Hurricane Katrina
Sorry about the late response. Anyway, I think the picture is of relatively good quality quite informative, but I'm not an expert on hurricanes (I just thought the previous image I nominated was impressive). Anyway, if you would like to nominate it, I would be glad to help you, or even co-nominate. First however, a few questions: Are you sure that it's a free image? Second, do you know how to convert it to a .ogg? If you can't convert it, that's fine, but I'll have to find someone who can. I've tried before with other videos and failed, so I'd have to find someone more qualified that myself. In all in all, though, it's a great image (to my untrained eye). - So, what's your opinion on the matter? NauticaShades 00:27, 26 August 2008 (UTC)

- Sounds good. I've uploaded it here, and am just waiting for an editor of Hurricane Katrina to tell me if it's appropriate for the article. NauticaShades 01:13, 26 August 2008 (UTC)

Re: Earthquake
Actually, I started college yesterday. :P Um, to tell you the truth, I will be taking a break from reviewing articles, as they are a "big" hassle to deal with. I'm sorry, I hope you can understand. :( -- ThinkBlue (Hit BLUE) 15:08, 26 August 2008 (UTC)

- I've went ahead and taken this to the adoption page. Is there any way to have it notify me of changes there (other than watchlisting)? Kind of like when I get messages on the talk page. ClosedEyesSeeing (talk) 14:16, 27 August 2008 (UTC)

Just thought I'd reply to your offer as well. I think it'd be great - I second ClosedEyes' gratefulness! I'm currently a Geology student, so the WikiProjects you're a part of are an interest to me as well. The technicalities of Wikipedia are still a little over my head, and I'd love to learn exactly how to go about contributing to the project. Dougano (talk) 17:39, 27 August 2008 (UTC)

Project News | Article Alerts
The Reboot of Wikiproject New Jersey has certainly stirred up some new activity at the project. Discussion on several improvements and new initiatives have been going on at the talk page. There has been an involved discussion regarding our 117 unassessed articles, especially those on municipalities. The current goal is to review and assess all 566 New Jersey muncipality articles by September 30. A suggestion has been made to intiate Wikipedia Takes New Jersey to begin clearing the large backlog of articles needing photos. Let's all grab our cameras and head out into the vast wilds of the Garden State. Town Halls, High Schools, Historic Places - every article deserves a picture. |
The following articles may be in need of attention:

WPNJ member Mm40 has volunteered to coordinate a new WPNJ Collaboration project. It's been a while since we used the NJCOTW and new volunteers are needed. Join the discussion to volunteer.
Battle of Trenton was recently proposed as a Featured Article candidate. It was not promoted, but has now been nominated for A-Class review through the Military History WikiProject. Take a look at their A-Class FAQ. As we need to set up our own process for reviewing A-Class articles, it may be worth watching the process. |
Please welcome the following new members to WikiProject New Jersey:

Reboot progress report | Help Wanted
The redesign has been well received. There are still some things left to do. This newsletter was one big check mark off the list. Hopefully this can be continued on a regular basis. There are literally thousands of articles in Category:New Jersey that have not been tagged as part of the project, and stub sorting hasn't been run in 10 months. We will need to identify some friendly bot operators to help with these projects. An outreach department (which includes the newsletter) needs to be formalized. Creating an invitation template for easy placement on userpages will also be part of that effort.
There are lots of best practices described at the WikiProject Council with ideas of how to make our project more responsive, welcoming, active, and effective. Task forces? Peer review? Other ideas welcome! |

Editor's Notes | |||
I just wanted to say that the response to my bold makeover of WPNJ has been gratifying, but nothing will improve the project as much as more activity, and that means more members. There are lots of things to do in this new setup, and everyone with an interest should be able to find a way to contribute to the collaboration. I want to thank you all for the patience, the appreciation, and the effort. - Jim Miller

Re:RJH
Probably the best idea. I'd ask him myself but I've already asked him way too many times. Serendipodous 14:24, 27 August 2008 (UTC)
Would you mind giving the article a thorough copyedit before Seren and I send it to FAC? Thanks, --Lord₪Sunday 13:17, 27 August 2008 (UTC)
Not Serendipodous this time? ;-) Most of the writing seems fine. I found a few more issues:
* Per "Although the numbers of objects in the Kuiper belt and the scattered disc are thought to be more or less equal...", to the reader this may be comparing apples and oranges. It may be more helpful to compare the net masses of the two.
"Due to its unstable nature, astronomers now consider the scattered disc to be the place of origin for most periodic comets observed in the Solar System, with the centaurs, a population of icy bodies between Jupiter and Neptune, an intermediate stage between the scattered disc and the periodic comets." Is this trying to say that comets migrate inward from the scattered disc to become centaurs, then are perturbed into periodic comets? This was not clarified until near the end of the article.- Please reference the last two sentences of the lead paragraph in the "Subdivisions of trans-Neptunian space" section.
- One done, the other is more Serendipodous-type wording, I think he can fix that better than I. --Lord₪Sunday 00:16, 28 August 2008 (UTC)
- The lead says "perihelion distances near 35" AU, then "approached by scattered objects is less than 40 AU, but they can reach distances well beyond 100 AU". The body says "Scattered disc objects come as close to the sun as Neptune (30 AU) but at their farthest distances, their orbits reach beyond the edge of the Kuiper belt (50 AU)." Could these be modified to communicate more consistent ranges?
- Likewise, the lead says "inclinations as high as 40°" while the body says, "the orbits of scattered objects can be inclined as much as 45° from the ecliptic." Later it says that, "(ranging up to 40° from the ecliptic)". Which is correct?
- I'll leave that to Serendipodous. --Lord₪Sunday 23:19, 27 August 2008 (UTC)
* Is the stub sub-section "Resonances" needed? Couldn't that just be merged with the prior text? Or are there plans to expand it?
- Could this be referenced: "a second posits that the scattering took place relatively quickly, during Neptune's early migration epoch."
- Um, I'm still waiting for Serendipodous to ref that. it's been three weeks, but he says he's busy, So I'll bother him about that next time. --Lord₪Sunday 23:23, 27 August 2008 (UTC)
The "Beyond Pluto" refernce needs an author.- The format of authors in the citations section are inconsistent. E.g. "Marc W. Buie" vs. "Schmadel, Lutz D." vs. "RA Gomes". Perhaps some cleanup can be performed for consistency?
- Let someone at FAC deal with that. I have failexd trying that one. --Lord₪Sunday 00:08, 28 August 2008 (UTC)
Lykawka/Mukai shows some odd formatting: Kobe volume=189
* Hahn (2005) and Thommes (2002) have an arXiv value in parentheses. Is this needed? I'm not sure most readers will know what that means. The Hahn article has doi: 10.1086/452638.
Thanks.—RJH (talk) 17:51, 27 August 2008 (UTC)

Hi LS,
Thank you for adding my name to the FAC nom of Scattered disc. I know you wanted to reward me for the work I put into it. I really think that Serendipodous put in more work, though...
Arranging the nominator(s) of a FAC is a delicate business. If someone's name is up there, they should be prepared to help defend/improve the nom. Moreover, all major contributors should be consulted before a nomination is made. Sometimes one person thinks an article is ready, but someone else may not.
You have done an awesome job, being so eager to help out. I hope you will continue to be wise enough to ask others for input, and to learn from them how things work on Wikipedia.

Don't mention it. I think I'll see if I can find any more problems with the article (I'm not much of a copyeditor or reviewer) and then I'll switch to Support. I can't wait to work on 2003 Bam with you, and I have added a bit, but I have FHB, M'ba, and 1964 Gabon at the top of my agenda. Dude; I think you need to relax
These things take time to do right. I don't get FAs for the sake of getting FAs. Right now my main priority is to get the Jupiter topic up and running, which means focusing on Moons of Jupiter and Atmosphere of Jupiter. Since I've done hardly any work on either, I don't expect to get an FA co-nom on either of them. But they're what needs to be done, so that's what I will do. Motto of the day
Hello, I notice you're using one of the {{motd}} templates, run by Wikipedia:Motto of the day. You may have noticed that some of the mottos recently have been followed by a date from 2006, or on occasion simply "Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia". The reason for this is that Motto of the day is in some very serious need of help. Participation in the project, which has never been especially high, has dropped considerably over this past summer, to the point we have had several days where no motto was scheduled to appear at all. Over the past several weeks, I've been the only editor scheduling mottos at all, but there aren't enough comments on some of these mottos to justify their use. If we do not get some help - and soon - your daily mottos will stop. In order for us to continue updating these templates for you, we need your help.
When you get a chance between your normal editing, could you stop by our nominations page and leave a few comments on some of the mottos there, especially those that do not have any comments yet? This works very simply; you read a motto, decide whether or not you like it, and post your opinion just below the motto. That's it - no experience required, just an idea of what you personally like and what you feel reflects Wikipedia and its community. If you do have past experience with the project, then please close some of the older nominations once they've got a decent consensus going. There are directions on the nominations page on how to do this.
If you have any questions, please let me know, or post on the project's talk page. I'm looking forward to reading your comments on the suggested mottos, and any additional suggestions you'd like to make. Until then, happy editing! Hersfold (t/a/c) 01:48, 4 September 2008 (UTC)

Synergy RfA
Hi LordSunday - when you write, on Synergy's RfA, that the "Diligent Terrier" comment was a huge thing for you, are you referring to the comment on Wikipedia Review? Synergy has said, and I have no reason to doubt him in this, that the comment by maggot3 on WR was not from him. The nature of some of the other comments by that same poster on WR would, alone, lead me to believe that the two people are unconnected. Do you have a reason to doubt Synergy's word on this, or were you referring to another comment entirely? Thanks, Avruch T 21:56, 6 September 2008 (UTC)

Yes, please review this. I'm very happy with the result of the FAC, and I'm glad to see you have a star at WP:WBFAN to your name :) Bam will be at least 5 times harder, as many more people died, but hey, the sources are available. - FAC is not a vote. Sandy will ultimately close it as a failure because I didn't access some of the sources from the original French version. Apparently, even though this is a wiki, we have to go above and beyond the reasonable skepticism of an article per WP:V and assume that Polaert was writing unreliably. We can never have the respect we want because anyone can edit. Ling's comment showed that s/he did very little research at all about my efforts with the article. Such is wikilife. Sigh. --I'm an Editorofthewiki[citation needed] 23:14, 11 September 2008 (UTC)
