[edit]Hey there, please read my message, again. I'm sorry if my feedback is different from what you've expected, but its just pointless if I cover the thruth. Cheers!! Imoeng 09:56, 6 August 2006 (UTC)

Welcome to Esperanza!
[edit]Welcome, Caroldermoid, to Esperanza! As you might know, all the Esperanzians share one important goal: the success of this encyclopedia. Within that, we then attempt to strengthen the community bonds, and be the "approachable" side of the project. All of our ideals are held in the Charter, the governing document of the association.
Now that you are a member you should read the guide to what to do now or you may be interested in some of our programs. A quite important program is Stressbusters, which seeks to support editors who have encountered any stress from their Wikipedia events, and are seeking to leave the project. So far, Esperanza can be credited with the support and retention of several users. We will send you newsletters to keep you up to date. Also, we have a calendar of special events, member birthdays, and other holidays that you can add to and follow.
In addition to these projects, several more missions of Esperanza are in development, and are currently being created at Esperanza/Proposals.
If you have any other questions, concerns, comments, or general ideas, Esperanzian or otherwise, know that you can always contact Natalya by email or talk page. Consider introducing yourself at the Esperanza talk page! Alternatively, you could communicate with fellow users via our IRC channel, #wikipedia-esperanza (which is also good for a fun chat or two :). If you're new to IRC, you may find help at an IRC tutorial. I thank you for joining Esperanza, and look forward to working with you in making Wikipedia a better place to work!
Adoption
[edit]Would you still like to be adopted? - Samsara (talk • contribs) 18:25, 3 October 2006 (UTC)
Yes! There is a lot to learn! --caroldermoid 22:06, 3 October 2006 (UTC)
- Okay, I've adopted you. Someone pointed out that having a link to your user and/or talk page in your signature is courteous, and asked me to remind you of this. Did you set up a custom signature for yourself? If not, you can just sign your posts with ~~~~ and your username and current date will appear when you save. Best, Samsara (talk • contribs) 10:56, 4 October 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for adopting me. To show you how much I need tutoring, I could not find anything in help about setting up a custom signature. :( So I copied yours to do this: Caroldermoid (talk• contribs) but it didn't really work, lol.
- But I didn't figure out how to save it as mine with the link to usertalk.
- --caroldermoid 22:45, 6 October 2006 (UTC)
- P.S. I won't be able to come to Wikipedia every day, depending on work schedule. Will that still work for you?
- PPS I went to your talk page to say thanks for adopting me, but I was totally intimidated by how fine so many of the contributions were on there. I would like to learn to do all that graphics and other cool stuff. I am also glad to be addopted by a biology admin!
- --caroldermoid 23:15, 6 October 2006 (UTC)
- Just let me know when you need help. I may have a look at your contributions from time to time and make some suggestions. At least that's what I guess would be expected of an adoptive wikiparent. As for your signature, you can go to "my preferences" at the top of the screen, and the second text field on the page that comes up should be the one for you to enter the signature you wish to save. To make a signature that is like mine, you could enter {{SUBST:user|Caroldermoid}}
- Samsara (talk • contribs) 15:01, 9 October 2006 (UTC)
- I had tried that method twice, but no joy before. Must have messed something up! It did seem to work by putting my siggie on my user page though. This time it worked!

Watchlists
[edit]Just wondering if you'd discovered the watchlist feature: Help:Watching pages. You may find it useful in keeping track of what edits other people make to your canine articles. - Samsara (talk • contribs) 10:50, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
- Yes, but I must admit I was watching more what people were doing to my categorization efforts, lol. I was not watching my canine articles. I was thinking I needed to hang around on wiki more before I expanded the main canine derm one, I guess.
- Also, having seen that my Dog Odor article needed categorization, I did that, although with some difficulty. (SEE Talk:Dog_odor) I have found the main Category Tree page, but need to ask: is there some efficient way to search for categories you have in mind? It takes a bit of work to find where some types of categories are hidden, lol.
- Thanks,
- --Caroldermoid (talk • contribs) 16:17, 15 October 2006 (UTC)
- You need to use Google for that kind of thing, e.g. [1] - Samsara (talk • contribs) 16:53, 15 October 2006 (UTC)
- Very cool on the google thing you showed me. Definitely something valuable to learn. I was wondering about the sluggishness at times. I wonder what the usage stats are? --Caroldermoid (talk • contribs) 22:49, 16 October 2006 (UTC)
- I think you found all the right cats. Some people do, however, find it easier to edit when it's formatted as one line per cat, and in alphabetic order. Replacing underscores with spaces is more of an aesthetic touch: [2]
- If you want to learn good editing practice, it can be useful to track the contributions of experienced editors, e.g. Special:Contributions/Saravask (hasn't recently edited, but is one of the most accomplished people I've seen around here; produces some of the best Featured Article material). - Samsara (talk • contribs) 16:59, 15 October 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks. I found that Wikipedia does have a search categories feature: http://wiki.riteme.site/w/index.php?title=Special%3AAllpages&from=opinion&namespace=14
- I will try to put categories in better order in the future. --Caroldermoid (talk • contribs) 19:24, 15 October 2006 (UTC)
- Well done. :) You may still wish to use Google to save Wikimedia some bandwidth, or at least at those times when Wikipedia gets sluggish. - Samsara (talk • contribs) 22:46, 15 October 2006 (UTC)
Re: Request for Feedback
[edit]Well, here's the story: I added the sort keys ("Terra, Daniel J."). Their sole purpose is to make e.g. the article in question appear under "T" in the category page, which is correct, instead of under "D". If you take a look at Category:Chemical engineers, you'll see that Daniel J. Terra is indeed under "T", while e.g. Daniel Fox is under "D" - because it lacks the sort key. This is perhaps a minor point, since it affects category browsing only (and only categories of people at that).
Also, underscores in category markup are not necessary - though they won't hurt either... GregorB 07:42, 17 October 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks. I will start adding the name tag, as you did it, after my categorizations. --Caroldermoid (talk • contribs) 22:26, 17 October 2006 (UTC)
Re: Categories
[edit]Well, Category:Lists of Victoria Cross recipients by name is supposed to contain list articles only, so I can't agree with this being on individual recipients pages. As for Category:Victoria Cross, it is made redundant by the subcat Category:Victoria Cross recipients, which the articles are already in. You can see by looking at these categories that the articles you've tagged are out of place. It's like placing someone in Category:Actors when they're already in Category:American actors or what have you. —Xezbeth 22:37, 22 October 2006 (UTC)
- Carol asked me to comment on this issue, and I have to agree that this is an area where Wikipedians differ. I generally take the view that the purpose of subcategories is to keep the higher categories organised, hence I would not include a broad category when a specific one can be used. This also seems to be the view that Xezbeth advocates. Having said that, I have also on occasion been over-ruled in taking that view. In cases where categories are circular (which often happens and could not until recently be made directly visible), the point becomes difficult to argue in any case, but the current case seems to call for using only the specific category in articles. </academic treatise> - Samsara (talk • contribs) 23:16, 23 October 2006 (UTC)
Creating categories
[edit]Always remember WP:BB. So if you need to make a category, just put it in an article, then click on the link and make that category a subcategory of another by including a [[Category:Boss category]] link where "boss category" is the category you want to include it in. - Samsara (talk • contribs) 23:27, 23 October 2006 (UTC)
Stubs
[edit]You only need to put one stub template per article. Adding {{stub}} is not needed if the article is already in a specific stub category. Also, you don't need to put the month and year on the stub template because it doesn't do anything.--BANG! 04:11, 24 October 2006

Bakersfield
[edit]No you did fine. You should check and see if the highway stuff you removed can go into the article about that highway (minus the un-important details). Most of it was unsourced and the other things were unverified opinions so that's a good removal. pschemp | talk 01:39, 7 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit]Welcome to the Esperanza Collaboration of the Month. As for what to do, yes, go to the talk page to find out what to do. Hope to see you around! DoomsDay349 18:29, 11 November 2006 (UTC)
- I don't want to assign jobs, it prevents everyone from using their full potential. What I suggest is for you to just hang around, watch how it goes, and do small jobs if you feel you're up to it. Hope that helps! DoomsDay349 18:37, 11 November 2006 (UTC)
Image
[edit]Well for one thing, unless you uploaded your picture directly to commons, it won't appear there. Commons pictures will appear here, but it doesn't work the other way around. Any pictures you upload on a free liscense really should get uploaded to Commons rather than here anyway so they can be used on all the projects. Free pictures here get transferred to Commons anyway, so you might as well put it there to begin with. Uploading there works the same as here. pschemp | talk 22:58, 15 November 2006 (UTC)
Sorry for not replying to your messages. I saw that pschemp replied, so I assumed the problem was solved. Best, Samsara (talk • contribs) 17:58, 16 November 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks to you both. I honestly wanted to upload the sucker to Commons, but never could actually figure out how! I really think that part of help needs some work. So still need some guidance. Doh.
And do one or the other of you have a split personality or does Pshemp just watch Samsara's talk? lolCaroldermoid (talk • contribs) 21:31, 16 November 2006 (UTC)
- I watch every page I've ever edited, yours included. First thing, get an account on commons. This is done the same way it is here. Next, go to upload file, pick your file and the name and then copy and past the little info template that looks like this:
{{Information |Description= |Source= |Date= |Author= |Permission= |other_versions= }}
and fill out the info. Source is "own work" and you can leave Permission and other versions blank. Next pick the license you want to use, ( I usually pick Own work copyleft multi-license with GFDL and CC-BY-SA-2,5 etc...) and then upload. Categories work the same there as here. You can add whatever one you like (Category:Veterinary Medicine) might be a good choice. Enjoy.pschemp | talk 22:42, 16 November 2006 (UTC)
Hey there
[edit]Hi. Thanks for the message on my talk page. I was just perusing some of the veterinary dermatology pages you've created, and they are great. If you have time, take a look at some of the other vet med articles out there and contribute, because I've been on my own for a lot of them. I'll go ahead and add myself to that category, too. --Joelmills 01:41, 17 November 2006 (UTC)
- That's great that you are over at commons. I was just checking out the photos you've added. Here is my own gallery. Just so you know, a few months ago myself and two German vets set up a veterinary medicine category there, Veterinary Medicine, with subcategories including veterinary dermatology. It would be great if you would consolidate your photos with ours. --Joelmills 18:15, 17 November 2006 (UTC)

Lupus
[edit]Hi,
I just did a couple big re-writes of the Lupus erythematosus page in the past week and was hoping for some feedback. Could you give it a read-through and let me know what you think? I think I addressed your points about subacute cutaneous lupus and discoid lupus (briefly, looks like they need their own articles really), and moved the section on porphyria around then put in a justification for why it's connected to the SLE article.
I probably won't reply to edits on your talk page, so if you wanted to say anything to me specifically please do so on my own. Natch, anything about lupus specifically on that talk page.

This is a good solid start article, which means that it contains all the basic information required for a understanding of the subject. It does however lack for formal reference citations in the text itself, which is required for it to ever become a good article or better. Also, going a bit more into the specific details about each type of disease, and perhaps general treatment options and so on, would probably be useful, particularly if either the details or treatment options are standard across the board in a particular type. Also, for good article or featured article status, it would probably need a photo or to, however unpleasant they might be. My apologies by the way for the frankly interminable delay in my response. Somehow, the Peer Review page never showed up on my watch list as modified, and I never thought to check it myself. I am now modifying the page itself to indicate that if there isn't a response to a notice left on it within 7 days, to send me a message directly so that it will penetrate my thick skull. dog skin conditions
[edit]Should there be anything in the article about benign growths, warts etc? Also, where could one find out about this, particularly as it relates to aging dogs? (I have a 11 year old toy poodle who now has several growths - the largest about the the size of a pea.) And of course, I was perusing wikipedia, to find info. thks...Jance 02:19, 14 January 2007 (UTC)

It occurred to me in reverting some edits this morning that the Dog Odor article could benefit from some thumbnail photos of say, a dogs paw pads, inflammed anal sacs(lord help us), inflammed ears and so on. Is that something you might be able to provide? I believe such thumbnails would enhance the educational value of the article and prove useful to a reader signing onto wikipedia and frantically searching for some info on smelly dog issues! With help from others, I added a photo from another editor of an engorged female tick he found on his dog to the Tick article and I feel it greatly improved it. A picture, even of something disgusting, really is worth a thousand words. What do you think?LiPollis 13:48, 11 May 2007 (UTC)
