Information icon Please refrain from making unconstructive edits to Wikipedia, as you did at William Butcher. Your edits appear to be disruptive and have been or will be reverted.

Please ensure you are familiar with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines, and please do not continue to make edits that appear disruptive. Continued disruptive editing may result in loss of editing privileges. Thank you. A type of cabinet (talk) 16:31, 27 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Please stop your disruptive editing.

If you continue to disrupt Wikipedia, as you did at Billy Butcher, you may be blocked from editing. A type of cabinet (talk) 16:31, 27 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Can I add a distinguisher for William Butcher (The Boys) or William Butcher (character)? BopSeven (talk) 16:32, 27 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That's probably fine. If you start changing names and template information again, you may get yourself blocked. A type of cabinet (talk) 16:39, 27 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Slow down a bit!

[edit]

You're making a lot of edits on the Overwatch character articles which I understand you think are helping, but they aren't. A lot of those parameters aren't used in the infobox to avoid bloat and making them unnecessarily larger than they need to be. Kung Fu Man (talk) 04:16, 26 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

What did "We don't use fictional characters on articles anymore either." mean? BopSeven (talk) 04:18, 26 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
If you look through article histories, the "fictional" part was removed from almost every character article as it was considered redundant.--Kung Fu Man (talk) 04:20, 26 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Please stop with the additions of WP:CRUFT to the infobox. I understand you feel this may be helping, but it's acting as disruptive editing.--Kung Fu Man (talk) 04:45, 26 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Like the civilian names you mean? That is all I have really been adding, and I don't think that's fancruft, or is it now? BopSeven (talk) 04:48, 26 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Stuff like that often is, yeah. Same with spouses and family members. This may help shed some insight on things: Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Video_games/Video_game_characters/Archive_170#Infoboxes_and_a_"Manual_of_Style".
But overall there's been more of a goal to keep the infobox "tight" and not loaded with unnecessary info in the video game project.--Kung Fu Man (talk) 04:52, 26 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Right, so this is just with video game franchises? What happens when the franchise moves beyond games; does another project have to get involved, with their own rules saying that information is allowed? BopSeven (talk) 04:53, 26 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Generally each project has their own MOS on this thing, though it depends on where the character originates from. But yeah, there's a big push to try and minimalize cruft across the project.--Kung Fu Man (talk) 05:02, 26 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
What about Brigitte (Overwatch); since her character appeared in comics in the franchise before the games, could her inbox contain more, since it would arguably fall under that umbrella? Or if the main body of the franchise is video game-based, would that apply to any and all non-game-originated characters? BopSeven (talk) 05:04, 26 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Overwatch characters as a whole fall under the video game project. If you check WT:VGCHAR you can see there's been an improvement drive to try and get the articles to Good Article status across the board, and spin out any that had enough reception (which we've achieved). So yeah something like this can end up with someone else having to go behind and clean things up unfortunately.--Kung Fu Man (talk) 05:09, 26 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Right. What other video game franchises extending their umbrella into other franchises would this also apply to? Would Resident Evil characters count, or would their many film adaptations bring their character boxes closer to Star Wars quality with extreme background characters like Bib Fortuna getting full pages? BopSeven (talk) 05:12, 26 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I would say generally as a rule it's best to avoid slamming this stuff into an infobox. It's fine for a wikia, but here it can be seen as cruft, and gets far worse when people go overkill with it (like listing every nickname for a character, or ever relationship a character has had across a massive franchise, etc etc)--Kung Fu Man (talk) 05:15, 26 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That is like every Star Wars page there is. BopSeven (talk) 05:17, 26 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Other Stuff Exists, likely at some point there will be a mass cleaning there too. Here we have a bigger drive to get character articles to good status.--Kung Fu Man (talk) 05:22, 26 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe having the parameter itself deleted would help send the message? Is that an option? BopSeven (talk) 05:23, 26 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Lucas Lee. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)
