Information icon Hello, I'm Zackmann08. Thank you for your recent contributions to Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria. I noticed that when you added the image to the infobox, you added it as a thumbnail. In the future, please do not use thumbnails when adding images to an infobox (see WP:INFOBOXIMAGE). What does this mean? Well in the infobox, when you specify the image you wish to use, instead of doing it like this:

|image=[[File:SomeImage.jpg|thumb|Some image caption]]

Instead just supply the name of the image. So in this case you can simply do:

|image=SomeImage.jpg.

There will then be a separate parameter for the image caption such as |caption=Some image caption. Please note that this is a generic form message I am leaving on your page because you recently added a thumbnail to an infobox. The specific parameters for the image and caption may be different for the infobox you are using! Please consult the Template page for the infobox being used to see better documentation. Thanks! Conflict of interest and promotional editing

[edit]

Information icon Hello, RBGV. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places, or things you have written about in the article Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a COI may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic, and it is important when editing Wikipedia articles that such connections be completely transparent. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. In particular, we ask that you please:

  • avoid editing or creating articles related to you and your family, friends, school, company, club, or organization, as well as any competing companies' projects or products;
  • instead, you are encouraged to propose changes on the Talk pages of affected article(s) (see the {{request edit}} template);
  • when discussing affected articles, disclose your COI (see WP:DISCLOSE);
  • avoid linking to the Wikipedia article or to the website of your organization in other articles (see WP:SPAM);
  • exercise great caution so that you do not violate Wikipedia's content policies.

In addition, you must disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation (see WP:PAID).

Please take a few moments to read and review Wikipedia's policies regarding conflicts of interest, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, sourcing and autobiographies.

Also please note that editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you. Melcous (talk) 06:20, 3 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Your username and promotional editing

[edit]

Welcome to Wikipedia. I noticed that your username, "RBGV", may not comply with our username policy. Please note that you may not use a username that represents the name of a company, group, organization, product, or website. Examples of usernames that are not allowed include "XYZ Company", "MyWidgetsUSA.com", and "Foobar Museum of Art". However, you are permitted to use a username that contains such a name if it identifies you personally, such as "Sara Smith at XYZ Company", "Mark at WidgetsUSA", or "FoobarFan87".

Please also note that Wikipedia does not allow accounts to be shared by multiple people, and that you may not advocate for or promote any company, group, organization, product, or website, regardless of your username. Please also read our paid editing policy and our conflict of interest guideline. If you are a single individual and are willing to contribute to Wikipedia in an unbiased manner, please request a change of username, by completing this form, choosing a username that complies with our username policy. If you believe that your username does not violate our policy, please leave a note here explaining why. Thank you. Melcous (talk) 06:26, 3 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to Wikipedia. Because we have a policy against usernames which give the impression that the account represents a group, organization or website, I have blocked this account; please take a moment to create a new account with a username that represents only yourself as an individual and which complies with our username policy or request a change of username.

You should also read our conflict of interest guideline and be aware that promotional editing is not acceptable regardless of the username you choose.

If your username does not represent a group, organization or website, you may appeal this username block by adding the text {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}} at the bottom of your talk page.

You may simply create a new account, but you may prefer to change your username to one that complies with our username policy, so that your past contributions are associated with your new username. If you would prefer to change your username, you may appeal this username block by adding the text {{unblock-un|new username|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}} at the bottom of your talk page. Thank you. Requested username:

Request reason:

This isn't promotional content, information was incorrect and out of date and links were purely to external sources to explain things better but completely happy to remove them. Can this please be unblocked as the current information is so old it is incorrect. Thanks. Billy Guilfoyle (talk) 04:29, 5 October 2017 (UTC)

Decline reason:

Closing this procedurally. Responded below to second request. Jayron32 19:48, 11 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Comment Billy, can I suggest you read up about wikipedia's style including neutral point of view and not promotion, as the content you added was not merely updating information. Just for one example, sentences like "Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria is the custodian of landscapes and living plant collections renowned for their visual beauty and heritage ... it plays a vital role in helping people understand the value of plants." and "Melbourne Gardens as we see them today were shaped by three 19th century ‘giants’" belong on a brochure or website promoting the gardens, not in an encyclopedia. Thanks, Melcous (talk) 05:28, 5 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

That's fine, I'm happy to review style and remove anything that sounds promotional and stick to factual. I'll cut everything down and just keep it more as it was but would really appreciate it being unblocked so that it can be updated. Many thanks.

This user's unblock request has been reviewed by an administrator, who accepted the request.

Request reason:

I will ensure the updated page isn't promotional and purely factual and just update the information that is currently out of date and incorrect on the page, which is everything. would really appreciate it being unblocked. Billy Guilfoyle (talk) 04:29, 5 October 2017 (UTC)

Accept reason:

The blocking admin has agreed that this account can be unblocked; tread lightly and use article talk pages in places where you have a conflict of interest. By suggesting changes and requesting others do the work for you, it adds a layer of editing that will be helpful to ameliorate problems. Vaya con dios. --Jayron32 20:10, 11 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Conflict of interest editing

[edit]

Hello, as advised previously, you have a clear conflict of interest in editing the article Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria and should instead suggest changes to the talk page. The wording you included like "internationally renowned" and "historically and scientifically significant" and "play a vital role in helping people understand" is promotional and would need to be referenced to an independent, reliable source before it could even be considered being included. It would also help if you could clarify your relationship to the gardens, particularly because if you are employed there or being paid in any way to edit this article then you must declare this - see WP:PAID for more information.Melcous (talk) 12:52, 13 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hello. I have reverted the changes you made to Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria for a number of reasons, including:

  • you have a clear conflict of interest and have been asked multiple times not to edit the article directly but to suggest changes on the talk page
  • the information you added was not sourced
  • the style you wrote in was not encyclopaedic (for example using present tense for historical events)
  • the formatting you used did not comply with the manual of style

Please do not continue to make these kinds of edits, but instead propose any changes to the article on its talk page. Thank you, Melcous (talk) 06:21, 26 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I'm using information from the internet and I'm proposing that the information be relevant and up to date. How shall that happen if nobody does it? I thought this was a free information sharing space. You're making it incredibly difficult by continually reverting the page rather than allowing edits to fix the issues you're having.

This is not a "free information sharing space", it's an encyclopedia. Content must be sourced to reliable independent sources - these can be on the internet, but they need to be named and they should not be simply the organisation's own website. Once again, because you have a conflict of interest, you are asked to suggest changes on the article's talk page, and then another editor can review them and make them if they are appropriate.
