Bold textDA VINCIBold text Caravaggistsi: I don't know why you think you are the foremost authority on Da Vinci and Italian Rennis. paintings....Christ Carrying the Cross was fully attributed last year by Carlo Pedretti, foremost Leonardo expert in the world as by Da Vinci, and was further inspected by Alain Goldrich and Andrea Roche the two top conservators in the world and Martin Kemp of Oxford who concurred with Pedretti.. Leonardo's fingerprint is confirmed embedded in the paint....regarding the Titians, they were bought at Sothebys as Titian (June 1989)/(1931), I guess you don't buy at auction either or you would have known this....finally, the Raphael was sold at Christies in 1892 as "Raphael" and is featured in Burlington Magazine Oct. 1978....perhaps you should go find someone else to harrass.
Your article François Duquesnoy needs cleanup -- it seems poorly formatted at the very least. You might also want to mark it as a stub.
Sources for School of Ferrara (Painting)
[edit]Hello. Thanks for your valuable contributions to art articles - this is much appreciated. In particular, I like what you did with School of Ferrara (Painting). However, you did not provide any references or sources in the article. Keeping Wikipedia accurate and verifiable is very important, and as you might be aware there is currently a push to encourage editors to cite the sources they used when adding content. Can you list in the article any websites, books, or other sources that will allow people to verify the content in School of Ferrara (Painting)? You can simply add links, or see WP:CITET for different citation methods. Thanks! Lupin|talk|popups 13:33, 8 December 2005 (UTC)

Duplicate article at Bonifacio Pitati
[edit]It seems that your article an article for Bonifacio Pitati already exists at Bonifazio Veronese. I've redirected the article you wrote to the original one, however you had some details in yours that don't seem to be in the original, so maybe you could add more on it, thanks. - Hahnchen 21:57, 13 December 2005 (UTC)
Churches and Monuments of Rome
[edit]I noticed that you included many churches of Rome in the Category about Monuments and sights of Rome; since all of the churches are already included in the "Churches of Rome" category, and since this category is already a sub category of "Monuments and sights", I would ask you to revert your edits. Academy Saint Luke
[edit]Thank you for your kind words. You also are of course a lover of the great Michelangelo - and you know far more than I about art. (I'm merely clever at taking books and making a summary of them). Robb, in my opinion, is a journalist rather than a scholar - which is exactly what I see myself as being. He did a great deal of work before writing his biography, but in the writing he allowed (deliberately) himself to take a highly personalised view of his subject. It's great writing, but not really scholarship.
As for the article on the academy, it suffers from being too narrow - this is because it's based on to few sources. How important was it in subsequent art history? I have no idea. But this needs to be written proiperly - a job which you will be more able than I to do, as I don't read Italian. I will watch what happens with interest.
By the way, do you know the expatraite Australian artist Jeffrey Smart? He paints desolate, austere scenes, with something of Caravaggio's spirit - but without Caravaggio's hope of salvation. That's the true modernism of Caravaggio, his discovery of the isolation of modern man, in a world in which religion is a hope rather than a certainty. PiCo 13:46, 6 November 2006 (UTC)
Can you check this ungrammatical quote from Freedberg you added on 15 Dec:
"occasionally, the sensibility - too receptive, almost feminine - that inclined Schiavone towards imitation brought him to the verge of echo of (Titian)".
Problem part highlighted - verge of echoing perhaps? Johnbod 18:40, 20 December 2006 (UTC)

Cannobio
[edit]Now, Egreggio Mr Caravaggisti -
I have removed all our arguments from this page as they serve no useful purpose. I am sure you would agree.
My request is that if we are to produce a meaningful page on Cannobio that it be done constructively.
I admire your contribution of the history of Cannobio and have taken the liberty of correcting some of the english, whilst leaving, in totality, your contribution intact.
I have reinserted SOME of my original contributiuon, leaving out your perfectly reasonable accusation of some of it being a little like Yellow Pages. I have no axe whatsoever to grind that these be left out, though would argue that as Cannobio IS primarily a tourist destination, at least a LIST of commercial entities - particularly restaurant...a source close to the heart of any Italian - be included, if no personal observations on their merit or lack of it.
I am relatively new to Wikipedia and therefore ask that if there is anything you, or anyone, objects to in the content of my contribution, they do me the courtesy of telling me - and this CAN be done politely - instead of arbitarily deleting everything. I am perfectly willing to learn.
THAT, to my view, is the spirit of Wikipedia - Even Wikipedia describes Encyclopedic as
An encyclopedia, encyclopaedia or (traditionally) encyclopædia,[1] is a comprehensive written compendium that contains information on all branches of knowledge or a particular branch of knowledge.

Re: Peitre dure
[edit]The article Pietre dure needs some major revision. Mosaic is an ancient art, but lapidary art is a different art; it's jewelers doing stone, semiprecious stone and even precious stone, all finely polished and tightly fitted, unlike a bathroom floor or wall. Peitre dure is the jeweler's art applied to mosaic, with the grout sometimes made invisible.
Can we call Jacopo Ligozzi a jeweler? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by MarkTwainOnIce (talk • contribs) 09:34, 28 January 2007 (UTC).
I vote no, unless someone has strong opinions yes. Jewelers have to handle precious materials with their hands. I have no evidence he did that, and likely did not. CARAVAGGISTI 15:36, 29 January 2007 (UTC)
- I have redone pietre dure, and would not mind a critique. The references/sources need to be tidied up somewhat, but that's for another day; the article also needs to be moved to the correct name-space.
- I've also dug up enough to justify an article Galleria di'Lavori and/or Opificio delle pietre dure. --MarkTwainOnIce 19:42, 29 January 2007 (UTC)
- PS, I need a translation for opere di commessi; "works of store clerks" is absurd in English. --MarkTwainOnIce 20:44, 29 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit]I would signal you the behaviour of user:Johnbod at Castelseprio: another personal attempt to put back the page at his will to a pre-Edir War version, when a large consensus had been reached to keep things as they were. [edit]Not being the author, I can--and did --remove the tag. The prejudice against the fine arts here seems to be increasing-- - You've been here much longer than I have, but I do not know whether you follow the AfD debates--I do, mainly to rescue persecuted academics-- , and the only way to deal with it is to build up the article in advance offline and never put in a stub. To prevent speedys, the trick at the moment is to include the exact phrase "He is notable for ..." using that exact word. Sounds nutty, but it works. The Grove ref there did not work at least from the US. I put in an additional one to the subscription version. I am trying to get it established that any artist (or musician) with a Grove article is Notable as a matter of course, and if you wish I will help--and ask for help--as needed. Printmakers
[edit]When doing new artists PLEEEASE try to remember (if appropriate) to say "painter and printmaker" in the lead, to include & link the technique(s) used, and to categorise as "Category:Italian printmakers". Lets face it, Ghisi and Salimbeni are now better known as printmakers than painters, surely? You might also look at the new List of Printmakers to see who else is missing of your guys, Thanks Johnbod 04:40, 15 February 2007 (UTC)

You criticized pederasty on its talk page a while back, but made no edits to the article. I've placed a POV tag on the page -- what are the changes you think should be made? DanB†DanD 18:20, 5 April 2007 (UTC)
My comments elaborate in the discussion problems with the scholarship of the article, specifically that where there is a dearth of data, sodomy is confused with pederasty, and on the whole the article seems to suggest that pederasty is common. On the other hand, I do not want to re-write this article; I do not want to make it my focus. It is a contentious business of which I want no part of. My interest is the culture of the Italian peninsula mainly from 1600-1800. My intersection with pederasty was that one of the authors of the pederasty article was making octupus-like links to items of little relationship, and also using those articles to foward his view that "pederasty was commonplace" specially among the "luminaries of the time". He also made specific statements that were false, he made Michelangelo into a pederast, and the evidence of this is sketchy. The article of pederasty is a problems, for which I do not want to be the solution. I would warn the editors that some of the behavior exhibited by Haiduc and others could be seen as legally troublesome, if it means to link Michelangelo, a common topic for middle school children, to pederasty, and from there to man-boy organizations like NAMBLA. I am comfortable patrolling Italian art, I do not want to be responsible for what occurs in "pederasty". CARAVAGGISTI 03:41, 9 April 2007 (UTC)
Giovanni da Milano
[edit]Ciao, Caravaggisti! Just wondering what rationale you used in changing the commonscat on Giovanni da Milano, such that he gets sorted on Milano. That doesn't make intuitive sense to me (any more than sorting Leonardo da Vinci under Vinci would) and isn't supported by the Getty Union List, my usual source for this kind of thing: [1] Thanks in advance for clarifying. Planetneutral talk 17:20, 12 April 2007 (UTC)
Hey, Caravaggisti. I see you are creating artist stubs on notable artists and I'd like to thank you for that. However, could you please change the "source" section to the standard "references?" Also, could you please add the {{artist-stub}} tag to the bottom of these pages so that they are not counted toward the article count in Wikipedia? I will go back and do this for the ones you've already created, but could you please do this in the future? Thanks. JHMM13 05:00, 13 April 2007 (UTC)
- OK I've given up at Giuseppe Gambarini of April 4th. I'd very much appreciate it if you go back before that and fix the articles. Thanks, JHMM13 05:19, 13 April 2007 (UTC)

Guide to referencing
[edit]Click on "show" to open contents.
Using references (citations) |
---|
I thought you might find it useful to have some information about references (refs) on wikipedia. These are important to validate your writing and inform the reader. Any editor can removed unreferenced material; and unsubstantiated articles may end up getting deleted, so when you add something to an article, it's highly advisable to also include a reference to say where it came from. Referencing may look daunting, but it's easy enough to do. Here's a guide to getting started. Good references[edit]A reference must be accurate, i.e. it must prove the statement in the text. To validate "Mike Brown climbed Everest", it's no good linking to a page about Everest, if Mike Brown isn't mentioned, nor to one on Mike Brown, if it doesn't say that he climbed Everest. You have to link to a source that proves his achievement is true. You must use Reliable sources, such as published books, mainstream press, authorised web sites, and official documents. Blogs, Myspace, Youtube, fan sites and extreme minority texts are not usually acceptable, nor is Original research, e.g. your own unpublished, or self-published, essay or research. Simple referencing[edit]The first thing you have to do is to create a "Notes and references" section. This goes towards the bottom of the page, below the "See also" section and above the "External links" section. Enter this code:
The next step is to put a reference in the text. Here is the code to do that. It goes at the end of the relevant term, phrase, sentence, or paragraph to which the note refers, and after punctuation such as a full stop, without a space (to prevent separation through line wrap):
Whatever text you put in between these two tags will become visible in the "Notes and references" section as your reference. Test it out[edit]Copy the following text, open the edit box for this page, paste it at the bottom (inserting your own text) and save the page:
(End of text to copy and paste.) Information to include[edit]You need to include the information to enable the reader to find your source. For a book it might look like this:
An online newspaper source would be:
Note the square brackets around the URL. The format is [URL Title] with a space between the URL and the Title. If you do this the URL is hidden and the Title shows as the link. Use double apostrophes for the article title, and two single quote marks either side of the name of the paper (to generate italics). The date after The Guardian is the date of the newspaper, and the date after "Retrieved on" is the date you accessed the site – useful for searching the web archive in case the link goes dead. Wikilinks (double square brackets which create an internal link to a wikipedia article) function inside the ref tags. Dates are wikilinked so that they work with user preference settings. Citation templates[edit]You may prefer to use a citation template to compile details of the source. The template goes between the ref tags and you fill out the fields you wish to. Basic templates can be found here: Wikipedia:Template messages/Sources of articles/Citation quick reference Same ref used twice or more[edit]The first time a reference appears in the article, you can give it a simple name in the <ref> code:
The second time you use the same reference in the article, you need only to create a short cut instead of typing it all out again:
You can then use the short cut as many times as you want. Don't forget the /, or it will blank the rest of the article! A short cut will only pick up from higher up the page, so make sure the first ref is the full one. Some symbols don't work in the ref name, but you'll find out if you use them. Example[edit]You can see refs in action in the article William Bowyer (artist). There are 3 sources and they are each referenced 3 times. Each statement in the article has a footnote to show what its source is. Next step[edit]When you become familiar with the process, the next step is to have one section, "Footnotes", with links embedded in the text, and another, "References", which lists all of your references alphabetically with full details, e.g. for a book:
If you're ready to go into it further, these pages have detailed information:
I hope this helps. If you need any assistance, let me know. |
Italian names
[edit]I see that you usually do't reply to my messages... why? Anyway, I would like to draw your attention to a mistake i see recurring from your sources... Again me
[edit]Ciao Carav! Good work at Santa Trinita. However, just some advices: please avoid the use of statements such as "notable church", "famous painter" etc.. those are called "weasel words", and belong to the POV policy which is disregarded here. I admit, sometimes I use it also, but try to avoid it especially in the definition of the entry. Also, another very minor thing: use complete numbering when possible: i.e. 1594-1597, instead of 1594-7. Bye, and anyway compliments, as your adds are very very useful. --Attilios 00:55, 6 May 2007 (UTC)
- Much as I hate to disagree with Attilios, neither of these are usually Weasel words, nor do they necessarily fall under WP:PEACOCK which I presume is the policy he means. And the standard form is 1594-97 though I can't remember the guideline for that. Johnbod 01:02, 6 May 2007 (UTC)

- Ciao! Some notes of style about your article Galleria dei dipinti antichi della Cassa di Risparmio di Cesena:
- No need of boldface when it's a simple list. It's reserved to (sub)sections or repetition, in different form, of the name of the entry's subject
- No need of listing by surname. say, not Beccafumi, Domenico, but leave it Domenico Beccafumi though maintaining the listing by surname of course.
- No use of 1400s instead of 15th century. Here, "1400s" means literally the years from 1401 to 1410.
Bye and anjoy editing Wikipedia with your nice articles. --Attilios 14:47, 15 June 2007 (UTC)

Getty
[edit]Thanks - I use the Getty Union List as a convenient online reference for artists names, or in todays case, the sorting of names; in most cases I could use books but the Getty is easier for others to check. I don't think a copyright issue arises there. As you may know, until recently the WP manual of style implied that eg Jan van Eyck was sorted under V as "Van Eyck, Jan" which is just not right. This has been changed & I was sorting out the "defaultsort"s etc. User:Pietdesomere seems to have gone quiet - he used to do a lot. Attilios has developed an interest in van Eyck. I'm not sure I want to spend too much time on these guys - there are so many of them! All the best. Johnbod 00:47, 6 July 2007 (UTC)
Girolamo da Trevigi
[edit]Hi. I am quite certain that Girolamo da Trevigi and Girolamo da Treviso (the Younger) are one in the same, and that he is also known as Gerolamo Pennacchi. Vasari discusses him in the biography of Perino del Vaga. The relationship between Girolamo and Pier Maria Pennacchi is more complex. I don't have any proof of Girolamo having studied with Pier, but I won't discount it for now. However, Domenico Capriolo (no article, but red-linked in the Giorgione article) appears to have been both Pier Maria's student and son-in-law. It also seems that older literature often discussed Pier Maria Pennacchi together with another Girolamo da Treviso (the Elder) who lived between 1475–97, who might also have been his older brother. That's where an investigation of my books took me just now. So yes, it's a bit too confusing for me to get a complete picture at the moment. But I'll add anything solid I find (but not at this moment as I don't have time)... --Stomme 07:02, 9 July 2007 (UTC)
- Butting in, according to the Getty Name list Pier Maria was the younger brother (by 14 years) of Girolamo da Treviso the Elder.[3] What they don't specify is the relationship between these two and Girolamo the Younger, who was born perhaps just after the Elder's death. A justification of the category "Italian Roman Catholics"
[edit]You wrote to me: "I want to question the utility of even having this category. Specifically I object to making such a category and including Italians from Rome from the 16th and 17th century. Is there a category of Italians from Rome in those centuries who were not Roman Catholics?? Someone listed both Gianlorenzo Bernini and Michelangelo in this category, why? What else could Michelangelo have been? I think this category is exceedingly redundant when applied to Italians of those centuries. I question if it has any informative value. Nearly all Italians living in Rome in the 16th century were Catholic. It would be more interesting to make a list of those who weren't. I challenge you to find any. Ultimately, I believe that the category will be either deleted or many names, such as those above, pruned from the list. CARAVAGGISTI 18:10, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

There is especially no reason to proscribe the assignment of what may seem to be obvious, implied, or redundant categories to those individuals whose historical or cultural situatedness make their assignment to those categories obvious, implied, or redundant.
2. You challenged me to present exceptions to your absolutist conjecture that "all Italians living in Rome in the 16th century were Catholic." Exhibit A: Giordano Bruno (1548-1600), who was condemned as a heretic by Catholic authority. Since convicted heresy implies excommunication, Bruno was ipso facto a non-Catholic.
3. I am reassigning the category "Italian Roman Catholics" to all those persons who are or were in fact Italian Roman Catholics. I have proven with the example of Bruno that a "16th century Italian, Roman Catholic person" is not tautologous. Hence, the categorization of certain 16th century Italians as "Italian Roman Catholics" has at least some informative value.
4. If you or others either delete the category or prune persons from it who properly belong to it, I will report this issue to the wikipedia authorities for arbitration. -Schlier22 18:58, 10 July 2007 (UTC)
Please do NOT copy and paste content to rename pages--use the Move tab
[edit]The Pietro Bianchi article page should have been Moved to Pietro Bianchi (Athlete)--not transfered via cut&paste. Using cut&paste separates the content from its edit history, which is a problem with the GFDL license, among other things, which admins then have to clean up. If you have done the same thing with other articles in the past you can report them at the Wikipedia:Cut and paste move repair holding pen. Also, please note that according to Wikipedia:naming conventions the new articles should be at Pietro Bianchi (athlete) (which should be taken care of by the admin merging the histories) and Pietro Bianchi (painter), without the excess capitalization. Thanks. Seattlenow 23:35, 16 July 2007 (UTC)
Format
[edit]Ciao CARAV. Some little format advices: 1) don't put in boldface or italics the titles in the |title= field of the cite book template; 2) don't forget the birth/death cat where possible; 3) check typos in your articles. For the rest, compliments for the wide interesting opera you're doing with Italian painters!!! I've recently added a more thouroughly analysis of interpretations of The Flagellation (Piero della Francesca), which still nobody has copyedit or checked. It you've time, you can help with it. Ciao and good work!! --Attilios 17:09, 29 July 2007 (UTC)
Can I ask you for your help? Would it be possible to send you a picture of a painting - not signed or dated - from the second half of 17th century with Judith, Holofernes and Abra? It is either Italian or Dutch, and I would like to know your opinion? Taksen 10:46, 14 August 2007 (UTC)
Valencians
[edit]Hi Caravaggisti, I just noticed, via your addition to Sorolla, that you are beginning a Category:People from Valencia, and wondered if this is different from the existing Category:Valencian People. There may be a good rationale--I am not deeply versed on the workings of categories. Best wishes, JNW 22:29, 25 August 2007 (UTC)
- Not at all. Indefatigable contributor as you are, I did not want you go to the trouble of re-inventing an existing category. Cheers, JNW 23:11, 25 August 2007 (UTC)
You know you can upload all the paintings of these people to the commons and use them in the article of course?? I'd be great to see a gallery of their paimtimgs or at least one expample ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "Talk"? 19:04, 7 September 2007 (UTC)

Barbiere
[edit]I only see Damiano del Barbiere referred to as Domenico del Barbiere: even the source at the bottom of the page spells him that way. Did you have a source that calls him "Damiano"? Of course, people were often called more than one name in those days.qp10qp 16:46, 30 September 2007 (UTC)
- My books spell him with an e, but your use of an i prompted me to change my search terms, and so I have found Domenico del Barbieri. I didn't realise there were two such guys, and now I can relax and link to Domenico, the one who sculpted the base to the monument for the heart of Henry II. Blunt, in Art and Architecture in France, 1500-1700, is quite clear about that, even though our article doesn't mention that he sculpted. No one much seems to mention Damiano (seven Googlebook hits), so you might be right that they could possibly be the same fellow.qp10qp 15:11, 1 October 2007 (UTC)
- I've added some bits and pieces to that article, based on Blunt.qp10qp 23:22, 1 October 2007 (UTC)
Carlo Frigerio
[edit]A {{prod}} template has been added to the article Carlo Frigerio, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice explains why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may contest the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}}
notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. If you endorse deletion of the article, and you are the only person who has made substantial edits to the page, please tag it with {{db-author}}. Cruftbane 21:14, 1 October 2007 (UTC)
A tag has been placed on Carlo Frigerio requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article appears to be about a real person, organization (band, club, company, etc.), or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not indicate the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable. If this is the first page that you have created, then you should read the guide to writing your first article.
If you think that you can assert the notability of the subject, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}}
to the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the article's talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm the subject's notability under Wikipedia guidelines.

Unreferenced BLPs
[edit]Hello CARAVAGGISTI! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 1 of the articles that you created is tagged as an Unreferenced Biography of a Living Person. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. In addition, to ensure verifiability, all biographies should be based on reliable sources. If you were to bring this article up to standards, it would greatly help us with the current 5 article backlog. Once the article is adequately referenced, please remove the {{unreferencedBLP}} tag. Here is the article:

Jacopo Amigoni
[edit]Hello Thanks for your interesting article on Amiconi/Amigoni. I read it with great interest. I wish to make you aware of a possible "business connection" of Amigoni with Farinelli and composer Nicola Porpora which was reported by late 18th century British press. I found an article about Farinelli in the The Westminster Magazine: or, The Pantheon of Taste, vol. 5 (1777), pp. 396-397, which I am currently preparing for publication on Wikisource (i.e. I have contacted a user actively contributing to the music section in the English wikisource and who will hopefully find this piece of information useful). I do not wish to interfere in British/English wikipedia, hence I am sending you this link here, in case you wish to consider this piece of information.--Haendelfan (talk) 23:57, 8 November 2015 (UTC)
