Colla castellera d’Edinburgh, also Cardats d’Edinburgh, is an international colla castellera in Edinburgh, Scotland, UK whose main objective is to build and promote castells (human towers). First documented castells were collected over the 18th century [1] [2]. From 1960s, they become more and more popular and on 16thn November 2010, Human towers were declared by UNESCO to be amongst the Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Cultural Heritage [3].
Castellers of Edinburgh is an international group of people, many of them from Catalonia, who promulgate the Catalan tradition and culture of human towers. To this end, open rehearsals, workshops and public performances are held.
== History ==
Colla Castellera d’Edinburgh was founded in September 2015. Raúl Hernández Gironés who had been a casteller member in Pataquers de la URV, he came up with the idea to create a colla in a nostalgic moment with the goal to create a new social circle. He presented his idea to a well-known group of Spaniards living in the city through a social network and people immediately showed interest. The group was established as a multicultural organisation.
Despite the goal of building human towers, the main objective is enjoying and having fun all together while human towers are built. Nowadays, the group is approximately formed by 30 members and is willing to grow so that bigger and taller castells can be built with a proper pinya.
A Jacobite Ghillie Shirt is worn. The shirt's colour is navy blue as the background colour of Saint Andrew’s Scottish flag.
== Relevant performances ==
Performances are key to putting castells and Colla Castellera d’Edinburgh in the spotlight. To this end, several workshops, activities and performances have been celebrated on the most important Catalan festivities, such as Castanyada, Sant Jordi, Sant Joan or September 11 at the most emblematic places of the city.
