Pentecostalism in Africa

[edit]

To start off I will include a short summery of Pentecostalism movement in Africa. I will state that the faith began at Azusa and made its way to Liberia and South Africa. I’ll also emphasize the role that evangelization plays in the Pentecostal faith here.

Origins

[edit]

Origins/early Pentecostal missions. Where it began- Azusa Street. Liberia (summer 1906), South Africa (1908), etc. Spread due to the Apostolic Faith Newspaper.

Recent History

[edit]

Here I want to talk about how Pentecostalism “is fast becoming one of the most significant expressions of Christianity on the continent, especially in Africa’s cities.”[1] Newer Pentecostal faiths emerging. What current Pentecostals are like and where they are.

Leaders

[edit]

Here I want to talk about some of the important missionaries that were sent to Africa. I want to explain how many of them went over ill prepared yet they were still successful at converting souls to the Pentecostal faith. Emphasis on Liberia, summer 1906: Lucy Farrow, Mr. and Mrs. Julia Hutchins, and others; South Africa, 1908: John Lake and Thomas Hezmalhalch.

Movements/”Denominations"

[edit]

Here I want to bring up the different movements such as Pentecostal Zionist Movement (south Africa), African Instituted Churches (AICs), Assemblies of God (AG), etc. that were mentioned in Espinosa’s book. In addition to describing several movements I would like to emphasize how loose the term “Pentecostal” is. Pentecostalism has come to encompass many different indigenous Christian movements (the church is not universal- is this too much of a personal opinion to share??).

Beliefs/Charisms

[edit]

What unites Pentecostals? Here I will explain the different Pentecostal beliefs such as the baptism of the Holy Spirit, speaking in tongues, healing, etc. I want to explain why these all played an important role in the spread of Pentecostalism. I also would like to include some information on the Pentecostal stance on racial equality.
