I have recently been reverting your links to a number of subjects. I am concerned that a link to a collection of videos is not entirely appropriate. I have left the links to specific videos of speakers when the video is about that subject specifically. That falls under a direct link to the subject of the article.

But please pay attention to point 14 of the external link guidelines under "links to be avoided": "Sites that are only indirectly related to the article's subject: the link should be directly related to the subject of the article. A general site that has information about a variety of subjects should usually not be linked to from an article on a more specific subject. Similarly, a website on a specific subject should usually not be linked from an article about a general subject. If a section of a general website is devoted to the subject of the article, and meets the other criteria for linking, then that part of the site could be deep-linked."

Unfortunately this can be a very slippery slope as every institute will start adding links under the basis that "Stanford gets to include theirs". Then a [[linkfarm] grows which we try to avoid.

Thanks for alerting me to the policy, I was unaware of it. I'll be careful to adhere to it in future.

Thanks for being understanding. I probably should have said something before but I get caught up in different things... Anyway, as I said, if XXX gives a speech and there is a video of it, then directly to the video on XXX's article should be fine. Montco (talk) 02:09, 1 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

SPAM and SOAP

[edit]

Please review WP:SPAM and WP:SOAP carefully, and WP:COI in case it applies. I think it would be best for you to remove all your link additions, and discuss their inclusion on each article's talk page instead. You might want to get other perspectives on this first if you don't agree. However, you're likely to find someone removing them all as spam anyways. --Ronz (talk) 17:15, 1 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the alert Ronz. I have removed all link additions from any general topic subjects I had added to.
For individuals who have given speeches, I have left the link to the speech under external links on their page. As per my understanding of WP:SPAM and my discussion above with user Montco, I believe these are legitimate additions. Please let me know if my understanding is incorrect.

Thanks! I appreciate your work on this. I think your actions and the discussions here should be more than enough for anyone else that's concerned about the edits. --Ronz (talk) 17:11, 2 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
