Aspirina 19:01, 16 August 2011 (EET)

Some tips to help you out!

[edit]

Hi Becksperson, I thought I'd drop a few notes on your talk page with some help on writing articles :o)

First of all, it may be best for you to do a bit of reading, starting with the Wikipedia manual of style, which will give you a lot of information about how Wikipedia prefers its articles to be written. It's not as hard to follow as it might look; quite a bit of the information there probably won't be vital for you at first.

Second, I recommend you make a user sandbox - which is just an area you can use to practise in, and to make notes in, and to get things ready in. If you click this red link: user:Becksperson/Sandbox, that will let you create that page (it gives you an edit window to start work in). Anything, anywhere, on the help and information pages which gives you an example, try it out in your sandbox until you're familiar with it.

For your article, the next thing you want to do is start collecting as much information as you can about it. Google searches (particularly in Books and Scholar) will be your best friend for this! Once you've found the information, the next most important thing is to start writing up each fact in your own words (very important, this), and make a note at the same time of exactly where that information came from. Build in the references as you go along; I'm going to copy in, down below this, a whole heap of help on doing references, which was produced by one of our best teachers (Chzz).

Here's another place that you'll find incredibly useful - citation templates which you can copy and paste into your sandbox, between <ref></ref> tags; you just fill in the blanks from your sources into the template, and you'll end up with nicely formatted inline citations :o) It all helps. Remember to add a references section to your sandbox (make a new line, and put ==References== on it, and type {{reflist}} on the next line, so that you can see how your citations look as you do them. Remember to save your page often! You don't want to lose your work.

Hopefully this will give you a good start and make life easier for you.

One last thing to keep as a motto: "It's better to write one good, well-referenced, nicely-presented article than it is to create fifty unreferenced one-line stubs!" Pesky (talkstalk!) 07:52, 20 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

How references work

[edit]

Simple references

[edit]

These require two parts;

a)
Chzz is 98 years old.<ref> "The book of Chzz", Aardvark Books, 2009. </ref>

He likes tea. <ref> [http://www.nicecupofteaandasitdown.com Tea website] </ref>
b) A section called "References" with the special code "{{reflist}}";
== References ==
{{reflist}}

(an existing article is likely to already have one of these sections)

To see the result of that, please look at user:chzz/demo/simpleref. Edit it, and check the code; perhaps make a test page of your own, such as user:Becksperson/reftest and try it out.

Named references

[edit]
Chzz was born in 1837. <ref name=MyBook>
"The book of Chzz", Aardvark Books, 2009.
</ref>

Chzz lives in Footown.<ref name=MyBook/>

Note that the second usage has a / (and no closing ref tag). This needs a reference section as above; please see user:chzz/demo/namedref to see the result.

Citation templates

[edit]

You can put anything you like between <ref> and </ref>, but using citation templates makes for a neat, consistent look;

Chzz has 37 Olympic medals. <ref> {{Citation
 | last = Smith
 | first = John
 | title = Olympic medal winners of the 20th century
 | publication-date = 2001
 | publisher = [[Cambridge University Press]]
 | page = 125
 | isbn = 0-521-37169-4
}}
</ref>

Please see user:chzz/demo/citeref to see the result.

For more help and tips on that subject, see user:chzz/help/refs.

Something to make your life easier!

[edit]

Hi there Becksperson! I've just come across one of your articles, and noticed that you had to create titles for your url links manually, or were using bare urls as references.

You might want to consider using this tool - it makes your life a whole heap easier, by filling in complete citation templates for your links. All you do is install the script on Special:MyPage/common.js, or or Special:MyPage/vector.js, then paste the bare url (without [...] brackets) between your <ref></ref> tabs, and you'll find a clickable link called Reflinks in your toolbox section of the page (probably in the left hand column). Then click that tool. It does all the rest of the work (provided that you remember to save the page! It doesn't work for everything (particularly often not for pdf documents), but for pretty much anything ending in "htm" or "html" (and with a title) it will do really, really well. Happy editing! You are marking all your edits as "minor" when that isn't case, and you have continued, despite being informed of the problem.

Bulgarian help needed

[edit]

Hello Becksperson, I'm contacting you because we need some Bulgarian translators to help with the deployment of the new VisualEditor on bg.wikipedia. There are help pages, user guides, and description pages that need translating, as well as the interface itself. The translating work is going on over on MediaWiki: Translation Central. I also need help with a personal message for the Bulgarian Wikipedians. If you are able to help in any way, either reply here, or head over to TranslationCentral. Thanks for your time, PEarley (WMF) (talk) 20:31, 21 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Information icon Thanks for contributing the new article 2013–14 Bulgarian Cup. However, one of Wikipedia's core policies is that material must be verifiable, by being clearly attributed to reliable sources. Please help by adding more sources to the article you created, and/or by clarifying how the sources already given support the material (see here for how to do inline referencing). Many thanks! PS If you need any help, you can look at Help:Contents/Editing Wikipedia or ask at Wikipedia:New contributors' help page, or just ask me. GiantSnowman 11:47, 21 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Ways to improve 2015–16 Bulgarian Cup

[edit]

Hi, I'm Soccer-holic. Becksperson, thanks for creating 2015–16 Bulgarian Cup!

I've just tagged the page, using our page curation tools, as having some issues to fix. Fine article so far, however it would need sources for anything involving dates. So, it would be cool if you could add the official calendar, if available, or alternatively separate sources for the dates of the rounds and the drawing dates. Cheers!

The tags can be removed by you or another editor once the issues they mention are addressed. If you have questions, you can leave a comment on my talk page. Or, for more editing help, talk to the volunteers at the Teahouse. – Soccer-holicI hear voices in my head... 14:53, 9 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, yes, I can help to fill in the information about the season, although what I have found does not present the complete picture. For example, many seasons are presented only from the Last 16 round, although there are also earlier rounds for which we don't have information.Becksperson (talk) 09:34, 24 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Scottish council results

[edit]

Hey Becksperson, thanks for filling in the Scotland table at Political make-up of local councils in the United Kingdom‎! This is just a heads up that I'll be shifting your "majority" entries to the "coalition" column - the standard is to use the former to show outright majorities. All the best! :) sam (talk) 01:48, 9 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Sam, glad to help and apologies for the mix-up. I thought that the majority column contains the party who has the most cllrs, because the coalition column could indicate who governs the authority. Perhaps this could be more appropriate for Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland, as they use STV for electing their councils, which rarely leads in an outright majority for a party.--Becksperson (talk) 06:58, 9 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Those are good points actually. You're right I think - the coalition column is meant to show the governing party/coalition (come to think of it, maybe that should be called "control"). An interesting case is North Lanarkshire where SNP has the most seats but Labour might coal... esce? coalate? :P with the Tories. If that did happen a yellow column (largest) and a red column (control) might be more informative/interesting than NOC (majority) and red (control). As for NI, parties don't even seem to form coalitions, so those columns are currently pretty boring.
The page is currently just following http://opencouncildata.co.uk whose editor also edits the page. Maybe we could get a discussion going on the talk page about which format would be more useful. sam (talk) 10:03, 9 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Duplicate 2017-18 North-East Third League (Bulgaria) tables

[edit]

Hi, I just noticed that we have created templates for the league tables almost simultaneously; mine is Template:2017–18 North-East Third League (Bulgaria) table (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs). As far as I understand, this season is not split into regular season and championship/relegation rounds like 2016–17, so it appears that my table is the correct one. If you agree, could you please modify/rename your template accordingly? Perhaps it would be easier if you delete yours; no move involved. Thanks! Yavorescu (talk) 14:43, 2 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

You didn't provide a source for your changes to the Tomáš Černý article, and I couldn't find one either. If you have a reliable source please let me know and we can change the article. Please let me know if you have any questions. GiantSnowman 11:00, 27 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

CSKA's seasons

[edit]

Da li možeš da napraviš članke sa sezonama CSKA do 2003/04 sa statistikama i rezultatima?

If you don't understand Serbian:

Can you make CSKA's season articles up to 2003/04 with statistics and results? Jolicnikola (talk) 10:54, 12 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Nikola, thank you for your message! I don't think I can do it over the summer, because I'm fairly busy. There is an unofficial website (https://www.fccska.com/сезони), which includes most of the information needed for this, so if anyone wants to start doing it, it would be great.
