WikiCup 2015 May newsletter
The second round one has all wrapped up, and round three has now begun! Congratulations to the 34 contestants who have made it through, but well done and thank you to all contestants who took part in our second round. Leading the way overall was Cas Liber (submissions) in Group B with a total of 777 points for a variety of contributions including Good Articles on Corona Borealis and Microscopium - both of which received the maximum bonus.
Special credit must be given to a number of high importance articles improved during the second round.
- Coemgenus (submissions) was one of several users who worked on improving Ulysses S. Grant. Remember, you do not need to work on an article on your own - as long as each person has completed significant work on the article during 2015, multiple competitors can claim the same article.
- Cwmhiraeth (submissions) took Dragonfly to Good Article for a 3x bonus - and if that wasn't enough, they also took Damselfly there as well for a 2x bonus.
- LeftAire (submissions) worked up Alexander Hamilton to Good Article for the maximum bonus. Hamilton was one of the founding fathers of the United States and is a level 4 vital article.
The points varied across groups, with the lowest score required to gain automatic qualification was 68 in Group A - meanwhile the second place score in Group H was 404, which would have been high enough to win all but one of the other Groups! As well as the top two of each group automatically going through to the third round, a minimum score of 55 was required for a wildcard competitor to go through. We had a three-way tie at 55 points and all three have qualified for the next round, in the spirit of fairness. The third round ends on June 28, with the top two in each group progressing automatically while the remaining 16 highest scorers across all four groups go through as wildcards. Good luck to all competitors for the third round! Figureskatingfan (talk · contribs · email), Miyagawa (talk · contribs · email) and Sturmvogel 66 (talk · contribs · email) 16:28, 4 May 2015 (UTC)

Anime query
Hi, I don't want to pile on the agony but have just glanced through some recent contributions in case of a repeat of the Rationalobserver episode referred to in the current ANI thread re: KK87. Is this right? Is this, mentioned in external links, not a reliable source? Indeed, is the Japanese source that was actually cited reliable?
Is there some sort of "redirect to list" consensus, as there is for non-notable schools? If not, is there any point in redirecting, bearing in mind WP:NLIST and WP:V? They did remove the entry from the list. If it is acceptable then I can see us having redirects, for example, for every single crime genre, romance genre, historical genre, historical romance genre (!) novel etc that has ever been published.
Sorry to load all of these questions on you. I'm not familiar with the subject area but am aware that it has a lot of problematic articles. If your response to the first of my questions is "no" then there will be no need to respond to the others ;) - Sitush (talk) 06:49, 29 May 2015 (UTC)
- @Sitush: It should probably gets its own article because it was produced and even picked up at a critical time in the industry then edited, redubbed and marketed by Kitty Media. Currently it is supposedly under Media Blasters - a complex history there. I am not sure why it is named in apparent homage to Megadeth's Symphony of Destruction. Don't get me wrong - notability is not of how important something is, but does enough proper sources exist to make an article. The key problems are a lack of development details and the subject matter (easy to cover up instead of fix). The ANN encyclopedia is not usually seen as a reliable source, but there is no doubt to the info. ChrisGualtieri (talk) 14:39, 29 May 2015 (UTC)
- That's fine, thanks. If it should have its own article then the redirect needs to be reverted. I trust your judgement. - Sitush (talk) 14:58, 29 May 2015 (UTC)
- @Sitush: Thank you, a lot of things are just a matter of who will do the work. Many of our long-standing yet ultimately redirected or deleted content falls into this place. Few people actually go through the trouble of creating useless and irrelevant articles. I found a review in Clements 3rd edition of AE. Clements is an apologist in many ways, but I am glad he cleared up in the last 5 years or so. Also... Knowledgekid thought the translator was vandalism... lol... didn't even check before removing. ChrisGualtieri (talk) 15:08, 29 May 2015 (UTC)
- You might want to advise KK of the issue because I doubt I am flavour of the month. It looks like they'll have much more time to spend on articles soon. - Sitush (talk) 15:27, 29 May 2015 (UTC)
- @Sitush: Seems you are correct - I went to his page and saw him removing a ref because it was dead. Despite it being a redundant and easily replaceable. This is why I dislike WP:ANIME - people do not know the language and they care little because its "pop-culture"... its just not a fun place to edit. ChrisGualtieri (talk) 15:47, 29 May 2015 (UTC)
- Anime/manga means nothing to me, I'm afraid. Wouldn't stop me copyediting the occasional article, though, as I did for Herut yesterday ( also a topic area of no interest to me, although I did recognise a few of the names and that is more than I could say for anime!) I think the problem with a lot of pop-culture stuff, and especially the ones rooted in languages other than English, is that they attract fans who really do not know how this place works and very often do not care. There is no easy solution to that.
I wonder if KK knows of the Wayback Machine - very useful for deadlinks. - Sitush (talk) 15:54, 29 May 2015 (UTC)
- Given how he didn't think about the context on the Miyazaki one... he is aware but lacks the comprehension of what it was even saying. I do a lot of older films and such - its a quiet environment and I know that this is a historical record of something which may be very unlikely to be "found". Wikipedia is less than 1% done... yet we fight about such stuff... wasting our time on simple things while more obvious flaws exist. Go figure. ChrisGualtieri (talk) 04:24, 1 June 2015 (UTC)

Hi. I've started this one. I'll be DYKing it, but I wondered if you wanted to further expand it and take it to GA?♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:37, 1 June 2015 (UTC)
- I have almost no idea on these different films and how to give them a better coverage suitable for listing at GA. I still want to focus on the Thanhouser films because they are still being discovered and are more accessible then others. I do not have the $1500 set of books about the D.W Griffith films for the Bioscope company. ChrisGualtieri (talk) 16:04, 1 June 2015 (UTC)
- You can always request books through a wiki grant and not have to pay. Would you be interested?♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:07, 1 June 2015 (UTC)
- Didn't know that, but I haven't fully utilized the Macmillan books yet... I intend to make the most of such things if it costs money. ChrisGualtieri (talk) 04:27, 2 June 2015 (UTC)

Yes, anything up to £2000 here. Mine was approved here. You just have to pay £5 to join WMUK. You could request books for silent films if you need them.♦ Dr. Blofeld 07:36, 2 June 2015 (UTC)
- Given that most of the articles will be of very low views - yeah, I don't entirely know if that'd be a worthy use. I have so much to do on the backlogs anyways. I was crushing the GAN section of the Wiki with the Thanhouser films. And if I was to do such a thing, it would be for Anime and Manga which gets hundreds of thousands of views.
