AfD nomination of Friendship book

[edit]

Friendship book, an article you created, has been nominated for deletion. We appreciate your contributions. However, an editor does not feel that Friendship book satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in the nomination space (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and the Wikipedia deletion policy). Your opinions on the matter are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Friendship book and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~). You are free to edit the content of Friendship book during the discussion but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion discussion. Thank you. Eliz81(talk)(contribs) 18:07, 10 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome

[edit]

Welcome, Chuck! Especially looking forward to your contributions on pages related to Christianity. <>< tbc

(This has been moved from Talk:Chuck Smith)

Hi Chuck! Just wanted to thank you for inspiring me to read through Ignatius and Polycarp's letters so I could try to answer your question at Resurrection of Jesus Christ/Talkarchive. Hope that helps. --Wesley

Hey Chuck, your reverting of Greyhound racing convinces me that there is some type of bug in the wiki software. Somebody already reverted the page from the "3333333333" stub. Check out the original stub again, and then try to view another revision. Do this a couple of times and you will see "33333333" displayed as the "current" version (even though the text is fine in edit mode). I am having the same problem with the Beryllium article -- I will make some changes, preview them, make sure they render OK, then save. But then what I see displayed is a previous revision of the page -- even though the code for the page looks fine in edit mode. This same thing happens even when I totally disable caching on several different browsers on both my wintel and lintel boxen. --User:maveric149

Hey Chuck, on your page you have this:

"I don't think I'm very good at writing content unless I'm really passionate about something (which I'm told I'm not supposed to do on here)."

I beg to differ. I'm very passionate about film, especially Ingmar Bergman, Joel & Ethan Coen, & Francois Truffaut films, but I just try to keep my opinion or any unverifiable info out of my writing (I don't always succeed, and people invariably come and mop up, as should be done). It's just a different kind of writing than most people are used to; have you kept at it? (I will note that I've started avoiding anything explicitly political--those discussions quickly become more than they're worth, IMHO). just curious, Koyaanis Qatsi, Sunday, March 31, 2002

Well, I've probably written half of the articles about Esperanto (meaning half of each article, not half of the number of articles)  :-) so I do keep writing about stuff I'm passionate about, although I do occasionally get beat on for editing pages too boldly! (which is good) I have to admit though that most of my energy lately has been going into the Esperanto wikipedia and then I write about whatever I feel like.  :-) It's quite interesting seeing a wikipedia through its early stages of development again... --Chuck Smith

Which reminds me: Hey Chuck, are you going to the ELNA Kongreso in Sacramento in June? We should have a Vikipedio presentation or something... Brion VIBBER

No, but I nominate you to speak about the Vikipedio at the ELNA Kongreso. :o) I am however planning to go to the Internacia Junulara Kongreso and the Universala Kongreso in Brazil this year (and I hope to speak about the Vikipedio at the UK). Afterwards I plan to travel Europe for a year using Esperanto as my main language (like Amanda Higley)... I'm gonna save a fortune since I won't to pay for lodging because of the Pasporta Servo.  :) --Chuck Smith
Ooh, sounds like fun! That unruly thing called airfare is keeping me close to home for the forseeable future, alas. I'll try to come up with something for the EK, hopefully based around the brochure-to-be. I may want to bring some pamphlets in English as well for people to give to friends, relatives, strangers on the street. All Wikipedia is good wikipedia, no? Brion VIBBER
Well, through the Esperanto travel services you can get roundtrip airfare to Brazil and back for less than $800. It's quite amazing really. I'm also subscribing to a travel service that does the same thing in English, but it cost me $100 for a lifetime membership.  :-( Probably at the seminar you will want to show how easy the wikipedia is to edit as well as showing some of the other language wikipedias.
Now that I'm thinking about it, would a multilingual wiki about Esperanto work well? I mean would it be possible to have multiple languages in one wiki? We need more national language resources about Esperanto for people who don't yet speak the language. What do you think? --Chuck Smith
Hmm, that could be interesting. Might be nice to have something to supplement or take the place of the aging Multlingva Informcentro... Could link to the wikipedia articles too. :) Brion VIBBER
How would supporting, say, Russian, Japanese and Chinese on the same wiki work? --Chuck Smith
The magic of Unicode should help that immensely. I'll have to play with things a bit to make the interface language user-selectable, though. --Brion VIBBER

Important note for all sysops: There is a bug in the administrative move feature that truncates the moved history and changes the edit times. Please do not use this feature until this bug is fixed. More information can be found in the talk of Brion VIBBER and maveric149. Thank you. --maveric149

Howdy Chuck. Since you seem to have an interest in the mathematics articles, I wanted to call to your attention the WikiProject we're developing at Wikipedia:WikiProject Mathematics, which attempts to provide some standards and goals for math articles. As requested, I've moved your watchlist to the new account name. --Brion 15:38 Dec 3, 2002 (UTC)

Chuck I've seen on your user page that you're recently trying to teach yourself Dutch and Slovene. What a two different languages you've picked. Since Slovene is my native, I am just informing you here if you need any assistance regarding Slovene, you're very wellcome. I can give you some if needed. I am trying to write in Slovene Wikipedia, but it is still in swathe, mainly because of its interface -- where there's a lot of work to be done. Get my best regards. Lep pozdrav in živjo... And finally thank you for correcting Crystal's words about Slovene. --XJamRastafire 00:38 Jan 10, 2003 (UTC)~

How have you decided that the X-System, esperanto.org, and Esperanto newsgroups are "irrelevant" to an article on Esperanto? Konfuzite via, Oliver P. 15:37 Feb 17, 2003 (UTC)

The X-System belongs on the article about Esperanto grammar, where it is now. Esperanto.net is much superior to Esperanto.org, so it is not necessary here (plus it seems unprofessional). The Esperanto newsgroups are not useful to English speakers who can't speak Esperanto and just want information about Esperanto. If they speak Esperanto, they can find out about them in the Esperanto Wikipedia. --Chuck SMITH
Ah, you meant "unneeded", rather than "irrelevant". ("Irrelevant" would mean that they didn't relate to the subject of the article, which isn't the case here.) The writing system is orthography, not grammar. Tell you what, can I put a link in Esperanto to Esperanto orthography, and move x-system there? The x-system article spends half its time talking about Unicode and the h-system anyway! As for the newsgroups, alt.esperanto.beginner and alt.esperanto.komencanto are specifically for beginners, who would be scared off by the Esperanto Wikipedia. Heck, I'm scared of it, and I became an Esperantist more than eight years ago. :) Any objections to my putting those two back in? -- Oliver P. 16:41 Feb 17, 2003 (UTC)
Great idea! You can go ahead and put the newsgroups back in, but perhaps they would go better under Esperanto culture... I don't know. In Wikipedia, we try to keep our external links down to a minimum, just to the really outstanding webpages. I even removed the link to esperanto.org from the English page of esperanto.net, because of its lack of professionalism. We used to have 12 external links from this Wikipedia article and I weeded it down to the 4 most essential and now I see more popping up... Also, don't be scared of the Esperanto Wikipedia, we don't bite.  ;-) --Chuck SMITH

Chuck,

In response to your invitation to talk via Instant Messenger, I'm sorry but I don't know what that is. I've vaguely heard the name, but it's not something I'd know how to have access to.

As regards the specifics of your comment: Talk:Esperanto culture is probably the place for me to reply, which I'll do probably fairly soon.

RFC pages on VfD

[edit]

Should RFC pages be placed on VfD to be deleted? I'm considering removing Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Slrubenstein, Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Jwrosenzweig and Wikipedia:Requests for comment/John Kenney from WP:VFD. Each of them was listed by CheeseDreams. Your comments on whether I should do this would be appreciated. - Ta bu shi da yu 03:28, 10 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Article Licensing

[edit]

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 2000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1
I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

OR

Option 2
I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" with "MultiLicensePD". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. -- Ram-Man (comment| talk)

Image:1963-BHHk.jpg

[edit]

Hi! Thanks for uploading Image:1963-BHHk.jpg. I notice it currently doesn't have an image copyright tag. Could you add one to let us know its copyright status? (You can use gfdl if you release it under the GFDL, or fairuse if you claim fair use, etc.) If you don't know what any of this means, just let me know where you got the images and I'll tag them for you. Thanks so much, Quadell (talk) (help)[[]] 02:25, Dec 20, 2004 (UTC)

Nice coincidence

[edit]

Hey Chuck, I know you! I met you in the train from Utrecht to Rotterdam about 1 1/2 years ago and we had a lengthy talk about Esperanto. Unfortunately I haven't become a real Esperantist (yet); recently I went to the IEA bookshop however and bought an Asterix comic in Esperanto. I see you're doing a lot here and of course at eo: - have become a wikimaniac myself recently, but not here. My English is too poor, you know. Caesarion 19:23, 31 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Esperanto Wikipedia deletions

[edit]

Hi Chuck,

someone has uploaded copyrighted material to the Esperanto Wikipedia. I was looking for a way to list it for deletion but there is no eo: section at the Multilingual speedy deletions page at Meta. Is there a deletion template for eo:? If so, it should be listed there. If not, I guess I should just list the file in question itself, right?. TerokNor 21:00, 27 March 2006 (UTC)

Could you tell me what the article in question was? --Chuck SMITH 08:35, 18 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I was clearing out Wikipedia:Wikipedians/Pennsylvania. I added this template to your page. Feel free to remove it, and thanks for understanding. --evrik 04:33, 18 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've added the "prod" template to the article Calgary Esperanto Centre, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but I don't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and I've explained why in the deletion notice (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia, or, if you disagree with the notice, discuss the issues at Talk:Calgary Esperanto Centre. Removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, but the article may still be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached, or if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria. Brianyoumans 07:25, 29 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

 • There is not really a discussion under the proposed deletion process - you just tag the article for deletion, and after five days an admin will look at the article and either delete it or decide that it needs more discussion. I'm not sure what the usual procedure is for recreating an article deleted like this; there is a deletion review process, or you could just recreate it. JSPWiki a "core application in the Glassfish Application Server" - please explain

[edit]

Hello,

In your revision of the JSPWiki article as of 05:28, 27 June 2006, you added the following sentence: "JSPWiki is included as a core application in the Glassfish Application Server." This sentence has persisted to this day. Could you explain what you meant by this sentence? I've installed Glassfish on my computer, and subsequently performed two system-wide searches for "jspwiki" and "JSPWiki", respectively, which have yielded no result. Your old user name and my further work on your user page

[edit]

Hi Chuck, I've been exploring very old edits of Wikipedia and found a username you used in 2001, ChuckSmith (talk · contribs). I've just created an account with that name, and redirected the user and talk pages of that old account to your current user and talk pages. Since you abandoned the ChuckSmith account before the MediaWiki software was installed on Wikipedia, it was left wide open and malcontents might have been able to register it. It's now possible to import edits from the Nostalgia Wikipedia, so I've imported all the edits that were made by the ChuckSmith account to the current English Wikipedia database. Some of those edits involved your old user page, so that's why I was moving it around again. Hope you don't mind. Graham87 12:52, 5 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Esperanto music is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Esperanto music (2nd nomination) until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on good quality evidence, and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion template from the top of the article. Ten Pound Hammer(What did I screw up now?) 19:29, 13 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Toki Pona is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Toki Pona (4th nomination) until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion notice from the top of the article. Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 16:45, 15 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The article Friendship book has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No sources. Could be a total invention.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. Notification of pending suspension of administrative permissions due to inactivity

[edit]

Information icon Following a community discussion in June 2011, consensus was reached to provisionally suspend the administrative permissions of users who have been inactive for one year (i.e. administrators who have not made any edits or logged actions in more than one year). As a result of this discussion, your administrative permissions will be removed pending your return if you do not return to activity within the next month. If you wish to have these permissions reinstated should this occur, please post to the Wikipedia:Bureaucrats' noticeboard and the userright will be restored per the re-sysopping process (i.e. as long as the attending bureaucrats are reasonably satisfied that your account has not been compromised, that your inactivity did not have the effect of evading scrutiny of any actions which might have led to sanctions, and that you have not been inactive for a three-year period of time). If you remain inactive for a three-year period of time, including the present year you have been inactive, you will need to request reinstatement at WP:RFA. This removal of access is procedural only, and not intended to reflect negatively upon you in any way. We wish you the best in future endeavors, and thank you for your past administrative efforts. Extended confirmed protection

[edit]

Hello, Chuck SMITH. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

 • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
 • A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.
This message was sent to the administrators' mass message list. To opt-out of future messages, please remove yourself from the list. 17:49, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins

[edit]

Hello,

Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. A new user right for New Page Patrollers

[edit]

Hi Chuck SMITH.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:47, 15 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
