Your articles on the museum and the reference library were marked by another editor for speedy deletion as no indication of importance. As reviewing administrator, I thought they did indicate at least some importance. What they did not however do, is prove notability.

A Wikipedia article needs to show notability with references providing substantial coverage from 3rd party independent published reliable sources, print or online, but not blogs or press releases, or material derived from press releases.

A Wikipedia article needs to be written like an encyclopedia article, not a press release--don't praise the organization or person, say what they do. Don't talk about the overall importance of the subject--talk about what they have accomplished. Remember not to copy from a web site, even your own -- first it's a copyright violation, but, even if you own the copyright and are willing to give us permission according to WP:DCM, the tone will not be encyclopedic and the material will not be suitable. (Thus, there is generally no purpose in giving permission; it is better to rewrite.)

Include only material that would be of interest to a general reader coming across the mention of the subject and wanting the sort of information that would be found in an encyclopedia. Do not include material that would be of interest only to those associated with the subject, or to prospective visitors--that sort of content is considered promotional. Hours and admission fees are exactly what is not wanted here--it belongs on their web page. sort of material.

I would suggest combining this material into the one on the association. As for that article at AfC. I have looked at it, and it has the same problem: no third party sources., It might also have some material copied from the association's own publications. There should at least be substantial references to it in hobbyist magazines, though it would greatly help if there were at least one from a more general interest publication.

Nomination of National Toy Train Museum for deletion

Good start on your article! I went in and turned it into Wikipedia style as best I could ... Since this is a collaborative, cooperative project, my philosophy is more pitch in, So fix it!, rather than spending lots of time telling other people what I think they need to do differently.

That museum is a great spot for kids, so I'd like to see the article stay up. What would probably do the trick would be adding an article about it from a model railroading magazine ... User:Pigsonthewing e-mailed some of the GLAM folks to see if there's something they can find in the museum literature.

What folks don't tell you when you start out here is that writing a new article that won't get deleted is a rather advanced skill; there are a bunch of tricks to it that aren't immediately obvious.

One easy thing to do, now that you've figured out the basics of editing, is adding wikilinks to articles, and, of course copyediting existing articles. The easiest way to figure out how these articles are supposed to be written is work on a bunch of them. I also like the videos and handouts at the Bookshelf for Beginners.

Meanwhile, I'd suggest you introduce yourself over at the Teahouse, where they specialize in assisting new editors and giving you a friendlier reception than what you've experienced so far :) Djembayz (talk) 14:41, 25 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, I just wanted you to know that I have been cleaning up your article at AfC (the one that you got the decline on just above). My best suggestion for secondary sources would be Model Railroader or what ever publication of Kalmbach's that covers large gauge. They certainly must have mentioned your organization or one of their events somewhere. What you are going to need is an article about an event or the organization. A listing on a list of model railroad organizations will not help. I have been removing the in-article hyperlinks (which are frowned upon) and converting them to inline references, which is what I think you were going for in the first place. And a question...all those books you have listed at the bottom? Are they meant to be references (in which case they will need to be tied to the specific bit they are referencing and what pages in the book you are referring to), or are they to be additional reading? Does your organization have a headquarters and a logo? If so, an infobox (this one is probably the most appropriate: Template:Infobox organization) would probably be a good addition to the article. Infoboxes are the thingies you see on the right side of many articles that summarize the nuts and bolts information on the organization (things like address, year founded, head official, webpage, logo, etc.) The article, besides referencing, needs to be organized into subsections for clarity and usability. I am going to finish up with the in article links and then get started on trying to rewrite the article into sections. If you would rather do that yourself, please just let me know. Please try to find some notability references like what I suggested from Model Railroader, etc. I think that once the article looks a little cleaner, it will have a better chance to pass, but those references that show notability are really important.
