I have a stalker

Just in case you were wondering, the comment earlier on your talk page (already reverted) wasn't from me, but from a seriously annoying vandal who has signed up as Mayallld (rather than Mayalld) Mayalld (talk) 07:13, 5 January 2009 (UTC)

Template:River Parrett map

Hi Bob, Thanks for sorting out the docks bit. When I went from BS3 to BS5 symbols it screwed up the "Portlake Rhine" and "Bicknells Bridge, River Yeo" lines so I re-did them using a different set of symbols - so your original colour scheme has been partially lost on these two lines. Sorry about that, I did not fully understand the symbol set that you had used.Pyrotec (talk) 00:15, 1 February 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the message. I have fixed it. It used the ugSTRlf as the basic symbol, and overlayed a ueSTR or ueHSTR, so that it looked like a uexABZlf, but the branch was green. Bob1960evens (talk) 09:01, 1 February 2009 (UTC)

Stort Navigation Route Map

Thanks for spotting the 3 minor errors on the map. Still 3 out of 282 is not a bad percentage error rate. Hope you like the two icons I cobbled up:- uHKRZun & uddSTR from existing ones. Ronhjones (talk) 00:26, 2 February 2009 (UTC)

Yes. And well done for spotting the naming convention for new symbols. Not everyone does. Bob1960evens (talk) 10:18, 2 February 2009 (UTC)
The naming seemed logical to me, but that might be why I'm a mad scientist - just call me Spock... Ronhjones (talk) 19:31, 2 February 2009 (UTC)

Lee Navigation Route Map

Bob, I see you have been busy of late with new maps - just to advise I'm half way through map for this one - in case you fancied starting one! See:-User:Ronhjones/Sandbox for data so far. Maybe we need an "in progress" page? Ronhjones (talk) 19:45, 9 February 2009 (UTC)

Ron, thanks for leaving the note. I was indeed thinking of doing a map for the River Lee, as there is a request for one, and had spotted that the River Lee Navigation did not have one, even though there was no request for one. I have steadily worked my way through the Waterways pages needing routemaps. There were about 140 when I started. I do not have a source for the Irish ones, so have not attempted them (yet?). It is a tricky balance to know what to put in and what not to, when you are writing an encyclopedia, rather than a cruising guide. I tend to omit minor bridges unless the waterway is very small, or they are specifically mentioned in the text, and concentrate on major road and rail crossings as well as the locks. Keep up the good work. Bob1960evens (talk) 19:56, 9 February 2009 (UTC)
Thanks, Bob. I did leave in the minor bridges on the Stort (as there are so few bridges), however it's looks like I might have to trim the Lee of some of them. Once I've sorted out the intricate lakes and reservoirs and minor cuts... it's quite a wet valley! Plan it to take it down to the Thames (via Bow Locks), leaving out most of Bow Back Rivers - probably need a map to themselves. FWIW I tend to have Streetmap and Google earth open - gives me good view to remember where the "bits" go - Sadly, Streetmap doesn't do Ireland Ronhjones (talk) 20:23, 9 February 2009 (UTC)
Map now finished and in place. Had to make a couple more icons! All those lakes, weirs and reservoirs. Hardest part was trying to "thin" the finished map down so that it didn't take up half the page width. I'm going to play with the T&M next -just got a 40 page route printout off canalplan.org.uk. This might take a while... Ronhjones (talk) 00:40, 11 February 2009 (UTC)

Tidy Icons

Hi, Bob - no not neat icons, but I have been tidying. There were canal icons in both en:wikipedia and commons (mainly on commons). I have moved all the en:wikipedia ones to commons. I then found a search page on Commons that allows one to search on the prefix - so I have also gone through one by one all icons that start with a "BSicon u" (I was almost left clicking - right clicking in my sleep last night - there are over 1200...!), and added the Category Commons:Category:Icons for canal descriptions to any that I thought would be useful for canal and/or river maps. So if you jump to that page you will be greeted by 656 icons to view. Some of these you might like to add to your template page. (will be 657 in a minute as I am going to make the mirror image of BSicon uHWEIRg.svg to complete the set.) Ronhjones (talk) 20:04, 13 February 2009 (UTC)

Large changes to Waterway icon names

Dear Bob,

I see a user (User:Axpde) has made many changes to the icon names in Template:TandM Canal Route Map and Template:Waterways legend but no reasons given. I posted a query on his talk page. Seems to me (looking at the rest of the talk page) that he wants all the name format to be his POV  Ronhjones  (Talk) 15:09, 5 April 2009 (UTC)

Ron, Looking at the template, the main changes seem to be the change from HSTR to STRq, and the renaming of icons where an underground railway (blue) crosses an overground railway (red). When I first started editing icons I did quite a lot of such renaming, in order to get create some standards for icon names, so I understand the logic. On the whole, I like the idea of the "q", and there is probably good reason for renaming the crossings. It is just a pity that it involves so much adjusting of templates with no visual change, which takes time which could be used to improve article content. Bob1960evens (talk) 16:42, 5 April 2009 (UTC)
Yes, well good luck to him. He's going to be busy - No, he has been busy, see his reply at User_talk:Axpde#Changes_to_Canal_Icons. I saw the change from the leading "H" to trailing "q", also I see all the ueSTR... have changed to uexSTR... [1]. I think he might have made a rod for his own back... As you say, there are better things to do with one's time  Ronhjones  (Talk) 22:18, 5 April 2009 (UTC)

I think your canal map format is great. I've taken some photographs along the route. If you click on the photographs, I've added degree-minute-second coordinates. Clicking on these and then choosing Google Maps and the satellite option, you can see which parts of the canal are still in water. I'm a bit unsure how to change the map. So, please could you make the following updates:

  • The link between the North Calder Water feeder and the start of the Monkland Canal is culverted. They're only about 10ft apart, but it's not open water.
  • Physically, there's no obvious Calderbank basin. I can't find it on any old maps, either.
  • From the start of the canal, it's all in water until the Old Palacecraig weir - there are no culverted sections to this point. This weir drains into the (still adjacent) North Calder Water.
  • The Faskine Basin is between the Upper Faskine bridge and the Lower Faskine bridge . These are both road bridges.
  • The canal comes into open water just above the Blair Road bridge , not below.
  • Just below the Blair Road bridge, a sluice gate feeds Burginsholme Burn.
  • Before going under the railway , there's a small basin that used to serve Drumpeller Colliery (original spelling, they did not use current name for the area - Drumpellier). This basin has a sluice gate that feeds Bishop Burn.--ML5 (talk) 12:05, 25 June 2009 (UTC)
I'll have a go at the map over the weekend. If there are any parts I'm not sure of, I'll get back to you. Bob1960evens (talk) 21:52, 25 June 2009 (UTC)
Cheers!--ML5 (talk) 21:56, 25 June 2009 (UTC)
We do not normally bother to distinguish whether feeders are culverted, so there is no symbol for one, but I have added text. I have added both the Faskine bridges, moved the basin and renamed the bridge which said it was Faskine bridge to Sykeside Road bridge. I do not normally put minor bridges on, unless the canal is very short, but since there are now images of both Faskine bridges, it is worth knowing where they are. Calderbank has become the place, rather than a basin, and Drumpeller basin has been added. I am not sure whether to bother with the sluice to Burginsholme Burn, and it is not obvious from the 1:25000 map which side it is. The pictures are an excellent addition to the article. Bob1960evens (talk) 16:55, 26 June 2009 (UTC)
[I just got your message - I was away] Thanks for the update, it's perfect. You'd probably miss the Burginsholme Burn if you were standing beside it as it's so small, especially in dry weather. The Bishop Burn, on the other hand, is much more substantial and has been shown on OS maps for more than 100 years. However, it is a burn, not a river.--ML5 (talk) 19:17, 29 June 2009 (UTC)

River Waveney map

The Waveney runs from west to east. I redrew it to run from souce (top) to sea (bottom). I agree that Oulton Broad may be on wrong side but the rest of it seems correct to me. Will take a look over the weekend. Haddiscoe Cut can easily be marked by the insertion on an additional line. Mjroots (talk) 18:57, 25 September 2009 (UTC)

River Parrett

Hi, I don't know if you still have River Parrett on your watchlist, but you have done some major editing on it in the past. Some of us have been trying to improve it recently & are considering trying to get it from its current GA status to FA. If you had any comments or suggestions for its improvement that would be great.— Rod talk 22:10, 21 December 2009 (UTC)

This article has now been submitted for FAC and discussion is ongoing at Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/River Parrett/archive1. A reviewer checking images said "There's also a template, Template:River Parrett map, which contains a diagram, and I can't see how that was created. Could the nominator explain, please?" I've added a response pointing to your page & I'm not really sure what the reviewer is asking, but if you could add anything that would be great.— Rod talk 09:18, 16 January 2010 (UTC)
Thanks - yes reviewer seems to have worked it out.— Rod talk 21:31, 18 January 2010 (UTC)
Maybe not - please see latest comment on Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/River Parrett/archive1.— Rod talk 08:19, 19 January 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for your help with that. It was not promoted at FAC & there are now new comments on the talk page. The most recent comments relate to bridges in the schematic but not in the article & those that are in the article by not in the template map. As you are the expert on these template maps can you help?— Rod talk 22:47, 10 February 2010 (UTC)

I have replaced the green junction overlaid icons with custom icons, as IE8 often does not display overlaid icons properly. I will have a look at the bridges tomorrow. Bob1960evens (talk) 21:35, 14 February 2010 (UTC)
