How did this not get approved? All I did was link Jimmy's name to the page where it mentions his name. Also I'm pretty sure he won or was nominated for an award for his work on It's a SpongeBob Christmas! Please explain. Chadwick Berk (talk) 21:00, 29 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Names on awards

[edit]

We report what is in the sources. For awards there is a reference and the names listed in that reference are the names that go in the article. A lot of people don't want official recognitions to be made to a diminutive of their name even if known that way by others in informal situations. Geraldo Perez (talk) 19:29, 18 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I understand. Thank you very much for your input and I will work on finding sound sources where writing Jimmy Lifton's biographical page. Chadwick Berk (talk) 19:51, 18 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Generally sources for credits info is how he is listed in the work itself. He gets to chose how he is credited and we should respect his choices there. He may chose to use different names on different projects. IMDb generally gets this right for released stuff but if you have access to actual credits that is better. There will be official text on the award as issued and for award info we should report that. I checked some of them and "James" is how he is listed on the ones I checked but I think he may have used "Jimmy" on one of them. Need to go to the source to be sure. Whatever you do make sure you can back it up with references, really important for bio info as we need to get this right. Geraldo Perez (talk) 20:09, 18 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
If you do plan on writing an article see Wikipedia:Your first article. Don't base any bio article on IMDb though as IMDb is not considered a reliable source for bio info by Wikipedia. Geraldo Perez (talk) 20:19, 18 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good. Thank you very much for this info and if I have any questions at all I will be sure to ask you first to save time. You have been a great help. Just out of curiosity, why is IMDb considered a reliable source for crediting but not for using on biography pages? Chadwick Berk (talk) 20:24, 18 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
IMDb it not considered a reliable source for anything really, even credits, as it is generally edited by anonymous people and IMDb's fact checking process is cursory. See WP:RS/IMDB. Credit info on IMDb is usually extracted from the projects themselves by said anonymous people and they usually get it mostly correct and it is less critical than bio info so we generally just assume that people get it right. Lots of articles just extract credit info from IMDb as a convenience. The actual source, though, is the credit info in the released project itself, not what is in IMDb, and actual credits from the project itself will always override what is in IMDb. Geraldo Perez (talk) 20:37, 18 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Interesting. So when now creating the bio page can I use IMDb as a source for credits or when dealing with a bio in general IMDb is totally off limits? Chadwick Berk (talk) 20:59, 18 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
A good example of what I'm asking is Superman Returns. Jimmy Lifton is credited on IMDb in the sound department as the ADR facility for the film so he did have a part in the making of the film. Can I not credit him using that? http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0348150/fullcredits?ref_=tt_cl_sm#cast See Jimmy Lifton under Sound Department. Chadwick Berk (talk) 21:06, 18 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Create a bio using reliable sources that are not IMDb. You will need multiple articles that talk about him in some detail, not just passing mention, for a bio article on Wikipedia to be accepted, it will be deleted if you can't at least show WP:BASIC. After that hurdle is met the IMDb credit info can be used to to create a credits section of the bio. An article will not be accepted if the only content comes from IMDb. Understood. Chadwick Berk (talk) 01:06, 19 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
