I should block right off the bat here. – Connormah (talk) 17:20, 23 July 2013 (UTC)

Hello, I'm BracketBot. I have automatically detected that your edit to David Forbes (politician) may have broken the syntax by modifying 1 "()"s. If you have, don't worry, just edit the page again to fix it. If I misunderstood what happened, or if you have any questions, you can leave a message on my operator's talk page.

List of unpaired brackets remaining on the page:
