English varieties

[edit]

Hi! I noticed you changed some parts of Military ranks of the Soviet Union (1955–1991) to be a different dialect of English. Usually, if a variety of English is already consistent within an article it shouldn't then be changed to a different variety. I'd recommend reading through this section of the Manual of Style, especially this paragraph. If you have any questions, feel free to drop by my talk page! Edited to add - the short description template is not for edit summaries, it's a description of the article. If you use an edit summary, put it in the box at the bottom of the editor :] Suntooooth, it/he (talk/contribs) 12:52, 13 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry about the dialect changes but my main reason for editing is to be more accurate and universal for all reading from all regions, providing direct translations of Soviet ranks rather than just very approximate US equivalents, which are not always accurate (and I think can be misleading).
Hope you find this helpful and useful. Brigadier Guff (talk) 14:15, 13 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I can't comment on the rank translations (I don't know very much about military ranks); I just was making sure you were aware of the policy on dialect changes :] Suntooooth, it/he (talk/contribs) 16:39, 13 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Okay.
If I leave the dialect along would you be okay for me to edit the ranks again to make the translation more accurate and of more interest internationally?

Sure, go ahead! Suntooooth, it/he (talk/contribs) 17:15, 13 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Your recent editing history at Military ranks of the Soviet Union (1955–1991) shows that you are currently engaged in an edit war; that means that you are repeatedly changing content back to how you think it should be, when you have seen that other editors disagree. To resolve the content dispute, please do not revert or change the edits of others when you are reverted. Instead of reverting, please use the talk page to work toward making a version that represents consensus among editors. The best practice at this stage is to discuss, not edit-war; read about how this is done. If discussions reach an impasse, you can then post a request for help at a relevant noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases, you may wish to request temporary page protection.

Being involved in an edit war can result in you being blocked from editing—especially if you violate the three-revert rule, which states that an editor must not perform more than three reverts on a single page within a 24-hour period. Undoing another editor's work—whether in whole or in part, whether involving the same or different material each time—counts as a revert. Also keep in mind that while violating the three-revert rule often leads to a block, you can still be blocked for edit warring—even if you do not violate the three-revert rule—should your behavior indicate that you intend to continue reverting repeatedly. I changed the ranks as I felt the US approximate equivalents were not accurate and didn't really relate internationally.
Therefore I thought direct translations would be more universally acceptable as the US is only a very small percent of the world.
Thank you and hope you find this helpful. Brigadier Guff (talk) 17:31, 16 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
