Your Teahouse question

Hi CherryGonzo77. I was going to post this at the Teahouse, but the thread you started actually got archived before I clicked "Publish changes"; so, I thought I'd post it here instead.

I'm not condoning any of the actions of Captain Raju, and do feel that adding that particular warning to your user talk page was not warranted. At the same time, please be careful of using words like WP:BULLY, etc. when it comes to other editors. Wikipedia takes things like bullying and harrassment quite seriously, but not everything that happens on Wikipedia (e.g. having a user warning, even a inappropriate user warning, added to your user talk page) should be immediately called bullying. One thing about this edit was that it was made using a automated tool, probably at the same time of lots of similar types of edits were made. The editors who use such tools are just as responsible for their edits as you and I, but they tend to make so many edits in such a small span of time that they rarely stop to look at each individual edit being made. Edits made by new accounts or accounts which aren't very active often get miscorrectly flagged as being a problem when they're not, particularly when there's no edit summary or not much of an edit summary provided. This happens quite a lot (or at least more often than it probably should) and a corresponding user warning may be also be automatically added by the same tool, once again without much reflection by the editor pushing the buttons. Wikipedia has more than six million articles and only so many volunteers; so, automated scripts, bots, tools, etc. have become pretty important ways to try and keep track of all the constant editing to all of these articles. So, my take on this is not that it's a case of someone singling you out o bully, but more of a case of someone being given special tools to try and help keep Wikipedia free of certain types of problems not being careful/responsible in how they are using them. Once again, this intended to be more of an explanation for how this thing sometimes happens, and how you're likely going to run across the same type of thing again.

Anyway, I get you were possibly frustrated when you posted this post on Captain Raju's user talk page, but it's the type of post that has more of chance of making things worse than better. Even when frustrated or angry, try to remember WP:CIVIL when engaging others who you feel have done you some wrong because it will at least reflect better on you if the other side decides to ratchet things up and take things to another level. You're a fairly new account and the longer you edit the more likely you're going to run across people who either disagree with your edits, some so much that they might add a user warning to your user talk page, or just are otherwise a bit unpleasent to interact with. Sometimes you have to just take that for what it is, and just move on and ignore them. You don't need to respond to everything posted on your user talk page, and you can pretty much remove anything you find annoying, but you don't really have the same control over the things you post on other's user talk pages.

Finally, for future reference, the place to report any concerns you may have about another editor's behavior is generally Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents (aka ANI). You can ask for help about such things at the Teahouse and there are admininstrators (like Nick Moyes) who are also Teahouse hosts who may repond and try to help out, but ANI is generally considered the best place to try and get such assistance. Going to ANI, however, is generally only considered to be the last resort for serious problems when other attempts to try and resolve the matter haven't led to any real change in the situation. So, before you do go to ANI, you might want to take a look at Wikipedia:ANI advice to give you some idea about what to expect. ANI discussions tend to be unpleasent and often those complaining about others also find their behavior being scrutinized just as much as the other person's. -- Marchjuly (talk) 06:21, 3 February 2020 (UTC)
