Hebrew and stuff

Sorry for not pinging you earlier, I'm still learning the ropes here.

If you translate anything else from Hebrew and want me to have a look at it, or have questions about Hebrew in general, please let me know. Also, if you want some help with your Hebrew user page (which looks a bit iffy) I'd help with that as well. Really, I'm mostly just happy I can help an experienced user with anything (especially a fellow math enthusiast). Professor Proof (talk) 15:39, 18 May 2018 (UTC)

NPR Newsletter No.11 25 May 2018

Hello Bellezzasolo, thank you for your work reviewing New Pages!

ACTRIAL:

 • WP:ACREQ has been implemented. The flow at the feed has dropped back to the levels during the trial. However, the backlog is on the rise again so please consider reviewing a few extra articles each day; a backlog approaching 5,000 is still far too high. An effort is also needed to ensure that older unsuitable older pages at the back of the queue do not get automatically indexed for Google.

Deletion tags

 • Do bear in mind that articles in the feed showing the trash can icon may have been tagged by inexperienced or non NPR rights holders. They require your further verification.

Backlog drive:

 • A backlog drive will take place from 10 through 20 June. Check out our talk page at WT:NPR for more details. NOTE: It is extremely important that we focus on quality reviewing. Despite our goal of reducing the backlog as much as possible, please do not rush while reviewing.

Editathons

 • There will be a large increase in the number of editathons in June. Please be gentle with new pages that obviously come from good faith participants, especially articles from developing economies and ones about female subjects. Consider using the 'move to draft' tool rather than bluntly tagging articles that may have potential but which cannot yet reside in mainspace.

Paid editing - new policy

 • Now that ACTRIAL is ACREQ, please be sure to look for tell-tale signs of undisclosed paid editing. Contact the creator if appropriate, and submit the issue to WP:COIN if necessary. There is a new global WMF policy that requires paid editors to connect to their adverts.

Subject-specific notability guidelines

 • The box at the right contains each of the subject-specific notability guidelines, please review any that are relevant BEFORE nominating an article for deletion.
 • Reviewers are requested to familiarise themselves with the new version of the notability guidelines for organisations and companies.

Not English

 • A common issue: Pages not in English or poor, unattributed machine translations should not reside in main space even if they are stubs. Please ensure you are familiar with WP:NPPNE. Check in Google for the language and content, tag as required, then move to draft if they do have potential.

News

 • Development is underway by the WMF on upgrades to the New Pages Feed, in particular ORES features that will help to identify COPYVIOs, and more granular options for selecting articles to review.
 • The next issue of The Signpost has been published. The newspaper is one of the best ways to stay up to date with news and new developments. between our newsletters.

Guideline and policy news

Technical news

 • IP-based cookie blocks should be deployed to English Wikipedia in June. This will cause the block of a logged-out user to be reloaded if they change IPs. This means in most cases, you may no longer need to do /64 range blocks on residential IPv6 addresses in order to effectively block the end user. It will also help combat abuse from IP hoppers in general. For the time being, it only affects users of the desktop interface.
 • The Wikimedia Foundation's Anti-Harassment Tools team will build granular types of blocks in 2018 (e.g. a block from uploading or editing specific pages, categories, or namespaces, as opposed to a full-site block). Feedback on the concept may be left at the talk page.
 • There is now a checkbox on Special:ListUsers to let you see only users in temporary user groups.
 • It is now easier for blocked mobile users to see why they were blocked.

Arbitration

 • A recent technical issue with the Arbitration Committee's spam filter inadvertently caused all messages sent to the committee through Wikipedia (i.e. Special:EmailUser/Arbitration Committee) to be discarded. If you attempted to send an email to the Arbitration Committee via Wikipedia between May 16 and May 31, your message was not received and you are encouraged to resend it. Messages sent outside of these dates or directly to the Arbitration Committee email address were not affected by this issue.

Notifier thingy

Primefac and I were actually talking the other day about seeing if a script could be worked up that would notify and then log the diff for Wikipedia:General sanctions/Blockchain and cryptocurrencies. You seem to have made one for the Arb DS, but I was wondering if there was any way it could be adapted for general sanctions logging (which has different requirements.) MER-C might be interested since he's been doing the heavy-lifting on crypto, and NeilN does a fair amount on Syria. TonyBallioni (talk) 22:59, 2 June 2018 (UTC)

@TonyBallioni:, I'm sure it's doable. I'm not so familiar with the GS system, but certainly if there's a list like at Template:Ds/alert, which is what my script pulls the data from, it should be fiarly easy to do. Bellezzasolo Discuss 23:02, 2 June 2018 (UTC)
There is apparently a generic template, but it doesn't seem to have any parameters that actually do anything from what I can tell (see Template:Gs/notification.) Right now I think the ones that are in use are Template:Blockchain notification, Template:Uw-castewarning, Template:GS/SCW&ISIL notification, Template:Gs/UKU notification, and Template:GS/ZG notification. The ZG one also appears like it needs to be added to Category:Wikipedia community-authorised general sanctions templates, but I don't do templatey things unless it is very basic.
Anyway, the real trick here would be getting a script to log the notification after it was made with a diff if that is possible. TonyBallioni (talk) 23:10, 2 June 2018 (UTC)
@TonyBallioni: When an API action is made, it returns a load of stuff. I'll have a play with my rollback script to see if it gives a diff. Bellezzasolo Discuss 23:20, 2 June 2018 (UTC)
Absolutely it is doable. I get the list title,pageid,summary,revid,old_revid,last_revid back. revid must be the revision just committed. Bellezzasolo Discuss 23:24, 2 June 2018 (UTC)
@TonyBallioni: When I ran the code below, I got revision ID 844150719 - [1]. It works, so I'll a GS script will be easily doable.

talkpage.append(function (data) { data.load(function (data) { alert(data.getCurrentID()); }); });

Bellezzasolo Discuss 23:39, 2 June 2018 (UTC)

If we're talking about the tag thingy a discretionary sanctions alert emits, I find them something only a developer would think is adequate. Consider how to determine if an editor has been notified of general sanctions:

 1. Go to the general sanctions logs page.
 2. Search the page via Ctrl-F for the editor's name.
 3. Done

To determine if an editor has been notified of discretionary sanctions:

 1. Figure out the code for the topic area.
 2. Add the template and click Publish.
 3. Search through all the tagged edits to see if an alert has been given for that topic area.
 4. Done.

Step 3 is a pain as the tag doesn't tell you what topic area the alert was for. --NeilN talk to me 04:28, 3 June 2018 (UTC)

@NeilN: That procedure should be quite easily automated. I'm expanding the scope of the script, there's no reason it couldn't do all of that. Bellezzasolo Discuss 04:37, 3 June 2018 (UTC)
If you can improve the process, thank you! --NeilN talk to me 04:42, 3 June 2018 (UTC)
FWIW, I actually prefer the tag thingy and find the GS logs more bothersome because of the manual logging of diffs (which is why I wanted a script for it in the first place ) Either way, neither is a particularly user friendly way of dealing with the paperwork, IMO, and anything would be an improvement to both processes. TonyBallioni (talk) 04:59, 3 June 2018 (UTC)
@TonyBallioni and NeilN: I've got the discretionary sanctions feature working. It's fairly easy to dig through the abuse filter, and the codes were already worked out. Bellezzasolo Discuss 07:57, 3 June 2018 (UTC)
@TonyBallioni and NeilN: Here's the script's output - testcase. I still don't have it looking for previous GS notifications, but other than that, it seems to all be in order. Bellezzasolo Discuss 01:09, 4 June 2018 (UTC)
Thanks. Do you have installation instructions? I tried it in my common.js and it doesn't seem to be working (or I can't find it.) TonyBallioni (talk) 01:35, 4 June 2018 (UTC)
@TonyBallioni: I copied your script environment, it looked like it was working to me. Sometimes, it doesn't show up immediately, but after one or two pages it might. Bellezzasolo Discuss 02:10, 4 June 2018 (UTC)
This is what I see when I go to Twinkle. Does it need to be on the Twinkle preferences or is it part of the common.js. TonyBallioni (talk) 02:17, 4 June 2018 (UTC)
It's just on my common.js, it shouldn't need anything else. All I can think of is a disagreement with another script, although I can't see why. Bellezzasolo Discuss 02:20, 4 June 2018 (UTC)
@TonyBallioni: Just a crazy thought, try the Page and User portlet links. It might be on one of those. Bellezzasolo Discuss 02:22, 4 June 2018 (UTC)
Yeah, removed those and still not working, don't know why. The only "dated" script I use is easyblock, which has never conflicted with Twinkle in the past. I reset my twinkle prefs to defaults, and still doesn't show. Is it just supposed to show up as a link like ARV, Block, Warn, etc. TonyBallioni (talk) 02:38, 4 June 2018 (UTC)
@TonyBallioni: Yeah, there should be an "ARB" in there somewhere. It normally shows at the top, but I've seen it at the bottom too. Bellezzasolo Discuss 02:43, 4 June 2018 (UTC)
I have a lead. I got it to avoid showing, when Twinkle hasn't loaded. I'll make sure it loads with the page. Bellezzasolo Discuss 02:45, 4 June 2018 (UTC)
I removed all my other scripts, then restored them, and now it appears to work. TonyBallioni (talk) 02:50, 4 June 2018 (UTC)
I changed the code to prevent it loading before Twinkle, which might have been it. Anyway, all's well that ends well. Bellezzasolo Discuss 02:52, 4 June 2018 (UTC)

One last thing on this (sorry, you've been so helpful!): is it possible to get WP:GS/Crypto in it? Thanks. TonyBallioni (talk) 20:00, 12 June 2018 (UTC)

@TonyBallioni: Done, e.g. notice with log. The changes required were this edit to Template:Gs/topics, then this edit to Template:Gs/topics/table, to keep the list up to date. Bellezzasolo Discuss 09:02, 13 June 2018 (UTC)

That fishy SPI

Just so you know, the user who filed the SPI as well as the user who first tagged it, and probably the reported users as well (though who knows, as they haven't edited yet) are sockpuppets of the same long-term abuser. Creating a few pairs of socks as a time to do weird good-hand/bad-hand stuff is one of their MOs. I'm removing their post from your talk page as well per WP:DENY, and hope you won't be bothered by them in the future. The sockmaster is Nsmutte. --

Mario Alford (Gridiron Football)

Just touching base about why you restored 'Legal Troubles' section for Mario Alford. These are not accurate and there are no current warrants or arrests for him. It was deleted for this reason, and none of the links that had been listed were accurate in any case. Please let me know how we can ensure that this is not under his page as it is slander in his profession. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 199.212.64.207 (talk) 15:12, 18 June 2018 (UTC)

It looked like vandalism, in as much as the removal of the section was unexplained. On closer inspection, the citations given previously don't satisfy WP:BLPPRIMARY, so the removal of the section is the right course of action. Bellezzasolo Discuss 16:50, 18 June 2018 (UTC)

June 2018

Hey Bellezzasolo, if it isn't strictly necessary to test this on enwiki, might I suggest using testwiki: or the beta cluster to test these messages? The messages can be alarming to watchers. Best, Kevin (aka L235 · t · c) 18:18, 21 June 2018 (UTC)
@L235: unfortunately, it needs Twinkle to work, so it's hard to get it set up to work on other wikis. It's nearly done, I'm just working on the logging system now, so I can disable the block notice feature. Bellezzasolo Discuss 18:22, 21 June 2018 (UTC)

RevDel request

I'm looking for a revdel on 846954142, this diff. It involves off-wiki evidence being presented publicly in an Arbcom case. Thanks! Bellezzasolo Discuss 23:03, 21 June 2018 (UTC)

@Alexf: You're active, could you take a look please? Bellezzasolo Discuss 23:48, 21 June 2018 (UTC)
@Bellezzasolo: Never worked on this before. You want me to RevDel all of that diff? Unclear and don't want to screw it up. Please confirm. -- Alexf(talk) 00:19, 22 June 2018 (UTC)
@Alexf: I only removed the off-wiki bits and replaced them with redacted, I probably left more than should have been, but..., as I understand revdel, if you change the visibility for that revision only, it should be OK. Bellezzasolo Discuss 00:22, 22 June 2018 (UTC)

Guideline and policy news

 • An RfC about the deletion of drafts closed with a consensus to change the wording of WP:NMFD. Specifically, a draft that has been repeatedly resubmitted and declined at AfC without any substantial improvement may be deleted at MfD if consensus determines that it is unlikely to ever meet the requirements for mainspace and it otherwise meets one of the reasons for deletion outlined in the deletion policy.
 • A request for comment closed with a consensus that the promising draft template cannot be used to indefinitely prevent a WP:G13 speedy deletion nomination.

Technical news

 • Starting on July 9, the WMF Security team, Trust & Safety, and the broader technical community will be seeking input on an upcoming change that will restrict editing of site-wide JavaScript and CSS to a new technical administrators user group. Bureaucrats and stewards will be able to grant this right per a community-defined process. The intention is to reduce the number of accounts who can edit frontend code to those who actually need to, which in turn lessens the risk of malicious code being added that compromises the security and privacy of everyone who accesses Wikipedia. For more information, please review the FAQ.
 • Syntax highlighting has been graduated from a Beta feature on the English Wikipedia. To enable this feature, click the highlighter icon () in your editing toolbar (or under the hamburger menu in the 2017 wikitext editor). This feature can help prevent you from making mistakes when editing complex templates.
 • IP-based cookie blocks should be deployed to English Wikipedia in July (previously scheduled for June).

 • Currently around 20% of admins have enabled two-factor authentication, up from 17% a year ago. If you haven't already enabled it, please consider doing so. Regardless if you use 2FA, please practice appropriate account security by ensuring your password is secure and unique to Wikimedia.

NPR Newsletter No.12 30 July 2018

Chart of the New Pages Patrol backlog for the past 6 months. (Purge)

Hello Bellezzasolo, thank you for your work reviewing New Pages!

June backlog drive

Overall the June backlog drive was a success, reducing the last 3,000 or so to below 500. However, as expected, 90% of the patrolling was done by less than 10% of reviewers.
Since the drive closed, the backlog has begun to rise sharply again and is back up to nearly 1,400 already. Please help reduce this total and keep it from raising further by reviewing some articles each day.

New technology, new rules
 • New features are shortly going to be added to the Special:NewPagesFeed which include a list of drafts for review, OTRS flags for COPYVIO, and more granular filter preferences. More details can be found at this page.
 • Probationary permissions: Now that PERM has been configured to allow expiry dates to all minor user rights, new NPR flag holders may sometimes be limited in the first instance to 6 months during which their work will be assessed for both quality and quantity of their reviews. This will allow admins to accord the right in borderline cases rather than make a flat out rejection.
 • Current reviewers who have had the flag for longer than 6 months but have not used the permissions since they were granted will have the flag removed, but may still request to have it granted again in the future, subject to the same probationary period, if they wish to become an active reviewer.
Editathons
 • Editathons will continue through August. Please be gentle with new pages that obviously come from good faith participants, especially articles from developing economies and ones about female subjects. Consider using the 'move to draft' tool rather than bluntly tagging articles that may have potential but which cannot yet reside in mainspace.
The Signpost
 • The next issue of the monthly magazine will be out soon. The newspaper is an excellent way to stay up to date with news and new developments between our newsletters. Guideline and policy news

 • After a discussion at Meta, a new user group called "interface administrators" (formerly "technical administrator") has been created. Come the end of August, interface admins will be the only users able to edit site-wide JavaScript and CSS pages like MediaWiki:Common.js and MediaWiki:Common.css, or edit other user's personal JavaScript and CSS. The intention is to improve security and privacy by reducing the number of accounts which could be used to compromise the site or another user's account through malicious code. The new user group can be assigned and revoked by bureaucrats. Discussion is ongoing to establish details for implementing the group on the English Wikipedia.
 • Following a request for comment, the WP:SISTER style guideline now states that in the mainspace, interwiki links to Wikinews should only be made as per the external links guideline. This generally means that within the body of an article, you should not link to Wikinews about a particular event that is only a part of the larger topic. Wikinews links in "external links" sections can be used where helpful, but not automatically if an equivalent article from a reliable news outlet could be linked in the same manner.

Administrators' newsletter – September 2018

News and updates for administrators from the past month (August 2018).

Administrator changes

added None
removed AsterionCrisco 1492KFKudpungLizRandykittySpartaz
renamed Optimist on the runVoice of Clam

Interface administrator changes

added AmorymeltzerMr. StradivariusMusikAnimalMSGJTheDJXaosflux

Guideline and policy news

 • Following a "stop-gap" discussion, six users have temporarily been made interface administrators while discussion is ongoing for a more permanent process for assigning the permission. Interface administrators are now the only editors allowed to edit sitewide CSS and JavaScript pages, as well as CSS/JS pages in another user's userspace. Previously, all administrators had this ability. The right can be granted and revoked by bureaucrats.

Technical news

 • Because of a data centre test you will be able to read but not edit the wikis for up to an hour on 12 September and 10 October. This will start at 14:00 (UTC). You might lose edits if you try to save during this time. The time when you can't edit might be shorter than an hour.
 • Some abuse filter variables have changed. They are now easier to understand for non-experts. The old variables will still work but filter editors are encouraged to replace them with the new ones. You can find the list of changed variables on mediawiki.org. They have a note which says Deprecated. Use ... instead. An example is article_text which is now page_title.
 • Abuse filters can now use how old a page is. The variable is page_age.

Arbitration

 • The Arbitration Committee has resolved to perform a round of Checkuser and Oversight appointments. The usernames of all applicants will be shared with the Functionaries team, and they will be requested to assist in the vetting process. The deadline to submit an application is 23:59 UTC, 12 September, and the candidates that move forward will be published on-wiki for community comments on 18 September.

TracklistData

I saw you thanked me for writing that template code, so I just wanted to let you know TracklistData is finished. As of right now, it's very barebones, and includes only the track name and length. It's very possible to add all the other information, I just wanted to write this as a proof of concept to check that it is possible.

To use, try TracklistData in articles that are albums or for articles that are not albums.

NPR Newsletter No.13 18 September 2018

Hello Bellezzasolo, thank you for your work reviewing New Pages!

The New Page Feed currently has 2700 unreviewed articles, up from just 500 at the start of July. For a while we were falling behind by an average of about 40 articles per day, but we have stabilised more recently. Please review some articles from the back of the queue if you can (Sort by: 'Oldest' at Special:NewPagesFeed), as we are very close to having articles older than one month.

Project news
As part of this project, the feed will have some larger updates to functionality next month. Specifically, ORES predictions will be built in, which will automatically flag articles for potential issues such as vandalism or spam. Copyright violation detection will also be added to the new page feed. See the projects's talk page for more info.
Other
Moving to Draft and Page Mover
 • Some unsuitable new articles can be best reviewed by moving them to the draft space, but reviewers need to do this carefully and sparingly. It is most useful for topics that look like they might have promise, but where the article as written would be unlikely to survive AfD. If the article can be easily fixed, or if the only issue is a lack of sourcing that is easily accessible, tagging or adding sources yourself is preferable. If sources do not appear to be available and the topic does not appear to be notable, tagging for deletion is preferable (PROD/AfD/CSD as appropriate). See additional guidance at WP:DRAFTIFY.
 • If the user moves the draft back to mainspace, or recreates it in mainspace, please do not re-draftify the article (although swapping it to maintain the page history may be advisable in the case of copy-paste moves). AfC is optional except for editors with a clear conflict of interest.
 • Articles that have been created in contravention of our paid-editing-requirements or written from a blatant NPOV perspective, or by authors with a clear COI might also be draftified at discretion.
 • The best tool for draftification is User:Evad37/MoveToDraft.js(info). Kindly adapt the text in the dialogue-pop-up as necessary (the default can also be changed like this). Note that if you do not have the Page Mover userright, the redirect from main will be automatically tagged as CSD R2, but in some cases it might be better to make this a redirect to a different page instead.
 • The Page Mover userright can be useful for New Page Reviewers; occasionally page swapping is needed during NPR activities, and it helps avoid excessive R2 nominations which must be processed by admins. Note that the Page Mover userright has higher requirements than the NPR userright, and is generally given to users active at Requested Moves. Only reviewers who are very experienced and are also very active reviewers are likely to be granted it solely for NPP activities.
List of other useful scripts for New Page Reviewing

 • Twinkle provides a lot of the same functionality as the page curation tools, and some reviewers prefer to use the Twinkle tools for some/all tasks. It can be activated simply in the gadgets section of 'preferences'. There are also a lot of options available at the Twinkle preferences panel after you install the gadget.
 • In terms of other gadgets for NPR, HotCat is worth turning on. It allows you to easily add, remove, and change categories on a page, with name suggestions.
 • MoreMenu also adds a bunch of very useful links for diagnosing and fixing page issues.
 • User:Equazcion/ScriptInstaller.js(info): Installing scripts doesn't have to be complicated. Go to your common.js and copy importScript( 'User:Equazcion/ScriptInstaller.js' ); into an empty line, now you can install all other scripts with the click of a button from the script page! (Note you need to be at the ".js" page for the script for the install button to appear, not the information page)
 • User:TheJosh/Scripts/NewPagePatrol.js(info): Creates a scrolling new pages list at the left side of the page. You can change the number of pages shown by adding the following to the next line on your common.js page (immediately after the line importing this script): npp_num_pages=20; (Recommended 20, but you can use any number from 1 to 50).
 • User:Primefac/revdel.js(info): Is requesting revdel complicated and time consuming? This script helps simplify the process. Just have the Copyvio source URL and go to the history page and collect your diff IDs and you can drop them into the script Popups and it will create a revdel request for you.
 • User:Lourdes/PageCuration.js(info): Creates a "Page Curation" link to Special:NewPagesFeed up near your sandbox link.
 • User:Writ Keeper/Scripts/deletionFinder.js: Creates links next to the title of each page which show up if it has been previously deleted or nominated for deletion.
 • User:Evad37/rater.js(info): A fantastic tool for adding WikiProject templates to article talk pages. If you add: rater_autostartNamespaces = 0; to the next line on your common.js, the prompt will pop up automatically if a page has no Wikiproject templates on the talk page (note: this can be a bit annoying if you review redirects or dab pages commonly).

"Korean-Born Australian"

I see some sort of reference to racist posts by "Korean Sentry," I think on his home page, but when I click-through here I can't seem to find the connection.

FWIW, the one thing of his that I have seen is simply witless, both sneering at gays and at Thais. I answered his post with a contemptuous contradiction on the Thai Culture talk page and a mocking post to him on his home page, and then I saw your post. I want to offer you congratulations, but I know so little about Wikipedia that I don't think I can offer anything more in the way of useful help.

Wikipedia s a huge and important resource and low-level pests of Korean Sentry's type are cumulatively a huge threat to it. I've watched the Internet with interest since before it started. I.e. I visited University of Waterloo, one of the first two packet-switched networks, in 1961, and read the original Carnegie Commission binders on the subject '61~65. I interviewed Vannevar Bush on the subject at his home in, I forget, Lawrence or Brookline or wherever it was in 1965, and when the second Internet, the present one, came into existence in 1970 I was user #300 on ARPAnet . (The first "true" internet, ignored in most of the histories, was Usenet, not the later e-mail app of the same name but a packet-switched network written by Bolt Beranek and Newman for Digital Equipment, to connect all their customers. But I I digress...)

Wikipedia is one of those things that represents the best potential of the Internet -- and as you said someplace, it is maintained by the fact that anybody can edit, revert, and so on and so forth. You are doing valuable work, and I wish you well.

On the clod "Korean Sentry" I don't know what the answer is. Obviously if he feels he has an interest in making war, he can keep changing names forever. If he attacks me in response to my joshing I shall erase my traces of it from Wikipedia and try to answer him with reason.

Good luck in the excellent work you are doing.

Best wishes.

Guideline and policy news

Technical news

 • Partial blocks should be available for testing in October on the Test Wikipedia and the Beta-Cluster. This new feature allows admins to block users from editing specific pages and in the near-future, namespaces and uploading files. You can expect more updates and an invitation to help with testing once it is available.
 • The Foundations' Anti-Harassment Tools team is currently looking for input on how to measure the effectiveness of blocks. This is in particular related to how they will measure the success of the aforementioned partial blocks.
 • Because of a data centre test, you will be able to read but not edit the Wikimedia projects for up to an hour on 10 October. This will start at 14:00 (UTC). You might lose edits if you try to save during this time.

Arbitration

 • The Arbitration Committee has, by motion, amended the procedure on functionary inactivity.
 • The community consultation for 2018 CheckUser and Oversight appointments has concluded. Appointments will be made by October 11.
 • Following a request for comment, the size of the Arbitration Committee will be decreased to 13 arbitrators, starting in 2019. Additionally, the minimum support percentage required to be appointed to a two-year term on ArbCom has been increased to 60%. ArbCom candidates who receive between 50% and 60% support will be appointed to one-year terms instead.
 • Nominations for the 2018 Arbitration Committee Electoral Commission are being accepted until 12 October. These are the editors who help run the ArbCom election smoothly. If you are interested in volunteering for this role, please consider nominating yourself.

Administrators' newsletter – November 2018

News and updates for administrators from the past month (October 2018).

Guideline and policy news

Technical news

 • Partial blocks is now available for testing on the Test Wikipedia. The new functionality allows you to block users from editing specific pages. Bugs may exist and can be reported on the local talk page or on Meta. A discussion regarding deployment to English Wikipedia will be started by community liaisons sometime in the near future.
 • A user script is now available to quickly review unblock requests.
 • The 2019 Community Wishlist Survey is now accepting new proposals until November 11, 2018. The results of this survey will determine what software the Wikimedia Foundation's Community Tech team will work on next year. Voting on the proposals will take place from November 16 to November 30, 2018. Specifically, there is a proposal category for admins and stewards that may be of interest.

Arbitration

 • Eligible editors will be invited to nominate themselves as candidates in the 2018 Arbitration Committee Elections starting on November 4 until November 13. Voting will begin on November 19 and last until December 2.
 • The Arbitration Committee's email address has changed to arbcom-en@wikimedia.org. Other email lists, such as functionaries-en and clerks-l, remain unchanged.

Mentoring

Hi. At [2] I agreed to get some mentoring from you to know more about the interesting technical side of templates. However, I have a quick question. How does the mentoring process work? Pkbwcgs (talk) 19:45, 11 October 2018 (UTC)

@Pkbwcgs:, Wikipedia:Mentorship has some information, although it's not exactly focused on technical mentorships. I would say that the key to it is that I review your template edits, and provide suggestions. Also, if you have a question, don't hesitate to ask me (or, indeed, anybody!). I would say that the first thing to do is look at sandboxing. Bellezzasolo Discuss 20:41, 11 October 2018 (UTC)
I have a question, what is the best way of merging the function of two templates or modules together? I don't want to break any functions or get the merge incorrect. I don't want to merge anything templates or modules right now but it is just useful to know. Pkbwcgs (talk) 19:30, 14 October 2018 (UTC)
@Pkbwcgs: Oh my, template merges. I've never actually done one, but I'll answer in full shortly, since I'm currently on a mobile. Bellezzasolo Discuss 20:42, 14 October 2018 (UTC)
@Pkbwcgs: I've written this rough guide. Wikipedia:Merging Templates. It's rough because the approaches to merging different templates can be very different. @Primefac and MSGJ: you guys are much more familiar with the process than I am, I'd greatly appreciate it if you could take a quick look and tell me what I've got wrong or ommitted. Bellezzasolo Discuss 20:50, 16 October 2018 (UTC)
How is my work in trying to merge Template:Infobox Muslim leader into Template:Infobox religious biography at User:Pkbwcgs/merge sandbox. Pkbwcgs (talk) 19:54, 20 October 2018 (UTC)
Pkbwcgs, here is my process for merging templates:
 1. Find which parameters are exactly the same
 2. Find which parameters are same function, different name
 3. Find which parameters in the "to merge" template need to be added into the target.
 4. Add the params from #3, and (if there aren't too many) add the params from #2 as alternate params
 5. Redirect or wrap the "to merge" template. I do the former if there are few (if any) params from step #2. I do the latter if there are significant layout/format differences between the two templates.
The hardest step of this process is step #4, as you'll see if you check out my edits for the merger of infobox country and Template:infobox former country. You need to make sure that every old param is accounted for, and while some layout changes are inevitable, they also need to make sense.
My biggest piece of advice when doing a complex merger (i.e. more than just "add a couple of params and redirect") is to test the heck out of it. Test it with all of the old params, test it with all of the new params, etc. Primefac (talk) 14:37, 21 October 2018 (UTC)
@Primefac: When I was testing merging two templates at my merge sandbox, it took me around two hours and it is still not finished. Does it normally take a long time? Pkbwcgs (talk) 16:25, 21 October 2018 (UTC)
Yes. While I didn't work on it full-time, it took me almost four months to get in enough time and testing to merge the IB country/former country templates. When I merged the various IB cricket templates (there were 5? in total) it took me the better part of two weeks to make sure everything worked out properly. A job well done is not a job done quickly. Primefac (talk) 16:29, 21 October 2018 (UTC)
@Primefac: It is very difficult to merge Template:Infobox Muslim leader to Template:Infobox religious biography and I am having a go at User:Pkbwcgs/merge sandbox. Can you please give some suggestions. Pkbwcgs (talk) 16:54, 21 October 2018 (UTC)
Well, I'm not sure what sort of issues you're experiencing, since I haven't looked at the templates or your merger in much detail, but "tweaks" like this are going to break the infobox every time. The label number must match the data value it is associated with. At this point I think it's best to move this off Bellezzasolo's page (unless they don't mind it being here) and discuss somewhere else, like the template talk or WT:WPT, because we're going to have to discuss how infoboxes work and how to properly implement a merger. Primefac (talk) 17:52, 21 October 2018 (UTC)
@Primefac: I'm sure you will be please with this because my merge at User:Pkbwcgs/merge sandbox works! Pkbwcgs (talk) 19:11, 21 October 2018 (UTC)
@Pkbwcgs and Primefac: It looks good to me: User:Bellezzasolo/sandbox/testcases. Bellezzasolo Discuss 22:33, 21 October 2018 (UTC)
Thanks. Is there any improvements that could be done in terms of where the parameters are located? Pkbwcgs (talk) 07:31, 22 October 2018 (UTC)

Um... other than the fact that you've completely moved around what looks like all of the parameters... ideally the merger target largely stay the same. For example, you've moved the |disciples= into the "Personal" section instead of being in the "religious career" section where it was originally. Primefac (talk) 11:26, 22 October 2018 (UTC)

Yes, some minor tweaking needed. Of course, during mergers you can't get everything as before (maybe you could include a layout parameter, but nobody does that!) But in terms of the technical merger itself, it looks good. Bellezzasolo Discuss 12:20, 22 October 2018 (UTC)
I think it is all done now. It is ready to be actually merged to the real template. I already done some tweaking and removal of duplicate parameters yesterday. Pkbwcgs (talk) 08:22, 24 October 2018 (UTC)
@Pkbwcgs: A few observations. Firstly, the born/died fields, and maybe some similar, probably should be under the "personal" details. Secondly, {{#switch:{}|Hinduism|Jainism|Sikhism=|#default=Religious career}} is inconsistent with Template:Infobox religious biography's {{#switch:{}|Hinduism|Jainism|Sikhism=Religious career|#default=Senior posting}}. Finally, I would suggest that the religion/sect fields are moved out of the career section to be above personal details, again in keeping with religious biography. Other than that though, it looks ready to go to me. Bellezzasolo Discuss 12:33, 24 October 2018 (UTC)
I have made the amendments. Pkbwcgs (talk) 14:04, 24 October 2018 (UTC)
@Pkbwcgs: I made a minor fix, as the if statement for the Religious career section still included the religion parameter, which was causing an empty section to be displayed on my testcases. I'm having a good look through for any other minor issues. Bellezzasolo Discuss 14:50, 24 October 2018 (UTC)
Shall I copy User:Pkbwcgs/merge sandbox to Template:Infobox religious biography? Pkbwcgs (talk) 16:14, 26 October 2018 (UTC)
@Pkbwcgs: I wouldn't say to do it quite yet, I'd seek consensus to make the change. It can't hurt. Bellezzasolo Discuss 19:25, 29 October 2018 (UTC)
Sorry for the delay. I have opened up a thread at Template talk:Infobox Muslim leader to see if consensus can be seeked from that thread. Pkbwcgs (talk) 17:36, 5 November 2018 (UTC)
Since opening a thread at Template talk:Infobox Muslim leader, there has been nothing said or anything. Does that mean that I should just go forward with my merge? Pkbwcgs (talk) 09:17, 11 November 2018 (UTC)
I have done another merge today. I have merged Template:Infobox Christian church body with Template:Infobox Christian denomination at User:Pkbwcgs/merge sandbox/2. It looks really good. Pkbwcgs (talk) 10:14, 11 November 2018 (UTC)

Something is not right about my merge between Template:Infobox Bishopric and Template:Infobox diocese. Can you please help me out. Pkbwcgs (talk) 18:34, 11 November 2018 (UTC)

@Pkbwcgs: There's a few things there, comes with merging. One that's going to be really fun to sort out is the default behavior in Template:Infobox Bishopric to display bishopric without a parameter. I've made it conditional in the sandbox, which means that any occurrences of {{Infobox Bishopric are going to have to be replaced with {{Infobox diocese|bishopric=|. No big issue, to be honest. More fun is the title, I'm still working on that. Bellezzasolo Discuss 13:42, 12 November 2018 (UTC)
I've ironed out all the obvious issues at User:Bellezzasolo/sandbox/testcases. Bellezzasolo Discuss 14:08, 12 November 2018 (UTC)

Padlocks

Hi Bellezzasolo, I don't have time tonight - but before we mass update all the padlock images, the files need to be uploaded locally and protected. — xaosflux Talk 04:01, 13 November 2018 (UTC)

@Xaosflux: Hi, I realized that this needed doing after I made the module update (I've reverted it for now). Hence I've uploaded local versions and asked at Requests for permissions/File mover for the right to move them over the Commons versions. Of course, there's still protection after that, but I've tried to cut down on the work a bit. Bellezzasolo Discuss 04:07, 13 November 2018 (UTC)
Although it looks like I wrongly assumed that file mover would allow overiding commons. It's one for RM then. Bellezzasolo Discuss 04:11, 13 November 2018 (UTC)
I've protected them at Commons and Mz7 create protected them locally. If that is acceptable with you Xaosflux it is all set. --Majora (talk) 04:13, 13 November 2018 (UTC)
Yeah, I'm not sure what the functional difference is between uploading locally and then protecting, or just create-protecting. For now, I've create-protected, but I'm happy to defer to whatever you all think is best. Mz7 (talk) 04:16, 13 November 2018 (UTC)
@Mz7: From the wording at Template:Keep local high-risk I guess it's that we just don't trust those commons admins. Bellezzasolo Discuss 04:19, 13 November 2018 (UTC)
Not quite sure whether I should be insulted or not...
In any case, whatever you all want to do. The padlocks are set so that you can modify the description page but you cannot move or upload over them on Commons. --Majora (talk) 04:22, 13 November 2018 (UTC)
I can't see any function difference between the local protection and the current situation either, it should be safe to reenable the new icons. Bellezzasolo Discuss 04:27, 13 November 2018 (UTC)
@Bellezzasolo and Majora: yes its mostly to avoid any issues with 'those commons' people that have rarely occurred. The protection I was referring to is just "upload" protection - it could be very embarrassing for image vandalism. — xaosflux Talk 12:42, 13 November 2018 (UTC)

Is there a reason not to add them to the cascade-protected page? Pretty sure the old icons were/are. ~ Amory (utc) 23:24, 14 November 2018 (UTC)

@Amorymeltzer: I don't see that as necessary - it's not a big deal if someone edits the description, and in most cases the "click" is bypassed so they won't just end up on the description page. — xaosflux Talk 23:45, 14 November 2018 (UTC)
I'm not sure where better to write this, but thanks to everyone involved in changing the padlock symbols. The new versions are much more intuitive. Certes (talk) 23:48, 14 November 2018 (UTC)

File mover granted

Hello Bellezzasolo. Your account has been granted the "filemover" user right, either following a request for it or due to a clear need for the ability to move files. Please take a moment to review Wikipedia:File mover for more information on this user right and under what circumstances it is okay to move files. When you move a file please remember to update any links to the new name as well! If you do not want the file mover right anymore, just let me know, and I'll remove it. Thank you, and happy editing! TheSandDoctor Talk 08:01, 13 November 2018 (UTC)

I'll just note, however, that wouldn't the task you wanted this right for be accomplished faster if the images were simply downloaded and reuploaded (or if we asked XYZtSpace to locally upload them)? I don't remember file movers (or anyone) being able to move files across wikis (without the use of some external tool (that might need this right)). Anarchyte (talk | work) 11:51, 13 November 2018 (UTC)
@Anarchyte: I've already uploaded to different names. I assumed initially that with file mover, I'd be able to move them over the commons versions (I'd already tried directly uploading over with no success). It unfortunately looks like that specific perm is still bundled up in the admin toolset, so I can't do what I wanted. However, I'm sure the perm will come in useful anyway in dealing with new uploads. Bellezzasolo Discuss 11:55, 13 November 2018 (UTC)
If all that is preventing this change from going live is moving "shackle1" to "shackle", I can go ahead and do that and then protect them. I know very little about how the templates/modules work however, so someone else will have to make the final changes. Anarchyte (talk | work) 12:01, 13 November 2018 (UTC)
@Anarchyte: Brilliant, it's only the files that need doing, I can then do the module stuff. There's a list at WP:AN#Implementation of this RfC with handy move buttons. They'll probably need upload/move protection after the move as well. Bellezzasolo Discuss 12:03, 13 November 2018 (UTC)
As the boilerplate automatically posted here states, if at any time you wish for this flag to be removed, just let me or another admin know. --TheSandDoctor Talk 16:06, 13 November 2018 (UTC)
@TheSandDoctor: I thought there'd be stuff to do, but it doesn't really look like there is. I don't think I'm likely to use the perm, so please can you remove it. Bellezzasolo Discuss 20:12, 15 November 2018 (UTC)
Done If you ever want it back, feel free to ping me or re-request at WP:PERM. --TheSandDoctor Talk 20:19, 15 November 2018 (UTC)

Does it require a lot of waiting time to actually merge the two templates or can I merge them immediately? Pkbwcgs (talk) 18:23, 14 November 2018 (UTC)
@Pkbwcgs: I generally leave 48 hours for template edits to allow for any objections. Given the scale of a merge, 72 hours might be more appropriate. Bellezzasolo Discuss 19:55, 15 November 2018 (UTC)
What about User:Pkbwcgs/merge sandbox which has been lying around for a long time? Pkbwcgs (talk) 20:04, 15 November 2018 (UTC)
@Pkbwcgs: Yeah, I'd say that's OK. Bellezzasolo Discuss 20:08, 15 November 2018 (UTC)
Okay. So, how do I start the actual merge in the template space? Pkbwcgs (talk) 20:09, 15 November 2018 (UTC)
It is not working. When I redirected Template:Infobox Muslim leader to Template:Infobox religious biography, the pages with Template:Infobox Muslim leader were not showing the infobox properly. Chart of the New Pages Patrol backlog for the past 6 months.

Hello Bellezzasolo,

Community Wishlist Survey – NPP needs you – Vote NOW
 • Community Wishlist Voting takes place 16 to 30 November for the Page Curation and New Pages Feed improvements, and other software requests. The NPP community is hoping for a good turnout in support of the requests to Santa for the tools we need. This is very important as we have been asking the Foundation for these upgrades for 4 years.
If this proposal does not make it into the top ten, it is likely that the tools will be given no support at all for the foreseeable future. So please put in a vote today.
We are counting on significant support not only from our own ranks, but from everyone who is concerned with maintaining a Wikipedia that is free of vandalism, promotion, flagrant financial exploitation and other pollution.
With all 650 reviewers voting for these urgently needed improvements, our requests would be unlikely to fail. See also The Signpost Special report: 'NPP: This could be heaven or this could be hell for new users – and for the reviewers', and if you are not sure what the wish list is all about, take a sneak peek at an article in this month's upcoming issue of The Signpost which unfortunately due to staff holidays and an impending US holiday will probably not be published until after voting has closed.

ArbCom 2018 election voter message

Hello, Bellezzasolo. Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 3 December. All users who registered an account before Sunday, 28 October 2018, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Thursday, 1 November 2018 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2018 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:42, 19 November 2018 (UTC)

This needs a review by the administrators

It is about an anti-Semitic user who denies the existence of the Hebrew people at Talk:Hebrew language. This user is reported[3] for 3RR violations and saved his ass unblocked. The result of the report is "page protected". So I please ask you for intervention. Because I saw you are the only one who noted that this user did an Obvious 3RR violation. The user denied any responsibility and claimed to have "misunderstood" the three revert rule. It is interesting that a year ago the user was reported again for a 3RR violation at the same article and pretended AGAIN to have misunderstood the rule, and in the report[4] from Iyyar, 5777 the 3RR was explained to the linguist: "Actually, the 3RR states: An editor must not perform more than three reverts on a single page-whether involving the same or different material." It is even more interesting what this "misunderstanding" linguist said after being asked why couldn't learn the rule for so much time. This user then acknowledged understanding and held another lie switching from "misunderstanding" to "forgetting" the 3RR. Very arrogant and obvious lies. The violation of reverts plus the contradicting lying to the admins and personal attacks justify a long or idefenite block. Could you please ask the admins to review the result of the report "Page protected"? I am just curious what the review of these lies would be. Good week! 77.138.178.112 (talk) 05:55, 25 November 2018 (UTC)

Help with map!

Hello Belezzasolo! I saw your fine work on the AIEA locations map. I am trying to modify this page here which was clearly below acceptable levels https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/World_Federation_of_United_Nations_Associations The thing is this organisation is membership-based. They got 100 or so members. I wanted to use your map to add all of them. The problems I am facing are: 1) I would like to use it outside of the sidebar 2) I would like to add a zoom effect on Asia/Oceania, South America and Africa too 3) it is quite "fragile" as it is because of the mutliple lines. Regarding "3" I found this map here: https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Philippine_Airlines the code of which is more condensed. But it doesnt have the "zoom". Any help on any of the above would be very very much appreciated. Needles to say i'm not a pro.:)--APG1984 (talk) 20:36, 22 November 2018 (UTC)

@APG1984: Regarding the zoom function, you were missing that there's an outer that needs to know what the maps to be displayed are too! I've made an edit for now which should give you some ideas - [5].
You can use the template outside of the infobox - like so:

Thank you and apologies in advance for flooding you page with my maps!

I've made an attempt below and got the following problems :))) How can I:

- chose the color of the pins and size ? (there is no line in the code that allows that or that mentions the svg file of the button)

- avoid the problems that seem to appear with some locations which are correct (coordinates-wise) but wrong on the general map (everything is a bit lower). like cape town. see here: https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/User:APG1984

- Also, on some other maps, pins apear correctly placed but outside of map

Thanks a million. no rush, I imagine you got much more to do:) --APG1984 (talk) 17:42, 24 November 2018 (UTC)

@APG1984: with the world map thing, it looks like an issue in the underlying template, so nothing to do with your code. That's a good spot. Regarding color of pins, you can change the image like so:
| mark = St-Anne's College Oxford Coat Of Arms.svg
Generates , and you can change the size with |marksize=, like at University of Oxford Map. Bellezzasolo Discuss 14:22, 25 November 2018 (UTC)
@APG1984: I sorted out the issue with the map. It turns out, that was happening becuase of spaces between the locations. Newlines are fine, spaces aren't. Frankly, that sort of sensitivity is ridiculous! Bellezzasolo Discuss 14:54, 25 November 2018 (UTC)

Reverted edit in the article about Copenhagen metropolitan area

Hi Bellezzasolo!

I think you reverted my edit (i.e erasing a section in the article) by mistake. The article was about several definitions of the metropolitan area of Copenhagen. The definition presented in the section I was about to erase was a complete speculation by a wikipedian. The population and areal figures were indeed correctly sourced (as you pointed out). However, the areal division/definition (i.e which municipalities to be included in the definition) has never been mentioned elsewhere and were arbitrarily chosen by the wikipedian (since it lacked any source what so ever).

Regards --NiccoUrban (talk) 00:40, 1 December 2018 (UTC)

Hi again!
I erased the section giving a more comprehensive explanation. Since I am quite new att wikipedia I would like to know if I did this correctly. Or should I have left the wrong section in order to discuss it?
Regards --NiccoUrban (talk) 08:12, 1 December 2018 (UTC)
@NiccoUrban: My mistake, closer inspection quite clearly shows that only statistics are cited. The relavant policy to mention is SYNTH, sometimes looking at just a diff and edit summary can lead to wrong conclusions! Bellezzasolo Discuss 09:02, 1 December 2018 (UTC)

 • A request for comment is in progress to determine whether members of the Bot Approvals Group should satisfy activity requirements in order to remain in that role.
 • A request for comment is in progress regarding whether to change the administrator inactivity policy, such that administrators "who have made no logged administrative actions for at least 12 months may be desysopped". Currently, the policy states that administrators "who have made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least 12 months may be desysopped".

Miscellaneous

 • In late November, an attacker compromised multiple accounts, including at least four administrator accounts, and used them to vandalize Wikipedia. If you have ever used your current password on any other website, you should change it immediately. Sharing the same password across multiple websites makes your account vulnerable, especially if your password was used on a website that suffered a data breach. As these incidents have shown, these concerns are not pure fantasies.
 • Wikipedia policy requires administrators to have strong passwords. To further reinforce security, administrators should also consider enabling two-factor authentication. A committed identity can be used to verify that you are the true account owner in the event that your account is compromised and/or you are unable to log in.

Hello Bellezzasolo, thank you for your work reviewing New Pages!

Backlog

As of 21 October 2018, there are 3650 unreviewed articles and the backlog now stretches back 51 days.

Community Wishlist Proposal
Project updates
 • ORES predictions are now built-in to the feed. These automatically predict the class of an article as well as whether it may be spam, vandalism, or an attack page, and can be filtered by these criteria now allowing reviewers to better target articles that they prefer to review.
 • There are now tools being tested to automatically detect copyright violations in the feed. This detector may not be accurate all the time, though, so it shouldn't be relied on 100% and will only start working on new revisions to pages, not older pages in the backlog.

Believer's Eastern Church

Hello Bellezzasolo - I'm not sure why you said I didn't quote a reliable source when I edited the Believer's Eastern Church page[1]. The source I cited (and I cite a source) is the church's own website[2]. Can you please explain to me how that is not a reliable source? Thank you!--Elfgirl13 (talk) 23:13, 4 December 2018 (UTC)

@Elfgirl13: I believe that I was looking at this change. A lot of vandalism can look like that, which is why I reverted, although further research shows several sources supporting this. Also worth consideration is WP:BLP, which means that ideally sources would be independent (the church website most certainly is not an independent source), but it seems to indeed be the case.
