Wikipedia is not a resume hosting site
[edit]See WP:NOTRESUME. Do not link to your LinkedIn account again. Although some personal content is allowed on user pages, this is to help users show in what ways they can help this site -- it is not a means to promote themselves. Ian.thomson (talk) 10:33, 8 August 2017 (UTC)
Hi Sir, I am very new to this venue. What I put was fact and not self indulgence or banter. In all truth I'm not even certain I'd like to be on here any longer as it's not user friendly and after looking at your comment and home page I truly believe that you have targeted me for absolutely no reason... although had the comment been truly legitimate I would have no issue with it and happily take it down. As far as I'm aware this is a sign up for members when in individuals can meet and learn about one another. I have been in my profession since I was 15 as a bodyguard downtown Toronto. My profession is my life. Should this be unacceptable I will kindly decline any further dealings with Wikipedia. Best Regards, Chris Hudson
- I "target" any user who uses the site to promote their career or business. Something along the lines of "I work in (field) and am very passionate about it" would have been acceptable but your first attempt at an userpage was just your LinkedIn profile (with the summary from that apparently misplaced in the edit summary field). The language used in that summary was the sort used to advertise oneself and one's services in a CV. Your second edit to your user page simply copied your career titles from your LinkedIn page (as if you were trying to duplicate your LinkedIn profile on this site). This is obviously not LinkedIn, it is an encyclopedia.
- Being passionate about your career is not a problem: using promotional language (or not understanding the difference between promotional and descriptive language) is the problem.
- If you are looking for a place to promote your services and host your CV, try LinkedIn -- I hear that's what they're there for. Ian.thomson (talk) 20:29, 8 August 2017 (UTC)
Ok, I understand where the issue lies with the use of linkedin, but I simply thought it would be applied as a reference as to who I am and what I do for anyone whom I do communicate with (ie. you :) ;all I know is work, always have. I do understand that you just returned from Colombia! Its a beautiful country yes! Regardless, how do I present to members who I am? That was my attempt, not to 'advertise'. Also, how do I use this properly??? I wasn't even sure how to communicate until you replied... I'm still unsure how to tell you the truth. Thank you for correcting / guiding me sir.
- I've never been to South America, much less Colombia. Also, see WP:OUTING.
- Some of your comments already here are acceptable, like
I have been in my profession since I was 15 as a bodyguard downtown Toronto. My profession is my life.
A user can generally state what field they are in, what their interests are, what kind of background they have, and their enthusiasm for those things to give other users an indication of how that user might help the site. A user might also list any employers we have articles about (to be up front about a potential conflict of interest). For example, a user who works in IT might be asked to help with computer related articles, a user who likes Harry Potter might be asked to help with those articles, a user from India might be asked to help with India related articles, and so on. Many users edit topics here they have no interest in outside of Wikipedia. Some users don't actually write. They might fix grammar and formatting, take pictures, or protect the site from vandalism (especially the Counter-Vandalism Unit). Ian.thomson (talk) 21:46, 8 August 2017 (UTC)
Sorry if I was incorrect about you having been returning from Colombia... The first time I received your writing I may have misinterpreted something I saw that stated "can't wait to be back in the US" as well as the time in Colombia and flag beside. Back to what I put on... I'm clueless how to remove it. Please help.
What Wikipedia is
[edit]Wikipedia is an encyclopedia.
All Wikipedia does is summarize professionally-published mainstream academic or journalistic sources. If you are not interested in doing that or in helping others to do that, you should reconsider whether you've come to the right site or not.
Your edits really give the impression that Wikipedia is not the appropriate choice for whatever it is you were looking to accomplish here. WP:OUTLETDIR lists a variety of website that may fit your goals better.

Editing with a conflict of interest
[edit]Wikipedia has pretty strict guidelines regarding editing with a conflict of interest.
As I've explained before, this site does not allow users to promote their careers or businesses. This is part of a broader general principle against self-promotion.
In short, it's highly discouraged that anyone makes or edits articles about themselves, their families, or anyone they have close ties to (be they familial, financial, or whatever). Ian.thomson (talk) 03:15, 13 May 2018 (UTC)
