    Hi @Just Step Sideways
I am shocked at the block notice received in respect of my notifications sent to top contributors who participated in the EmpowerHer Editathon within the Anglophone community via their talk pages, which is one of the On-wiki communication channels. As I do not intend in any way to disrupt Wiki. I have coordinated with this campaign with the support of experienced Francophone and Anglophone Wikimedians such as Ibjaja05, Manouka, Aboubacarkhoraa. My intention was to reach out to the participants to enable them receive their prizes for the Campaign they had participated and I could only access them via their talkpages.Bukky658 (talk) 19:01, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Really? And those experienced users, and yourself, decided it was ok to ask users to give you, specifically, their personal information, including where they work? That's difficult to believe. Just Step Sideways from this world ..... today 19:09, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Bukky, I think there is a decent chance this was a good-faith, but poorly-executed, plan. I'm not offering to unilaterally unblock you because I am not quite sure I know what is going on, but this might be useful for admins to decide: if you're unblocked, could you assure us that you won't make those requests for personal info on-wiki again? And then we can discuss what went wrong at WP:ANI? --Floquenbeam (talk) 19:17, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the kind consideration Floquenbeam. I just discovered that my intention was to send via Special Email User but I got it all mixed up by sending it via their talk pages directly. I am now aware of how I had poorly executed this by requesting that they send me their contact details via my official email address as contained in my earlier messages sent to their talk pages, even with the assurance that the requested information will be kept confidential and used solely for the purpose of prize distribution as requested by my Finance Department. Kindly accept this as my assurance to be more careful next time having learnt from this experience. Bukky658 (talk) 19:36, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmm. I guess my concern is, can you see the perspective of someone who doesn't know you, that this looks exactly like a phishing attempt would look, even if it isn't? Why would you need to know where they work, for example? Floquenbeam (talk) 19:38, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The information I had intended to collect was about their occupation so as to help identify the fields to which the top contributors belong and not to invade their work life privacy. This is part of our in house community analysis to better understand which other campaigns would interest them and how to sustain their engagments in Wiki activities as part of our goals. Other details mention such as their full name, address, and country was solely for the purpose of processing their prizes and will be discarded upon their confirmation of receiving it. I have also reverted all my previous messages sent to their talkpages with a summary stating the mix up. Bukky658 (talk) 21:00, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
As users on Wikipedia are based in the EU, can you confirm how exactly the prize draw complies with the General Data Protection Regulations? Qcne (talk) 19:47, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Just Step Sideways Thank you for keeping the Wikipedia space safe. I think it is a little bit of mix-up from @Bukky658 side. The plan was to reach out to them via email for the prize distribution but she ended up flooding their page. On the issue of where they work, it was part of the information requested from where she currently interns as WIR, another mix up that should have been addressed because Wikipedia is not like any other platforms where you can just requested for personal details. In summary, I believe it was a a great mistake commited with good faith, @Bukky658 wouldn't have done it if she knew she would be breaking policies. She has been an active Community organisers and has supported different people to be active Wikimedia editors. I believe she has learnt her lesson and she would not repeat it again if she is unblocked. Ibjaja055 (talk) 20:51, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • There's a couple things I think still need adressing here:
  • Emailing people asking for these same things is arguably the same, if not worse, as asking for them on their talk page.
  • Were people who actually agreed to participate in this informed that they would have to provide these details to a complete stranger in order to get their prizes? I'm not seeing it on the page describing the event.
  • I have also reverted all my previous messages sent to their talkpages with a summary stating the mix up. I'm not sure how that is possible since you are blocked, and also I already did it right after issuing the block.
  • This isn't really related to the block reasons but it's 2024, there are any number of ways to send someone money without knowing their physical address, or even their real name, was that even considered? Just Step Sideways from this world ..... today 21:30, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
They asked on meta and fr wiki too, those they reverted. – 2804:F14:80EE:5A01:F151:38D2:AA6E:399F (talk) 21:39, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not seeing any reply from Bukky658 to the points I raised. At this point I would suggest that if you want the block lifted, file an unblock request as detailed in the block notice. Just Step Sideways from this world ..... today 19:44, 4 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Apologises for my late response. I am writing to formally express regrets for my recent actions that violated the community's policy on privacy. It was entirely unintentional, and I deeply aplogise for the oversight. Specifically, I acknowledge that my request for personally identifiable information, including editors' workplace details, was inappropriate and against the established behavioural expectations of our community.
In response to your question; Were people who actually agreed to participate in this informed that they would have to provide these details to a complete stranger in order to get their prizes? I'm not seeing it on the page describing the event.
Response: All Participants who registered for the event were briefed on how they will claim their prizes at the end of the campaign during the virtual launch which includes sharing information that will enable them receive the prize for data support directly from the partnering Organisation at the end of the campaign. I should not have published the information publicly because that could potentially compromise the top contributor's privacy and lead to impersonation.
I now realise that I should have guided the sponsoring organization appropriately, that such requests are not acceptable within our community guidelines including the African Wikipedian Alliance Community where I act in my capacity as the community Coordinator . I take full responsibility for my actions and assure you that this behavior was an isolated incident. I now understand the seriousness of the situation and promise that it will not be repeated in the future. If unblocked, I am committed to demonstrating improved judgment and adherence to our community's standards ensuring that my organisation explore other avenues that does not invade participants privacy, or collect details using google form clearly stating the data privacy policy and explainig how their data will be processed, even though participants are pre-informed during office hours. I am fully aware of the potential consequences of repeating such behavior, including the possibility of a full CBAN (Community Ban). I am dedicated to learning from this experience and ensuring it does not happen again. Thank you for your understanding and consideration. Bukky658 (talk) 06:40, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Request reason:

I am writing to formally express regrets for my recent actions that violated the community's policy on privacy. It was entirely unintentional, and I deeply regret any inconvenience or discomfort it may have caused. Specifically, I acknowledge that my request for personally identifiable information, was inappropriate and against the established behavioural expectations of our community. In response to @Just Step Sidewaysquestions: :*Were people who actually agreed to participate in this informed that they would have to provide these details to a complete stranger in order to get their prizes? I'm not seeing it on the page describing the event. Answer: All Participants who registered for the event were briefed on how they will claimed their prizes which include sharing information that will enable them receive the prize for data support directly from Charter Africa, the partnering Organisation at the end of the campaign and I had shared my official email with the participants publicly for the organization sponsoring the event to get across the prizes to the top contributors. I should not have published the information publicly because that also allows other people to impersonate the participant. I have also identified myself in multiple locations; series of trainings as part of the campaign, kept participants updated weekly progress of the campaign via the event registration tool message box, manually tracked contributions from participants reviewing edits submitted to the campaign metapage, and shown my association with the organization working on bettering topics for the African contest. I realize now that I should have guided my organization appropriately, that such requests are not acceptable within our community guidelines including the African Wikipedian Alliance Community where I act in my capacity as the community Coordinator . I take full responsibility for my actions and assure you that this behavior was an isolated incident. I now understand the seriousness of the situation and promise that it will not be repeated in the future. I am fully aware of the potential consequences of repeating such behaviour, including the possibility of a full CBAN (Community Ban). I am dedicated to learning from this experience and ensuring it does not happen again. Thank you for your understanding and consideration. 10:24 pm, Yesterday (UTC−8)Bukky658 (talk)
