I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Oh yeah, I almost forgot, when you post on talk pages you should sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); that should automatically produce your username and the date after your post. If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or place {{helpme}} on your talk page and ask your question there. Again, welcome!

Why does my name show up in red when I make edits?

Byrd High (talk) 15:21, 11 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Your name is red because you have not created a user page, which is a place you can have information about yourself and your activities on Wikipedia. You may create one by clicking on the red link and adding the content you wish, and then your name will be blue with a link to your user page. Please let me know if there are any more questions. Thanks! --Mysdaao talk 15:29, 11 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict)It's what we like to call a red link, that is to a say,a link to an article or page which doesn't already exist. In this case, that page is your userpage, a page where you can write a little about yourself (click on my name for example). As soon as you create that page, your name will show up in blue. - Jarry1250 (t, c) 15:32, 11 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Welcome to Wikipedia. Everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia. However, the username you have chosen (Byrd High) seems to imply that you are editing on behalf of a group, company or website.

There are two issues with this:

  1. It is possible that you have a conflict of interest. In keeping with Wikipedia's neutral point of view policy, you must exercise great caution when editing on topics related to your organization or adding links to its website.
  2. Your account cannot represent a group of people. You may wish to create a new account with a username that represents only you. Alternatively, you may consider changing your username to avoid giving the impression that your personal account is being used for promotional purposes.

Regardless of whether you change your name or create a new account, you are not exempted from the guidelines concerning editing where you have a conflict of interest. For information on how to contribute to Wikipedia when you have a conflict of interest, please see our frequently asked questions for organizations. The article in question is C. E. Byrd High School. Thank you. Vrenator talk 16:17, 12 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to Wikipedia. Because we have a policy against usernames that give the impression that the account represents a group, organization or website, I have blocked this account; please take a moment to create a new account with a username that represents only you. You should also read our conflict of interest guideline and be aware that promotional editing is not acceptable regardless of what username you choose. If your username doesn't represent a group, organization or website, you may appeal this username block by adding the text {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}} below this notice. Thank you.

Request reason:

I understand that this may look like I am representing Byrd High School, but other than having attended, I am in no way affiliated. I do not work for them, am not involved with the alumni organization other than a general member. I picked the name just as a sense of loyalty and a big part of my life. Thank you for your help. 65.75.64.68 (talk) 17:28, 20 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Decline reason:

We appreciate that. But editing the article after picking that username created a presumption of a conflict of interest. You can use {{unblock-un}} to request that you be unblocked and allowed to change your username (Or you could just start an account with a new username and abandon this one, although you might want to disclose that you used this one first). I think you could probably come up with a username that made the connection to the school yet made it clear that you are one person, not editing on the school's behalf. — Daniel Case (talk) 17:49, 20 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.
