16 hour cycles

Just as an example: you mentioned hooks appearing in the appropriate geographical location. Who is going to go through

Jan 4 switch is made at GMT 0:00 and 16:00

Jan 5 switch is made at 12:00

Jan 6 switch is made at 0:400 and 20:00

Jan 7 switch is made at 08:00

Jan 8 switch is made at 0:00 and 16:00

...and decide where an Australian hook should best appear? When should special occasion hooks appear? What if only four hours of a day is in the most appropriate time zone, but that's in the middle of their night? Should we move it to the day before or after, even though it was supposed to appear on that day? Who makes that decision, and who is responsible for doing the actual physical swapping of hooks? What if a swap throws the rest of the prep set out of balance?

And that's just one scenario that shows how complicated this makes things. Other issues include that no one is sure without checking whether we were supposed to switch at midnight, 4 am, 8 am, noon, 4 pm, or 8pm, so multiple people are probably checking to make sure the bot did the update. And if it didn't, now we need to find an admin, which means remembering which admins might be available at 4am GMT or whenever. @Valereee The idea behind the 16-hour cycle is that there is no need to try to time the hooks for a specific geographic region. So no swapping is needed. Special occasion hooks would be tricky but you could always stop the 16-hour cycles once the load has stabilized. What I have noticed is that the midnight UK Time swap is the one that is not always well monitored anyway. Why not have a trial to see if it works at all, or if it is completely unmanageable? It's not that it isn't worth asking, but I think you mentioned it before and were told it was untenable.

There are a multitude of reasons it causes disproportionate extra work, and it doesn't actually in any way solve the problem that our prep builders are already overburdened with 24-hour cycles. 12 hour cycles would be worse for prep builders than 16, but 16-hour causes more extra work for others, too. It's just kind of a lose-lose to go to anything that people don't know without really thinking when an update should have happened. We used to run 8-hour cycles; that worked because everyone knew it was midnight, 8am, 4pm. Every day, same thing. Even when we go back and forth between 12 and 24, everyone knows: when we're on 2-a-days, it's noon and midnight. Otherwise it's midnight. But with 16-hour cycles, there are potentially six different times, and you can't be sure what it is today without checking which of three possible schedules it could be duirng 16-hours. @Philafrenzy What if we changed the verb "travelled" to "logged" (which can mean "the miles you recorded yourself in your own logs" which is what it is)? (I recently raised the question of primary sources in hooks, and got a bunch of responses saying it was ok on a case-by-case basis.) It's still the one I want to click the most. Then again... Hi Cielquiparle. I was wondering if the hook of Nieuwmarkt metro station, which was pushed down to slot 2 because of this, could be moved to slot 1 of a later date (so probably prep 1 of 15 February). I believe the photo really adds another level to it. Now I'm well aware that not all hooks with a photo get to actually run on the Main Page with it, so just asking if it's possible or not. efn Template usage?

Hello Cielquiparle, thank you for your edits (esp. the pool anecdote!) and advice re: John Hoke article. Top-shelf stuff.

I'm hoping you might be able to help me with the formatting of notes using the efn template (see note on Talk page of above). I've used this in articles that I've edited, but haven't gotten it to work exactly as it should (please see this and this). Ideally, where the same note is used multiple times, there shouldn't be identical copies of the note in the "Notes" section, but rather multiple incidences indicated by the "^" symbol — however, I've spent more time on this than a reasonable person might and couldn't get it right (yet). (Also not sure where the "Notes" section should be placed per MOS.) Lastly, the nomenclate "note 1" is ugly (to my eye, at least). It would be better the way you did it in the Hoke article (i.e., "a", "b", etc.; or even "i", "ii", etc.; or whatever the correct formatting and/or WP house-style is), but again, thus far, I have utterly failed to get the wikitext to co-operate with my intent, alas.

Hi @Cl3phact0. Funnily enough... I thought of you yesterday when I found myself embedding efn into an awards table at Shirley Kurata#Awards (to indicate when she tied). I left a comment on the Brionvega article Talk page (about the content, not about the efn usage). Were you planning to consolidate the a/b/c/d end notes together with the numbered ones, or keep them separate? I think I would capitalise the "D" in "Designed by" since it's at the start of the note. Otherwise I'm not sure I'm much help as my experience with both efn and industrial design is fairly limited... Cielquiparle (talk) 22:00, 6 March 2023 (UTC)

Thank you for your comments on Talk:Brionvega. Following your advice, I've capitalised the "D" in "designed" – wasn't sure about that, but looking at it now, it's clear that you are right (idem for Braun article). As for descriptive prose about the objects themselves, I think you are right about this too – the only caveat being that as (more of) a visual thinker, once something is seen, it's challenging impossible for me to "un-see" it and switch back to prose. I'm ok with language like, "which is amongst the earliest examples of this product typology to challenge traditional shapes and aesthetics, making it a turning point in the history of Italian industrial design", but describing what something actually looks like can be tricky. I'll give it a spin just the same, but it's not really my lane. Re: a-b-c/1-2-3, I'm agnostic. I like the differentiation between the two types of information as is, but if there is a 'house style', happy to roll with that too. (Is there a "correct" way to do this per WP:MOS?) @Cl3phact0 In that case, I think you need sub-headings to clearly differentiate between two types of explanatory notes. (So the reader knows the two are separate for a specific reason, and also so that it looks tidy.) Regarding the descriptions, the whole point is that the burden is not on *you* to do the describing (which could quickly lead to WP:OR – instead, you should hunt for descriptions in secondary sources, which you can refer to as you rephrase in your own words or quote directly (with citations). @Theleekycauldron It only broke because of the upside down image and caption. First, it added like two or three extra lines above the image hook. The right thing to do was to ignore that, and to keep adding hooks below it – which is what I did after it first "flipped out" – and then sure enough, it worked after all. But after I mentioned what happened, dying fixed something and now PSHAW doesn't work at all for Prep 7 specifically. But whatever they did was likely technically necessary hygiene-wise, because I'm pretty sure whatever enabled turning multiple sets completely upside down wasn't supposed to be happening. Ironically before that all happened was when I thought I noticed the behavior of PSHAW messing up the credits in the wrong order, but because of the anomaly with the upside down pic in that set, maybe it doesn't count. DYK College Street, Dublin

I think "lofty parapet" sounds better and more exposed than "on the roof" which sound rather bland and safe. I've been up there and it is high and exposed, though I was there when there was scaffolding all around that side of the building during restoration in 1970s & 80s, and it really is high. Here is a much higher resolution image c:File:1868 Dublin visit by Prince & Princess of Wales.jpg. For the future you may find it helpful to know that on the Wayback Machine, if you look down the files list at the right side there is often a "SINGLE PAGE PROCESSED JP2 ZIP" file and the images there are very high resolution but first you have to find the exact page file (in this case image 19 of the unzipped files) and then you have to convert it to either jpg or png because we don't use JPG2000. This is what I did and chose jpg which was only a 4.7Mb file compared to the png at 9.8Mb and I've added a link to the other version in each file. I had a closer look at the description and actually the file description says it is College Green and not College Street which is to the left of Trinity College behind the people in the centre back of the image, and the Parliament building, and it cannot be seen from this vantage point. ww2censor (talk) 13:17, 21 May 2023 (UTC)

There has to be a really compelling encyclopedic reason to use fair use - to show the object of the article for instance - and I regret that there doesn't seem to be one here. It's possible that the image is out of copyright which would be different, but Russian and Soviet copyright law is notoriously difficult and without being able to read the Russian inscription on the text side of the card it's difficult to say whether the author is stated and whether their artwork is now out of copyright. Currently, we deprecate AI generated images due to copyright doubts. In any case, as Edwardx says, it's not clear that the image in fact has any significance at all. I don't think that our discussion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Irène Souka was necessarily bludgeoning; we weren't just disagreeing with each other but actually having a meaningful discussion. Thanks for that, by the way! I felt like the discussion could be quite productive, particularly regarding the proposal of a new article for the Selmayr affair. I understand if you don't want to continue that discussion there to avoid anything that might share the appearance of bludgeoning, and discussion of new articles arguably doesn't belong in an AfD (although merging is a legitimate AfD outcome), but I'd really appreciate hearing your thoughts on my response. If you think that I'm fundamentally misunderstanding WP:SIGCOV, it's also important for me to be aware of that. If you feel that we can't come to an agreement on the sourcing / notability situation on Souka, it would be great to hear what you think about the Selmayr affair article proposal. Running from October 1 to 31, 2023, WikiProject Women in Green (WiG) is hosting a Good Article (GA) edit-a-thon event with the theme Around the World in 31 Days! All experience levels welcome. Never worked on a GA project before? We'll teach you how to get started. Or maybe you're an old hand at GAs – we'd love to have you involved! Participants are invited to work on nominating and/or reviewing GA submissions related to women and women's works (e.g., books, films) during the event period. We hope to collectively cover article subjects from at least 31 countries (or broader international articles) by month's end. Hey @Cielquiparle, thanks for that, I'll check it out. Also, thanks for your additions to the Italian Quarter page and for creating a page for the Last Supper mural. The stone bench below the mural used to be one of the few places people could actually sit down in the Temple Bar area without having to pay anything. There aren't many benches around Temple Bar, maybe to prevent people loitering or something? Last time I was in Dublin (March-ish 2023) I noticed the Council, or somebody, had installed one of those heavy duty metal strips all along the bench, with metal baubles poking out of it, to prevent people sitting/sleeping anywhere on it. • And knowing the Grau, Kleinsorge, and Noble Electric names from that leads to Dottie Smith's (op cit.) discussion of mining in the Elder Creek area in xyr Foothills history.
• Which then leads to a 1946 map in a California DMG Report of the State Geologist and a 1965 report on the mining in the Californian DMG Bulletin.
• There was a water rights battle some time in the 1920s, apparently.
• Guinn's 1906 History of the State of California and Biographical Record at the Internet Archive has a few actual facts about George Malay Lowrey, including place and date of birth, if you can stomach all of the skippable fawning.

    • I discover these huge things from time to time. This is a corporate magnate who ran several oil companies, did sheep farming, was prominent as a Bakersfield V.I.P.. I once found one huge subject, Hanwell Park hiding (literally) underneath a road on a housing estate that someone had dumped on us: Grove Avenue, London (AfD discussion). This one you will find in USGS reports on his oil fields and the Sunset Oil Company (another company!) decades later in 1974. How do you want me to dump the text from Saco, California on you?       • Let me answer my own question with a little brown box, of the sort that Drmies regularly enjoys, which will address any attribution problems if the original edit history is deleted.

        I'm dubious about the Merle Haggard connection simply because Merle Haggard's place was (according to Wiley Nickel's father who bought it from Haggard) next to the Rio Bravo Golf Course, which is the other side of Bakersfield from the Rio Bravo, California on the maps. So there's some clarity about Rio Bravo, and whether the Solomon ranch that stopped in the middle 20th century is the same place as Haggard home and Nickel The 2's resort and golf course that started in the middle 20th century, which again the historical newspaperers can sort out no doubt, that's needed.
